https://youtube.com/live/IjPHR2jXGGc?feature=share On Saturday (October 19), Ozzy Osbourne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist, marking his second recognition by the institution, following his 2006 induction with BLACK SABBATH. Actor and TENACIOUS D frontman Jack Black inducted Ozzy, calling him "the greatest frontman in the history of rock 'n' roll." Black recalled seeing the cover of Ozzy's debut solo album, Blizzard Of Ozz, saying, "It was the most metal thing I had ever seen, and I didn't even know what metal was. Then I went back to Ozzy's BLACK SABBATH albums, and I thought, 'Unholy shit, this guy invented heavy metal—the darkest, heaviest stuff the world had ever heard.'" Seated on a throne, Osbourne humbly accepted the award, saying: "Well, here we are. I can't believe it myself. Let me get the thank-yous out of the way. I'd like to thank everyone who voted me into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for my solo work. A great thank you from the bottom of my heart. My fans have been so loyal over the years, and I cannot thank them enough. I've been lucky to play with some of the world's greatest musicians, and many of them are here tonight. But I have to especially mention Randy Rhoads. If I hadn't met Randy, I don't think I'd be sitting here now. And, more than anyone, I have to thank my wife Sharon, who saved my life, and my grandbabies and babies. I love them all." With his brief speech concluded, Ozzy handed the mic back to Jack Black, and an all-star performance followed. The backing band featured RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith, METALLICA bassist (and former Ozzy band member) Robert Trujillo, producer Andrew Watt, and keyboardist Adam Wakeman. They were joined by TOOL's Maynard James Keenan and Wolfgang Van Halen for a powerful rendition of “Crazy Train.” Zakk Wylde and country star Jelly Roll then took the stage for "Mama, I'm Coming Home," and Billy Idol closed the set with "No More Tears," accompanied by his longtime guitarist Steve Stevens. Sammy Hagar and Slash Light Up the Stage with “Hot Blooded” at the 2024 Rock Hall Induction for Foreigner The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony became a night to remember when rock icons Sammy Hagar and Slash joined forces to pay tribute to the legendary band Foreigner. As the hall reverberated with excitement, the duo tore into a blistering performance of Foreigner's timeless classic, “Hot Blooded,” sending shockwaves through the audience. With Sammy Hagar's unmistakable voice soaring through the iconic chorus and Slash's signature Les Paul riffs electrifying the crowd, it was a performance that honored Foreigner's legacy while bringing their music into a new era. The chemistry between these two rock veterans was undeniable, as they traded licks and vocal lines, breathing fresh life into the 1978 hit. Hagar, no stranger to the Rock Hall after his own induction with Van Halen, shared his admiration for Foreigner during the ceremony. "These guys paved the way for so many of us," Hagar remarked, "and it's an honor to be here, rocking out to a song that still gets the blood pumping after all these years." Slash echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the influence Foreigner had on the next generation of rock musicians. "Their songwriting, their energy, it's all a part of the DNA of rock 'n' roll." Foreigner's induction has been a long time coming, and this powerhouse collaboration made sure it was celebrated in style. As the final notes of “Hot Blooded” rang out, the crowd was on their feet, a testament to Foreigner's enduring impact on rock history, and the incredible performance delivered by two of the genre's most enduring stars. Whether you were there in person or watching from home, this performance will go down as one of the standout moments in the Rock Hall's history—a true celebration of rock and roll's past, present, and future.

Vision Quest is the story of high school senior wrestler who wants to lose weight and get into a lower weight class just to battle a seemingly impossible foe. The movie which starred Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino was not a box office success, but has since become an 80's cult hit. Vision Quest is the rare movie which has been helped by it movie soundtrack. The soundtrack is filled with many successful 80's artist, including two songs from Madonna who was skyrocketing into superstardom at the time. Most of the artists, with the exception of Madonna and The Style Council, were hard rock acts, like Foreignor, Dio, Sammy Hagar and Journey. Other artist involved were Don Henley, Red Rider and John Waite. The album went platinum in the United States and made it to #30 on the US Billboard 200. Tracks like Only The Young, Hot Blooded, Hungry For Heaven and Lunatic Fringe as still found on classic rock stations this day. But it was the two songs including, Crazy For You, by Madonna that made this soundtrack become of the best and most popular of the 1980's. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 50 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. Oh, what a night! Our guest is  legendary, superbly talented guitar player Michael Staertow. He is currently a member of the legendary band, The Guess Who, which is currently gearing up to release its latest creation, Plein D'Amour. Band members Derek Sharp, Michael Staertow, Leonard Shaw, Michael Devin, and founding member, Garry Peterson have crafted a collection of songs that raises the bar and continues to take things up a notch both musically and sonically. Before The Guess Who, Michael was the guitarist for Lou Gramm. Michael is one of only a few guitar players to work with Lou Gramm, the voice of “Hot Blooded,” “Head Games,” “Juke Box Hero,” “I Want to Know to What Love Is” and other signature songs of the classic-rock era. That makes him a full-fledged member of a significant guitar-playing fraternity that also includes Foreigner founder Mick Jones, Nils Lofgren and Vivian Campbell. Michael has been the focus of articles in Guitar World, Guitar One and Vintage Guitar magazines, and he was featured in Gbase.com's Gearhead Gazette as well as  featured on many popular podcasts. An aspiring vlogger, Michael captures short scenes from life on the road with Lou Gramm and artists like Dennis Elliot and Deen Castronovo to share on social media. Michael has also added Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp “Rock Star Counselor” to his pedigree.

What the Riff?!?

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2023 38:03

Aside from having a terrific title, the seventh studio album by REO Speedwagon would be the one which would bring them mainstream success.  You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish was the first album to be co-produced by guitarist Gary Richrath and lead singer Kevin Cronin, and was the first to break into the top 40 on the Billboard 200 album charts in the US, peaking at number 29.  It also was the first on which Bruce Hall was a part of the group, replacing Gregg Philbin on bass.  The rest of the group was Nel Doughty on keyboards and Alan Gratzer on drums.   Doughty and Gratzer were college students when the band was founded, and Doughty was inspired to create the name of the group when he saw it written on the board of his “History of Transportation” class. This album trends toward melodic rock and power ballads, which perhaps explains the broader appeal they received.  Richrath's guitar hooks blended well with Cronin's strong vocals, and the result was a polished sound that worked well for both rock anthems and more pensive ballads.  The energy of the studio album also seemed to finally catch the essence and energy of their live performances. The band would go on to become one of the stars of the arena rock world in the 80's, and this album is where that really started for them.Rob brings us this group at the start of their ascent to stardom. Roll with the ChangesThis infectious rock anthem leads off the album, and is a timeless staple of the band's concerts.  Kevin Cronin was inspired to write this song when he returned to the band in 1976 and relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles.  Changes in his life caused the song to hit him instantly.  He started writing the lyrics on a paper bag in his Ford Pinto while driving to L.A.Runnin' BlindThis deeper cut is the third track on the album.  It has a solid guitar riff and we believe a “Cheap Trick” sound.  The lyrics discuss a lover who is always on the road playing the guitar and leaving someone behind.  “Change is comin' no more runnin'”Time for Me to FlyAnother song written by Kevin Cronin, this ballad was inspired by Cronin's breakup with his high school girlfriend.  Unlike “Roll with the Changes,” this song took Cronin 10 years to write, and had been rejected for previous albums.  While it would peak at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100, it would become one of their best known songs and a timeless ballad.Say You Love Me or Say GoodnightAnother deeper cut that rocks, this one closes out the album.  The lyrics are a call to either make up or split up.  It is a great jam to end the concert or album.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture The Magic of LassieJimmy Stewart makes his last appearance in this installment of the film franchise starring the famous collie. STAFF PICKS:Party by Boston Bruce kicks off the staff picks with the sixth track from Boston's second studio album, “Don't Look Back”  This straight-up party song was co-written by Brad Delp and Tom Scholz, one of only two songs on the album not solely written by Scholz.  While it wasn't released as a single, it received significant airplay on rock stations and appears on Boston's Greatest Hits album.Raise a Little Hell by TrooperWayne keeps the energy up with a rocker off Canadian band Trooper's fourth studio album.  Randy Bachman produced this album entitled “Thick as Thieves.”  It appears in the first season of the NETFLIX show “Stranger Things.”  While not having a big hit in the US (this one went to number 59) Trooper was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2023.Hot Blooded by Foreigner Lynch brings us a monster hit written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones.  While most people with a fever of 103 would need some rest, the song describes the cure as an after-show rendezvous with the girl he's been checking out.  The song did more than dance up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 3.Runaway by Jefferson StarshipRob takes the tempo down to close out the staff picks with the second single from the album “Earth.”  This song made it to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Marty Balin takes vocal duties on this song, alternating between a smooth sound in the verses and a grittier, funky sound in the bridge. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Unidentified Flying Tuna Trot by REO Speedwagon This instrumental off “You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish” gives us the opportunity to double dip on the episode's featured album by REO Speedwagon.

Hair band Skid Row hails from Tom's River, New Jersay.  The band was formed in 1986 by bassist Rachel Boland and guitarist Dave "Snake" Sabo, and rounded out with guitarist Scotti Hill and drummer Rob Affuso.  Lead vocalist Sebastian Bach was recruited after being seen as a wedding singer at the age of 18 well before Adam Sandler would reveal this as a potential career option and path to love and fame.  Sabo was a high school friend of Jon Bon Jovi, and the two made a pact that if one was sucessful in the music business they would help the other out.  This led to Bon Jovi's manager Doc McGee seeking out Skid Row and getting them a contract with Atlantic Records in 1988.Skid Row was the band's eponymously titled debut album, and it would prove to be a huge success over time.  Though it received mixed critical reviews, the album went to number 6 on the Billboard 200 charts, and would be certified 5x platinum in 1995 by the RIAA.  The band headlined tours for Bon Jovi and Aerosmith in 1989-1990.  Bach would be the front man for the band for their first three albums until 1996, when friction between himself and Sabo led to his departure.  Skid Row is still active as of 2022, and has released six albums to date.John Lynch takes the helm on this album in his debut as a permanent member of the What the Riff crew. Youth Gone WildThis rocking anthem was the first single released from the album.  No matter what walk of life you are from, you are one of us - the youth gone wild.  Be true to yourself and not to what others expect of you.  "Hi man, there's something that you oughta know.  I tell ya Park Avenue leads to Skid Row."I Remember YouThe third single would be the one to really put Skid Row on the map.  It is a power ballad depicting a guy who can't get over a long lost love.  Bass player Rachel Bolan contributed the lyrics.  The line "love letters in the sand" was also the title of a number 1 hit from 1957 by Pat Boone.Sweet Little SisterA deeper cut that sounds a lot like Motley Crue chronicles the trouble that a boy crazy sister of a member of the band can create.  "For such a sweet little lady I would swear she's rotten to the core.  Oh yes she got her hands in the cookie jar."18 and LifeThis darker ballad tells the story of Ricky who kills someone with a gun while drunk and is sentenced to life in prison.  Dave "Snake" Sabo and Rachel Bolan wrote the song after reading a story in the local paper about an 18 year old who accidentally killed his friend with a gun he thought was unloaded.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme song from the animated series “ALF:  The Animated Series” After its "real life" series, the cat-munching alien ALF returned in animated form.  It finished its run in 1989. STAFF PICKS:Charlotte Anne by Julian Cope Bruce leads off the staff picks with a forgotten song that hit number 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart at the time.  This is the first single from Cope's fourth solo album "My Nation Underground," an album that Cope considers to be a poor album.  Julian Cope comes out of the Liverpool punk scene, and his solo work is a bit reminiscent of the Cure.Driven Out by The FixxRob brings us British new wave band The Fixx in a work off their fifth album.  It talks about the pillaging of the land driven by greed.  "I'm cooking with microwaves to warm up food not seen the soil - plugged into my TV, used to the lies their telling me."  It hit number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the mainstream rock charts.Funky Cold Medina by Tone Loc Wayne's staff pick was everywhere in 1989.  A funky cold medina was an aphrodisiac, and its use would get the singer into all kinds of trouble when he gives it to his dog, or to a girl who turns out to be a transvestite.  It peaked at number 3 on the charts, and if the main beat sounds familiar, it may be because it comes from "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner. Two Hearts by Phil CollinsJohn features a song Collins sang for his poorly received film "Buster."  Lamont Dozier of Motown fame wrote this song, and it was Dozier's 14th and last number 1 song.  It is about two people connected through time and space even when they are not together.   NOVELTYTRACK:Let's Put the X in Sex by KissEven rock legends put out a failure from time to time.  This could be considered one of those - you be the judge!

Korea24 – 2022.04.01. (Friday) News Briefing: The government has eased social distancing rules once again, raising the cap on private gatherings to ten, and relaxing business hour curfews for restaurants and cafes to midnight. Officials have said that these could be the last set of changes before all restrictions - except indoor mask-wearing - are lifted, if a "definite" decline in daily COVID-19 cases is seen over the next two weeks. (KOO Hee-jin) In-Depth News Analysis (Weekly Economy Review): Last week, President Moon Jae-in tapped Rhee Chang-yong, a senior official at the International Monetary Fund, to be the next Bank of Korea governor. Economics Professor Yang Jun-sok from the Catholic University of Korea joins us on the line to assess his credentials and what he might bring to the role. We also take a look at South Korea's record export and import figures in March, and the possibility of further fuel tax cuts amid rising international energy prices. Korea Trending with Walter Lee: 1. Text messages between the victim and suspect of the ‘Gapyeong Valley Murder Case’, who is on the run, resurfaced online shocking many in South Korea. ("너무 배고파, 만원만"…'가평 계곡 익사' 남편, 이은해에게 보낸 카톡보니) 2. Lotte Department Store has caused controversy after adopting a strict new dress code for employees working in their stores. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and won Best Original Screenplay last week. The other is a local gangster movie, ‘Hot Blooded (뜨거운 피)’, set in 1990’s Busan, starring Jeong Woo.

Whether you're building your career or a business of your own, you have a big advantage: Nobody ever sees the rebel coming. The established players in any industry are always fat, sluggish, and content. You're defiant, swift, and hungry. Because your ideas are daring (and probably defiant), you'll blindside the competition. By the time they catch on, you've picked their pockets, stolen their best customers, and won the admiring press. As a rebel, you will meet resistance, but you look forward to it. Rebellion is an act of war. The established order always counterpunches and usually wears brass knuckles. Rare Breeds don't get what they want by adapting to the conventional rules: instead, they use the traits often considered shortcomings as tools for creation and growth. Combining examples and practical tools, our guest identifies seven vices-turned-virtues—Rebellious, Audacious, Obsessed, Hot-Blooded, Weird, Hypnotic, Emotional—to help disruptors and trailblazers discover their inner Rare Breed and tap into them to realize their full potential in work and life. The Rock n Roll Archaeologist gets to talk extensively with Mick Jones of Foreigner. This is Mick's first interview since the Covid-19 pandemic took all acts off the road. We talk a little about that, but mostly it is a deep dig into his life as a working musician climbing the ranks until hitting it big with one of the best selling classic rock acts ever. The architect behind Foreigner's extraordinary catalogue of smash hits, Mick has crafted some of rock music's most enduring songs and produced 10 multi-platinum albums. Grammy and Golden Globe nominated songwriter, performer and producer and winner of the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriter award in Britain in 1998, Mick first began playing guitar in his early teens. "I knew early on that I could never hold a regular job. I had to play guitar. I had to somehow make my way into music" he says. After starting his own Blues/Rock band and opening for the Rolling Stones in pubs across South London, Mick's first big break came in 1964 when he moved to Paris and was hired to play with French singer Sylvie Vartan and later hired to work as musical director for French rock icon, Johnny Hallyday. Jones returned to his native England in the early 70's to reform the band Spooky Tooth with Gary Wright. After Spooky Tooth broke up, Mick moved to New York City and, in 1976, formed Foreigner with fellow Brits Ian Mc Donald and Dennis Elliott, and Americans Lou Gramm, Alan Greenwood and Ed Gagliardi. In his own words:"My initial musical vision for Foreigner was to combine Blues and R&B with British Rock and make it sound soulful and authentic. I?d grown up in England and had the English influence but I was also inspired by many elements of American music, from Mississippi Blues to Country and Western. Foreigner was the vehicle to get that musical blend across.""I'm grateful to be surrounded by the talented musicians that make up Foreigner today. Now each night on stage brings Foreigner's music alive with energy and excitement. Thanks guys for making it all new again!"Quotes from Mick talking about Foreigner and the new "Feels Like The First Time" 3-Disc Album:"When doing the ‘Hot Blooded' solo I did my damnedest to set the amp on fire, which is what originally happened," Mick says laughing, "I turned it up to 11, I kicked it. . . ""My feeling over the years is that if you can write a song on an acoustic instrument, and it sounds good, you know you have a good song," Mick explains. "The first time we approached these songs this way I was flabbergasted about how well they adapted back to their nucleus. It's been an eye opener how stripping the songs bare brings fresh meaning and emotion out of them. The reaction has been so strong that it made me rethink the whole thing and put more attention to the unplugged show. People feel the intimacy, I talk about the songs and how they came about.""It's' been 6 years since the new line-up has been in place. The success, for me, merited giving the public studio recordings of songs by the new band," Mick Jones asserts. "People know the new Foreigner, so the Foreigner they see live is the same Foreigner they can get on record."https://www.foreigneronline.com/welcomehttps://www.amazon.com/Foreigners-Tale-Mick-Jones/dp/1910978167/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=mick+jones&qid=1589822628&sr=8-4 (edited)
