Richard Davidson -- Helping to Heal: the Science of Well-Being

Awakin Call

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 3, 2024

"Why is it that certain people are vulnerable to life's slings and arrows and why are other people more resilient?" Dr. Richard Davidson, Ph.D, felt guided by this question, and dedicated himself to developing insight into how our brains regulate our emotions. But in 1992, Richard was inspired by the Dalai Lama to revise his initial question and instead consider: What qualities foster well-being? "His Holiness challenged me and asked why we are not using the tools of modern neuroscience to study qualities such as kindness and compassion rather than negative qualities of the mind such as depression and anxiety. I had no good answer, and on that day, I made a commitment to His Holiness and to myself that I would do everything within my power to help place these positive qualities on the scientific map," Richard said. That renewed and refocused commitment has generated ripples of goodness. Named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2006, Richard founded in 2008 the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has served as a faculty member and professor since 1984. Richard's research is broadly focused on the neural bases of emotion and methods to promote human flourishing including meditation and related contemplative practices. A prolific researcher, he has authored more than 570 articles, numerous chapters and reviews, and edited 14 books. His research has identified four keys to well-being - resilience, outlook, attention, and generosity - that can be strengthened in each of us through practice. Richard founded Healthy Minds Innovations (HMI), a nonprofit affiliate of the Center for Healthy Minds, in 2014. HMI translates well-being science into tools (including a Kindness Curriculum and the Healthy Minds program and app) to cultivate and measure well-being. "I really feel a moral calling [to help people develop well-being as a skill], because I feel most people would agree that the trajectory we've been on is not a particularly healthy or sustainable one. Everyone has a role to play in this, everyone can be a participant, just like with climate science. Everyone can play a constructive role in helping the planet heal," said Richard. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Richard earned his Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from NYU before completing his Ph.D in Personality, Psychopathology, and Psychophysiology at Harvard University. He authored (with Sharon Begley) the New York Times bestseller, The Emotional Life of Your Brain and co-authored Altered Traits with Daniel Goleman. In 2000, Richard was the recipient of the American Psychological Association's prestigious Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award in 2000. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2017, and appointed to the Governing Board of UNESCO's Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) in 2018. Join us on February 3 for a conversation with this transformative psychologist and well-being advocate.

We have the privilege of sitting down Safiya, who only recently fled from her native Ukraine with her daughter. We are also joined by one of our favourite past guests on the podcast, the marvelous Joan Koenig (ep 79). Joan helps facilitate the conversation. Joan and her friends (Janice Giarracco & Michael Clancey) have been instrumental in helping Safiya find safe haven in France over the last month. A trained psychologist, Safiya ran a special school for children in the Donbas region before the war in 2014 forced her to relocate. After a brief stay in Moscow her vocation had her return to her Ukraine, this time in Kyiv – until she once again lost everything after the start of the war in February 2022. She recounts the experience of living under the real threat of missile attacks and bombing throughout the day and night and her eventual exodus to the Polish border. She describes the emotional episode watching men separated from their families as they left them to cross the border. And we learn so much more from this extraordinary woman. We listen to her recounts of her multiple near death experiences over her lifetime so far and what particular gifts each of those experiences have left her. Spoiler alert: one of them is healing. There are too many take-aways from this discussion: the value of empathy, of teaching through play, of fairy-tale therapy, of learning to see your ancestral program … and the ultimate value of the pursuit to help others.   During our talk, Safiya gave an impromptu numerological reading of your host and his recent ancestral lineage and she was bang-on with her entire diagnosis. We decided to edit most of this out as they are of a personal nature. But, we may very well divulge some details in future episodes…   Kindly see below information on the Foundation set up to help Safiya – so that she can help others who are in the same boat during this time:   ·        For donations that do not require a fiscal receipt, or a French receipt: https://www.fondation-enfance.org/creer-ma-fondation/fondations-et-fonds-abrites/koenig-foundation-2-2/   ·        For fiscal receipts in the USA: donors must donate to CafAmerica.org, and indicate they want the funds to go to the above link (in France). Main USA Link: CafAmerica.org & https://www.cafamerica.org/give-now/   ·        For fiscal receipts in Canada: donors must donate to CafCanada.ca and indicate they want the funds to go to the above link (in France). Main Canada link: CafCanada.ca & https://www.cafcanada.ca/givenow/

Big Ideas: What are Bedside Visitations [00:59] – Many times there is a space in the end of life where people who have died before “come back” to the bedside of the patient. I am told they return to help the other person cross over to the other side. In the Doulagivers Training, we have a section called, “Indications that Someone is Headed into the Transition Phase.” One of these common indications is that the patient will see loved ones that have died already or even Angelic Figures at the bedside. In my experience, having worked with over one thousand people at the end of life from all different backgrounds, cultures, and religions - people are most often visited by a loved one or family member that has died before them. Not everyone will have this experience or share with you that they had it. It was reported recently that Betty White's last word before she passed away was, “Allen.” This is the name of her deceased husband and is a great example of what we're talking about here.   How does it happen, Why does it happen, What does it mean? [4:00] – If you've ever had somebody that you're caring for or that you loved at the end of life, and they've had this experience - you will never look at the world the same way again. Whether or not you believe this is truly happening, as a practitioner, this is a strong indication that this person is getting close to having their end of life. From a scientific standpoint, everything is energy. In the Doulagivers Training, we talk about how we are composed of four main bodies of energy (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual). In my opinion, from having worked with so many people at the end of life, there is a part of the end-of-life journey where the patient's physical body is diminishing and their spiritual body is growing. There is a moment in time where they meet equally, so essentially the patient has one foot still in this physical world and one foot in the next at the same time. It is incredibly powerful.     A Change of Perspective [6:09] – I have sat bedside with people who have woken up from a nap or overnight sleep with so much new information. Waking up and excitedly exclaiming, “I get it now! It all makes sense!” They act as though all the pieces to the puzzle of life now fit together. Why? Because that spiritual growth within them is providing access to a higher perspective. It provides a sense of all-knowing wisdom, connection, no judgment, and unconditional love and they're now looking through that lens. They've now accessed a higher part of their energetic frequency. It changes everything about how they look at their life. The peace, serenity, and joy that can accompany this experience is indescribable. As a practitioner, when you get to see your patient in that state of serenity and peace, you will hold that in your heart forever. You will look back on that time not with the heaviness of uncomfortable thoughts and pain, but rather, by remembering the energetic and loving space that that person was in. This experience happens often regardless of where in the world the person is, or what culture or religion they belong to – it is a universal theme at the end of life. Death is a unifying force in our humanity, and it is my belief that we are all part of one universal consciousness.   We Don't Have to Wait Until the End [9:55] – We can do our work to raise our energetic frequency right here, right now. We don't have to wait until the end of life when it organically happens. We are in control of how we choose to do things – how we think, speak, and act are all within our control. We can change and strengthen our energetic frequency and perspective right here, right now by being intentional with the way we lead our lives. I have learned everything I know about how to live – to live in flow, to live in love, to live in connection – from the people I have had the honor and privilege to work with at the end of life.     The Bigger Meaning [13:40] – What is life about? Is it so much more than we've been taught or that we mostly know and how we're operating? I absolutely think so. We are all connected to on unconditional loving consciousness. The world and all of nature – the entire universe is tethered together. We need to look out and care for one another. We need to meet each other in compassionate presence without judgment. What is this journey of life about? My belief is that it is the school of life – we are here to learn lessons, to get back to finding our true self before we get to the end of life where it organically happens. Every experience you have is an opportunity to get closer to alignment with your higher energetic frequency. It is the choices you make, the way that you want to live your life every single day – with your thoughts, with your actions, with your purpose, with your compassionate presence – that will change that energetic alignment. You can access it now; you don't have to wait. Memorable Quotes: “I have learned everything I know about how to live – to live in flow, to live in love, to live in connection – from the people I have had the honor and privilege to work with at the end of life.” – Suzanne B. O'Brien RN   “The universal laws that people at the end-of-life share say that we're all connected to one unconditional loving consciousness. All of us, all of the animals, all of the elements, all of nature – all of it is connected. So, we need to look out and care for one another.” – Suzanne B. “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” Most of us understand that this saying is alluding to the fragile portion of a chain, where it is most likely to break. However, if your health is your “weak link” then a particular chain might be the answer. Peptides are chains of amino acids, and certain peptides can do wonders to boost our immune systems. In this podcast, Endocrinologist Dr. Edwin Lee discusses two specific kinds of peptides and the startling potential benefits of both. 1. Thymosin Alpha 1 is a natural peptide that is derived from the Thymus gland. It controls the immune system in a way similar to how a conductor controls a symphony. This peptide can help you resist infections, illnesses, and diseases. 2. BPC 157 is an essential Body Protection Compound and comes from our stomach - but we don't make enough. It is a healing peptide and helps with acid reflux and GERD. It helps prevent acid from coming back up. ---In this episode, you will discover:--- - Peptides and petitions - Why it's good to be married to a doctor - https://savepeptides.org - Medical options being taken away - Re-establishing resilience ---Meet Dr. Edwin Lee--- Thanks in part to his groundbreaking insight in his field, his best-selling books, and his many significant presentations at major medical conferences around the world, Dr. Edwin Lee is a respected expert authority on hormonal balance and wellness, and a leader in defining the future of regenerative and functional medicine. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, and he founded the Institute for Hormonal Balance in 2008. His driving purpose is to focus on the prevention of diseases rather than just treating the impact of the disease - which, in many cases, could have been prevented. Dr. Lee invites all listeners to go to the website savepeptides.org and sign a quick petition so that our basic healthcare choices REMAIN our own. Don't let anyone take away your right to make your own healthcare decisions.

Did you ever think of reading for helping to heal trauma? We talk to Jessica Sinarski about her books and reading as a way to help connect with those who have experienced trauma and help them heal. This week we are joined by Jessica Sinarski, a Licensed Professional Counselor of Mental Health who works with children and has so much knowledge and experience to share with us! In this episode we talk about: 1. Jessica’s experience and background working with children and people who have experienced significant trauma in their early lives as well as her passion for digging into the effects of early trauma on the brain and the different paths to healing. 2. Why and how stories and reading can play a role in helping and working with kids who have experienced trauma. “Story is a powerful tool for connecting and healing.” 3. Why it is important to bring the “big” and “scary” parts of ourselves or our experiences to the surface and process them. 4. Why picture books are a good medium for kids to be able to engage with different parts of the story, depending on their situation and needs. “That is my goal- to start young and often, dealing with the tough stuff in life.” 5. Jessica’s experiences seeing picture books help people of all ages- even adults- recognize, express or process their feelings. 6. The books that Jessica has written and how they came to be. “There are kids who desperately need these stories, ...but then they are empathy builders for kids who haven’t had a lot of stressors yet so they can be a friend.” 7. How the books can help take the shame out of having these big feelings and help both kids and adults understand where the feelings come from and how to handle them. 8. What types of books can be helpful when trying to connect with kids who have experienced trauma and a few ideas on when and how to use them. “Humans... have these little windows where we can learn... and where we’re receptive and ready and can soak things up. Sometimes that’s at bedtime during reading, but that’s where we have to be really tuned into the child, because sometimes it’s during play or it’s when we’re out for a walk…” 9. Heaps of book recommendations to help kids with their feelings and experiences! 10. Extra resources for parents and adults trying to parent and work with kids who have gone through trauma. “We can’t fix everything. Sometimes you just have to sit with it.” In Reading: Helping to Heal Trauma we mention We are so grateful to Jessica for taking the time to talk with us! I call Christina a Diva: “A woman who ‘engages in unreasonable behavior and makes demands on others that potentially exceed the measure of hers and their talent!’"Christina set the table for our interview by stating her motto; “My life purpose is to be a force for good through genuine love and kindness in order to raise the vibration of planet earth.” With that said, she is the creator of the Aviation Wellness Community, a Facebook community that brings together aviation professionals who support, encourage, and love on one another while also providing important health and wellness resources to this unique community who face challenges unlike most earth-bound creatures! In her interview she speaks candidly about the unique challenges of her life growing up as a “party girl,” the effect that had on her and how her past motivated her to change her ways and readied her for her career as a corporate flight attendant, being solely responsible in the cabin for the safety, comfort and well-being of her high-end clients. She has a powerful, convincing yet comforting way of telling her story and she talks about the importance, and challenge, of “walking her talk” while trying to be authentic with her feelings. You will be motivated to take her main attribute, as told to her by one of her friends, that of “taking a negative and turning it into a positive” and using that in your own life. Christina has an admittedly low tolerance for “small talk” and constantly seeks to find ways to help others create meaning in her and their life. She wants to know “what your biggest problems, your biggest challenges in life are!” She says how important it is to be open and realize that your story, your life can be an important learning experience for others and how important it is to share your story with others. She seeks constantly to help others discover their vision, their passion in life and how she can inspire and support others to put that into action, especially during these times when it’s possible to totally “reset” our lives.

Hey Divas!   Today on the show I am sharing an inspiring story of a mama who is definitely being a diva in her life! This story touched my heart so much and I’m excited to share it with you on the podcast.   This is the story of Bradley and Leslie Bienz and how this one family is helping to change the medical protocol with regards to tube-feeding and treating children with feeding disorders. Bradley was born prematurely and had to endure many surgeries and medical procedures which resulted in medical traumas and a severe feeding disorder. His disorder was so severe, he was unable to eat, and he required a feeding tube. Today on the show you will hear his mom, Leslie, sharing her story of how she chose not to feed her son with any sugary drinks, meals replacement shakes or Pediasure and what she's done instead. I think you will find this inspiring, illuminating and more than anything I wish this will give you hope (if you are struggling with something similar). Sending you much love & healing!!
