Nathan and Ryan open the doors to House II: The Second Story (1987), the bonkers sequel that asks, “What if your haunted house came with a portal to other dimensions… and also a baby pterodactyl?” From undead cowboys to prehistoric creatures, this episode dives into the bizarre and charmingly goofy world of this horror-comedy oddity. The hosts discuss how House II throws logic out the window in favor of pure '80s weirdness—and why that might just work.
Don't– go in the house! Don't– watch House II: The Second Story! Don't– listen to this podcast!
January 3-9, 1998 After 10 years Ken welcomes return guest, and certified Hunk, author of the book "Have I Seen You in Anything?", Matt Knudesen. This week we are talking about "House II: The Second Story". This sequel gave us a smokey eyed Lar Park Lincoln, a dog a pillar creature, Gramps with some epic one-liners, the plotholes, somehow dinosaurs, and more. Watch the unedited review at sequelsonly.com/House2 The next sequel we are discussing is "Rambo 3." For It, I chatted with SFX Makeup Artist Jeff Goodwin. Jeff talked about going to the drive-in a lot as a young kid, Planet of The Apes, working with David Lynch, an epic Stallone story, the future of the business, and lots more. The next sequel we will be discussing is "House II: The Second Story". For it, I chatted with Set Decorator Don Diers. Don has worn many hats throughout his career as a Production Assistant, Art Department, and Art Director, but this career was meant to be from a young age. We talked about building haunted houses with his brother, UCLA, Improv, Bio-Dome, The Muppets, how it's set decorator and not set director (link to them below), and lots more. Don was kind enough to send me a hat and even a petty cash envelope from a studio. Great chat! Watch the unedited video interview at sequelsonly.com/DonDiers Set Decorators Society of America https://www.setdecorators.org/ Don's IMDb https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0226133/ Your homework is to watch "House II" for free on Tubi. “Like a kids' movie for adults,” Susan Tomorrow describes the joyful anarchy of "House II: The Second Story." For her Superior Sequel, the Clinton Street Theater programmer and co-owner nominates this 1987 horror-comedy where any dimension, genre, or plot U-turn is possible in the next room over. Zombie grandpas, crystal skulls, pterodactyls, Bill Maher—there truly is no telling where this one will go.
Classics Week II #5 | From BCC: The Other Side - Grab your crystal skulls and cuddle up with your Dogapillar - Michael, Bryce and Riley watched 1987's truly bonkers "haunted house" "horror" "sequel" House II: The Second Story starring a nostalgic zombie prospector and a baby pterodactyl. School is in session, maniacs! To celebrate our six year anniversary episode, we decided to break format a little and cover a fun comedy from 1987: the Carl Reiner directed romp Summer School. This movie boasts an impressive cast, including Dean Cameron who we interview at the end of the episode! Tune in as we break down the flick and discuss other topics such as lies about celebrity deaths, the brilliance of the movie's script, and the classic 80s trope of having actors pushing 30 play high schoolers. Drop that Caramello and check out our Patreon! For August's bonus episode, which we're calling the Back In The Day Blitz, Lance prompts the table with some questions relating to our childhoods. For as little as $2 a month you can get in on the action as well with bonus episodes, Discord privileges, livestreams, exclusive merchandise and more! Want to hear us break down more comedies? Check out our previous episodes on Return Of The Living Dead (episode 81), Better Off Dead (episode 100), House II: The Second Story (episode 111), Blood Diner (episode 128), Return Of The Killer Tomatoes (episode 158), Vampire's Kiss (episode 167), The Burbs (episode 200), and Army Of Darkness (episode 240).
What makes a sequel a sequel? Usually, it continues the story of the previous film, includes connecting characters, or exists in the same cinematic universe. Not all sequels follow these rules. Sometimes they're sequels by title only. We're talking sequels that aren't really sequels with House II: The Second Story, Slumber Party Massacre 2, and 10 Cloverfield Lane. THIS WEEK: House (1985), House II: The Second Story (1987), House III: The Horror Show (1989), House IV (1992)You might remember House as the dusty VHS tape at your local video store with the creepy finger ringing a doorbell. Maybe you remember House II because of the brilliant subtitle, THE SECOND STORY. Perhaps you caught House III on TV years ago because you spent a solid 20 minutes believing it was Wes Craven's Shocker. And you absolutely don't remember House IV so don't try to act like you do. Well, cut my hand off and call me Gramps! We got books of the dead and crystal skulls as we follow Keith Carey (Mean Boys, This is Not a Show) deep into a duo of disturbing domiciles decked with doors to demonic dimensions. It's a double feature of the two Class of '87 films from the La Casa series when Keith chooses Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, and Andy assigns House II: The Second Story.
In this episode, Kyle and I review House II: The Second Story -- quite possibly the Greatest Movie EVER?
This is an odd one. House II: The Second Story, released August 28th in 1987, is a horror-comedy about a crystal skull that's the key to immortality or something. Our main characters have to travel through time and space to keep it safe. MelissaMayPlays is back to try and help us unravel this mess of a movie. “Ding dong, you're dead” Our friends, Movie Dumpster, Joe, Sean, and Connor, join us to review House! No, not the Nobuhiko Obayashi film of the same name from 1977. No, not the Hugh Laurie show. We are talking about House from 1985, that spawned a (kinda) four part franchise. First, there is House. It's gnarly, we talk about it. Then there is House II: The Second Story, which Jake will be reviewing with Movie Dumpster on their show later this week. Next is House III: The Horror Show, that deviates so significantly from the source material, it is often known simply as "The Horror Show." Lastly, but not leastly, there is House IV: Repossession, bringing the dwelling puns back in a big way. If you would like to have our shows continue this collaboration to finish off this series, please do not hesitate to let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com and moviedumpsterpodcast@gmail.com. Directed by Steve Miner (Friday the 13th Part II and III), the film centers around Roger Cobb. Cobb is played by William Kat (The Greatest American Hero). Cobb is estranged from his wife after the disappearance of their son, and seeks refuge in his childhood come after it is left to him by his aunt after her suicide. He is accompanied on this journey by Harold Gorton, played by George Wendt (Cheers). Miner is not the only Friday the 13th alumni involved in this film. House was produced by Sean S. Cunningham, without whom there is no Crystal Lake killer. Also, Harry Manfredini provides the musical score. The film was originally conceived as a horror anthology by Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad). Then, Ethan Wiley wrote the script. Wiley's influence was so prolothic on the film that he actually returned to direct the time-traveling sequel. This week's "Hidden Track" is Out of the Shadows by Fuming Mouth. Chris & Kelsey check out two follow-ups to films we've enjoyed on the show already! The Classic Film: House II: The Second Story (1987) "The new owner of a sinister house gets involved with reanimated corpses and demons searching for an ancient Aztec skull with magic powers” (IMDb.com). The first House movie was an unexpected treat for us, but it seems like The Second Story, with its nonsense “and then” plot and shallow child-pandering, has no idea what made the original actually good. The Modern Film: The Conjuring 2 (2016) "Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising 4 children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit” (IMDb.com). In the past, we’ve been vocal supporters of Wan’s Insidious (1 & 2) and Conjuring movies, but is there a point where assuming success poisons what is otherwise a quality flick? If you couldn’t guess from the title, that’s right, the main focus of this episode is western themed horror. Let me start off by saying that Michael J was very surprised that this is actually a subgenre, considering the only horror western he knows of is House II: The Second Story. Obviously, there are many more films discussed, that involve such sensitive material as “ghost rape” and more. Before all that, though, we get into a lot of different topics ranging from a drunken Donald Pleasence in Halloween to Pet Sematary.
