In Silicon Valley, a lot has been said about not tolerating “brilliant jerks” - people who are high performers, but are also bullies, rude, disrespectful and unprofessional. Companies tout valuing culture over results. But in spite of that, I have had the misfortune of working closely with at least three people who were bullies and created a toxic culture in their teams. After talking to my friends and coworkers, I have realized I am not an exception. Many people have had similar experiences at their workplace and it made them miserable. Some decided to leave rather than put up with the kind of stress that came with being in such a situation. While working through challenges is an important part of professional growth, working with bullies is where I draw the line. When Erin talked about her experience of being pushed to the edge by a difficult, bordering abusive leader, it struck a chord with me. Do not miss this episode where Erin shares her unseen battle, and offers her learnings of how to deal with a toxic leader. Erin Norton is the Director, Technology Planning & Programs for Customer Service Technology at eBay. She is also Chief of Staff for this organization. After teaching public high school for a few years, she transitioned into technology and has never looked back! She has worked for several companies in a wide variety of roles spanning product, legal, operations. She now leads a team of over 70 individuals spanning vendor management, program and technical project management, employee engagement, comms and content management. She is a mother and wife and enjoys travel, outdoor activities and spending time with her family. WE Have Cancer
Grief, Gratitude, and Metastatic Breast Cancer with Actress Erin Cronican

On this episode of WE Have Cancer, Lee is joined by actress and singer Erin Cronican to chat about her experience battling stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, continuing to perform and produce plays with her theater company, and blogging her entire journey since 1998. Erin speaks candidly about the roles of grief and gratitude in her life, and the comfort she finds in her work and daily routine.  Guest Biography: Erin Cronican is an award-winning director, actor, and singer based in New York. She currently serves as Executive Artistic Director at The Seeing Place Theater in New York City. In 2018, she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, and has been undergoing chemotherapy, treatments, and scans ever since. She has been blogging since the 90's and continues to document her life at her self-titled blog, “The Erin Cronicals,” where she provides transparency, awareness, and levity as she navigates her cancer journey. Table of Contents:Do we owe anyone vulnerability? Sometimes vulnerability and openness can be a double-edged sword. When Erin found out she had stage 4 breast cancer, she went through surgery during the midst of production with her theatre company. "I wanted my art to stand on its own." Erin started chemotherapy in March 2019, and was scheduled to open a show in April 2019. She lost 40 pounds in 4 months due to a tumor leaning on her adrenal gland. She says when she started the show, she was not the energetic person people expected her to be. Critics found all kinds of reasons to call her the “weak link” of the show; they had no idea she had breast cancer. Normalize the Daily Struggle  Erin says, in a way, all cancer patients are actors to a certain extent. Everyone puts on a face around family members so they don't worry as much, we downplay our feelings, friends tell us “Oh you look great!”  The Comfort of Routine, Blogging, and Storytelling Erin started blogging back in the 1990's while she was in college. She learned to code websites, and started writing a daily diary on her HTML website. She started her current blog when she moved to NYC in 2005. When she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2015, the blog morphed into being more medically driven. Grief and Gratitude Can Coexist Erin explains on her blog how she can be grieving the life that she used to have, and also be grateful for the life she has now. She wrote that two months before her mother's death; and now she's also dealing with the grief of losing a parent and the collective grief of living through a pandemic. Sometimes in the cancer community there's a toxic positivity aspect; it's okay to make room for grief.  “I'm grateful for my chemotherapy.” When her blood counts are too low and she can't get chemo, Erin admits she's very sad. She considers it to be medicine and nothing toxic. Since she's been so stable recently, she's getting her scans every four months instead of every three. She says the "scanxiety" she feels is more a concern in having to change her regimen and less about worrying if the cancer comes back. “Even good news brings anxiety.” Leaving chemo, stable scans, or going off medications are all great, but they can come with extra worries about whether you're doing the right thing. Erin shares the common fear among cancer patients introducing any change to their regimen: will I pay for this later? Battling Cancer Alongside her Mother Her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer just as Erin was finishing up with radiation treatments from her first bout of cancer. It was completely overwhelming. Her mother was diagnosed as stage 4, but she was on chemo for 11 months. One of her lungs collapsed, and she passed away just before Covid hit in early 2020. How has Covid impacted Erin's work as an actress? Erin says her theater company is "very tenacious," they even created a program called Ripple For Change which pairs them with nonprofit organizations doing social justice work....

In today’s world, trying to get married has become... a hot mess. So, to all the COVID brides to have been, grooms and wedding professionals: you’re not alone. Welcome to Bride To Have Been, a StudioPod original podcast hosted by Emily Lewis, with the purpose of building a community by sharing the reality of this new normal in the wedding industry. Let’s keep inspiring each other and celebrate the thing we treasure the most: love. The house can wait and the business stuff can be figured out later, but the memories? That’s what bride Erin and her fiance Kory decided was most important to them. When Erin sat down with host Emily Lewis to trade wedding stories, she said she had to do a lot of soul searching to figure out what she really wanted, and in the end, it was the big wedding with a large guest list. So the couple decided to push their wedding date back a fourth and final time to August 2022, three and a half years after the couple got engaged and two years after their original wedding date, to a time when they hope gathering and celebrating in large groups will feel safe again.  Jump straight into: (07:41) - Erin and Kory’s proposal story - “So we walk over to the Palace of Fine Arts and as we walk in, I'm hearing music, like a string quartet playing, and I start kind of singing along. I'm like, ‘Oh, I know this song.’” (11:48) - On finding a venue early on - “I actually only really looked at one venue, the Bel-Air Bay Club, in the Palisades, and I just fell in love with it.” (12:52) - How Erin reacted to shelter-in place orders due to COVID - “I'm like, ‘Oh God, Oh God, this is not good. I need a backup plan.’” (15:29) - Moving their wedding date back a second time - “I started to go through this process again, reach out to the venue, find out if there are any backup dates, and then at that time they didn't have anything for the rest of 2021.” (21:49) - Deciding to wait another year to have her dream wedding - “I don't know if it's an unpopular opinion or what, maybe it's not practical and maybe it's just like indulgent. I don't know, but it's what I want.” (24:10) - On having to find new vendors for their 4th wedding date - “I need to do a new hair and makeup trial anyway, because I'll be a whole different person three years later. Probably need a lot more help by then.” (25:18) - Being resilient after moving her wedding four times - “I really hardly cried about it. I was just very matter of fact, like, this is what it is. This is what we do.” (32:22) - Trying to brighten other COVID couple’s day - “So what I'm doing in my area is offering any COVID brides and grooms discounts on Invisalign, whitening, braces, whatever they want to get them ready for the wedding.” Resources Follow https://www.instagram.com/drwalkerortho/ (Erin) on Instagram  Book dental treatments with https://www.walker-orthodontics.com/ (Walker Orthodontics)  Book the https://www.belairbayclub.com/ (Bel-Air Bay Club) in Pacific Palisades https://open.spotify.com/episode/5lCCD4Vkl3Esk3bMdmWomZ?si=cYspvouNQhGx2OmDG8J0Yw (Listen) to Emily’s interview with Wedding Planner Jane Gerwin Book a wedding package at https://janealexandraevents.com/ (JaneAlexandra Events) Thanks for listening! Welcome back to the Catapulting Commissions podcast with your host, Anthony Garcia! Today, Anthony is having a former guest return to share even more of what they know. Erin Hatzikostas is a CEO, author, career coach, TEDs/keynote speaker, and podcast co-host. She’s determined to create a massive authenticity movement to eradicate the all-too-fake Corporate world and enable people to have a big career, without compromising everything else.   Erin’s new book, You Do You (ish) hurls aside the crusty, centuries-old career advice you’ve likely heard for way too long: lean in, executive presence, network, blah, blah, blah. Instead, the book will help you see that there's a better way to have success and get great results. An approach that will produce a massive win-win: you succeed, you don’t sell out. This book is full of stories, information, tactics, and philosophy that was begging to get written down. When she had this idea, she NEEDED to get it out. When the pandemic hit, Erin knew she would have the time a book needs to be fleshed out properly. The message was on her heart and mind, and the timing was right.   Erin states in her book “unleash your authentic superpowers to get the career you deserve.” As corporate America evolves, sometimes authenticity gets clouded. For her, authenticity in the workplace is not simply about being yourself. There is permission to be yourself, unafraid of what makes you unique, however, there is more nuance. The Greek origin of the word “authentic” means to be genuine, but also original and autorotative. This is an intersection of being yourself and being a badass. Most of her book is about how you can put in the framework to use authenticity as your secret weapon--a way to stand out and drive the chains. She developed an acronym for this sort of thing--HUMANS: Humility, Unexpected, Model, Adapt, Narrate, and Spark. Within each of those components is a weapon to equip yourself with. The underlying message is you can do things your own way. This isn’t about changing people, it’s about changing addictions. There will be some internal work rewriting the “sucky songs” or limiting beliefs that needs to be done, and Erin’s book breaks that down. Also in this framework and in Erin’s book is understanding that this is the groundwork to start experimenting. When you do, it gets you addicted to the next step.    Corporate politics are no one’s favorite, but it’s certainly prevalent these days. Anthony and Erin discuss ways to combat this behavior through authenticity. By making yourself, your team, and the work you do more human, you build genuine connections with people that have real, measurable business results. There will always be bad actors, but don’t let that deter you from going after a leadership role. You can be the person to shift the culture by being genuine and authentic. If you’re not in that role yet, this system can help you. This isn’t a leadership book, it’s a person book. The “Spark” part of her framework, or the inspiration, is a circular reference. When Erin got her job, she thought her role was to be that energizer bunny. She realized soon after her employee surveys came back that it would take more. She realized her job as a leader is to create an inspiration platform. Your job is to put in place the things that encourages inspiration to fly around the workplace from person to person. Inspiration doesn’t come from the top down--it’s a circle. You don’t need a reason to wait to make that change.    It’s hard to ignore how the pandemic has changed the workplace. Erin sees it like this: there’s been no greater tailwind for authenticity in the workplace. She fears that if we don’t act purposefully and strategically--dropping the bad and bringing along the good--we will lose momentum.    LINKS Bauthenticinc.com   https://www.amazon.com/You-Do-ish-Authentic-Superpowers-ebook/dp/B08W5C9HV7/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 @ErinHatzikostas

Do you ever feel like you just don't fit the corporate mold? Like anywhere...or in any way? Well, Scott Mason knows all too well how you're feeling, and he's determined to help people just like you find power in your authenticity. Listen in for inspiration on how you can create your own "Funkytown" and ensure you go on the journey of your life.  Erin Haztikostas interviews Scott Mason, a former lawyer turned consultant and motivational speaker. Scott was adopted by African-Americans and raised in rural Middle America in an overwhelmingly white social milieu. Scott grew up far outside of any conceivable social box and knows all to well what it's like to wrestle with the concept of being your authentic self. Erin asks Scott about his early life, and Scott describes growing up in an area where he was misunderstood and how he had a unique perspective to view social stigmas (and experience many)through a lens that many people can't even imagine.  Erin then asks about his journey from Kansas to Minnesota and then to New York city. They talk about what drove him to become a lawyer...whether it was something he always had the confidence to do or not. Scott talks about early foundational experiences of his life and how they helped shape his decision.  Scott discusses wanting to be a lawyer, and the difference between the idea we have of a lawyer's job and the actual role, and how different they are from each other. Even with that difference though, it created a drive in him that helped motivate him to keep pushing forwards and outwards. After graduating from a liberal arts college, Scott applied to Law School where he truly began to realize not only the difference between the ideal of a lawyer and the reality, but also the reality of the environment he would be in and the people surrounding him. Scott talks about the different types of people he has met in his many experiences: lawyers, politicians, public servants, and non-profit workers.  He goes into detail about the joys and difficulties of working in the non-profit world, the judgments and stigmas we hold culturally for people in different situations, how we often lack understanding as to why someone may have ended up where they are, and why they need help and guidance instead of criticism.  When Erin prompts Scott to share some career advice from his experiences, he tells a story of one of his bosses from a government agency who said some truly unforgivable thing to him. So, Scott wants you all to remember that whatever got you in the door is also what will help you survive in the outside world. Erin asks Scott about a moment of realization in his life. Scott started a business with a partner, and after deciding to leave he took the chance to "enter the providential river". Looking back on his experiences, he realized he had been asking the wrong questions and looking in the wrong places. He started thinking instead as to how he could take his experiences, his gifts and his skills, and have them be of service.  Now he has a vision, a vision where heroes go on journeys of their lives together. He wants to build a space where people can connect to find their higher purpose, to build a better self and a better world.  Erin prompts Scott for some of his suggestions on what can help people get on that journey. He firsts suggests complementing people on a good job, we so often only comment on the negatives, assuming that pointing out failures will help people improve. But we underestimate the power that comes with people uplifting other people.  He follows this by telling us that the possibilities for the future are better than we can imagine, and our inability to see that is our own limitation. So, he says, "Step into new opportunities." Finally, he wants you to understand that nothing is permanent, which sounds scary, but is actually a thing of beauty.  Website: Podcast:   To preorder Erin's book You Do You(ish):   Follow Nicole on LinkedIn:   Follow Erin on LinkedIn:   If you like jammin' with us on the podcast, b sure to join us for more fun and inspiration! "Mom, remember I told you about Amanda--a new girl in my class at school? She's really nice," Erin said one evening. "In art class today, I was looking at the picture she was painting, and my brush accidentally bumped the corner of it. I was sure she'd be mad, but she wasn't. She said not to worry--that she'd paint over it with another color." "Did that work?" asked Mom. Erin nodded. "It covered the smudge so you couldn't even see it anymore." As Erin ate breakfast the next morning, her little brother Trenton bumped his glass of milk. It tipped over, and before Erin could get out of the way, milk flowed down onto her lap. She was furious. "Trenton, you are so clumsy!" she yelled. "These are my brand-new jeans, and now I can't wear them. I'm sopping wet!" She jumped up to go and change. "Leave it to my dumb brother to spill his milk on everything!" Trenton was distraught. "I'm sorry, Erin," he said. "I didn't mean to get your clothes dirty." Erin scowled and turned away. Mom frowned. "Trenton apologized, Erin, and he's truly sorry." "Being sorry doesn't make my jeans clean," Erin muttered as she hurried to her room to change her clothes. When Erin returned to the kitchen, Trenton had left, and her mom looked at her solemnly. "You need to remember that we all make mistakes and need forgiveness at times," Mom said. "You owe your brother an apology." She held up a hand as Erin started to protest. "Remember what happened with Amanda's picture yesterday?" "Oh," Erin said quietly. She had forgotten. "Amanda covered the smudge on her picture with more paint," Mom said. "A verse in the Bible tells us what we need to cover more serious spots. It says, 'Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.' I know you love your brother, but it didn't show this morning, did it?" Soberly, Erin shook her head. "Jesus says we are to treat others with the kindness and love He has shown us," continued Mom. "When we remember how much He loves us and has forgiven us, we can respond to others in kindness instead of anger." "I'll go find Trenton," said Erin, "and tell him I'm sorry." Deana L. Rogers How About You? How do you respond when someone makes a mistake? With kindness and understanding--or mean, angry words? Even when you love them, you don't always respond in a kind way, do you? But think about the kindness and grace Jesus has shown you. Trust Him to fill you with His love for others and to help you respond to them in kindness instead of anger. Today's Key Verse: Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs. (NIV) (Proverbs 10:12 ) Today's Key Thought: Be kind to others

Real Estate Entrepreneur: What You Will Learn: I share why I became self-employed, and how I made changes to my strategy after hitting financial rock bottom How my limiting beliefs about money held me back from growing as a real estate entrepreneur, and how I got past that roadblock Why I had to learn to accept that I deserved the success I earned for myself, and why finding the right coaching was the key to that realization The difference between viewing money as “tangible” versus “intangible”, and how the way you view money impacts your goals Why eliminating financial stress and attaining financial freedom were my primary goals Why I chose to move into thought leadership and creating content through my writing and my podcast How I grew and scaled my business after realizing I couldn’t do everything by myself What the “25% rule” is and how it has helped me focus on the right priorities and guide my business strategy How I plan my day with a careful balance to maintain a positive level of energy throughout the day Why setting boundaries and staying present in the moment are important pillars of my success Build a Life You Don’t Need a Vacation From From day one, I had always been after freedom and flexibility. There is no greater appeal than time and financial freedom. But when I first got into real estate, it was difficult to identify the best path to success. After some time in the business, I realized the ultimate path to freedom was to become a real estate entrepreneur. First, I had to build my tribe, develop a strategy that played to my strengths, and create a foolproof plan for time and energy management that would take me to the top! This is the business where you can do what you want, when you want, without sacrificing your business or your home life! It is all about building a life you don’t need a vacation from, and it takes a lot of trial and error to get there. The Leap to Straight Commission I started with office duties but desperately wanted to bridge into the sales side so I could develop all the necessary skills to become a real estate entrepreneur! But that is not an easy leap to make. Going from a cushy salary to straight commission is mortifying for most people. Even when you are good at sales, there is an unbelievably steep learning curve. Whatever your motivations may be, get after it because nothing could possibly be worse than having never taken your shot at financial freedom at all. Understanding Your Relationship with Money Just to be clear, this isn’t a blind leap of faith. To make a fruitful leap as a real estate entrepreneur, you have to develop a deep understanding of your relationship with money first. We tend to riff our goals off the top of our heads based on what we’ve done before. But your fundamental goals need to come from a realistic understanding of money combined with what’s really in our hearts. When we go to write our goals for the next year, being conscious of our relationship with money will make them inevitable instead of improbable—that is the core place we need to start. Photo by Nathan McBride on Unsplash About Erin Bradley In 2007, Erin Bradley became self-employed in pursuit of “freedom and flexibility.” Unfortunately, she did so with no game plan and no safety net to speak of. By 2008, she was so broke, she had to ride her bicycle to meet a new client as she didn’t have money for gas. When Erin’s card was declined for a small coffee as the client walked through the door, she realized something had to give… Erin spent the next 3 years studying the habits of highly successful entrepreneurs, and ultimately developed a strategy to promote her value in a way that felt authentic, easy, and FUN! She also started investing in real estate, which now affords her the opportunity to live her dream life, in her dream home. (It’s easier than you might think!) By 2012, she had gone from broke to 6 figures…and she promptly burned out. Erin had no systems in place to manage the growth and found herself trading her time for money. Pregnant with their second child, she was drowning in life and in business. She tried convincing herself to be “grateful” because they finally had money to pay the bills, but she was ready to throw in the towel altogether. Luckily, Erin didn’t quit! She sought help, built systems, and started hiring. By 2015, the business had doubled again. Today, their business continues to grow and Erin does much less in order to do much more. She focuses on the essentials and shows others how to do the same! Welcome to episode 27 of Activist #MMT. Today I talk with activist Erin Taylor (Twitter/@EMaddenTaylor). Erin and I were originally scheduled to record this interview on March 11th, but she had to postpone by two weeks because of what she thought at the time was "a flu virus that has become bronchitis." Erin first describes her whole family’s experience likely being infected with the coronavirus, which they are thankfully all now close to recovering from. Along with several previous interview guests, Ryan Mathis, Geoffrey Ginter, and Iryna Rychko, Erin and I roomed together at the September 2019, Third Annual International MMT conference in Long Island, New York. Erin was introduced to Modern Monetary Theory by macroeconomics expert Ellis Winningham. They met on Twitter for reasons on related to economics, but she soon noticed that Ellis his tweets were unique among everyone she followed. At the time, Ellis did lengthy Twitter thread "lectures" on economics. Erin recalls one of them to the effect of, "Do you think the United States government goes around begging for dollars? Hey, China, we want to start a war, could you lend us some dollars? We don’t have any." Erin and I have a wide ranging conversation on politics and economics. Here are four highlights: How the crisis is hitting her relatively wealthy neighborhood, including long lines for bag lunches at local schools, which is reminiscent of soup kitchen lines during the great depression. Avoiding overselling the job guarantee as activists, and emphasizing how its core is that it solves involuntary unemployment. The basics of the public option being proposed as an alternative to Medicare For All, and the negative affects of bolting it on top of our for-profit healthcare industry. Before we begin, a correction. When Erin uses the term "circling the drain" she’s actually referring to something called a "death spiral." This is a condition where healthy people leave an insurance plan, causing prices to rise for the less healthy people that remain. Finally, before getting to my conversation with Erin, I’m going to read a classic Facebook post by Ellis Winningham: Other resources and links The book Democracy in Chains by Duke university professor Nancy McLean Whistleblower and "former insurance propagandist" Wendell Potter on Twitter. My interview with a physician on the basics of coronavirus. My interview with Ryan Mathis. Steven Hail MMT and coronavirus lecture (full audio) given likely while infected by the virus. Nathan Tankus' substack blog on The Federal Reserve and its response to the health crisis. The scene from The Core evoking MMT: Link to video First person account from Italian resident that made it clear to me (and Ryan Mathis) that coronavirus was more than "just a serious flu." Ryan and I discuss this at the beginning of our recent interview. Link to tweet

That really shifted my mindset in that moment.  I'm going to commit to myself to make sure that I take this time and to not waste this quarantine. To do things that I've wanted to do to make commitments to my team. I have a little short list of things that I am now working on personally. Now is the time for me to do this. I'm making a commitment to grow from this.  If I had advice, I would say, do what you can if you're in a position where you can seize this as an opportunity, grow from this experience. Have you ever wondered what it would take to run a large-scale organization? Do you ever find yourself asking ‘what does a CEO actually do?’ How do they make dramatic shifts and changes in their company’s culture? How do they lead in times of uncertainty? Today’s guest is an expert on exactly these topics. On the podcast this week is Erin Hatzikostas, prolific speaker, podcast host, and edu-tainer. Through her company, b Authentic inc, Erin is provoking a movement to eradicate the all-too-fake corporate environment by inspiring and enabling an army of people to crush their career, without compromising everything else.   When Erin decided to leave her $500,000/year job, it wasn’t because things were going downhill or that anything was wrong. In fact, things were great. She had great personal equity, financial equity, and she had just turned around a multi-million dollar company. She felt she needed a change, so she made one. She likens it to a mountain range--when you start to get closer to the top of one mountain, suddenly you are able to see all the other ranges and peaking opportunities. Erin discusses the importance of transparency as a high-level business person and a professional leader. Being upfront with your team can help build rapport with both those who manage you and the team you oversee alike. Be vulnerable, she says, it the best way to do business. It’s about asking what’s working well, what isn’t what we can do about it, and how we can help.   Then, Erica breaks down three tips we can implement in our team to establish a more positive employee culture: Give up some power. Let a board of directors lead the way. Invest in Leadership training Create an ‘inspiration platform’ that allows employees to share what is motivating them. Erica also talks about the H tenants of authentic leadership:   Humor Humility Heartfelt Honest Hip   Tune in to listen to Erin’s expert advice and incredible wisdom! What you’ll learn In today’s episode, Erin educates us on what it means to be an authentic leader in today’s world. In light of the Corona Virus event that is currently going on, many companies are finding it necessary to downsize during this economic slump and have unanswered questions about what might be coming next. There is another side to this situation, however: This may actually be the perfect time to recruit and hire your A-players. On today’s show, Sabrina, Mike, and their guest, Erin Longmoon, owner of Zephyr Recruiting, LLC, discuss seizing opportunities in anticipation of an economic turn-around. Listen in to learn how you can use this uncertain time to your advantage! Erin Longmoon’s mission in life is to eradicate toxic workplaces. She believes that everyone deserves to love their job and feel like they are contributing to a greater purpose. As the owner of Zephyr Recruiting LLC, she accomplishes this mission by matching great small businesses with their RIGHT FIT™ employees. Erin has more than two decades of experience helping small businesses and has owned five businesses herself. The passion to eradicating toxic workplaces comes from a place a lot of us can resonate with. When Erin was an employee at a company with a toxic workplace, she saw firsthand how the culture impacted everyone on a deep level. The toxic workplace reduced morale and productivity, followed her home, and led good employees to quit.   She dreams of changing people’s lives by helping them realize that they are deeply worthy. She also dreams about being the next Stevie Nicks and being friends with the Dalai Lama. Her magic powers are empathy, ability to read people, coming up with new and awesome ideas, and making a perfectly cooked filet mignon. As the owner of Zephyr Recruiting, she oversees an amazing work-at-home team that shares her passion for supporting great places to work. Profit by Design is a Tap the Potential production in collaboration with Small Business Consulting Group. Show Highlights: This is an opportunity to rebuild the employee brand of the company. This is also an opportunity to find new A-players that would be an asset to your team. Erin addresses various reasons why the hiring market currently has a healthy supply of A-players. Many of the Tap the Potential clients have been doing Profit First so they are in a very strong cash position. It takes around 40 hours to recruit per role, according to Erin. Some of Zephyr’s clients are hiring people on a contingency basis. They make an offer to the one A-player they don’t want to lose. When you’re hiring, present an offer that is a little higher than the going rate, and then over time show them how you’re going to get them to the 90th percentile for pay over the next year or two, assuming they hit certain benchmarks. Some states are allowing employees to come on board for a limited number of hours per week for on-boarding and training without it affecting their unemployment. Dr. Sabrina shares how her clients in the construction industry say business is booming. Traditionally, certain positions have been very hard to fill but now it is an employee market. Erin explains “Employee Brand Marketing”. Dr. Sabrina explains how this Profit By Design podcast always encourages the building of sustainably profitable businesses and shares hiring tips from her book,  How to Hire the Best. Erin and Dr. Sabrina discuss the importance of wording job descriptions. Zephyr differentiates itself from other recruiting companies in a number of ways. There are two places where the interview process can go awry: the interview and failure to check references. Zephyr puts in some extra steps here to avoid the snafus. It is truly my pleasure to introduce you to my guest today, Dr. Erin Wiley! Dr. Wiley is not only a Naturopathic Doctor, but she is also the person that I co-founded the Integrative Health Institute with back in 2008. And while I moved on from IHI, Erin blossomed that practice into a space that houses over twenty-five practitioners. We talk about a lot of things that people don’t want to talk about or even hear. Still, they are very real, challenging, and difficult circumstances surrounding pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. It’s important to share these stories because these difficulties become a reality for many people. Today’s show focuses on birth trauma and breastfeeding as we hear our guest’s personal account. Erin Northrup is a mom of four busy children, ranging in age from 2-10. She lives in Atlantic Canada, where she enjoys spending time in nature with her family. With the birth of her oldest child, Jack, she experienced birth trauma, and this experience sparked her passion for researching trauma. Erin holds a bachelor’s in Psychology and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Health Services Research. Her current research explores the experience of breastfeeding after birth trauma. Her own experience of breastfeeding after birth trauma inspired her to become a volunteer with a breastfeeding support organization offering community-based, peer to peer breastfeeding support. She is committed to raising awareness of the intersection of birth trauma, breastfeeding, and perinatal mental health. Show Highlights: Erin’s birth trauma experience with the birth of her son, Jack, now 10 How her Ob prepared her to have a C-section because of an ambiguous condition How Erin’s water broke a week early, and her spinal didn’t take, so the C-section proceeded under general anesthesia, while Erin felt dissociated from the entire experience In recovery, she was told that her son was taken to the NICU because of low blood sugar, and she couldn’t see him yet How Erin’s mom, a physician, stepped in to advocate for Erin to see her son While eating breakfast a few hours after the birth, Erin felt a popping sensation in her incision and felt a gush of blood Erin was rushed back to the OR, and the spinal worked this time while Erin cried on the table--all of this was before she had even held her baby How Erin was repeatedly spoken about like she wasn’t even in the room; she felt like her input wasn’t even important When Erin got home, survival mode kicked in, and she regretted not advocating more strongly for herself How Erin questioned whether or not her son was even the right baby, worrying that a mix-up could have occurred in the hospital because neither she nor her husband witnessed his birth How she determined to “make it up” to her son by breastfeeding him How the Ob told her at two months postpartum that her condition should not have warranted a C-section in the first place---which just made everything worse How Erin felt an erosion of trust in her doctors and the medical system How Erin asked where the growth and meaning was in her situation and how she could use her experience to help others Erin applied to a Master’s program and went on to have three more kids with positive birth experiences How Erin found support for breastfeeding What Erin has found in her research by asking mothers about their experience with birth trauma and breastfeeding The magnitude of the response she has received, but the difficulty in hearing the painful stories of birth trauma The results from Erin’s research: Birth trauma is destabilizing to the breastfeeding process because of the physical and emotional pain in childbirth and the postpartum from mistreatment The importance of trauma-informed care How women with these experiences feel like the trauma is somehow their fault What care providers should be aware of in their work Resources: Instagram: Live Learn Lactate

The 5K has become such a popular race distance. You can find multiple 5Ks year-round all across the country. They’re fun to run. They’re fun to walk. They’re fun as community builders.  But we rarely know the stories behind them…behind each individual 5K. The reason for the race and what the funds are being used for. I’ve been trying to get you all to sign up for the Race for Hope for months now. And there’s still time to sign up, by the way. The 5K, half, and full marathon will be held February 22nd in Lufkin and the link to register is in my show notes. But do you know the purpose of the Race for Hope? To raise money for East Texas Cancer Alliance of Hope. A few years ago, Ashley Berry faced a cancer diagnosis. As she went through treatment, her community stepped in and helped her financially. She’s now been cancer free for five years and she formed East Texas Cancer Alliance of Hope to help others in her community who are fighting cancer by providing groceries, or gas money, or school clothes for their kids. She believes in community.  So does today’s guest, Erin Froehner. When Erin gave birth to her first baby, Addalyn, she found out Addalyn had trisomy 18. It was other parents of children with trisomy who provided her with the skills and knowledge she needed to take care of Addalyn. When Addalyn passed away a few years ago, Erin took over Hope for Trisomy, a non-profit organization that provides support, education, and resources to other families who are loving kids with trisomy.  And each March, Erin hosts a 5K in Arlington, Texas. The 5K raises funds for Hope for Trisomy, provides a way for her community to meet new people, and educates the runners and walkers about the children the organization has helped.  Here is my conversation with Erin about Addalyn, Hope for Trisomy, and the 5K.   Show Notes:   Race for Hope Registration Race for Hope Info Hope for Trisomy Website Hope for Trisomy on Facebook Register for the Hope for Trisomy 5K   Follow In A Skirt:   In A Skirt Website In A Skirt on Facebook In A Skirt on Instagram In A Skirt on Twitter

She carried that rebel spirit into her career, founding her company on the premise that tech doesn't have to be cold and heartless.  Plus, in her new book, Erin encourages her fellow entrepreneurs and business leaders to trust their purpose and embrace impact as the true measure of success. Plus, you can also throw in not looking like how a tech entrepreneur is ‘supposed' to look.  But Erin Rollenhagen has always defied the odds and established her own set of rules.  In fact, she went against the grain and at age 14, led a protest against misogynistic behavior at her middle school and drew national media attention (and almost got kicked out of middle school too!)  Erin carried that “fist in the air” stand up for what you believe in spirit into her career as a tech entrepreneur, by founding a company on the belief that technology doesn't have to be heartless and cold.    Recently, she released her book, “Soul Uprising: It's Never Just Business,” which encourages business leaders and entrepreneurs to trust their purpose and embrace impact as the true measure of success. In 2007, Erin Bradley became self-employed in pursuit of “freedom and flexibility.” Unfortunately, she did so with no game plan and no safety net to speak of. By 2008, she was so broke, she had to ride her bicycle to meet a new client as she didn’t have money for gas. When Erin’s card was declined for a small coffee as the client walked through the door, she realized something had to give… Erin spent the next 3 years studying the habits of highly successful entrepreneurs, and ultimately developed a strategy to promote her value in a way that felt authentic, easy and FUN! She also started investing in real estate, which now affords her the opportunity to live her dream life, in her dream home. (It’s easier than you might think!) By 2012, she had gone from broke to 6 figures… and she promptly burned out. What you will learn from this episode: Erin shares why she became self-employed, and she shares her powerful story of realizing she had to make changes to her strategy after hitting financial rock bottom How Erin’s limiting beliefs about money held her back from growing as an entrepreneur, and how she got past that roadblock Why Erin had to learn to accept that she deserved the success she earned for herself, and why finding the right coaching was the key to that realization Erin explains the difference between viewing money as “tangible” versus “intangible”, and how the way you view money impacts your goals Why eliminating financial stress and attaining financial freedom were Erin’s primary goals for herself and her family Why Erin chose to move into thought leadership and creating content through her writing and her podcast How Erin grew and scaled her business after realizing she couldn’t do everything by herself What the “25% rule” is and how it has helped Erin focus on the right priorities and guide her business strategy How Erin plans her day with a careful balance to help her maintain a positive level of energy throughout the day Why setting boundaries and staying present in the moment are important pillars of Erin’s success Resources: Instagram: @pursuingfreedomofficial Email: Erin@pursuingfreedom.com Website: www.pursuingfreedom.com Pursuing Freedom Podcast: www.pursuingfreedom.com/podcast Erin Bradley’s Live Workshop: www.pursuingfreedom.com/webinar Pursuing Freedom by Erin Bradley: https://amzn.to/2QnzeTW

This conversation is with scientist and primate expert Erin Kane (@Diana_monkey). In the course of this podcast we talk about Erin’s work on Diana monkeys in Côte d’Ivoire and her work on orangutans in Borneo. We discuss her research findings on monkeys, collecting poo samples and how dancing helped her build up confidence for fieldwork. We also cover the cognitive load and impact of sexual harassment faced by many women in the scientific setting and in fieldwork settings. Erin Kane (https://erinelizkane.net/) is a postdoctoral research associate at Boston University, working with Dr. Cheryl Knott on a project examining life history influences on orangutan feeding ecology in Gunung Palung National Park, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, with an emphasis on nutritional and endocrine analysis. She completed her PhD at Ohio State University in 2017. Her dissertation examined the social, ecological, and reproductive consequences of seasonal changes in food availability for Diana monkeys living in Taï National Park, Côte d’Ivoire. She is broadly interested in understanding primate responses to fluctuating food availability, particularly from socioecological, endocrine, and morphological perspectives. She also aims to make anthropology and primatology more inclusive and accessible sciences for a diverse group of scientists. When Erin isn't in a rain forest chasing primates and collecting their urine and feces, she loves taking ballet and spending time with her fantastic cat, Triceratops. High school is a difficult time for every teenager. When Erin enters a large public high school in 1980, she’s more than a little intimidated. Shocked by the realization that the legacy of her southern Alabama town isn’t a thing of the past, Erin struggles to find her way and in the process forms several important relationships. Brittany, whose genuine friendship and unconditional support help Erin navigate her unfamiliar surroundings. Shelby, whose strength and confidence challenge Erin to make her own decisions. And Emmet, whose magnetism and acceptance inspires her to dream of a different future. As the years pass, Erin’s new bonds grow stronger. And together, they search for the answer to one important question: How do you define your own path, feel like you belong, and yet resist all of the social pressures and rigid expectations? Tragically, after their time in high school ends, Erin becomes separated from these important friends. Alone, she struggles to find the courage to continue her journey. Ultimately, she is forced with a life-defining choice. Her decision will catapult Erin into adulthood, will test her faith, love and courage, and inevitably have an impact on the lives of those she loves most. “Everybody Needs A Bridge” is the story of how the bonds we form and the decisions we make when we are young shape our future self. As a white, middle-class female growing up in a socially segregated Alabama town, Erin is raised to embrace people regardless of gender, class and race. But when those theoretical lessons become reality, she is faced with hard choices and no clear solutions. Colleen will speak about how her book speaks to racial tensions in the country today, the intricacies of and interracial relationship, and why she chose to base a book on her real life, but write under a pen name. Colleen D. Scott, basing her engrossing novel on real-life events, takes us on a coming-of-age journey through Erin’s high school years and beyond. Amidst racial tensions and societal pressures, Erin dreams of pursing a life free of oppressive expectations. As she grows, important relationships and life-changing events challenge her to determine her own path, despite the difficulties. In the face of unspeakable tragedy and enduring adversity, Erin must decide if what she wants is worth the consequences she will face. Readers will undoubtedly empathize with Erin’s journey and the problems presented by growing up in a society grappling with change. Scott brings a unique perspective to a pivotal story about discovering who you are meant to be. After decades spent pursuing a career in the corporate world and raising three incredible children, Colleen decided to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an author. Raised in southern Alabama, this new author artfully weaves compelling story lines with emotion evoking characters into biting social commentary. And like most southern women, Colleen enjoys great food, football and reading a great book on a sandy beach.

Erin Odom blogs at TheHumbledHomemaker.com. She’s wife to Will and Mommy to a lovely trio of redheaded girls and one sweet baby boy (yay! another boy mom!). Erin says she’s a recovering overwhelmed homemaker, and she writes about motherhood, homemaking, healthy living, and family finances. Her debut book, More than Just Making It: Hope for the Heart of the Financially Frustrated, is coming out on September 5th. I just have so much praise for her book! I’m so excited for Erin and delighted to have her as my guest today. Welcome to the show, Erin! Listen Now 2:10 - How a Low Point Turned into a Brilliant Book When Erin’s family was living the difficult story she recounts in her book, she would think to herself, “God is teaching me so much. What good will come from this? If I ever make it through this time, I want to do all I can to shatter the shame and stigma of the poor.”  But she never envisioned she would write a full book, and with a major publisher! Erin was raised in upper-class middle America, went to private school, and received a college education. Yet her book opens with Erin walking into the Department of Social Services to apply for food stamps. Like many of us would be, Erin was embarrassed and shocked to have found herself in that position. In fact, she says her pride was so strong that initially, she thought she would write an expose on government aid and how broken the system was! Erin’s story is one of being humbled over and over again. Her book formally began when an agent, actually through Facebook, reached out to her. Her agent told her three things were needed to publish a book: Be Able to Write Have A Platform Have a Story That Meets A Heartfelt Need Erin had several long phone conversations with her agent about her life, what she’d learned, and ideas she had, but things kept coming back to this low point in her life. While going through this time she would think, “We are just barely making it,” but at some point the tables began to turn and she started saying, “Okay, we can be more than just making it.” 6:45 - The Long Road to Publishing   Book writing can be more rigorous and drawn out than you might think! Erin signed with her agent in January 2014. She took two years to write book proposals due to other professional projects. Her book was finally written in 2016, and is now getting published in late 2017. Thanks to the time between the actual living through these events and the writing of her book, Erin had already processed much of the emotions bound up in her story. She had shared bits and pieces of the story to real life friends and blog readers, and already faced much of that shame and privilege in the eye. 8:15 - Expecting Critics Erin is also wisely looking ahead and anticipating critics. Especially due to the controversial nature of a few, main topics in her book - like government assistance - she knows there will be people who disagree. Erin says she’s at peace with that now, but also won’t be surprised if she sheds strong emotions when that first negative review comes! But even still, she says she couldn’t NOT have written her story. 11:30 - If You’re Thinking About Writing A Controversial Book (or Business) Especially for other Christians, Erin’s chief advice is to pray about the decision. Her book couldn’t have been written without lots of prayer! Also, she suggests doing a ton of research on your topic. Erin had her own story, but also she needed to research the facts to help her gain objectivity. 13:10 - Wisely Choosing What Influences Your Work Whatever book or business you want to produce, you’ll be influenced by what you read and listen to during the process. A couple of books in particular were foundational to Erin’s writing process during the proposal phase. She was very drawn to books which read like fiction, even if they weren’t! Bonnie Gray’s Finding Spiritual Whitespace was one such book on Erin’s list. Gray did offer practical tips on how to find whitespace, which was helpful to Erin in a time of entrepreneurial burnout, but her book was framed in memoir. Erin really loved that feeling! Emily T. Wierenga’s Atlas Girl, was another title that gripped Erin’s attention. Wierenga’s book didn’t have a practical element, but she does chronicle her time moving around the world, alongside the story of her mother having a terminal illness. Erin took this inspiration and thought, “if I want to write a book geared toward financial practicality, I don’t want it to be dry and boring.” She wanted her book to take her readers into the story. Erin wants people to feel that space with her, and evoke their empathy. “The way we evoke empathy for other people's stories is by sharing our stories.” 17:00 - The Hard Work of Book Writing Writing this book wasn’t easy, even having always loved writing and majoring in Journalism! Erin says she thought it would be much easier to write her book than it was. Around 2015 she was in entrepreneurial burnout mode, and simply longed to write. As her blog became a business, she got farther away from those writing roots and wanted to get back. Since this was her heart, she thought book writing would be easier....but it was MUCH harder! The memoir was emotionally difficult to write. There were many layers of her financial situation, and painful realities to walk through - some of those stories made it into the book and some didn’t. But writing the practical part? Well, Erin confesses that it was kind of boring to write! (We’re all business moms, aren’t we? We can admit there are boring parts to business, right!?) Primarily, Erin wondered if readers would even be helped by her tips! She didn’t want to write a book that only gave people the warm fuzzies, she wanted to write a book that gave steps to life change. (Phew! Erin placed a tall order on herself with this book… but I think she totally delivered!) 18:50 - What If This Is Super Obvious? It’s tempting to think that everyone already knows the things we do. When Erin was writing the book, she incorporated many tips her parents instilled in her. Both Erin’s parents grew up in large families with not a lot of extras; and though her own father had a great job, frugal living was the norm. She realized in the moment that God prepared her for her lean years since she was a girl. And Erin realized while writing the book that not everyone grew up in a family that was super frugal like hers was. (What’s common sense to us is often knowledge that others need to learn about!) 22:10 - Hope for the Frustrated If Erin could tell a mom feeling financially frustrated just one thing it would be, “There is always hope.” Of course, she can’t predict levels of financial success, but she can say, “Wherever you are doesn’t mean you’ll be there the rest of your life.” In any trial, it’s easy to think the trial will go on in the same way forever. Erin says, “Especially if you are listening to Brilliant Business Moms and you’re an entrepreneur, trying to make a business for your family, you’ve already taken a big step!” One major issue the Odoms discovered is that they had an income problem. A key component of her book is to identify that if you’re financially frustrated, you may have either an income problem or a spending problem. Once you know the root cause, you can find a solution. “If you have a small biz or are planning on starting one, you are steps beyond what many are,” Erin says. 25:05 - Making a Blog a Business The Humbled Homemaker (Erin’s successful blog) launched in 2011 and it was on a bit of a whim. She was freelancing for newspapers, and one of her editors told her, “Erin, there are moms making an income from home with their blogs.” The idea was certainly intriguing to her! At first, Erin had absolutely no money to invest into a business. There are lots of ways to start a blog or business by investing money up front, and you usually do get quicker returns. But Erin didn’t even have $10.00 for a website domain. Her first domain literally was thehumbledhomemaker.blogspot.com. Back then, as is true now, you couldn’t monetize a wordpress.com site but you could monetize blogspot.com domains. Erin’s blog was completely DIY’ed. Though one crucial step was Erin getting into a mastermind group from the beginning. The group provided her tons of resources, one of which included a friend who was eager to design her site! It was about 2 years before Erin was making more money online than her husband made as a teacher, and it was 3 before she was making a very good income from her blog. Erin and her husband Will thought a LOT about whether or not  he should quit his job. In 2014, he went down to teaching 4 days a week, and in December 2016, he totally quit his job as a teacher One reason her husband didn’t make the leap to quit his job was because they weren’t sure if their marriage would survive working together!! It’s a joke, but with a bit of truth to it! The first 6 weeks of working together in early 2017 went really well...and then their 4th baby was born! As with most newborns, a family adjustment was required. But 8 months in, Erin says it’s gotten better as time has gone on. Blogging as a business isn’t easy, and comes with lots of work. (Pssst. Another venture Erin had a big hand in was starting the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle with Stephanie Langford!) With all of these activities spinning at once, when Erin’s agent signed her, she was in a stage of burnout. But thankfully her agent did not pressure her to write a book proposal right away. (And it is highly unusual for an agent to not put pressure on writing a book proposal!) 29:50 - Book Marketing Some authors will receive a launch budget from their publisher, but not most! You have to do a LOT of marketing yourself, even with a traditional publisher. Erin did receive a marketing budget but is still pouring a lot of her own time and money into the book. One benefit of a traditional publisher Erin enjoyed is that she didn’t have to hire an editor or designer for her book. The quality of those services was very high caliber. Receiving a marketing budget depends largely on the publisher and the size of the author’s platform. But even with a marketing budget, Erin says that a publisher would not cover 100% of those expenses. The publisher may have a plan in mind, but the author will lead the way. In fact, some of Erin’s marketing ideas were covered by the publisher, while others were not. 32:44 - Why Traditionally Published? It’s possible to make more money by self-publishing if you know how to market well, so why traditionally publish? Erin says working with people has made it really worthwhile! She loves the accountability, and it fits her personality well to work with a publisher. That’s not to say she would never self-publish another book, but she’s really enjoyed this experience! 33:20 - Book Payments Let’s talk about the book money, honey! It is traditional to get paid part of the book’s advance before even writing the book! Erin’s publisher pays the advance in thirds. She got one third when she signed the book deal, the second 3rd upon getting the completed manuscript, and the final third when the book is published. Other publishers offer 50% upfront, and 50% when book gets published. Erin’s blog has taken somewhat of a backseat to the book, and so having that advance money is a really nice cushion as the blog is her family’s primary source of income! 35:40 Mark your Calendars for Erin’s Next Book! Erin already has her 2nd book on contract! It is a gift book that will come out in 2018. (And, yes, Erin wrote 2 books and had a baby in a twelve-month period, which she tells us isn’t necessarily recommended!) The upcoming book is a gift book, and it’s called ‘You Can Stay Home with Your Kids: 100 Tips, Tricks, and Ways to Make it Work on a Budget’. Actually a team at her publishing house came up with the concept and title, and asked her if she would write it! Erin was amazed that books go up on Amazon while they’re being written! (Like the book Erin is still writing which will come out in 2018.) Why the early-bird treatment? In the book world, preorders are everything. I just loved sitting down with Erin and chatting about her story, her incredible book, and her business wisdom. I hope you’ll go grab your copy of More than Just Making It, because I know you’ll find it incredibly encouraging and chock full of practical advice! 37:40 - Adorable Mom Moment You’ll have to tune in to the podcast to hear all about the sweet moments that are happening between Erin’s girls and their new little brother.
