Es gibt Menschen, die einen grossen Bogen um die Opern von Giacomo Puccini schlagen. Zu schwülstig, üppig. Kitschverdacht! Und tatsächlich lässt sich hier trefflich schwelgen. Im November jährt sich Puccinis Todestag zum 100. Mal. Der so genannte Verismo, den Puccini als Komponist bedient und wo auch mal das ganze Orchester mit der sterbenden Sopranistin mitschluchzt, geht manchen zu nahe. Doch Puccini ist nicht so eindimensional wie ihn seine Verächter darstellen. Das zeigt sich im speziellen Fall seiner «Madama Butterfly» darin, wie ein Bemühen um Authentizität im Kolorit und der Melodik bemerkbar ist. Natürlich ist «Butterfly» dann eine italienische Oper geworden. Doch eine, in welcher gerade dieses Problem der kulturellen Aneignung Thema ist. Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, ein in Japan stationierter amerikanischer Marineoffizier, geht mit der als Geisha tätigen Adligen Cio Cio San eine Scheinehe ein, die diese jedoch für wahrhaftig hält. Für ihn ist Cio Cio San, alias Butterfly, nur ein exotisches Tier, ein Schmetterling, den man aufspiesst und damit ja tötet, um sich an seiner Schönheit zu ergötzen. Für Butterfly dagegen sind der Marineoffizier und seine Heimat Amerika der Traum einer besseren Welt. Sofort nach der Hochzeit reist Pinkerton nach Hause und kommt drei Jahre später nach Japan zurück. Mit seiner «richtigen» Frau, die er, während Cio Cio San auf ihn wartete, in den USA geheiratet hatte. Als Butterfly das erkennt, bringt sie sich um. Puccini verwebt unterschiedlichste musikalische Idiome in seiner Oper, vor allem um den Gegensatz von westlicher und fernöstlicher Kultur hörbar zu machen. So kommt wie ein brutales Signal die heutige amerikanische Nationalhymne vor. Die japanische Färbung erreicht er in der Orchestrierung durch Instrumente wie Tamtams, also japanische Gongs, in verschiedenen Grössen oder japanische Glocken. Und mit einem erotischen Lied, das allerdings aus China stammt. Dieses ist das musikalische Thema der tragischen Titelheldin. In einer halböffentlichen Diskothek diskutieren die Dirigentin Graziella Contratto und der Musikwissenschaftler Anselm Gerhard mit Benjamin Herzog Puccinis 1904 in der Mailänder Scala uraufgeführte Oper. My steering wheel was my best prospect. I was the guy like, “Who is that crazy person talking to himself on the way to work?” That was me because I was practice, drill, rehearse, practice, drill, rehearse. It's second nature. Again, preparing what to say and don't be lazy in language is super important.” TERRY'S ADVICE:  “Business process map the processes the SDRs are taking a day, whether it's prospecting, demos, follow ups, or proposals for AEs. You have no idea how much time is wasted not selling. You also have all the tools. You likely have the Salesforce, ZoomInfos and Gongs and everything. You have the exact same tech stack that your competitors do, but your competitor probably is automated twice as much as you have. Take a look at your rev ops stack, look at what your team is doing. I guarantee you there's 50% plus more efficiency there that you just haven't even deployed.”

First Rishi did Home Alone, then Rishi did Southampton FC, then Rishi did the oldest youth centre known to man - but what Rishi didn't do, was the truth.  Sunak's 2023 lookback was interesting... In that it was a lookback on a 2023 that will have been familiar to absolutely no one, but worry not, as you'll be sure to find comedian Tilly Thorpe's version is far more on point.  The ladies discuss the latest in global Britain, including Sunak opening the year with a tweet announcing the end of global Britain. Because stopping a Chinese student from bringing their mother to the UK is now delivering for the British people... Then it's onto the biggest bells of all - Gongs! Jemma and Marina lament a country where Sir Wetherspoon is now a thing and breakers of electoral law don't get banned from parliament, but instead embedded within it. When you go to a symphony performance, you will often hear the sound of cymbals ringing out at a climax in the music. Or perhaps a loud ringing sound of a gong will be heard. These are the instruments that can be heard over all the others in the orchestra. Imagine if you were standing right next to the percussionist right at that moment; it would be deafening. This is why first Corinthians chapter 13 starts with this analogy. If I could speak all the languages of Earth or the languages of angels, but I didn't love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If we don't demonstrate love in our actions, all anyone can hear is a loud crashing every time we open our mouths. Our actions speak louder than our words. Show gentleness and love in your dealings with others, and they will be much more likely to be able to listen to you and to hear what you say when you talk about your faith and when you talk about Jesus.
