Time just flies! It feels like yesterday we wrapped 2023, and we are already at that time of the year again, with a 2024 warp-up! 2024 was a bit different than previous years, as we had only one themed series, and the rest of the episodes were a one-off, covering a variety of topics. And, early in the year, we also celebrated the 100th episode, in a live 2-hours show, that introduced many of the guest from the previous 3 years of podcasting. In our themed series we covered Session Replay products. This seris was very informtive and can prove to be a valuable tool for product managers. We continued this year covering great books for product people, and several frameworks and mindsets. Some of our guests shared with us methods to craft our products' story, naming our products, and what goes into making decisions. Product Coaching grew steadily this year and was the topic of several episodes. We learned what it takes to be a product professional to build IoT products, and we caught up on the state of Product Analytics products. And of course, we couldn't ignore AI and GenAI and how they help us - or the potential they can have in helping us. Finally, we introduce a startup product that help product people in a unique way.We would like to thank each and every guest that came on the show! Kory shares insights on foundational behaviors, clarifying expectations, stakeholder management, and risk management. The conversation also delves into the significance of accountability and performance discussions, particularly for those leading without formal authority. If you lead projects, regardless of your title, this discussion is for you! Sound Bites "We often find that at least 80% of the participants in our project management workshops don't have the word project in their title. Yet you could argue that, in many ways, we're all project managers." "The top reasons why projects fail are unclear scope, key stakeholders wanting different things, lack of communication, not knowing the roles, having the wrong people in roles, and scope creep." "Accountability takes on a different lens. It's not punitive. It's mutual accountability." "A cadence of accountability sets up a team that is inspired to want to do the work." This week, your host, Dan Neumann, is accompanied by Gill Broza. Gil is known for simplifying the complex and making the implicit explicit so people can make better choices. He is a writer and never prescribes a single right way. In this episode, Dan and Gil explore how to help teams grow and produce improved outcomes while diving deep into a discussion regarding Gil's latest book, Deliver Better Results. Key Takeaways Agile introduced the concept that multiple ways exist to create, ideate, and deliver products. The variety of Agile methods can be paralyzing Gil proposes five levels of adoption to find the best “fit for purpose” The primary purpose is to help the company succeed while doing it timely and showing adaptability. Six aspects of fitness for purpose in the delivery process are throughput, outcomes, timeliness, adaptation, consistency, and cost efficiency. The value lies in how well we serve the company and the effect of the work. The people matter the most; they are the ones transiting the process. The strategies proposed by Gil work because people start to behave differently. Ways of working result from combining the tactics we use (process, practices, roles, artifacts, tools) and the mindset we employ while executing the tactics. The mindset is defined by choice-making, which has three components: purpose, beliefs, and principles. Sometimes, you need to change tactics and mindset simultaneously. It requires hard work but could be the only way to work. Decisions made in one place of the system can have ramifications everywhere else. Gil prefers to use the term “way of working” instead of “process” since it is a bigger construct and includes the choice-making component. The words we use matter; they communicate the way that we work and how we approach tasks. A few weeks ago I interviewed Gil Broza about his new book, “Deliver Better Results: How to Unlock Your Organization's Potential". The book was designed to quickly provide actionable practices that organizations can utilize to improve their value delivery system. It focuses on understanding the fitness for purpose of your system of delivery, and how to employ his ten strategies to improve your level of maturity. During my prep for the interview and during our conversation, there was one thing that was stuck in my head. None of this works without trust. How can a traditional, potentially toxic organization pivot into an approach that is mostly dependent on a certain level of trust? So, during our first interview, I asked Gil if he'd be open to a second conversation where we focus on the question “How do you build trust in an organizational system that does not have it? Gil was kind enough to agree and that is where this podcast began. Summary In this episode, Andy Kaufman interviews Gil Broza about his new book, Deliver Better Results: How to Unlock Your Organization's Potential. They discuss the importance of systems thinking in value delivery and the six aspects of system fitness. Gil shares practical strategies for improving value delivery and emphasizes the significance of mindset over tactics. He also provides examples of successful transformations and offers resources available on the book's website. Takeaways Value delivery should be viewed as a system, not a collection of practices. Systems thinking helps identify the cause and effect relationships within a value delivery system. Understanding the effects of choices and actions is crucial for making informed decisions. The Square model provides a framework for assessing system fitness and improving value delivery. Successful transformations require a sequential and incremental approach, focusing on mindset and values. Resources on the book's website offer additional support for implementing the strategies discussed. In today's episode we had the privilege to meet with Gil Broza, Founder and Value Delivery & Agile Leadership Expert at 3P Vantage, author, trainer, coach, facilitator and speaker, as he released his latest book (number 4!), Deliver Better Results: How to Unlock Your Organization's Potential.Bringing his vast experience from decades helping software companies and enterprises with IT departments go through organizational transformation, Gil developed a unique point of view and method to assess a company's fitness, and move incrementally to their best possible fitness as an organization producing real results with their digital product development.Gil's method's core strength, and the way it is presented in the book, is for companies that are building complex technical products, so it fits nicely with what we do as Product Managers in the digital world.Utilizing system thinking for everyone involved in creating the product, Gil identifies 6 fitness aspects to measure our team/system. Then, with the team, we score the overall level of fitness (based on a very simple scoring system for each fitness aspect). Once we have our score (and we have to be honest about where we are!), we fit into a level on a scale of 5 levels. The move up the ladder from each level to the next is sequential, applying strategies that Gil explains in detail in the book.Join us as we discuss Gil's process on the show. In the episode you will also learn: What is “a system”?How do we define the system of delivering a technical product? The importance of assessing the fitnessThe 6 fitness aspectsSome strategies to move between fitness levelsHow each strategy fits in the level the company is atWhat happens if we don't apply the strategies in the right order? Is assessing our company's fitness and applying the strategies fitting a specific development process (scrum, kanban, waterfall etc) or is it agnostic? And much more…And as a bonus for our listeners, you can download the first chapter right here: heardonpodcast.deliverbetterresultsbook.comYou can connect with Gil at:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gilbroza/New book “Deliver Better Results: How to Unlock Your Organization's Potential”: https://DeliverBetterResultsBook.com3P Vantage: https://3pvantage.com/You can find the podcast's page, and connect with Matt and Moshe on Linkedin:Product for Product Podcast - https://www.linkedin.com/company/product-for-product-podcastMatt Green - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mattgreenanalytics/Moshe Mikanovsky - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikanovsky/Note: any views mentioned in the podcast are the sole views of our hosts and guests, and do not represent the products mentioned in any way. Please leave us a review and feedback ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gil Broza has been a guest on this podcast a number of times in the past. He's the author of several books that focus on Agile, including The Human Side of Agile and Agile for Non-Software Teams. Gil is a teacher, lecturer, and the founder of 3PVantage. He also helps organizations transform to Agile, and he's developed a new tool called Square that can be used to assess your value delivery so that you can make an intentional, well-informed choice about which improvements are the right ones to pursue. In this team, we could see the team members cared for the product they were working on. However, they cared so much, they started to allow themselves to “dive into the code and refactor” at will. Eventually, that care for the product was translated into an anti-pattern: caring more about the code, than the people using the product. Does your team care more about the product than the users? In this episode, we share some tips on how to handle that Agile anti-pattern of caring more for the product than the users. Featured Book of the Week: The human side of Agile by Gil Broza In The human side of Agile by Gil Broza, David found insights on how to focus on the people in the team, and the organization that is adopting Agile. The book helped David understand that, even if it is tempting to focus on the tools and processes, the core of Agile adoption is focusing on people. In the same vein, the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast published a book that is exactly about how to focus on people in your Agile adoption. Our guest in this episode is Gil Broza, Gil is founder and principal at 3P Vantage. Close to 100 organizations seeking Agile transformations, makeovers, or improvements have relied on his pragmatic, modern, and respectful support for customizing Agile in their contexts. We chatted with Gil about reasons why companies fail at "going Agile." It is estimated that 70% of transformations fail at some point. The most likely reasons, and the ones we explore, are lack of understanding of Agile values/principles, an overall sense of fear in the company, and a lack of trust among everyone. Gil provides some practical ways to overcome these stumbling blocks to get you pointed in the right direction, and help you succeed with Agile. If you've ever struggled with Agile at your company, you'll want to use these tips to make your journey more smooth. This month I was lucky enough to talk with Gil Broza about the importance of an Agile Mindset. Gil is the author of "The Agile Mindset", "The Human Side of Agile", and "Agile for Non Software Teams". Joe Krebs speaks with Gil Broza about challenges non-software teams are facing when they are interested in increasing their agility. We talk about boards, stories, automated testing, an agile mindset, and the role of a product owner. Gil helps organizations increase their agility and team performance with minimal risk and thrashing. Close to 100 companies seeking Agile transformations, makeovers, or improvements have relied on his pragmatic, modern, and respectful support for customizing Agile in their contexts. He is the author of three acclaimed books, “The Agile Mind-Set”, “The Human Side of Agile”, and most recently “Agile for Non-Software Teams”.
In this episode we talk about the human side of Agile with Gil Broza. Gil is an Agile minset & leadership coach and has authored three books that revolve around the theme of Agile mindset. We talk about what mindset people need to become more Agile, how to deal with resistance and how to keep transformations human.
Gil Broza is the author of three acclaimed books including his latest “Agile for Non-Software Teams.” It was written to be practical and applicable for the roles “we always forget in transformation,” like marketing and HR. Each chapter is a step along a personal agile journey and ends with “Here’s what needs to be true until you move on.” Further, rather than prescribing an off-the-shelf agile framework, Broza wants to provide guidance so teams can design their own process, measure progress, and inspect and adapt – an agile approach to an agile journey. Gil Broza is back with a brand new book that answers a question that is asked in every single class I teach. Can you use Agile outside of software? The simple answer is yes. Agile practices are applied in a wide range of fields that are not IT related. Mindset is the gray matter between why we do our work and how we get it done. Gil Broza, a much sought-after speaker, Agile coach, and author of The Human Side of Agile and The Agile Mind-Set, sat down with us for a deep dive into the Agile mindset. According to Broza, the Agile mindset is made up for 3 things:• Values: What we care about.• Beliefs: What we assume or hold to be true.• Principles: The standards that guide how we act. He goes on to explain why Agile transformations fail when we focus on behaviors without changing our mindset. Accenture | SolutionsIQ's Howard Sublett hosts. Software Process and Measurement Cast 351 includes three columns. The first is our essay on distributed Agile. What is distributed Agile? The phrase "distributed Agile" is often used indiscriminately; therefore definitions can cover a wide range of situations and evoke a wide range of emotions. A precise definition encompasses three concepts. The first is a team, project or program that is using Agile techniques. The second is geographic distribution describing where team members are located. The location of team members in a distributed team can range from being spread across a single building to members sprinkled across continents. Finally, the third is organizational distribution, meaning that teams can be comprised of members from different companies. No matter the definition, distributed Agile is different. Check out Software Process and Measurement Cast 278. SPaMCAST 278 features our interview with Diane Zajac-Woodie discussing the role of the business analyst (BA) in Agile. Scrum is mute on the topic of the BA, does that that mean the BAs should pack their bags and look for re-training options? Single word answer, no. The BA role is an important driver of facilitation and communication. Diane clearly lays out not only what the BA should be doing in an Agile project but what is possible with a little facilitation. Diane Zajac-Woodie (also known as @agilesquirrel on Twitter – explained in the podcast) has spent the last six years redefining the business analyst role as more than a requirements dictator. Through open and honest conversations, Diane guides her business partners toward creative solutions that solve problems and eliminate waste. She shares this same approach with her technical teams, facilitating communication, cooperation, and continuous learning to ensure success. Diane craves knowledge almost as much as chocolate and would make question-asking an Olympic sport. Her recent passion is to free those mired in the status quo even if she has to pull them out one at a time. Diane’s alter ego makes her thoughts transparent on her blog, http://agilesquirrel.blogspot.com/. Diane is currently a co-chair for the Collaboration, Culture and Teams track for Agile2014. She is giving her BA talk at Agile and Beyond 2014 in February and will be speaking at the Agile Development Conference West in June. However in the SPaMCAST 279 we will show how Agile Risk Management can be used to improve the value projects deliver! The Software Process and Measurement Cast has a sponsor. Check out Software Process and Measurement Cast 277. SPaMCAST 277 features our essay on Scrumban. Scrumban is the combination of Kanban (lean) and Scrum (Agile) techniques. Each contributes different things to the hybrid framework. Kanban contributes a focus on flow, while Scrum contributes a focus on people and timeframe. Together, both focuses bring value to process improvement. The understanding of how these two sets of techniques and philosophies can be combined provides change agents with another powerful arrow in their quiver of available options. Also in SPaMCAST 277 Steve Tendon discusses the limitations of Scrum. Many people believe Scrum is a silver bullet for every situation. Steve will attempt to dissuade you of that opinion! Penny works with people in multi-national organizations who are grappling with tricky projects (i.e. risky, ambiguous, with diverse stakeholders, with virtual teams). She hosts the global BA Summit in November each year. Recently she's also been in demand as a mentor for business analysts, especially with those keen to develop their leadership skills. Penny's books include "Business Analysis and Leadership: Influencing change" (published by Kogan Page, 2013), "A Short Guide to Facilitating Risk Management" (Gower, 2011) and a chapter in "The Gower Handbook of People in Project Management" (Gower, 2013). Check out Software Process and Measurement Cast 275. The SPaMCAST 275 features our essay on leadership. Leaders and leadership are important, perhaps more important with Agile and lean techniques that no longer use command and control management techniques. Even if you believe that leaders are born, the ability to lead can be honed and developed. Managers typically draw on their hierarchal position for their organizational power and use that power to control those they manage which has been shown in the long term to be less effective and efficient. Leadership is import because leaders generate more value enabling people through providing a path towards their vision. The delivery of value is why organizations exist and why projects are done therefore leadership is not a luxury but a necessity. Kim Pries provides a column this week focusing on paradoxes. Kim’s essay is extremely thought provoking and is a must listen for change agents. Remember to register for the "Influential Agile Leader" events led by Johanna Rothman and Gil Broza. Check out Software Process and Measurement Cast 274. The SPaMCAST 274 features our interview with Jeremy Berriault. We talked about testing, test professionalism and testing in academia. Sometimes it is easy to forget that testing is one of the primary tools to manage quality in software development and that test professionals are a core part of any development department. Jeremy’s bio tells us that his main goals within the Quality Assurance discipline are to ensure that the value is achieved across the organization and that it is a valued profession to be in. He has had 20 year progressive career growth within the Quality Assurance discipline .Jeremy has a wealth of knowledge on QA processes, planning and continuous improvement. Working for large Canadian financial institutions he has a great appreciation of the risk mitigation a QA group can bring to an organization and their clients to ensure there are no financial or privacy impacts. His long career has introduced him to many leaders and knowledge experts within the QA discipline that have helped increase his own experiences. Jeremy is very approachable and is very collaborative because he believes that ownership of the processes does not sit with one individual. He enjoys working within a diverse group of individuals where everybody learns from one another and improves as a team. Jeremey can be found on LinkedIn. Welcome to the Software Process and Measurement Cast 272. The SPaMCAST 272 features my interview with Jeff Anderson. We talked about The Lean Change Method and the book of the same title! Jeff's Bio: My mission in life is to help technology knowledge workers be awesome at what they do. Having been in the market since 1994, I have harnessed my initial passion for agile software engineering to provide advisory services to clients that want to thrive in a world of market uncertainty and continuous learning. Over the last several years I have been running Deloitte LEAN, an Agile/Lean transformation service to help clients embrace the knowledge economy. Our service offering has evolved from coaching teams with agile, to end to end transformation of IT using Lean/Kanban, to now coaching businesses to embrace Lean Startup thinking. I admit to am unbridled enthusiasm for any method that bring creativity and joy to the value creation process. A big part of my job is the synthesis of leading edge thinking into contextualized, practical tools. As an example I have adapted lean startup methods to organizational change management, and self published the book "The Lean Change Method". I been nominated for a Brickell Key award, and am a founding fellow of the Lean System Society. Welcome to the Software Process and Measurement Cast 271. The SPaMCAST 271 features our essay titled Revisiting the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. As this is the first new podcast of 2014 we felt that it a good time to reflect and retool with a bit of Stephen Covey!. The essay begins: Approximately 23 years ago I was in the middle of the second of three process improvement program reboots brought on by another bank merger. During the stress of the scenario, I picked up a copy of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. I was not alone - the copy which I still have as in it 13th printing (Fireside Imprint), nor am I alone now - The 7 Habits sitting at #62 on Amazon’s Best Sellers as of September 15 2013. The popularity is not only a reflection of timelessness and usefulness of the advice, but also its approachability. I can pick the book up, and with a bit of reflection, derive value in excess of the effort. One final thought, if you don’t have a copy of the book, buy one (I would loan you mine, but I suspect I will read it again). If you use the link below it will support the Software Process and Measurement blog and podcast! Dead Tree Version Kindle Version The SPaMCAST 271 also includes Kim Pries column. Also in the Software Process Measurement Cast 269 we begin a new column called Tame the Flow featuring the ideas and advice of Steve Tendon. The essay begins: Kanban, which means signal card in Japanese, has been a staple of lean auto manufacturing for years through its application in the Toyota Production System (and in lean manufacturing environments). and ends: Focusing on one item at a time and minimizing wait states requires rethinking how we think and talk about work. Ultimately and after we adjust to the changes, Kanban improves efficiency and delivery of business value. Listen to the podcast to catch all the stuff in between. Agile Project Management Agile project management continues to gain momentum around the world, especially with regards to software development projects. Software Process and Measurement Cast 206 features my interview with Kenny Rubin. We discussed his book Essential Scrum, A Practical Guide to the Most Popular Agile Process. Help support the SPaMCAST by reviewing and rating the Software Process on ITunes! It helps people find the cast. Kenny Rubin provides Scrum and agile training and coaching to help companies develop products in an effective and economically sensible way. A Certified Scrum Trainer, Kenny has trained over 18,000 people on agile and Scrum, Smalltalk development, managing object-oriented projects, and transition management. He has coached over 200 companies, ranging from start-ups to Fortune 10. Kenny was the first Managing Director of the worldwide Scrum Alliance, a nonprofit organization focused on the successful adoption of Scrum. In addition to this book, Kenny is also the co-author of the 1995 book Succeeding with Objects: Decision Frameworks for Project Management. He received his B.S. in Information and Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology and his M.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University. Kenny’s background is rooted in the object-oriented technology community. He started as a Smalltalk developer on a NASA-funded project back in 1985 and developed the first blackboard expert system outside of LISP. In 1988 he was fortunate to join ParcPlace Systems, a start-up company formed as a Xerox PARC spin-off, whose charter was to bring object-oriented technology out of the research labs and release it to the world. As a Smalltalk development consultant with many different organizations in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, Kenny was an early adopter of agile practices. His first use of Scrum was in 2000 for developing bioinformatics software. In the course of his career, Kenny has held many roles, including successful stints as a Scrum product owner, ScrumMaster, and member of development teams. In addition, he has held numerous executive management roles: CEO, COO, VP of Engineering, VP of Product Management, and VP of Professional Services. He has also overseen the development of five commercial software product suites, generating over $200M in aggregate revenue. In addition, he has been directly involved in raising over $150M in venture capital funding and assisted in taking two companies public on the NASDAQ. His multifaceted background gives Kenny the ability to understand (and explain) Scrum and its implications equally well from multiple perspectives: from the development team to the executive board.
