Working at IC System for the past 15 years, Kristina Gursky, Director of Healthcare Account Management, has learned a thing or two, or 12, about the healthcare space's collections process. And, while the revenue cycle in healthcare is always changing, one thing remains the same: the need for compassion and empathy.Gursky said keeping up with all of the various billing processes and changes during the pandemic is challenging, but she and her team strive to be the go-to for process and regulation changes for IC System's clients.“When things do change, that impacts our clients' patients' billing process, so we're sending out communications with what those changes look like, and we're getting on the phone with our clients, explaining what those changes are, and how they may impact them," she said. "We want to keep them informed, because a law may change in a state they are not doing business in, but that their patient now resides in, and IC System follows the law in which the patient lives.”When it comes to patients, Gursky said no one wants to be sick or injured, and the goal is to help patients satisfy their financial commitments positively and compassionately.“We're trying to get the message of advocacy out there,” Gursky said. “We're patient financial advocates, and we're advocating for a way for that patient to find a resolution.”For more information, visit https://www.icsystem.com/.
In this episode, Joe interviews Alyssa Gursky, LPC: artist, research associate and study therapist at the Social Neuroscience and Psychotherapy (SNaP) lab, and founder of Psychedelic Art Therapy LLC, which pioneers ketamine-assisted art therapy. She talks about her first mushroom experience and how her art and creative process instantly felt different – how the judgment and concern about where the art was going disappeared and was replaced by a freedom; a return to a more childlike way of being, where all that mattered was the fun of the creative process, and expressing her inner world in art. They realized how much the creative process related to true embodiment and the ability to be fully present, and how healing it can be to simply be with other people and create art. She talks about: The power of being seen in a group, and how the bravery of one person can completely shift the group dynamic The need for mentorship in the psychedelic space The comfort and freedom found in affinity groups The inspiring lives of Genesis P-Orridge and avant-garde filmmaker, Alejandro Jodorowsky Rick Rubin's ability to treat creativity as a spiritual act and how attending a live wrestling event aligns with non-ordinary states. Gursky is launching a virtual education and support group this March for anyone who wants to integrate art into client work or their own process. Visit her instagram for details. Patients' financial responsibility has been increasing over the years, and this trend is stepping-up healthcare costs, with no assurance it's going to slow down in the future. According to patientengagementhit, patient financial responsibility increased by 11 percent in 2017, a rise from $1,630 in Q4 2016 to $1,813 in Q4 2017, totaling an increase of $187. Many companies have come up with technological payment solutions to help patients and providers handle these funds so other things can be focused on. But with this much dependence on the patient, how can providers ensure the patient's ability to pay and also effectively communicate with the able patients about their bills? On this episode of "Highway to Health," the host, David Kemp, brought on the best person from the industry, Kristina Gursky, the Vice President of Healthcare Client Success at IC System, to provide insight to this question and talk about how they've been helping patients find resolution. To talk about herself and what she does at IC System, Gursky said, "I am responsible for implementation and ongoing relationship management with our healthcare partners. Understanding what issues they are facing so we can offer solutions to their pain points when it comes to patients' dollars."Kemp and Gursky discussed:• About IC systems• How state and federal regulations apply when it comes to collecting funds from the patient.• Other things Gursky is hearing from providers and customers about why they might leverage IC system."Nobody intends to get sick or injured, but all of a sudden, you find yourself in those situations, and you've got to seek services, and with those services comes a price tag. And no, there is so much more money going into patient responsibility than ever before with high deductible health plans or just a general lack of qualified insurance to help cover those situations. When that happens, a bill gets created, and the patient is like, "I don't know how to pay for that." There are so many options available to them to resolve their bills. When a provider can't recover the bill through their own tools or tech, they'll use an outsourcing partner like IC Systems to help do that for them. One of the things I'm proud of with the way we work is that we understand healthcare is different, and we've got that business segment in our office where we are able to provide trainings to our representatives to teach them what a deductible means, what a coinsurance means, etc.," Gursky said. "We want a provider who focuses on what they do best, which is the physical health of the patient and healing them. Outsourcing partners like IC Systems and others help in the revenue cycle by elevating that back office burden of getting paid and ensuring payment is accurate and timely," she added.Kemp asked if IC system has seen a rise in patient responsibility and a rise in outstanding balances. "We have. We've seen our average balances increase over the years, which is a good indicator that more of that financial responsibility is falling to the patient. We've seen an uptick in the number of accounts placed with us. I think what's more important as this responsibility on the patient increases is how we help that patient find resolution," Gursky responded. As a last note to the listeners, Gursky gave her advice to those who have been turned off by the industry:"Anyone that is being turned off by the idea of using collections in the past should relook at the industry and partners that are willing to align with your mission, vision, and values. There are those of us out there that are patient-focused and work hard to maintain community images on your behalf and do so in a compliant manner that allows resolution at the end of the day."Kristina Gursky is the VP of Client Success at IC System. She has deep experience in healthcare business analytics, revenue cycles, and strategy. Kristina is a valued subject matter expert in the healthcare industry, earning an appointment to the AAHAM National Patient Financial Advocate Task Force in 2020.

Today we speak with friend and professional peer, Alyssa Gursky. Alyssa is an art therapist, an artist herself, and a psychedelic therapist working with Ketamine and Cannabis. We had a lovely discussion about her experiences and adventures in Colorado as well as her path of growth and learning through her time at Naropa University in Boulder, CO. We question whether this reality is actually one of the heaven realms, to be realized with a change in perception. We discuss the times of COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, and some wonderful potentials in the world of alternative healing; much needed in a time of apparent, yet illusory divide. We talk about her work within the immersive art world and her experiences of the famed Meow Wolf group, coming soon to Denver. What a wonderful conversation with an awesome slice of Consciousness!!! A bit about this week’s amazing guest in her own words:“I’m finishing up my Masters in Transpersonal Art Therapy at Naropa University. I've been studying Transpersonal Psychology for 6 years now. My focus has always been the theoretical and practical orientation to psychedelic assisted psychotherapy. I was raised by dead heads and frequent cannabis users, who simultaneously maintained deep professionalism and family values. So, drug culture was really inherent in my development. I have so much to say about Psychedelic Art Therapy. I've worked on the MAPS MDMA PTSD study as a night attendant for 4 years now. I work both in Boulder and in Fort Collins on this. I'm a trained Ketamine therapist (trained by three different institutions over the last year) and have done tons of above ground ketamine and cannabis work myself. While undergoing somatic psychedelic therapy (using ketamine, mostly), I made art throughout the whole process.I'm a freelance training coordinator. I've coordinated a training for the Ketamine Training Center, headed by Dr.Phil Wolfson, in addition to my role as Education Outreach Coordinator for Innate Path. I had the gift of being a resident workshop facilitator this summer at Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. I ran workshops on astrology, non ordinary states, and art therapy, In addition to recycled art jewelry making (with recycled scraps from Meow Wolf Denver and Vegas), AND, couples art therapy workshops. Basically, I like to consider myself a servant to the progression of psychedelic medicines. I'm an artist, an art therapist, an integration specialist, a community organizer, and a thought leader.”Alyssa’s InstagramInnate Path’s WebsiteMy 2018 conversation with Saj Razvi of Innate Path on Psychedelic PsychotherapyMy playlist of music that made it into the MAPS MDMA clinical trialsFuture Fossils Podcast is entirely listener-supported. In this episode of Psychedelics Today, host Kyle Buller interviews Alyssa Gursky, a Masters student at Naropa University with a focus in mental health counseling and transpersonal art therapy. Their discussion dives into the intersection between art therapy, transpersonal art, and psychedelics. Ketamine, symbols, and meaning are also areas of this interview. 3 Key Points: Alyssa Gursky has been working with the MDMA research In Boulder, Colorado and now in Fort Collins for the last three years as a night attendant. Creating art is a gift from our unconscious, to be able to see what is happening within ourselves. There is art in therapy and there is art as therapy.
