Welcome back to part two of the December 91 Playing with Power episode and it seems this is an issue featuring many returns. Last time we talked about the Return of the Joker, this time we're talking about Return of Samus, aka Metroid II for Game Boy which features some really gross art (which we mean as a compliment.) Later we talk about Adventure Island for Game Boy which also has some gross art (which we DON'T mean as a compliment). There's also a Ninja Gaiden game for Game Boy. And if that wasn't enough Game Boy for you, we also get to see some reader created custom Game Boy designs. Some of these are REALLY cool and make us wish they had been real. There's also a few SNES previews for Pilotwings and Populous. There's lots to talk about, including that gal from Blossom, squishy monsters, SNES arcade software. We hope you enjoy!
Transcrição do Episódio Música: Surface Of SR388, Ancient Chozo Ruins e Metroid Nest por Ryoji Yoshitomi. Space Log #223: We've landed on Planet Zebes but we have lost our power suits, and therefore have lost the shell that protects our small and fragile human bodies. Worry not, though, as the hard shell on our hearts still remains. Well, mine does, I can't actually speak for Matt. Sadly this particular hard shell is only metaphorical, as the heart is also squishy and made of pierceable flesh. I admit that maybe buying the cheapest pistols at Space Costco for our emergency kit was not the smartest idea, but I will never say out loud that Matt was right when he yelled at me for buying them. The guy at the store said these were the ones we wanted! We're fine. It's fine. Anyways, that's not what this log is actually about, we're actually going to talk about Smashterpiece #46: Metroid: Zero Mission. How does it compare to the original? What about to other remakes in the series, such as the remakes of Metroid II? How is the new section at the end? THE GUNS ARE FINE, STOP WHINING OR I WON'T GIVE YOU ANY MORE DISCOUNT SPACE RATIONS. THEY WERE ON SALE.Join us next time as we flatten and fold into the world of Smashterpiece #47: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

They got HUGE! Then Craig left. What the hell happened? I'm very stoked to have the one and only Stuttering Craig on the show this week. We talked about the formation and rise of ScrewAttack, why he left, where he went, and why he's decided to come back to the world of gaming content creation with his show, the Side Scrollers Podcast. I know some of you have been asking for more interview episodes, and I think we nailed it this week. I hope you enjoy listening to Craig as much as I enjoyed talking to the guy. And before we start Stuttering, I HAVE to stumble through another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I still play any games just for fun, and not for the podcast. But I never had a chance to combine them until last year, when the Cowabunga Collection dropped and I finally had access to the trilogy of Game Boy TMNT games. Admittedly, the first 2 are 'meh', but TMNT III: Radical Rescue? That's a special little game, and a true hidden gem on the GB. You start out playing as Michelangelo, and you have to proceed through a map, finding and rescuing Leo, Donnie, and Raph. Each of the turtles has a unique ability, and it makes the game into a metroidvania. As you find new turtles, their new abilities let you access new areas of the map. It's a little basic and small scale, but it doesn't mean it isn't a really rad idea. It's also tough as fuuuuck. My resident Game Boy guru, Patrick, gave me a call this week, and we talked about what is not only the best TMNT game on Nintendo's first handheld system, but one of the best TMNT games ever made. It's all about Radical Rescue this week! And before we get radical, I slap together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! We're kicking it old school this week, as we're diving into one of the most important and underrated games in the series - Metroid II! We're once again joined by Staff Writer Daniel Hoctor to go over our first memories of playing it, how its limitations might or might not dissuade newer players, the importance of the games story and gameplay on the rest of the series, why none of the music has come back, our thoughts on the evolution of the Metroids, what this original version offers that neither Samus Returns or AM2R does, and so much more! If you haven't played Metroid II in a long time, or maybe ever, you owe it to yourself to fire it up on NSO and give it a whirl! It's a new week, Metroid fans, and this episode we're comparing and contrasting the "Golden Age" of Metroid from 2002-2007 to the current era we're in now, starting in 2021 with Metroid Dread. Andy is joined by Staff Writer Daniel Hoctor to talk about when the tide started to swing back up for the series, how Metroid Prime 4 plays into this era, what other games could be on the horizon, when the first "Golden Age" officially ended, and more! PLUS, we spend some talking Ridley! More specifically, we analyze two articles on improving the Meta Ridley fight and why the Proteus Ridley fight fits thematically in Metroid II! Definitive Ranking is back for a brand new installment focused on Samus's first new (at the time) 2D Metroid game in over a decade, the apply named Metroid: Samus Returns! We're breaking it down, discussing the categories and topics such as: did the gameplay innovations made in Samus Returns land, or were they a little undercooked? Although the music was decent, you barely hear the best tracks, so can we rate music highly? Does the focus on combat take away from the atmosphere intended by the original Metroid II game? What's up with that brown/yellow filter the whole game has? All this and so much more discussed as we break down Samus's 3DS adventure in one of our longest shows yet. Come play along, and as always, here's the criteria for the Definitive Rankings: World / Atmosphere (the vibe, the setting, the mood) Art Style (design of Samus, the enemies, the graphics in general) Story (what works, what doesn't) Pacing / Progression (are there any parts that really bog the player down, or is it still fun getting lost?) Gameplay / “Gimmick” (what new or different gameplay aspects we like) Items / Abilities (how are the powerups and are they cool and practical) Areas (how does each individual area look, feel, play, etc.) Enemies / Bosses (are they fun, creative, etc.) Expansions / Powerups (are the expansions hidden throughout the world fun, creative, and enjoyable to collect?) Music (are we humming along?) Of course, all of these are subjective, and we're putting our critics hats on, but we want to hear what you have to say on Twitter! Visit OmegaMetroid.com! Subscribe! You have been stripped of most abilities. You might call it podcast amnesia. Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we're going to be talking about Metroid Dread, the 5th mainline 2D Metroid game, which is admittedly a lot of qualifiers. Dread picks up following the events of Fusion, a game that was nearly 19 years old at Dread's release, and carries over its story elements as well as some of the design that made Fusion feel different from the games that preceded it. For example, Dread feels like a more linear experience than previous Metroid games, with less of an emphasis on exploration, but it does so much more with its design, guiding players with a much more invisible hand than Fusion was able to do, and making navigation feel much less daunting than in classic Metroidvanias. Instead, Dread shifts its difficulty more into combat, which is more fluid than its ever been, leaning partially on the newer hardware it's been released on, but also because you are given a host of new abilities both for movement and combat, chief amongst them being the counter, a mechanic developed in the remake of Metroid II on the 3DS, and put to use again here to great effect. This counter mechanic, as well as the speed and fluidity of the combat, shifts the focus of gameplay from careful exploration and resource management into a more run and gun experience, with the exploration being relegated to uncovering upgrades and hidden paths. While some may lament the loss of a more traditional Metroid experience, it does still provide a mix that keeps the feeling of exploring an unknown planet while smoothing out the frustrating experiences and focusing more on player execution. We're going to be talking about abstraction in level design and how this can better immerse the player in the game, combat difficulty and boss fights, and we discuss how Samus has over time become a cocktail of genetics. Thank you for joining us again this week! Metroid, being one of the genre naming franchises of “Metroidvania” style games, has largely existed on its classic catalogue, with many years between releases and spinoff games and remakes holding down its presence in the gaming landscape, so to get a new game with comparatively little time between announcement and release was a pretty exciting thing for fans, most notably, me. How do you think Dread handled the franchise's tropes and design sensibilities? Was it what you were looking for, or do you still pine for another game like Super Metroid? Let us know down in the comments or over on our Discord server where we talk about the games. Next time, we'll be playing… something. We're opening up the suggestions to the listeners for next month, so check back in to find out what we were recommended, or drop a suggestion of your own in the comment section!

The first season of Game Informer's Video Gameography explores the history of the Metroid series. After running down Samus' classic debut, we're moving on to its polarizing handheld sequel, Metroid II: Return of Samus. Developed by Nintendo R&D1, Metroid II is largely viewed as the red-headed stepchild of the series. Samus' encore outing launched on the Game Boy in 1991, which means it was limited in terms of presentation and scale. The monochrome graphics and zoomed-in perspective made exploration trickier than its predecessor, and the primary mission tasked players with locating and eradicating over 40 Metroids scattered across the map, a mission structure that hasn't been implemented since. Join hosts Ben Reeves (@BenjaminReeves), Marcus Stewart (@MarcusStewart7), and special guest, comic book writer/podcast host Chris Sims (@theisb), as we explore Metroid II's lore, development history, and lasting impact, such as the fact that it's received two modern remakes, both officially and otherwise. If you'd like to get in touch with the Video Gameography podcast, you can email us at podcast@gameinformer.com. You can also join our official Game Informer Discord server by linking your Discord account to your Twitch account and subscribing to the Game Informer Twitch channel. Samus is back! At least she was in 1991 when Metroid II: The Return of Samus hit the Game Boy, and then again in 1998 when Ashley played it (and yes we know she's back again in Metroid Dread). This sequel to the hit NES is peculiar in a number of ways (that you'll have to listen to the episode to find out about, natch!) but we're certain it is worth anyone's time if they have even the slightest whiff of interest in games, so give us a listen to find out why! Link to Article: https://bit.ly/3tvbtepBack in April a group of incredibly talented independent developers calling themselves Team SCU released an impressive demo for Prime 2D, a side-scrolling remake of 2002's first-person Metroid Prime. The ambitious project had been in planning for over 15 years. Nintendo's lawyers put an end to it in four months.Nintendo is known for fiercely protecting its properties from fans who want to transform their passion for games like Metroid Prime into something beautiful and unique for the whole community to enjoy for free, so the shutting down of Prime 2D comes as no surprise. The clock started ticking as soon as Team SCU released the demo in early April. Despite the project using completely original assets and music, it was undoubtedly a Metroid fan game, and Nintendo lawyers hate those. Remember the fan remake of Metroid II that Nintendo shut down a day after it went live?Imaging Working on a Project For 10+ Years and Nintendo Scraps It. We kick off our Metroid Saga Game Club with a long discussion about Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission. We dip into our personal history with the NES original and the GBA remake, as well as our modern experiences, Samus' story, and the series speedrunning legacy. The crew is vast and maybe each one represents an area of Zebes. We'll leave that determination to the viewer (is Matt a real Norfair son of a gun?), but all manner of Connectivity legacy is represented alongside John and Neal. We've got original co-host Andy Goergen with his NES adoration, Blue Coin Cast co-host Xander Morningstar with his fresh-faced feelings, and Smashterpieces co-host and recurring guest Matt Zawodniak and his increasingly short Zero Mission replays. Enjoy and be sure to join the Metroid Saga Game Club discussion in our Discord. Available on the Castlevania collection on Switch Question of the week 16bitnomad — Got a good question for everyone…what's your biggest pet peeve about buying retro games?? (Other than the price!!!) Mine has to be the placement of pricing stickers. They can be placed on the cartridge artwork, over another sticker on a case, not even be a sticker but a marker, and it just drives me up the wall. I will pick up some retro stuff and when I get home the first thing I do is break out a razer blade and the alcohol and go to cleaning. twodollarhero — if I can't trust a store to authenticate their product, don't gripe at ME for wanting to authenticate it before I buy. I've straight up brought a triwing with me into a shop before to ask if I could authenticate a cart before buying. If you're confident that you're selling authentic games, what's the problem? SpiderShan — It's not a huge thing in the grand scheme of things but my pet peeve is buying a game or system online and receiving it really dusty/dirty. Like, can't you at least drag a cloth across it to remove a little dust?!?Eric Plunk — Outdated prices on games that they look prices up on once they're brought up to the register. Nothing will make me walk out faster.InfiniteBlue — I used to spend summer Saturdays biking to garage sales around my city to look for games, but in the last 4-5 years it's gotten insane with resellers, craigslist hawks, and ravenous collectors buying up anything worthwhile literally as soon as they open. Milton Guasti had spent 10 years of his life recreating Metroid II, until Nintendo claimed copyright infringement, merely a day after its release. There was always a chance that the lawyers would come knocking, but what Milton didn’t expect was for his hobby project to become the game that an entire community was counting on. In this episode of Casual Chats, Patricia interviews the man behind the fan remake of 1991 Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus titled Another Metroid 2 Remake, Milton "DoctorM64" Gausti. They discuss about his earliest video game memories, what made him decide to do a fan remake on Metroid II, and the 10 year process on creating one of the most well regarded fan games in recent memory.
When it comes to Nintendo franchises, Metroid sticks out like a sore thumb. It's completely unlike almost any other Nintendo fare. It simply doesn't fit. But that's what makes it so interesting. It all started humbly enough in the 1986 original, but underneath the unassuming facade of a side-scrolling action game was a shockingly deep (and ruthlessly difficult) adventure, one that required its earliest players to make maps by hand, distinguish between items and weapons with unclear uses, and keep their wits in a sprawling map far harder to decipher and navigate than its cousin, The Legend of Zelda. There were even multiple endings! By the early-'90s, Metroid returned with a Game Boy-exclusive sequel created with the same explorative mantra in mind, and, well, the rest is history. Or herstory, perhaps, since Metroid also introduced gamers to one of the medium's first iconic female protagonists. But enough delay: Let's chat about Metroidvanias long before that term even existed. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tchiousss ! Bruno
We are joined live by Dr. Kate Raynes-Goldie, Director of Games & Interactive at FTI and winner of the WAITTA Incite “Achiever of the Year” award for her passionate advocacy for the Western Australian games industry, Kate filled us in on her hopes for the future of WA game development, her thoughts on the power of the indie game scene and how our favourite small creators may well hold the key to the future success of Australian made games. You can visit one of Kate’s projects, Playup Perth, a collaborative game testing night, at the The Nostalgia Box to sample some of WA’s finest indie games. You can visit http://playupperth.org/next-playup-event/ for tickets and details. Last week Mitch had endless trouble trying to run No Man’s Sky on the office PS4 with no web connection, so this week we’re looking at the internet connection conundrum. With more and more games requiring the internet to even launch, total offline gaming could be a thing of the past. What happens if you’re in an area where internet is spotty, and you can’t experience the cultural phenomenon that is Pokémon Go? Can you make games if you aren’t able to study and learn from the works of others? Finally we look at pastiche & homage games. With recent high profile fan made games AM2R, a remake of Metroid II, and Pokémon Uranium, a brand new adventure set in the Pokémon world being released then pulled, we examine what it means when developers copy or imitate the work of others. Is this a vital part of remix culture, or just a plain copyright infringement? You can find us on all the social media sites, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, YouTube and Steam. Just search for "pixelsift" and you'll find us!
The South Figaro Podcast is back, and ready to talk about outdated videogame topics! Is it discrimination if students ask for only non-white roommates, or should it be allowed? Or maybe it's discrimination and it should still be allowed. A student from Claremont Colleges in California recently did just that, looking to create a "safe space" inside her home: I debate the merits of this claim with this week's guest, director of marketing from Full Moon Entertainment, and alternate-lifestyle evangelist, Wry. Full Moon Entertainment, if you'll recall, is the company behind my masterpiece film debut, Ooga Booga. Also, here is a quick survey to help out the show: http://survey.libsyn.com/madcastmedia I received a metric shit-ton of voicemail at the top of the show, thanks in no small part to Rucka's various shenanigans about minutes that are allegedly Armenian.
