In today's fast-paced and constantly changing business landscape, companies must be able to innovate quickly and adapt to new challenges. Agile methodologies are becoming increasingly popular as they offer a flexible and iterative delivery method. However, a growth mindset can be the missing link that elevates the effectiveness of Agile ways of working.A growth mindset is a belief that intelligence, skills, and abilities can be developed through hard work, dedication, and continuous learning. It contrasts with a fixed mindset that assumes that these qualities are innate and unchangeable. In an Agile environment, a growth mindset can empower individuals and teams to embrace challenges, experiment with new ideas, and learn from failures. This talk will explore the benefits of a growth mindset in an Agile ways of working. We will discuss how a growth mindset can foster innovation and creativity, promote collaboration and communication, and enhance the ability to respond to change. We will also provide practical tips and strategies for cultivating a growth mindset within teams, such as seeking feedback, embracing challenges, and celebrating progress.Joanna KoprowiczJoanna is a passionate Agile Enthusiast who has made it her mission to bring positive change to a wide range of organisations and sectors. The effects of the shift to hybrid workEnabled by new technologies and informed by the experiences during COVID pandemic, many employees would like to continue working remotely. Many companies, on the contrary, would like to see their employees back to the office. In this context, hybrid work is often proposed as a solution that meets the interests of both employees and employers and captures the benefits of both remote and in-office work. But is it indeed “the best of both worlds”?In this talk, Dr. Andreeva (Maynooth University School of Business) will discuss her ongoing research on the effects of the mass-scale shift to hybrid work. For example, what happens in a team, when some of your team members work mostly from the office, while others work mostly from home? How do work arrangements of the employees – in the office, hybrid or remote - influence their experiences at work and their performance? How do organisations manage the shift to hybrid work? The talk will explore the emerging evidence on these issues and discuss implications for individual employees and organisations. The SpeakerDr. Tatiana Andreeva is an Associate Professor in Management and Organisational Behavior and Research Director at the School of Business, Maynooth University, Ireland. Her ongoing research projects explore how the shift to remote and hybrid work influences knowledge sharing and collaboration in organisations – what challenges companies face and how to address them. Tatiana's work has been published in leading international academic journals such as Human Resource Management Journal, Human Resource Management and Journal of World Business, amongst others, as well as in the business media outlets. Prior to joining academia, Tatiana worked in management consulting and in HR.Her notes are here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1E5UACsLfviml2Zx92ohqs6d-3M9cZ-mw/view?usp=share_link Find us here: www.agileleanireland.org

If Agile is a “Copernican revolution in management,” as Ed Denning suggests, is it also a “Copernican revolution in leadership? That question spawns more questions before we can answer it meaningfully. Is management (the quality of managing) different in leadership (the quality of leading)? Are managers (people who manage) also leaders (people who lead)? Who are the managers (which people manage)? Who are the leaders (which people lead)? In this workshop, we'll address how to begin answering these questions for yourself, by introducing participants to “leadership models” and “how to build yours.” The session will be practical because we learn by doing; it will be interactive because we learn faster when interacting (doing) with others. The session will be thought-provoking because only you can develop a leadership model that's your own.The first learning objective will be focused on revealing and reflecting back to you on what your assumptions and understandings of leadership might be. Some of these assumptions may be unconscious, based on biases, or both. This section will be interactive using real-time questions to solicit data and feedback to help open our thinking about leadership. At the end of this section, participants will have tools to reflect on their leadership assumptions and some of those assumptions explored and declared. The second learning objective will be focused on how we traditionally study and teach leadership, and why those established practices make no sense in the Agile/Lean organization. This section will be a short lecture, using a statistical model to expose the limited utility of our traditional approaches to understanding and developing leadership in the organization. At the end of this session, participants will have some tools for beginning to tease out what they think “leadership” is, what is “good” leadership, what is “bad” leadership, and who the leaders are in their organization – as well as some references to continue this reflection going forward. The third section will introduce leadership as a systems model, including a meta-model for defining and improving that model. This section will involve an interactive group breakout exercise. At the end of this session, participants will have a good start on their unique leadership model to help them “show up with leadership in the moment” or perhaps not – because the task at have may fall outside the boundary of our leadership system.Speaker: Christopher CurleyAn ICE-CE, Chapter Leader ("People Manager") at a global financial institution serving a team of Agile Coaches, a graduate of the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State, with degrees in political science and history, and a student of leadership for the past thirty years (James MacGreggor Burner, Barbara Kellerman, Ahmed Sidky, Bela Banathy, Chris Argyris, et al.) The Great Product Owner: Customer Feedback Loops: Key to Building the Right Product, the Agile Way! In this segment, Meena describes a great product owner who was very effective at product discovery. This PO paired hypothesis with metrics to ensure that what was being built was what the customer wanted. He focused on feedback loops, using customer interviews to learn about the flow and using that feedback to inform delivery decisions. The PO also involved the team in interpreting the numbers, which helped the team understand how to build the right thing. The Bad Product Owner: Technical Leadership Challenges in Product Ownership, leaving the tech lead role behind Meena shared a story about a product owner who transitioned from being a senior developer and was unable to let go of technical leadership. This resulted in the PO intimidating the team by providing specific solutions and telling them exactly what to do, creating an unhealthy dependency. Meena gave one-on-one feedback to the PO, and appealed to the PO's human relations ability. She emphasizes the importance of coaching and giving feedback to the PO, and not just focusing on the rules. [IMAGE HERE] Are you having trouble helping the team work well with their Product Owner? In this segment, Meena shares how, as a scrum master, she strives to step back once the team is self-sufficient. Meena mentions that it is important to make sure that there is no unhealthy dependency between the team and the scrum master. To do this, the scrum master needs to ensure that they are not the only one who can resolve conflicts and that the team is communicating effectively with stakeholders. The success of a scrum master is also measured by whether the team is delivering a quality product. Meena provides several tips for scrum masters, including making sure that it's not about them, and observing the behaviors of the team to determine if they can self-manage. Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Simple and effective conversation focused formats In this segment, Meena shares that when it comes to retrospectives, she prefers to focus on simplicity and creating conversations with the team. She emphasizes the importance of creating insights and actions with the team, rather than just generating data. Meena shares a tip to ask questions that crystallize insights and anchor them in the agile principles. She also shares a story about observing a retro led by someone else where there was a lot of data but no actionable insights. Meena emphasizes that retros are great places for scrum masters to coach and that it's not about the format, but rather about anchoring questions in the agile principles. Meena Venkataraman: Coaching Stakeholders and product owners, a critical aspect of the Scrum Master role Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. In this episode, Meena shared her experience coaching a team where the Product Owner (PO) was hostile towards her. The PO had previously been a project manager with control over many aspects of the project, and had trouble adjusting to the new role in Agile. Meena observed that the team was using a mix of Scrum and Waterfall practices, and the PO was still using language like "resources" and moving team members around like Lego pieces. Meena worked with the team to establish common vocabulary and practices through training and discussions, but found it challenging to help the PO understand the Agile approach. Meena emphasized the importance of working with early adopters in the team and coaching stakeholders outside of the team. Overall, the experience highlights the challenges of change management in Agile and the need for patience, education, and communication to help teams and stakeholders understand and adopt new practices. Meena Venkataraman: Building Psychological Safety, lessons from helping an Agile team to share interpersonal feedback Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. In this segment, Meena shares her experience coaching a team that struggled to take off and was stuck in a cycle. Despite being nice to each other during scrum events, team members were not sharing feedback with each other, and psychological safety was not present in the team. Meena stresses the importance of having hard conversations and discussing the interpersonal topics in the team, and she suggests that teams should have the necessary tools to talk about difficult topics. By highlighting the value that a team coach can bring to a team, Meena emphasizes the importance of psychological safety and how it plays a crucial role in team dynamics. She suggests that teams should be aware of the small things that can become big things and make sure that they are having hard conversations to address interpersonal issues. Ultimately, Meena's experience coaching this team shows that building a successful team is not just about being nice to each other but also about creating a culture of openness, trust, and psychological safety. We also discuss how using approaches such as non-violent communication can help the Scrum Master create an open environment that is also psychologically safe. Featured Book of the Week: Sooner Safer Happier, by Jonathan Smart In this segment, Meena Venkataraman recommends the book "Sooner Safer Happier: Antipatterns and Patterns for Business Agility" by Jonathan Smart as a valuable resource for scrum masters. She notes that as a scrum master, it's important to have a holistic view of agile and to be "T-Shaped" - understanding the various facets of product development. Meena highlights that the book brings the 12 principles of agile to life and is a resource she refers to often. [IMAGE HERE] Do you wish you had decades of experience? Agile, Lean and Design Thinking place high focus on close collaboration with users and people closest to the work being done. While Design Thinking focuses on finding the right problem through empathetic approach and listening to the users, Agile places emphasis on collaboration and feedback loop, while Lean advocates placing power in the hands of those doing the work. Just like design thinking, a key tenet of effective agile application, irrespective of the Agile framework chosen, is to seek frequent inputs from end users and incorporate the feedback in iterations to achieve the right outcomes. Doing this during early stages of projects includes establishing project goals, defining business increments, writing user stories and / or features, establishing success criteria through definition of done and creating product backlogs from which iteration backlogs follow. Throughout the development process, the inputs through feedback process manifests form a crucial part of delivering the ‘right’ product .

After more than a decade of developing products and coaching companies adopting Agile/Lean practices such as Extreme Programming, Scrum, Kanban, and other Lean methodologies, Bruce sold Cyrus in 2014 to focus on broader organizational development initiatives and served as interim CEO, COO, and other executive roles across a number of different high-tech and professional service companies leading these companies through periods of high growth and leadership transition. Today, Bruce uses his experience as an entrepreneur and Inc 500 CEO to help high-growth companies scale more quickly with less drama. He is an expert in business and operational growth strategy, talent planning, performance coaching, and using Lean/Agile to achieve operational excellence. PROFESSIONAL HIGHLIGHTS Graduating from McGill University in Montreal with two degrees in Architecture, Bruce transitioned to digital product development early in his career where he worked as a product strategy consultant for companies such as WebMD, Prada, the Department of Defense, and Motorola. In 2003, he founded Cyrus Innovation, one of the first Lean/Agile consulting firms, and worked with companies such as Boeing, Kaplan Test Prep, Simon & Schuster, Eze Software, and The New York Times on product development and Lean/Agile transformation initiatives. Cyrus was an Inc 5000 honoree for five years in a row and placed #241 on the Inc 500 in 2009. Bruce has been a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization since 2007 and has served in many chapter and regional leadership positions including Learning, Forum, and Accelerator. Bruce has served as the US East Regional Forum Expert and the US East Regional Accelerator Expert. Since 2016, Bruce has been a contributing author to Inc.com where he writes a weekly column on business and leadership. He also hosts to two successful podcasts: Scaling Up Services provides insights and strategies for how to successfully scale service-based businesses and Thinking Outside The Bud explores innovation in the business of cannabis. PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS Born in Philadelphia, Bruce and his family moved to Minnesota when he was four. Growing up in Minnesota fueled his love for nature and the outdoors. As an athlete throughout high school and college, Bruce competed in rowing, cross country skiing, biathlon (shooting and skiing), and triathlon. He completed his first marathon cross country ski race at 18, first of four marathons at age 19, and completed an Ironman triathlon in 2003. Outside of competitive sports, Bruce has climbed to the top of Kilimanjaro, dove the Coral Sea off Australia, and hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc. He’s traveled extensively and has visited six of the seven continents. Bruce is also an avid freshwater and saltwater fly fisherman. He is a father of four young children and lives in New York City. What do cows and trains have in common? They're both on the Kanban board that Sarah Scott uses to visualize the SAFe implementation at Northwestern Mutual. Sarah walks us through the visualization method they use to track progress of their SAFe implementation, which they use Agile-Lean practices and values to execute on the plan. The team calls their visualization tool a "cow board" rather than a Kanban board because of a funny if somewhat morbid occurrence from early in Northwestern Mutual's history, which taught the then-president a valuable lesson on thinking outside the box. SolutionsIQ SAFe consultant Scott Frost hosts at SAFe Summit 2016 in Denver, Colorado. Fredrik talks to Sallyann Freudenberg - “Agile/Lean coach and practitioner, psychology of software development researcher, neuro-diversity advocate, ageing punk-rocker.” - about her research into pair programming, offices for everyone and how people actually (do not) split work when pair programming. We also discuss what makes an expert an expert? What are lists and verbalization really good for? Research versus practise and how and what each side can learn from the other. And why the rift is there in the first place. The goals and methods of the two groups are pretty different. We talked ina surprisingly noisy hotel lobby, so apologies for all the background noise. ZA079: Agile, Lean und Kanban - Freunde oder Feinde?
Welcome to the Software Process and Measurement Cast 272. The SPaMCAST 272 features my interview with Jeff Anderson. We talked about The Lean Change Method and the book of the same title! Jeff's Bio: My mission in life is to help technology knowledge workers be awesome at what they do. Having been in the market since 1994, I have harnessed my initial passion for agile software engineering to provide advisory services to clients that want to thrive in a world of market uncertainty and continuous learning. Over the last several years I have been running Deloitte LEAN, an Agile/Lean transformation service to help clients embrace the knowledge economy. Our service offering has evolved from coaching teams with agile, to end to end transformation of IT using Lean/Kanban, to now coaching businesses to embrace Lean Startup thinking. I admit to am unbridled enthusiasm for any method that bring creativity and joy to the value creation process. A big part of my job is the synthesis of leading edge thinking into contextualized, practical tools. As an example I have adapted lean startup methods to organizational change management, and self published the book "The Lean Change Method". I been nominated for a Brickell Key award, and am a founding fellow of the Lean System Society. Welcome to the Software Process and Measurement Cast 264 The Software Process and Measurement Cast 264 features my interview with Alexei Zheglov. We discussed lean, work-in-process limits and flow. A summary of Alexei's bio from LinkedIn . . . How does value flow through your knowledge-work organization? The reality for many knowledge-work organizations today is, not very well. Therefore, we need to design, evolve, discover and help better systems of work emerge. Alexei's present drive and ability to help guide people to those better ways go back to his programming since the 80s (professionally since the 90s), mastering many practices and discovering manyproblems and solutions. It was more than 10 years ago that I created my first test doubles and human-readable acceptance tests. He was in the engineering trenches of a lean startup long before there was such a term. Alexei doesn't "roll out" "methodologies." He draws from a large number of approaches - such as Kanban (and, by extension, many innovations rapidly created by the global Lean/Kanban community). A3 Thinking, Agile software engineering practices, and others - to discover solutions to problems and to help people learn and see why and how something we do is an improvement. Alexei has actively contributed to the Agile/Lean community in his part of the world over the last several years, emerged as an influencer at Canadian open-space Agile Coach Camps (2010-2013), organized and presented at many user group meetings, and spoke at larger forums such as Agile India 2012, Agile New England, AgileDC and three Canadian AgileTours: Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa. He was one of the translators of the Stoos Communique in January 2012 and founded my region's Limited WIP Society chapter later that year to facilitate learning of the Kanban method and how Lean works in knowledge-work fields in general. His specialties include: Agile and Lean software development. How Lean works in knowledge-work fields. Agile technical practices. Kanban. Personal Kanban. Lean Startup. Systems thinking. Cynefin. Last January, twenty-one business strategists, Agile/Lean practitioners met in Stoos, Switzerland to talk about the mess management is in. Out of that has grown the Stoos movement, a community of business professionals world-wide who believe that by challenging the status quo, a better way can be found for business, management and the role of business in society as a whole. Here, Dawna talks to John Styffe, self-sustainability coach and one of the founding members, about the origins of Stoos, the emergence of Satellites and about #LESS2012 where the Stoos conversation will be continued.
I speak with Tom and Dustin regarding the work they have done to roll out agile within Nationwide. I worked with them both in the past and it is extrordinarily gratifying to see the seeds of your labor grown into such a giant tree. They have created the right ballance of structure that allows them to bring up teams and agility to allow those teams to innovate. I hope you enjoy. -bob payne
