Meet Bassey: Bassey Ikpi is a versatile creative force known as a writer, author, ex-poet, performer, speaker, burpee abolitionist, and mental wellness advocate. She first made her mark on the classic 90s show BET's Teen Summit and gained recognition as a renowned poet on HBO's Def Poetry Jam. Her global tour with the Tony Award-winning Broadway show came to a pause with a bipolar II diagnosis, leading her to pivot towards mental wellness advocacy in her writing. Bassey now openly shares her journey living with a chronic mental illness, inspiring others to navigate life beyond diagnosis. Her story is vividly captured in the Instant New York Times Bestselling debut book, “I'm Telling The Truth, but I'm Lying” (Harper Perennial, 2019). Despite embracing roles like an underachieving overachiever and semi-pro procrastinator, Bassey is diligently working on various creative projects, including her upcoming second book. About the book: In I'm Telling the Truth, but I'm Lying Bassey Ikpi explores her life—as a Nigerian-American immigrant, a black woman, a slam poet, a mother, a daughter, an artist—through the lens of her mental health and diagnosis of bipolar II and anxiety. Her remarkable memoir in essays implodes our preconceptions of the mind and normalcy as Bassey bares her own truths and lies for us all to behold with radical honesty and brutal intimacy. This is part 2 of my interview with HanSoul. In this segment he talks about his upcoming film Jesus Saves! and many other things about the changes in his life after accepting Christ. It was the early 2000s, before 2007, and I was traveling through North Carolina listening to the radio, trying to find a Christian station to listen to, and to my surprise I happened upon a station that was playing Christian Hip Hop. While listening to this radio station mix there was a song that came on that was by an artist named Han Soul. I cannot remember the actual song I heard, but I knew as soon as I heard it that I wanted to hear more of his music. Years went by and the internet finally came to a place where I could find Artists for whom I may have searched for years, and finally I came across Han Soul just after his name came across my mind, in my spirit. I found him on Instagram and I was really excited about connecting with him and to hear his story. HanSoul (“Hans”) is a disciple, servant, and son of Jesus Christ. The Philadelphia native hit the scene in 1991, with the hit song Imagination that went to the top 10 on Billboard's rap charts (1991). Hans was the second rap artist signed to Epic/Sony records in 1991. He also completed an album with Loud/RCA records in 1993. It appeared Hans was living the American Dream with appearances and performances on BET's Teen Summit, Rap City, Arsenio Hall, The Party Machine and videos that were in rotation on BET and MTV Europe & extensive touring with many of hip hop's heavyweights of that era. Though Hans experienced massive amounts of exposure and success, it was not enough to put an end to the insatiable pain, depression, drug-usage and confusion. In the year of 1995, during his darkest days he pleaded with the Lord Jesus Christ to give him a new life. Christ answered his prayer by compelling him to completely surrender himself and rededicate his life to Him. In this new life in Christ, Hans is now living his life behind enemy lines proclaiming the gospel and bringing others to salvation. Since “switching lanes” Hans has released 6 very successful Christian hip-hop albums and numerous music videos that have received heavy rotation. He, along with DJ Official (Lecrae's former DJ), formed a major radio show on Radio One Philadelphia. Hans' ministry has been featured locally and nationally with interviews on TBN's Praise The Lord, CBN's 700 Club, NBC 10, Fox Philadelphia and ABC's Visions. Hans has toured with numerous notable Christian & Secular artists. Hans is an ordained minister and serves as Director of Youth & Young Adults for the Tri-State area for the Church of God, Anderson Indiana. Hans has directed, produced and edited a feature film entitled Jesus Saves! about his testimony. He holds a Master's of Divinity from Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University and is finishing up a Master's of Education from Eastern University. Hans resides in Philadelphia with his lovely wife Melanie. #HanSoul #PneuPneumaGodcast #NormanBrown #SoldOut #Rapper #Jesus #Cristiano #Dios #Bible #God #WordLifeRadio #prayer #Christian #podcast #KevinSamuels To book Norman for events, conferences, interviews and more email: pneu.pneuma.podcast@gmail.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pneu-pneuma/support

Tsilala Brock is letting life thrill her, though she originally had trouble with coming to terms with her multi-hyphenate identity. Her journey was calling upon skills and proficiencies that she didn't necessarily study in college. Why do we feel guilt when moving away from our past? Yet Tsilala would experience her multi-hyphenate mindset and would help her on the national tour of Book of Mormon, as she was both a dance captain and swing. But how would her experience with Book of Mormon help Tsilala become a fully flushed out and inspired multi-hyphenate? In this episode, we discuss the importance of discipline, rest, and listening to our bodies. Tsilala has become a consummate multi-hyphenate and lives by the guideline of “the life that you want is on the other side of discipline.” While Tsilala is producing a podcast, and writing JuneBug the Musical - she often has to pay attention to health, exhaustion, and mental capacity. Thankfully, she has found small ways we all can implement rest into our daily practices - even if they don't seem like restful actions. What do you do for yourself? How do you implement rest into your life? Just as much as it's important to be active in your artform, it's just as important to rest - especially in these overstimulation times. Tune in to this extremely powerful and inspirational episode that will get you invigorated to implement rest into your daily practice. Tsilala recently completed a two year position as Assistant Dance Captain/Swing with The Book of Mormon 2nd National Tour. Currently she's producing and co hosting a new podcast called 'UNCK! Getting comfortable with uncomfortable conversations' which was recently awarded a grant from the Adobe Community Residency Fund. Welcome Back, Family! This week we introduce or re-introduce everyone to a new family member who we hope will be coming around the Brownstone a lot in the future. Some of our more seasoned family members may recognize this week’s guest from BET’s Teen Summit. Or you may have read his work in numerous media outlets around the country. Kenji Jasper has stopped by the stoop this week to have one of the better conversation that we’ve had in awhile. We touched on topics ranging from his start in the business, growing up in the DC area in the 80s and 90s, the effect of gentrification in our communities, Jay-Z or NAS, his new book, and so much more. Make your self a drink and sit down and enjoy this one. It’s going to be good! As always check out viewfromthestoop.com for more great content and to let us know what you think. You can also find us on instagram @brownstonemg and on facebook. That’s enough about us. Let’s get this one started!
A throwback from the summer of 2014! In this episode of Ride Your Ride I rode out with some upstanding youths from during the 3 Day Teen Empowerment Summit. The event was orchestrated to help motivate and inspire teens from around the 757. Listen in to what some the teens of Hampton Roads had to say about there experience and what the summit means to them.
Dr. Melanie Johnson is the President and CEO for The Health Museum. Her PhD in education so I get to geek out about the awesome exhibits they've built which are all interactive teaching experiences. Think fun like Disneyland but all about biology and science. They are offering summer camps and they have the Teen Summit coming in July. This program allows teens to spend time in the medical center, learning from the best in the world. It's a unique partnership the Health Museum has with our medical community.Go to www.thehealthmuseum.org for information and their schedule for exhibits, mindfulness classes for adults, mixers for young professionals and their movies, too.

Armond & Doc return to talk about the 2017 XXL Freshman cover and recap the NBA Finals. Where does Cleveland go from here? Was the NBA weaker in the mid/late 90s? Is Lavar Ball a liability for his son? Will Armond succeed in creating Teen Summit 2.0 (only half-joking)?
This episode two is much better than Attack of the Clones. The crew hops in the DeLorean, sets the dial to 1996, and burns rubber. We review what our three favorite albums released that year were at the time and then we discuss what our top three 1996 albums are now, 20 years of grown-man living later. This episode features shocking revelations about Nate’s conception of time during the mid-90s, sacrilegious talk from Eric about his ranking of the Reasonable Doubt album, downright blasphemy from Everett about early Outkast, and against his will, Eric is forced to reminisce about his days on Teen Summit. All in all, a great show...for me to poop on.

As the first anniversary of President Barack Obama and the First Family's historic sojourn to the Republic of Ghana approaches (July 10-11, 2009), the occasion will be marked by the release of an equally historic documentary: Obama in Ghana: The Untold Story. Produced, written and directed by Tony Regusters, a veteran, Washington, DC-based TV news producer, the film captures the special events and celebrations connected with the first-ever visit by America's first-ever Black President to a nation in Sub-Saharan West Africa. Tony is a native of Philadelphia, PA, where he made his first entre into communications working in the advertising department of the Philadelphia Inquirer. He went on to sell advertising for Philadelphia radio stations WWDB-FM and WWDB-FM, and then, at age 23, became the publisher of The Third World Journal newspaper. With those experiences under his belt, Tony was invited to join the advertising staff of a newly created Essence magazine, where he became one of the magazine's top account executives. Five years later he successfully transitioned from advertising to the editorial side of media - which led him into an award-winning career as a TV news producer. Tony has been a producer for CNN & CNN International, and held similar positions at Fox News/Washington (where he was the White House producer for Brian Williams, now anchor of NBC Nightly News). Tony was also a press secretary for Rep. Maxine Waters – and is the originating producer of BET's award-winning Teen Summit program. Tony's latest project is Obama in Ghana: The Untold Story - a feature-length documentary film that is commanding considerable attention here in the US, in Africa, and around the world.
