In this week's 141 Report, Brother Lehive brings the viewers to Houston, Texas, to meet up with the Local 811 Grievance Committee. The Committee includes Carlos Ayala, Bruno Pereira, and Chairman Gary Welch. Welch is also a District 141 Vice President (At-Large). Carlos Ayala told viewers, "I started in the airline industry back in 2006. And have come up as a shop steward. And then eventually as a grievance committee person, here in Houston for local 811 under District 141." Bruno Pereira told Dave, "I've been in the airline industry with United/Continental since 1999. I started as a shop steward, and now I'm a grievance committeeman." Brother Gary Welch was asked about the Houston membership, which includes roughly 2500 people at IAH. The local is large, he said. "Having SM Cargo in our local and recently, had American Airlines Fleet Service join the Lodge. The UA GC here also oversees the moving team as well as stores in Houston." Brother Carlos agreed that the union workloads and responsibilities at 811 are significant, saying, "as the grievance Grievance Committee/ Secretary, I support the shop stewards and the committee with grievances." "I'm technically the bookkeeper," he said. "We don't let titles define all the work that needs to be done." Carlos discussed the abundance of office space that Local 811 has access to. "We are blessed to have basically two offices, one inside the airport, But we also have an office here at the local Lodge." Local 811 has an on-site office at the airport that allows easy access to members while they're on the clock. It also has a suite off-site, which is home to Local 811 and its sister Local 2198. Brother Bruno said of the work, "we all take a hands-on approach when it comes down to working with our stewards. We're very involved with them." Bruno went on to talk about how they manage monthly steward meetings at the local Lodge. He also spoke about the 65 volunteer shop stewards and the critical work they perform for the Houston membership. Brother Carlos talked about using modern communication stating they use live zooms. Along with WhatsApp groups along with several specialized Facebook pages. Carlos talked about walking the property and said the quickest and most secure way to communicate was via text, phone calls, and facetime. The Committee uses its Local website and bulletin boards to ensure all current updates and contact lists for shop stewards are available to the membership. Dave asked Brother Gary about how the lives have changed for IAH members over the last ten years. Gary replied, "I always remember when we were non-Union and the company just came in and took money from us, they took our wages from us." Gary reminded viewers how United tried to involuntarily furlough full-time agents to part-time in 2020 and how fiercely the IAM defended the membership. "And if you look back to this year, when the company was thinking about putting all the full timers down to part time and taking money from us. That right there showed it." "So the union has done a tremendous job helping the overall lives of the Houston people." In closing, the Committee thanks the Local Eboard and shop stewards for all the help and support.
When a wide eyed yet novice university graduate released her 2014 debut album “Live Through Me,” she embarked on a journey to develop a new sound and style in the Hip-Hop genre. Her self-produced tracks were filled with patience and experimenting with the unexpected in terms of both sound and flow. Grinding and regrinding since that ambitious debut lead now Houston based rapper MJ to release multiple singles leading to her comeback EP, "The Way Things Were" in November of last year. Now in 2021, she is determined to be the next star in the rap game.Born in Redondo Beach, CA and raised primarily in Pensacola, FL means that MJ does not abide by those tempted to box in her talents. MJ grew up on the sounds of old school singers such as Luther Vandross and hard hitting Southern rap that ranged from Outkast to Cash Money records. She is developing her own vibe with the assistance of the soulful yet hard hitting Houston, TX music scene. After moving to the home of the Rockets in 2015, she followed up her debut with a hard hitting mixtape entitled “MEEZUS”. Both works can be listened to on her SoundCloud. The mixtape is a more cohesive effort expanding on both the social and personal turmoil MJ experiences in her lifetime.Collaborating with producer Rob the Matrix has allowed her to grow her own flow on her own terms for her 2020 singles entitled “Falling”, "Houston Strong," and "Coming For That Spot". "Falling" hooks you on a hypnotic trance with confidence over a Caribbean infused beat. While "Houston Strong" and "Coming For That Spot" are lit and hard hitting for the city. The singles lead to her EP "The Way Things Were" which has eight tracks dealing with social activism, feeling good, and more. The EP has garnered a considerable amount of attention especially in the Houston area.In May 2021, she released “Moonlight”. The track is a smooth mix of Hip-Hop and R&B. Through heavy playlisting and organic promotion the single has garnered over 2000 streams combined on all platforms. Currently she is gearing up to release her next song “Not Girl Summer,” accompanied by her debut music video. She is a rapper determined to leave her mark on the music industry. https://linktr.ee/mjmtherapperfacebook.com/mjmtherapperinstagram.com/mjmtherappertwitter.com/mjmtherapper

Aisha Ussery is the creator and director of Music Doing Good in Schools. She has a Masters of Education and is also a playwright. She brings these skills to schools around Houston to teach students like Curslynn Thomson and Monserrat Meza. Not yet teenagers, they both exhibit a lot of maturity, a great sense of humor and are living proof of the pacifying, civilizing influence of art classes on students. The classes offer students the opportunity to learn how to take criticism, offer constructive criticism and all of this is of course an opportunity to know people better, understand them more broadly and get along. This summer, Curslynn and Monserrat are training to be mentors for Music Doing Good. For everything you need to know about the Org, click here: www.MusicDoingGood.org
Dr. Robert Sanborn is the president & CEO of Children at Risk. We discuss the interactive map they have created to show Houstonians how common illegal brothels posing as massage parlors are and how close they are to their homes and children's schools. They exist mostly in affluent neighborhoods like River Oaks and The Village and downtown and they are trafficking women and children into the sex trade. We discuss the Houston Police Department's efforts to prosecute the buyers – the men creating the demand – and treating the prostitutes like victims, which is almost always what they truly are. These businesses enslaved them. We also discuss what can be done by ordinary citizens and calling your city councilmen and state representatives is the way to go. It is how we can muster the political will to stop this scourge. Get involved by visiting Children At Risk's informative website: www.childrenatrisk.org

Harvey obviously authored a spike in homelessness which means this is a great time to volunteer for the Org or donate to its programs: www.HomelessHouston.org & The Way Home: www.ThewayHomeHouston.org

(Photo courtesy of Houston Maker Faire, and used with permission.) "Houston Strong" is the theme of this year's Houston Maker Faire. But that's a lot more than just a theme. In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Houston makers have already been using their skills and imagination to help rebuild communities. And Maker Faire Houston, happening this Saturday and Sunday, October 21st and 22nd, is going to challenge them. As Maker Faire Houston celebrates its fifth anniversary, David Brunet and Andrew Lynch, two of its three co-founders , discussed the ways they've reached out to local makers. For 2017 especially, Maker Faire Houston has asked to showcase their ideas, even beyond what they've done in the past. (Photo courtesy of Maker Faire Houston, and used with permission.) The result: some exciting keynotes, new educational sessions geared towards teachers, startups, a pitch competition, and lots of fun. And they're having Houston's first-ever David and Andrew are the President and Vice-President, respectively, of nonprofit Innovation Spark. In addition to producing Maker Faire Houston as its flagship event, Innovation Spark is dedicated to advancing STEM education in the Houston area. Innovation Spark furthers that mission with additional events throughout the year, including Comic Palooza and mini maker faires at local schools. Andrew and David talked about their Maker Faire experiences, the creation of Maker Faire, five years ago, and what 2017 Maker Faire Houston visitors can experience, as makers go "Houston Strong". On this edition of Over Coffee® you'll hear: The surprise David received at his first Maker Faire, in San Mateo; How David, Andrew and fellow co-founder Mike Kinkel came to create Houston's Maker Faire; "Don't miss" features at Houston's Maker Faire 2017; What's going to be going on at Houston Maker Faire's first "Raspberry Jam" session, with Raspberry Pi; What attendees can look forward to, for keynote presentations; How the Houston Maker Faire is working to inspire and rebuild Houston after Hurricane Harvey; What will be available, in the areas of educational workshops for teachers; How a high-school activity sparked Andrew's passion for robotics; What First Robotics will be offering for students; A preview of the 3D printing and virtual reality activities onsite; What arts and crafts opportunities will be available to younger attendees; How the Houston Maker Faire has led to some startups' success
