Epidemiläkaren Carl Gunnar Engström i Stockholm uppfann ett mekaniskt andningshjälpmedel, den första volymstyrda respiratorn. Engströmrespiratorn såldes över hela världen, men den var inte alls anpassad för att följa patientens egen andning. Att det var problematiskt insåg den unge uppfinnaren och läkarstudenten Björn Jonson. Han gav sig genast i kast med att bygga en flödesregulator, det som blev förlagan till dagens moderna och avancerade respiratorer och en grundbult i den moderna intensivvården världen över. Torkan i somras ledde till att många bönder försökte ta fram alternativa foderväxter för kor och hästar. SLU-forskare arbetar nu med att ta reda på hur bra grödorna fungerar som mat till djuren. Mellangrödor som till exempel åkerböna, oljerättika eller stubbrova sås efter att spannmålet skördats för att sedan brukas ner innan det är dags för nästa spannmål. De odlas främst för att förbättra markens bördighet. Men under den svåra sommartorkan skördade bönder sina mellangrödor för att använda dem som foder.
