On April 11, 2016 a 51-year-old woman went missing in Royston, England. It was initially reported that she had gone to the family's holiday home, but it was soon discovered she had never been there and an investigation ensued. Three months later, her remains were uncovered in the septic tank of her own home. Her husband was immediately charged with her murder, which led investigators to a shocking revelation that she was not his only victim. This is the story of Helen Bailey. Years before Ian Stewart murdered his fiancée, U.K. author Helen Bailey, and disposed of her body in the cesspit at their Hertfordshire home, the family of his first wife feared he might already be a killer. There was always something suspicious about the way 47-year-old Diane had died in the backyard at the couple's home in Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, in June 2010. With no witnesses around on that hot summer's day, Stewart was able to fool police into believing that Diane, who had previously suffered from mild epilepsy but had successfully controlled the condition for 18 years with medication, had suffered a fatal fit. While he was found guilty and convicted of Helen's murder, Ian Stewart almost got away with murdering his first wife. Working as a builder/carpenter, woodturning was a craft I knew very little about before 2001. I had done some research and found a woodturner in my nearest town. Lucky for me, this woodturner was one of the finest turners in Ireland. Willie Stedmond, one of the founding members of the Irish Woodturners Guild, was giving night classes to which I attended a few. It is always my first advice to anyone interested in woodturning, get some lessons and join a club. I also did the latter and met some great people who helped and encouraged me along the way.My turning has progressed and moved through different areas of this wonderful craft as the years went on. I had many years and long periods of no woodturning time whatsoever due to work and other commitments, but the draw was always there. The need to make shavings! I am very proud of the recognition I have received from my peers and other artists over the years for my work, demonstrating and winning pieces. I am also very honoured to have my work in collections across the world. When Mark Baker, GMC Woodturning magazine approached me to write for him, I was completely taken aback. I straight away said no to Mark, but Mark persevered and said he would help me. So, with huge thanks to Mark I have many articles gone to print.As of late, with the dawning of virtual woodturning, I also have entered into the world of delivering IRDs, (Interactive Remote Demonstrations), in high definition. Working as a team, myself, my daughter Chloe and Helen Bailey, are able to offer an excellent well prepared service to clubs and individuals. We also run a meeting called “Meet the Woodturner”, where we interview artists from all over the world and get a fascinating insight into their woodturning lives and careers. Our audience is from all over the world and attendees get to ask the guests questions through a chat box on the virtual platform we use. Helen Bailey is a marine biologist at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. She and her colleagues recorded two months of underwater sounds, in that same area off the coast of Maryland. They used automated software to fish out 200 bottlenose dolphin whistles from the noise, and visually compared the spectrograms. Here's a normal whistle.  But what they found was that dolphins dumbed down the complexity of their whistles and raised their pitch, when they were competing with shipping noise. Which apparently helps, but could also hurt, their ability to communicate."By using simpler calls, yes, there is a risk they're not communicating as much information as they would if it was quieter. Also for younger dolphins they actually learn these sounds from hearing other dolphins. So they're hearing this much simpler language." The results—and a few of those spectrograms—are in the journal Biology Letters.
