A successful mindset can help you achieve more. Guest expert Erin Jewell Gerst shares the effects of stress, our subconscious, and mindfulness. Hear insights about: Why Erin's coaching is focused on sharing a message that inspires, empowers and uplifts other women in business Why Erin chose to focus on working with women leaders and the general challenges they face in their careers How Erin's speaking work in the past year has focused on cultural diversity, and why she has a passion for mindfulness and mindset work Why the unprecedented real estate market is causing many professionals to question themselves, and what advice Erin would share with anyone who feels out of alignment Why high-performing achievers often overlook the importance of stress management, and why our biology needs a restful period outside the fight-or-flight response How our “good stress events” often slip into negative stress because we aren't allowing ourselves healthy pauses to rest and reset Why the very different lessons boys and girls are taught in childhood can often hold us back from success in adulthood Why asking for help can be so difficult for entrepreneurs, and why “putting your hand up” even when it feels awkward is important A Successful Mindset I know you've heard me talk about the importance of mindset many times before… and that's because it really does make a huge difference in how much you can achieve! A successful mindset can empower you to more easily reach your goals, minimize stress in your life, and overcome your own fears and limiting beliefs. In this week's episode of Pursuing Freedom, I'm joined by my friend Erin Jewell Gerst. Erin is anExecutive Mindset and Growth Coach, an International Speaker and a Professor of Leadership at Villanova University. She was named a Top 10 Coach of 2021 by Thrive Global for her extraordinary work, and her clients are primarily women in leadership in many different fields. During our conversation, Erin shares how being “always on” and not giving yourself time to rest and release your stress can have a cascading effect on your life and the quality of your work… and it can even turn positive stressors (exciting news and changes) into negative ones. However, if you do the work to master the successful mindset, you can reduce your stress and achieve more with less effort and headache. A Successful Mindset Needs a Stress-Relief Valve As Erin explained during our conversation, humans evolved a fight-or-flight response for a reason: it's supposed to help us out in big, dangerous situations. However, in our modern lives we don't have to fight sabertooth tigers or run from predators, and many of us have become stuck in that “always on” fight-or-flight mode. The problem is, we need periods of rest and calm to “reset” our responses to stressful situations. Our systems were designed to give us a temporary burst of adrenaline but weren't designed to live in a constant state of go-go-go. Never taking a break from the stress and pressure has all kinds of negative effects on our sleep, our physical and hormonal health, and on our mindset. It's important to take a period step back and let our systems reset to a calm state to achieve a truly successful mindset! Unlearning Early Lessons One of the other big points Erin brought up in our discussion is how, from a very early age, boys and girls are taught to handle things differently. Little girls are often given the message that “you're such a great helper” while boys are taught “you can push harder and get better”. These lessons often chase us into adulthood, where women are left to feel that they must always be good at everything and they're less likely to apply for jobs they believe themselves to be underqualified for. Meanwhile, men have internalized the message that “I can figure this out as I go”. The worst part is, both groups are left with this nagging doubt and a resistance to asking for help for fear of seeming incompetent! But there should never be any shame associated with asking for help when you need it! Let's face it, we're always going to be our own worst critics. Learning to ask for help even when it feels uncomfortable to do so is so important. Recognizing your own limits and owning your strengths AND your weaknesses isn't “admitting failure”, it's showing that you're self-aware. And that empowerment can truly unlock a successful mindset that will help you achieve your goals! Setting priorities at work can help you maximize your energy, productivity and impact…if you set the RIGHT priorities and measure your progress. Hear insights about: Why decision-making is an energy drain that also wears away at our enthusiasm, and how Erin has created a planner tool to help in setting priorities at work How to get Erin's Set For Success Planner and how it can help you avoid decision-making energy drain when setting priorities at work and in your life Why doing what you “should” do or prioritizing based on what works for others isn't always the right choice, and why focusing on adding value is a better focus How Erin is developing a full Pursuing Freedom planner that will offer lots of tools to help you get clarity, reflect on your priorities, and help you achieve your goals How overcoming your limiting beliefs and self-doubts and energizing yourself can help you achieve your “big crazy goals” Why tracking your results will help you recognize your progress and celebrate your achievements Why you shouldn't be afraid to connect with the things that bring you joy, and how following your passions attracts business and success Why we all must choose where we want to go and the goals we want to accomplish, and then push ourselves to pursue the freedom those goals offer Setting Priorities At Work Most of us have a million different things fighting for our attention and for scraps of our very limited time. It can be really difficult to sort through our list of priorities and figure out where we can best spend our time to achieve real progress toward the goals we've set for ourselves. In this week's episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, I want to talk to you about the importance of measuring your progress and about how doing so can help you identify where to spend your time most effectively. Setting priorities at work isn't enough… they have to be the right priorities backed by the right energy. Otherwise, you're just stumbling around in the dark and hoping you're doing something right. Planning ahead is so important. Every day when you get out of bed, you're faced with the choice of what to do with your time. That decision-making process can be a huge drain on your energy and your enthusiasm! That's why it's so important to look back on your progress and look ahead to your goals to keep yourself motivated and passionate. Measuring Your Progress Matters In many areas of our lives, measuring and tracking our progress comes naturally. For example, let's say you've decided you want to lose weight. You wouldn't try to do that without periodically checking your scale, because you need to know where you started and where you are now so that you can adjust your strategies to keep moving forward. The same thing happens in our work; we can't get to where we want to go if we don't measure our progress! Not only does this help give us a motivation boost and an opportunity to celebrate our wins, it also helps us get clarity so that when we're setting priorities at work, we're focusing on the right things that will really make a difference. In this week's episode of the podcast, I discuss a helpful tool I've created that my own team uses to keep us motivated, inspired and moving forward! The Set For Success Planner tool is something I'm delighted to share with you on my website in the resources section, and it really has made a huge difference for how my team and I tackle our week. While you're there, check out all the other awesome tools and resources we've made available! I'm also extremely excited to announce that I'm in the process of creating a Pursuing Freedom planner, which will have daily habits, activities and tools to help you get clear on what truly excites and motivates you and what to focus on to make a massive impact on your business while helping you add value to the people around you! I'm so eager to share this with you, and I'll have more info about the Pursuing Freedom planner and how you can get one soon! Remember: you can't create something that you can't measure. Getting clear about where you were, where you are, and where you want to go is a crucial part of the journey! In today’s world, trying to get married has become... a hot mess. So, to all the COVID brides to have been, grooms and wedding professionals: you’re not alone. Welcome to Bride To Have Been, a StudioPod original podcast hosted by Emily Lewis, with the purpose of building a community by sharing the reality of this new normal in the wedding industry. Let’s keep inspiring each other and celebrate the thing we treasure the most: love. The house can wait and the business stuff can be figured out later, but the memories? That’s what bride Erin and her fiance Kory decided was most important to them. When Erin sat down with host Emily Lewis to trade wedding stories, she said she had to do a lot of soul searching to figure out what she really wanted, and in the end, it was the big wedding with a large guest list. So the couple decided to push their wedding date back a fourth and final time to August 2022, three and a half years after the couple got engaged and two years after their original wedding date, to a time when they hope gathering and celebrating in large groups will feel safe again.  Jump straight into: (07:41) - Erin and Kory’s proposal story - “So we walk over to the Palace of Fine Arts and as we walk in, I'm hearing music, like a string quartet playing, and I start kind of singing along. I'm like, ‘Oh, I know this song.’” (11:48) - On finding a venue early on - “I actually only really looked at one venue, the Bel-Air Bay Club, in the Palisades, and I just fell in love with it.” (12:52) - How Erin reacted to shelter-in place orders due to COVID - “I'm like, ‘Oh God, Oh God, this is not good. I need a backup plan.’” (15:29) - Moving their wedding date back a second time - “I started to go through this process again, reach out to the venue, find out if there are any backup dates, and then at that time they didn't have anything for the rest of 2021.” (21:49) - Deciding to wait another year to have her dream wedding - “I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion or what, maybe it's not practical and maybe it's just like indulgent. I don't know, but it's what I want.” (24:10) - On having to find new vendors for their 4th wedding date - “I need to do a new hair and makeup trial anyway, because I'll be a whole different person three years later. Probably need a lot more help by then.” (25:18) - Being resilient after moving her wedding four times - “I really hardly cried about it. I was just very matter of fact, like, this is what it is. This is what we do.” (32:22) - Trying to brighten other COVID couple’s day - “So what I'm doing in my area is offering any COVID brides and grooms discounts on Invisalign, whitening, braces, whatever they want to get them ready for the wedding.” Resources Follow https://www.instagram.com/drwalkerortho/ (Erin) on Instagram  Book dental treatments with https://www.walker-orthodontics.com/ (Walker Orthodontics)  Book the https://www.belairbayclub.com/ (Bel-Air Bay Club) in Pacific Palisades https://open.spotify.com/episode/5lCCD4Vkl3Esk3bMdmWomZ?si=cYspvouNQhGx2OmDG8J0Yw (Listen) to Emily’s interview with Wedding Planner Jane Gerwin Book a wedding package at https://janealexandraevents.com/ (JaneAlexandra Events) Thanks for listening! #141 Embrace the Pause: Self Reflection and Goal Setting, with Erin Bradley

Pursuing Freedom

In this episode, I share tips and strategies for taking regular time out for self reflection and goal setting, and I explain why it’s so important to do. Hear insights about: Why it is important to regularly take a pause and give yourself space to reflect on where you are, and what is and isn’t in alignment with your goals Why our brains often look for distractions to occupy us because “the absence of stimuli causes discomfort” Why we should “embrace the pause” and take time out for self reflection and goal setting instead of allowing our mind to look for distractions Why Erin chose to go 100% commission and set her own time and schedule, and why at first she struggled with forcing herself to be “always on” How Erin found clarity to focus less on who she wanted to become and focus more on “unbecoming” and fighting the impulse to multitask Why learning to be fully present in each and every moment is a process that takes time and intentionality Why “busyness” doesn’t necessarily equal “more business”, and why taking the time to pause for self reflection and goal setting of less work-related goals is vital Why you should ask yourself if your current reality is aligned with your long-term goals, and why you are the only one who can take control of your life and mindset Why the actions we take reflect our “real priorities” rather than the things we tell ourselves are our priorities What steps you can take to learn to embrace the pause, refresh yourself, and unlock your true creativity Embrace the Pause: Self Reflection and Goal Setting When you find yourself with some time to kill, what is the first thing you do? If you’re like many of us, you reach for your phone or check your emails and messages. It’s a habit that almost all of us are familiar with. But why do we do it? I recently listened to a 10-minute guided meditation on the Calm app, and the host, Tamara Levitt, said something really profound that stuck with me. “The absence of stimuli causes discomfort.” Let’s unpack that. We’ve all trained our brains to constantly seek stimulation. We fall into the habit of obsessively checking our emails, scrolling social media… anything to fill the gaps in our day. And yet, it’s those very gaps, the quiet moments, where we can recharge, reflect, and tap into our true creative potential. Instead of always filling our time with mindless stimulation, I suggest instead that you “embrace the pause”. Turn those moments into something fulfilling, truly productive, and meaningful. Self Reflection and Goal Setting The next time you find yourself trying to fill time with stimuli, use that moment instead to reflect on where you are in life right now. Be in this moment. Are you where you want to be right now? Are all the parts of your life in alignment with your goals? Are those goals still applicable to you or do you need to update them? Are the actions you are taking a reflection of the things you prioritize? Taking the time for self reflection and goal setting with your real priorities in mind is such a powerful thing! You can’t get to where you want to be if you don’t know where you are right now, and especially in this chaotic and unprecedented real estate market, you need to take the time to recharge and reflect. The Power of Unbecoming We spend a lot of time focusing on where we want to be in the future, but we seldom stop to consider where we are right at this moment. But a big part of growth isn’t just moving forward toward something, it’s also about “unbecoming”…recognizing the habits and mindset you have now that isn’t helping you move forward. Imagine you’re in a boat, and off on the horizon is everything you want from your life. You’re paddling and paddling, trying to get closer to your destination. But there are parts of you that may not be aligned and may be paddling in a completely different direction, so instead of making real progress, you’re just floating around in a circle. “Unbecoming” is about getting those parts working together toward the same goal (or pushing them overboard!) And when you take the time for self reflection and goal setting in those quiet moments, you can start making a real difference in how quickly you can get to where you want to be. I hope you enjoy this week’s Pursuing Freedom episode, and that the information I share is helpful in allowing you to give yourself permission to embrace the pause! Could you use a vacation? Mel Miles' life mission is to give stressed out, overworked professionals permission to rewrite the script, create more space in their lives, and find the freedom they've always wanted. In this week's b Cause episode, we flip the script a bit and give you a dose of Soulcation and a dash of authenticity as we replay an interview Erin did on the Soulcation podcast. What better tool than authenticity to help you design a life you don't need a vacation from! RE-posted content from the Soulcation podcast Taking a break from "the way things have always been done"... could be your key to solving overwhelm, anxiety, and burnout.  And blazing your own path could give you the balance and freedom you crave. No one knows that process better than Erin Haztikostas, the latest guest on the Soulcation Podcast. Erin is former corporate CEO turned professional pot-stirrer: in other words, she was successful in traditional circumstances, then took a different path and created her own circumstances. She's now the founder of b Authentic inc, a career coach, TEDx speaker, and nationally published thought leader.   But before all that, she was itching for something new, she'd had great success as a corporate leader - but was craving more. "The epiphany I had is the same I teach time and time again", she said. "As I thought about the career and leadership space, and the reason I wasn't pursuing it was I didn't want to do it like everyone before. What I preach is don't not do something because you hate the way it was done before. You can actually do it your own way." That led to Erin developing her "strategic authenticity" framework - a way for corporate leaders to authentically lea their companies, without falling into the rut of the "way things have always been done," all while creating a healthier, happier work environment for employees. Authenticity is more than just "being yourself" - and Erin talks through her advice for how someone could tap into their own authenticity, and use it to jumpstart their life and career. We don't think of authenticity as anything more than simply being transparent. But it's so much more than that - and it could be your ticket to freedom, burnout recovery, and creating your own path in life. Listen in to hear more about Erin's story from corporate job to blazing her own path, what "strategic authenticity" actually is (and how you can use it in your own life), and how experimentation can help you determine your next move if you're ever feeling stuck. What You Will Learn: 3:35: Erin talks about her background as a CEO, her journey through corporate America, and when and why she started itching for something new. 6:40: The epiphany Erin had after her corporate career and how she teaches that same epiphany to her clients now 8:40: How Erin followed her intuition when leaving her job in the corporate world and what role experimentation played in that process 11:08: Erin explains how she defines the word "authenticity" 17:36: Erin describes how someone can connect with their own authenticity and who they truly are at their core 22:21: What "wall" Erin hits with her work now and how she moves past it 24:58: Erin explains what the "50 percent rule" is and how she applies it in her business 28:26: Erin describes a piece of her backstory that's allowed her the confidence to boldly express her opinions and to be authentic over traditional 31:51: Why Erin thinks the philosophy of "being yourself" isn't enough to truly live authentically 34:12: Erin gives advice for how someone could strategically use authenticity in their lives and their work 40:50 The six pillars of strategic authenticity that Erin writes about in her new book 44:02: The brain science and power being being "unexpected" Follow the soulcation movement @ If you like jammin' with us on the podcast, b sure to join us for more fun and inspiration! With awareness and practice, anyone can surpass these lazy days that drag you down. You must begin by recognizing there are two voices in your head, with one side making you feel lazy and the other motivating you to make the right choices. The outcome is based on which side is stronger. Which voice will you allow to win? Thus, it is vital to look back into your goals to check if all your intentions and actions are in alignment. With this thorough evaluation, you can push yourself to move forward even on the dreariest days wherein you don't want to move an inch.  Show Notes: In today's show, we talk about: How Erin and Sarit are appreciative and grateful for every single share because their mission is to help as many people as they can, which can only happen with a collaborative effort. Why it matters to keep showing up even when the going gets tough, and you don't feel like moving.  What steps can you do when you're feeling lazy, and you don't feel like doing it? Why it is important to be aware that you have two voices in your head so you can address your responsibilities and be accountable for your choices.  How your life is full of granular decisions that need to be in alignment with your goals, otherwise you will continue backsliding and making terrible decisions because you started on the wrong path. Why the momentum you create at the start has a strong impact on where you will go because this allows you to move forward.  How with commitment comes creativity, which allows you to create a different route to get everything done.  Why you need to go back to your goals so you can get clarity and re-prioritize the actions you take in order to accomplish your goals.  How do you promote having your “boss bitch voice” so it becomes louder, which includes setting the right intentions and following up with practice? How you need to get outside your comfort zone and expect resistance when you want to great things in life.  Why you need to give yourself a deadline because a sense of urgency means you will continue to make the right decisions. Wondering how to make money from a sailboat - even if you've never done it before? This podcast will explain how it's possible. Learn how sailing digital nomad, Erin Carey, quit her government job of 17 years to start her first online business – a Public Relations agency for digital nomads and adventure travelers. But, that's not all - she also did it from a sailboat with her husband and three kids!   After having built an online business from scratch with zero previous experience, Erin is here on Badass Digital Nomads to share her unique journey and tips with you.   In this podcast, Erin talks about why she and her husband decided to quit their jobs and learn how to sail. She explains how they came up with their “escape plan” to sail the world full time and how they manage to support themselves while sailing the world with their kids. Throughout the episode, she shares simple, yet tangible and actionable strategies for how you can make money remotely in a way that aligns with your personality and desired lifestyle.    She also shares what it’s like to live on a boat with three boys under the age of 12, how she makes friends in the sailing community, and the challenges and inconveniences that come with boat life.   At the end of the podcast, she shares how she gets her digital nomad clients and discloses the most effective ways to pitch yourself or your business to get featured in media outlets.    Although Erin notes that living on a boat isn’t just about sunbathing and piña coladas (it’s a full-time job!), she explains why the hardships are well worth the sacrifice.   Kristin and Erin also contemplate why an easy life is not necessarily a better life. They weigh the pros and cons that come with taking the path of least resistance in modern day society versus pursuing a life of adventure and experiences that result in stories to last a lifetime.   TOPICS DISCUSSED/WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: The documentary that inspired Erin and her husband to learn to sail and move onto a boat with their three kids. Strategies for learning how to make money online with zero experience. How to work up the courage to quit your day job and why it’s okay to go back to it if you need to save money and try again. How Erin and her husband had to hustle for money after being robbed in Bali. The exhaustion of boat life and the temptation of staying on land for the comfort and ease. What it’s like to be part of the sailing and digital nomad communities. The power of manifestation, synchronicities, and focusing on your intentions. Erin’s favorite travel destinations and what’s on her itinerary for 2021. Tips for pitching yourself to media outlets. How to get 50% off your first month of PR services from Roam Generation!   QUESTIONS ANSWERED: How did you transition from working in the corporate world to living on a boat and working remotely? How did you learn to sail? How do you meet people while sailing?  What kind of boat do you have and why did you choose it? Where have you sailed and which destinations are you sailing to next?  What tools do you use to run your online business? How do you receive payments online from clients? It's time to get up close and personal with your favorite girls through another no-holds-bar episode. It is Q&A day where the LIVE audience gets to ask the most delicate questions they need help with. Whether its fitness questions, relationship advice, or financial mentoring, Erin and Sarit give straightforward answers to address these concerns. The primary focus of today' show centers on fitness, with a touch on finances. It's not about learning how to lose weight fast but learning how to get fit for sure and for life. With the right intentions and plans in place, you can get stronger and healthier. When you analyze it, life is not about instant gratification. Both your finances and your body need time.   Show Notes:  In today's episode, we talk about:   Why it is important to figure out what your main goal is because your this your intention determines the prescription or plans of action you need to make.  How consistency matters because your routine has a huge impact on the outcome.  Why your nutrition should always be on point no matter what you do because you cannot outrun a bad diet.  Whether you should build muscles first or shed fats later depending on your body's state.  How Erin dealt with workouts after she got all her tattoos.  What you focus on will determine the quality of your results, and this has nothing to do with how fast you lose the weight.  How to become metabolically efficient so your body will perform consistently well and sustainably for the long-term.  For more information and to keep updated with our content, follow us below! Human beings have done a good job of ripping this planet apart; we have to figure out how to put it back together, and today’s guest is at the forefront of this initiative. Erin Yoshi joins us today to talk about her new project, The Land of WE. In this project, Erin is using art to drive conversations that imagine a different world, one in which we live within our means, and we rethink our exploitative systems that deplete our limited resources. Our conversation with Erin starts by tracing her journey as an artist, zooming in on how she got interested in murals, where her activistic approach found its expression, and how she developed such a strong skill in the business side of the pursuit. From there, we switch gears and focus on our current moment in history, a time defined by the exploits of capitalism which have driven movements to destroy the environment, divide people, and spread feelings of hopelessness. Erin talks about her belief in, and the possibility of, building a post-capitalist world. In this dream society, we keep the benefits of modernity but achieve them in more sustainable ways by ‘remembering forward’ – taking solutions from the past and turning them into our new default systems. This segues into a focus on The Land of WE, and listeners get to hear Erin talk about how she is researching these kinds of older, sustainable cultures and systems, and spreading the word about them through murals, billboards, and educational social media initiatives.   Key Points From This Episode: Introducing muralist Erin Yoshi and her new project fighting climate change, The Land of WE. Erin’s love of podcasts, the types she listens to, and some of her experiences as a guest. Discipline, being a mom, and how Erin has been dealing with the logistics of being an artist. How Erin got her work ethic and skills in the business and creative sides of art. The story of how Erin’s mural career evolved, starting from an erasable board her dad bought her. Being scrappy and how a career in art is a slow journey with no overnight success. The need for artists to enjoy the craziness of the struggle that comes with being an artist. Tough love as a parent and lessons Erin learned from her dad that made her a better artist Themes of the fight for justice and against prejudice; the story of Erin’s family history. Erin’s consideration of herself as an activist and some of her work in this area. How Erin became ED of the Estria Foundation and the environmental activism work they did. The extent that religion impacts humankind’s ability to manage its natural resources. The myth of the political right versus the left: A way of distracting the masses from their similarity. Pros and cons of capitalism and Erin’s belief that a post-capitalist world is coming. ‘Remembering forward’: How Erin applies this principle to advocate for more sustainability. The idea that more sustainable solutions already exist, we just need to incorporate them. The need for governments to support sustainable initiatives so they aren’t so expensive. Localized solutions and the need for systems that allow local leaders. Warnings to be found in bizarre natural disasters that sound like sci-fi but are real. The role of the artist in these times of crisis as storytellers and history keepers. What The Land of WE is doing to use art to celebrate and spread stories about more sustainable practices. How bad modernity is for mental health. The power of art to pierce the soul, making it such a powerful too right now. What the rollout of the first phase of The Land of WE will look like; murals, billboards, and more. Where to find Erin and her project online to learn more and get involved. Erin’s skill for grant writing and her love of sharing this knowledge. For more information and photos, visit here: https://notrealart.com/erin-yoshi

It got a million views overnight.  Erin realized it was a sign that something was missing in the running community. Every running influencer looks a certain way, they run a certain pace, and they post about specific things that aren’t relatable to everyone. Her authenticity and relatability allowed her to create her own niche. After 4 months of posting run videos, she hit 100,000 followers on TikTok. She was skeptical of TikTok from the beginning because it was so new—but it has stolen her heart. Where did the name Mrs.Space.Cadet come from? How did Erin learn to get comfortable on camera? How much time does she spend recording her videos? Keep listening to find out! Get famous on TikTok: The importance of the “For You” page So how do you get famous on TikTok? Erin’s husband, Dan, is always asking her: You’re going to put THAT on TikTok? The answer is always yes. Erin strives to be the exact same person on TikTok that she is in person. It doesn’t matter if she hates her hair, her eyebrows look funny when she talks, or she’s saying something embarrassing or goofy—it’s uniquely her.  Erin points out that every single video you post WILL land on someone’s “For You” page. If someone likes it, it goes to another person. Everyone gets a fair shake. Facebook and Instagram can’t do that. Erin emphasizes: “If you have good lighting, good sound quality, and your 15-second or one-minute video is engaging, and people want to see the end, you are going to take off on TikTok. It’s that easy.” Erin gets contacted frequently by affiliates and ambassador programs. But she only agrees to rep things she can’t live without—like Liquid IV and goodr Sunglasses.
