A successful mindset can help you achieve more. Guest expert Erin Jewell Gerst shares the effects of stress, our subconscious, and mindfulness. Hear insights about: Why Erin's coaching is focused on sharing a message that inspires, empowers and uplifts other women in business Why Erin chose to focus on working with women leaders and the general challenges they face in their careers How Erin's speaking work in the past year has focused on cultural diversity, and why she has a passion for mindfulness and mindset work Why the unprecedented real estate market is causing many professionals to question themselves, and what advice Erin would share with anyone who feels out of alignment Why high-performing achievers often overlook the importance of stress management, and why our biology needs a restful period outside the fight-or-flight response How our “good stress events” often slip into negative stress because we aren't allowing ourselves healthy pauses to rest and reset Why the very different lessons boys and girls are taught in childhood can often hold us back from success in adulthood Why asking for help can be so difficult for entrepreneurs, and why “putting your hand up” even when it feels awkward is important A Successful Mindset I know you've heard me talk about the importance of mindset many times before… and that's because it really does make a huge difference in how much you can achieve! A successful mindset can empower you to more easily reach your goals, minimize stress in your life, and overcome your own fears and limiting beliefs. In this week's episode of Pursuing Freedom, I'm joined by my friend Erin Jewell Gerst. Erin is anExecutive Mindset and Growth Coach, an International Speaker and a Professor of Leadership at Villanova University. She was named a Top 10 Coach of 2021 by Thrive Global for her extraordinary work, and her clients are primarily women in leadership in many different fields. During our conversation, Erin shares how being “always on” and not giving yourself time to rest and release your stress can have a cascading effect on your life and the quality of your work… and it can even turn positive stressors (exciting news and changes) into negative ones. However, if you do the work to master the successful mindset, you can reduce your stress and achieve more with less effort and headache. A Successful Mindset Needs a Stress-Relief Valve As Erin explained during our conversation, humans evolved a fight-or-flight response for a reason: it's supposed to help us out in big, dangerous situations. However, in our modern lives we don't have to fight sabertooth tigers or run from predators, and many of us have become stuck in that “always on” fight-or-flight mode. The problem is, we need periods of rest and calm to “reset” our responses to stressful situations. Our systems were designed to give us a temporary burst of adrenaline but weren't designed to live in a constant state of go-go-go. Never taking a break from the stress and pressure has all kinds of negative effects on our sleep, our physical and hormonal health, and on our mindset. It's important to take a period step back and let our systems reset to a calm state to achieve a truly successful mindset! Unlearning Early Lessons One of the other big points Erin brought up in our discussion is how, from a very early age, boys and girls are taught to handle things differently. Little girls are often given the message that “you're such a great helper” while boys are taught “you can push harder and get better”. These lessons often chase us into adulthood, where women are left to feel that they must always be good at everything and they're less likely to apply for jobs they believe themselves to be underqualified for. Meanwhile, men have internalized the message that “I can figure this out as I go”. The worst part is, both groups are left with this nagging doubt and a resistance to asking for help for fear of seeming incompetent! But there should never be any shame associated with asking for help when you need it! Let's face it, we're always going to be our own worst critics. Learning to ask for help even when it feels uncomfortable to do so is so important. Recognizing your own limits and owning your strengths AND your weaknesses isn't “admitting failure”, it's showing that you're self-aware. And that empowerment can truly unlock a successful mindset that will help you achieve your goals! Asking others for help? Real estate professionals often struggle with doing it, but it can be the key to unlocking your potential for success. Hear insights about: Why Erin recommends you read “Who Not How” by Dan Sullivan, and what important lessons you can draw from the book Why people often become the bottleneck that holds them back from unlocking their full potential for success, and why asking others for help can transform your life Why you should ask yourself who can help you achieve more, instead of asking yourself how you will get there What steps you can take to better manage your energy, focus on positivity, and attract new opportunities Why procrastination is a key indicator that maybe asking others to help you with that aspect of your life is a good idea How asking others for help can create a positive domino effect on your time, your energy and your mindset What key questions to ask yourself to help you recognize where in your life asking others for help can benefit you Erin offers a suggestion to pay attention to your work and life over the next week and identify areas of resistance that are draining you Asking Others For Help It takes a special kind of person to strike out on their own as an entrepreneur. Doing so requires a lot of guts, tenacity, ambition, drive, and willpower. And, while those are all great qualities to have, they can also cause us to get in our own way. It's very easy to convince ourselves that we're the only ones who can do things “the right way,” and so we try to wear every hat ourselves. So what happens? We become the bottleneck to our own success. There are only so many hours in a week, and when we spread ourselves too thin across those precious hours we can find our energy drained and our motivation sapped. In this week's “solocast” episode of the Pursuing Freedom podcast, I want to talk to you about the importance of asking others for help, and I want to share with you the transformative power doing so can have on your business…and your life! Identifying Areas Where Others Can Help Do you ever feel anxiety or even dread, when you look at your calendar and see certain tasks coming up? Do you think “Ugh, I really don't want to have to do that, I'll put it off until tomorrow?” The activities that make us feel that way are different for everyone, but the end result is the same: the wind gets sucked right out of our sails. These tasks, the ones you know you want to put off or avoid, might be ideal places where asking others for help can make all the difference! Consider what would change in your life if you knew you could give someone else that task and they would execute on it. What would you do with that extra time? Would not having to face the things you don't like doing give you back some of your precious time and energy? What sort of positive domino effect would not having to do that thing have on your mindset and your life? Asking Others For Help Isn't About Weakness Really, it's about prioritizing your time. Asking others for help with the things you don't love doing can free you to focus on the fun parts, the things you feel the most energized and excited about, and the things that can really move the needle forward for your business. Hiring someone to spend an hour or two each week focusing on the things you feel anxious about has such a positive impact on your energy and your motivation! I strongly encourage you to read “Who Not How: The Formula to Achieve Bigger Goals Through Accelerating Teamwork” by Dan Sullivan. In it, the author shares tips and strategies for asking others for help with the areas that drain your energy, so that you can spend more time focusing on the things you're really passionate about! You don't have to grind harder, and you can get more done in less time! In this episode, I share tips and strategies for taking regular time out for self reflection and goal setting, and I explain why it’s so important to do. Hear insights about: Why it is important to regularly take a pause and give yourself space to reflect on where you are, and what is and isn’t in alignment with your goals Why our brains often look for distractions to occupy us because “the absence of stimuli causes discomfort” Why we should “embrace the pause” and take time out for self reflection and goal setting instead of allowing our mind to look for distractions Why Erin chose to go 100% commission and set her own time and schedule, and why at first she struggled with forcing herself to be “always on” How Erin found clarity to focus less on who she wanted to become and focus more on “unbecoming” and fighting the impulse to multitask Why learning to be fully present in each and every moment is a process that takes time and intentionality Why “busyness” doesn’t necessarily equal “more business”, and why taking the time to pause for self reflection and goal setting of less work-related goals is vital Why you should ask yourself if your current reality is aligned with your long-term goals, and why you are the only one who can take control of your life and mindset Why the actions we take reflect our “real priorities” rather than the things we tell ourselves are our priorities What steps you can take to learn to embrace the pause, refresh yourself, and unlock your true creativity Embrace the Pause: Self Reflection and Goal Setting When you find yourself with some time to kill, what is the first thing you do? If you’re like many of us, you reach for your phone or check your emails and messages. It’s a habit that almost all of us are familiar with. But why do we do it? I recently listened to a 10-minute guided meditation on the Calm app, and the host, Tamara Levitt, said something really profound that stuck with me. “The absence of stimuli causes discomfort.” Let’s unpack that. We’ve all trained our brains to constantly seek stimulation. We fall into the habit of obsessively checking our emails, scrolling social media… anything to fill the gaps in our day. And yet, it’s those very gaps, the quiet moments, where we can recharge, reflect, and tap into our true creative potential. Instead of always filling our time with mindless stimulation, I suggest instead that you “embrace the pause”. Turn those moments into something fulfilling, truly productive, and meaningful. Self Reflection and Goal Setting The next time you find yourself trying to fill time with stimuli, use that moment instead to reflect on where you are in life right now. Be in this moment. Are you where you want to be right now? Are all the parts of your life in alignment with your goals? Are those goals still applicable to you or do you need to update them? Are the actions you are taking a reflection of the things you prioritize? Taking the time for self reflection and goal setting with your real priorities in mind is such a powerful thing! You can’t get to where you want to be if you don’t know where you are right now, and especially in this chaotic and unprecedented real estate market, you need to take the time to recharge and reflect. The Power of Unbecoming We spend a lot of time focusing on where we want to be in the future, but we seldom stop to consider where we are right at this moment. But a big part of growth isn’t just moving forward toward something, it’s also about “unbecoming”…recognizing the habits and mindset you have now that isn’t helping you move forward. Imagine you’re in a boat, and off on the horizon is everything you want from your life. You’re paddling and paddling, trying to get closer to your destination. But there are parts of you that may not be aligned and may be paddling in a completely different direction, so instead of making real progress, you’re just floating around in a circle. “Unbecoming” is about getting those parts working together toward the same goal (or pushing them overboard!) And when you take the time for self reflection and goal setting in those quiet moments, you can start making a real difference in how quickly you can get to where you want to be. I hope you enjoy this week’s Pursuing Freedom episode, and that the information I share is helpful in allowing you to give yourself permission to embrace the pause! Bureaucratic Pockets of Effectiveness in Ghana with Erin McDonnell

Today's guest is Erin McDonnell, Professor of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame. She joins us on the show to discuss her recent book Patchwork Leviathan, which looks at the emergence of bureaucratic pockets of effectiveness, or high performing groups, within otherwise weak state administrations with a particular focus on Ghana. We unpack Erin's findings on the causes of these bureaucratic pockets of effectiveness, hearing Erin firstly sketch out what she calls the dual habitus brain. In the pockets of effectiveness Erin studied, she found that many of the participants shared an educational profile which they melded with their knowledge of local conditions. We consider other possible causes of pockets of effectiveness such as team dynamics, the ability to use discretion, systems for reward and the acceptance of failure, and human motives that are difficult to measure formally. We also consider some of the characteristics that keep these pockets of effectiveness robust, a particularly unexpected one being the characteristic of built-in redundancy. Other themes discussed are whether the recent discovery of oil poses a threat to Ghanaian pockets of effectiveness, Erin's personal approach to effective bureaucratic management, and a whole lot more. So for an episode packed with personal anecdotes and local case studies from Ghana and beyond tune in today!    Key Points From This Episode: •  How bureaucracies are made up of human beings, not just rules. •  Erin's experiences of Ghanaian culture; food, people, and her fieldwork. •  Perspectives on the idea that there is a lot of variation within states. •  Why Erin's research began with identifying high-performing groups of the state. •  The common educational profile of people in Ghanaian pockets of effectiveness. •  Better transnational institutional transfer after melding foreign practices in a local context. •  How the idea of the ‘founding team' factors into pockets of effectiveness. •  What principal agent theory gets wrong when studying bureaucracies. •  Perspectives on agency autonomy and how it plays into cultivating pockets of effectiveness. •  How the charter city can become its own pocket of effectiveness. •  Examples of how discretion is a motivating force for people who are pro-socially minded. •  How systems of reward and acceptance of failure can drive motivation. •  Perspectives on the role of clustering and agglomeration in shaping new culture in cities and pockets of effectiveness. •  The role of redundancy in keeping pockets of effectiveness more stable. •  Whether the recent discovery of oil in Ghana poses a threat to pockets of effectiveness. •  The role of informal characteristics in accomplishing tasks in organizations and how these are measured. •  Contrasts and connections between ‘positive deviance', ‘problem-driven iterative adaptation', and pockets of effectiveness theories. •  Why Erin is skeptical about the idea of changing civil service codes in Ghana. •  Erin's personal approach to effective bureaucratic management.     Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: https://www.chartercitiesinstitute.org/ (Charter Cities Institute) https://www.facebook.com/Charter-Cities-Institute-424204888015721/ (Charter Cities Institute on Facebook) https://twitter.com/CCIdotCity (Charter Cities Institute on Twitter) https://www.linkedin.com/company/charter-cities-institute/ (Charter Cities Institute on LinkedIn) https://sociology.nd.edu/people/erin-mcdonnell/ (Erin McDonnell) https://www.nd.edu/ (University of Notre Dame) https://www.amazon.com/Patchwork-Leviathan-Bureaucratic-Effectiveness-Developing-ebook/dp/B07XKFC7YF (Patchwork Leviathan)... RE-posted content from the Soulcation podcast Taking a break from "the way things have always been done"... could be your key to solving overwhelm, anxiety, and burnout.  And blazing your own path could give you the balance and freedom you crave. No one knows that process better than Erin Haztikostas, the latest guest on the Soulcation Podcast. Erin is former corporate CEO turned professional pot-stirrer: in other words, she was successful in traditional circumstances, then took a different path and created her own circumstances. She's now the founder of b Authentic inc, a career coach, TEDx speaker, and nationally published thought leader.   But before all that, she was itching for something new, she'd had great success as a corporate leader - but was craving more. "The epiphany I had is the same I teach time and time again", she said. "As I thought about the career and leadership space, and the reason I wasn't pursuing it was I didn't want to do it like everyone before. What I preach is don't not do something because you hate the way it was done before. You can actually do it your own way." That led to Erin developing her "strategic authenticity" framework - a way for corporate leaders to authentically lea their companies, without falling into the rut of the "way things have always been done," all while creating a healthier, happier work environment for employees. Authenticity is more than just "being yourself" - and Erin talks through her advice for how someone could tap into their own authenticity, and use it to jumpstart their life and career. We don't think of authenticity as anything more than simply being transparent. But it's so much more than that - and it could be your ticket to freedom, burnout recovery, and creating your own path in life. Listen in to hear more about Erin's story from corporate job to blazing her own path, what "strategic authenticity" actually is (and how you can use it in your own life), and how experimentation can help you determine your next move if you're ever feeling stuck. What You Will Learn: 3:35: Erin talks about her background as a CEO, her journey through corporate America, and when and why she started itching for something new. 6:40: The epiphany Erin had after her corporate career and how she teaches that same epiphany to her clients now 8:40: How Erin followed her intuition when leaving her job in the corporate world and what role experimentation played in that process 11:08: Erin explains how she defines the word "authenticity" 17:36: Erin describes how someone can connect with their own authenticity and who they truly are at their core 22:21: What "wall" Erin hits with her work now and how she moves past it 24:58: Erin explains what the "50 percent rule" is and how she applies it in her business 28:26: Erin describes a piece of her backstory that's allowed her the confidence to boldly express her opinions and to be authentic over traditional 31:51: Why Erin thinks the philosophy of "being yourself" isn't enough to truly live authentically 34:12: Erin gives advice for how someone could strategically use authenticity in their lives and their work 40:50 The six pillars of strategic authenticity that Erin writes about in her new book 44:02: The brain science and power being being "unexpected" Follow the soulcation movement @ If you like jammin' with us on the podcast, b sure to join us for more fun and inspiration! Interview with Carli Genet At some point in our adult lives, most of us have experienced a situation where we felt our emotional response was stronger than we anticipated. Ever wonder why that happened? In today’s episode, Erin sits down with Carli Genet, MSW, LICSW to unpack the concept of mental health healing by starting at the roots. If you’ve been here a minute, then you already know that the key to optimal health extends far beyond just diet and exercise. Erin and Carli discuss EMDR therapy, how and where memories are stored, big and small traumatic experiences, attachment styles and why tracing back to the roots for healing is often considered the emotional equivalent to functional nutrition work. If you’ve ever had an experience that triggers a stronger reaction than you thought it should, or notice certain situations seem to cause a stress response that you can’t easily shake off, then this is definitely an episode to tune into. Carli is a licensed clinical social worker in the state of NH and graduate of the UNH Masters in Social Work program. She chose to pursue a degree in social work because in addition to wanting to help people on individual levels, she has always been motivated to understand and effect change within larger powers at play. In fact, she often considers therapy to be a form of emotional activism. Carli offers individual, couples and intensive EMDR therapy for adults. She incorporates both physical and mental treatment modalities including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Eye Movement Desensitization (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Interventions, Motivational Interviewing, meditation, mindfulness and yoga. In this episode: -An experiment for when you’re feeling high strung [1:04] -Why Erin sought out EMDR therapy [4:54] -Carli’s approach to mental health healing, & what it means to start at the root [8:10] -Awareness: tracing back symptoms of stressors to find the root [12:40] -What exactly is EMDR & how it works [14:59] -How EMDR deepens your understanding of stressors and associated memories [18:15] -How memories are stored [22:05] -What it means to have support through trauma [25:35] -Attachment styles: the emotional equivalent to an immune system [28:51] -Parsing through burnout from self work and healing [34:33] -How therapy helps to maintain a connection to the Self [41:07] -A practice for finding a sense of your own Self [43:45] -The importance of doing due diligence in finding an appropriate therapist match for your needs [47:46] Resources mentioned: Organifi supplement powder (save 20% on your order with code FUNK) https://organifi.com/FUNK BioKult Boosted probiotic supplement (3/9/21: NEW CODE! save 15% off your entire order with code FUNK15) https://www.bio-kult.com/bio-kult-boosted/p9 Study: Biobehavioral responses to stress in females: tend-and-befriend, not fight-or-flight https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10941275/ Learn more about Carli’s work https://www.soulsnestcounseling.com/ Find Carli on Insta https://www.instagram.com/the.integrative.emdr.therapist/ Follow Erin on Insta https://www.instagram.com/the.funktional.nutritionist/ Related: -Episode 140: Somatic Healing & Breathwork -Episode 123: Creating Your Morning Ritual

“Maybe we place too much emphasis on the idea of what other people think a runner is.” After having her third baby, Erin Azar wasn't feeling like herself. So one day — having never run before — she decided to go outside and run a mile. From there, she committed to running a mile a day for 30 days straight, documenting her journey along the way. The result: Erin went viral on TikTok, with her first running video amassing more than one million views overnight. And when her mile-a-day month was up, she leveled up, and decided to train for and run her first marathon. Then, when said marathon was canceled due to the pandemic, she ran it anyway: virtually, and mostly alone. Erin is super honest about the realities of running being hard, especially for new runners. We continue our discussion with artists participating in Indivisible 2020 today with Anna Stump, Erin Yoshi, Ted Meyer, and Kalynn Campbell. In this jam-packed show, the guests address various pertinent social and political issues. We begin by hearing what indivisibility means to everyone, where Anna and Ted, who live in a rural, red part of the country share why they have chosen not to publicly express their political views. Both Erin and Kalynn feel that while indivisibility is possible and has been achieved at times, the current moment is deeply divided. We then talk about the rise of political discourse in popular culture and how the art reflective of this, such as Black Lives Matter murals and poster art, inspires our guests. We could not have a discussion about indivisibility without touching on the election, and we hear everyone’s take on Joe Biden as the candidate, why this election is more about voting against Trump than anything else, and how we might see the positives in the voter suppression tactics. Increasingly, people – particularly Gen Z, as Anna highlights – are becoming aware of the role they play in shaping society and are taking actionable steps to shift the narrative. We also touch on climate change, where the guests share their respective stark realizations they have had about this issue. As the show wraps up, we get a glimpse into the rationale behind the work everyone has submitted to Indivisible 2020. This insightful, powerful conversation left us with a sense of hope that artists have a big role to play in uniting our divided country. Tune in today to hear more!   Key Points From This Episode: What indivisible means to Anna and the difficulty she has living in a very red state. Why Anna and Ted feel unsafe to express their liberal political views where they live. The meaning of indivisibility to Erin and the work she feels needs to be done in this area. Moving away from the ‘oppression Olympics’ and seeing the humanity in everyone. Kalynn’s understanding of indivisibility and how he thinks we can work towards it. The inspiration Kalynn has drawn from the murals that have come from Black Lives Matter. Ted’s understanding of the ‘Other’ and its origins as a social construct. Why Erin is most inspired by poster art and murals over the recent years. Finding hope in troubled times – How Anna and Kalynn are digging deep in the current moment. How people who would have preferred Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren as the presidential candidate are choosing to vote. Erin’s empathy for people who feel frustrated with the Democratic Party. Hear Erin’s take on the Democratic Party’s strategy for choosing a center-right candidate like Biden. All the gerrymandering and voter suppression tactics are a sign that things are changing. Why Erin feels that hopelessness is a good sign and how it in turn makes her feel hopeful. Ted’s feeling at the Republican Party’s hypocrisy undoing the separation of church and state. The intersectionality of the social issues we face today. Erin’s experience of the orange sky in San Francisco during the wildfires. Anna, Ted, Kalynn, and Sourdough’s personal experience of climate change.  The hypocrisy of the ruling party given the fact that the military is preparing for climate change. Lessons in consuming less that we can take from the pandemic. Why Ted doesn’t have much faith in enduring long-term positive change post-pandemic. When Erin’s card was declined for a small coffee as the client walked through the door, she realized something had to give… Erin spent the next 3 years studying the habits of highly successful entrepreneurs, and ultimately developed a strategy to promote her value in a way that felt authentic, easy and FUN! She also started investing in real estate, which now affords her the opportunity to live her dream life, in her dream home. (It’s easier than you might think!) By 2012, she had gone from broke to 6 figures… and she promptly burned out. Erin had no systems in place to manage the growth and found herself trading her time for money. Pregnant with their second child, she was drowning in life and in business. She tried convincing herself to be “grateful” because they finally had money to pay the bills, but she was ready to throw in the towel altogether. Luckily, Erin didn’t quit! She sought help, built systems, and started hiring. By 2015, the business had doubled again. Today, their business continues to grow and Erin does much less in order to do much more. She focuses on the essentials and shows others how to do the same! What you will learn from this episode: Erin shares why she became self-employed, and she shares her powerful story of realizing she had to make changes to her strategy after hitting financial rock bottom How Erin’s limiting beliefs about money held her back from growing as an entrepreneur, and how she got past that roadblock Why Erin had to learn to accept that she deserved the success she earned for herself, and why finding the right coaching was the key to that realization Erin explains the difference between viewing money as “tangible” versus “intangible”, and how the way you view money impacts your goals Why eliminating financial stress and attaining financial freedom were Erin’s primary goals for herself and her family Why Erin chose to move into thought leadership and creating content through her writing and her podcast How Erin grew and scaled her business after realizing she couldn’t do everything by herself What the “25% rule” is and how it has helped Erin focus on the right priorities and guide her business strategy How Erin plans her day with a careful balance to help her maintain a positive level of energy throughout the day Why setting boundaries and staying present in the moment are important pillars of Erin’s success Resources: Instagram: @pursuingfreedomofficial Email: Erin@pursuingfreedom.com Website: www.pursuingfreedom.com Pursuing Freedom Podcast: www.pursuingfreedom.com/podcast Erin Bradley’s Live Workshop: www.pursuingfreedom.com/webinar Pursuing Freedom by Erin Bradley: https://amzn.to/2QnzeTW

Lightbulb Moment: Business Breakthroughs and Personal Discoveries with Becky Mollenkamp

Are you willing to “go against the flow” with your business model? It takes guts and pure resolve to make a leap into something new, especially with the common fear that it might not work like you anticipate. Today’s show introduces you to someone who has proven that trying something new might be just the thing your business needs.  Erin Kelly learned the hard way that there are other ways to sell beyond cyclical (and stressful) launches. In the online space, people often default to launching as the only way, but Erin learned that relationship marketing and smart offers can create daily cash flow. That realization was a huge weight off her shoulders and it eliminated that feeling of failure when a big launch goes badly. She says there are still reasons you might want to invest in a launch strategy, but it doesn't have to be the ONLY way you sell in your business—and it truly shouldn't be.   Erin Kelly is the co-founder of MemberVault, a relationship marketing platform disrupting how we look at selling and engaging online using engagement tracking, gamification strategies, and a binge & buy marketplace for your free and paid products. Grab your forever free account at membervault.co.   More in this episode:   Before her lightbulb moment, Erin was an Online Business Manager who managed launches for many of her clients After a huge affiliate launch that didn’t go well, she came away with a new way of thinking called “relationship marketing” Why she wanted to treat her audience “like the humans they are,” without false scarcity and slimy sales tactics Doing launches differently means that clients can buy when THEY are ready, instead of being pressured when they aren’t Relationship marketing means showing up on a regular basis in different formats, being clear about giving value, and letting the audience buy whey they’re ready Examples of others who are doing relationship marketing well: Amanda Bond, Scott Olford, Greg Hickman, and Ash Ambridge The biggest fear about making the leap was letting go of the illusion that a big launch can bring in a six-figure income in a seven-day launch For MemberVault, this approach looks like daily email with support packages with a focus on value and making it easy to buy How writing a daily email takes the pressure off and breaks the information into small, consumable chunks---and how it’s resonating with Erin’s audience For some, daily emails wouldn’t work well, so they use Facebook Live or Facebook Ads instead Why Erin plans an upcoming experiment with paid Facebook Ads There is no magic formula for relationship marketing success. “Open your curiosity and find what works well for you and your audience.” Be open to testing things out and see how they resonate with your audience How relationship marketing has improved Erin’s life: “It’s made me more connected to my audience, less stressed, and always inspired and creating.” Planning a big launch with lots of energy output would weigh Erin down (especially since she’s expecting her second child), but relationship marketing helps better manage a work/life balance The benefits of daily emails are being able to batch information, not having to have revenue deadlines, and being more relaxed What people can learn about relationship marketing: “It’s a tough mindset switch and a longer sales cycle. It’s not the crazy urgency of a launch, but a more consistent flow of income.”   Erin’s links: Website: https://membervault.co/ FB page: https://www.facebook.com/membervault   Mentions:   Amanda Bond: http://theadstrategist.com/   Scott Olford: http://scottoldford.com/   Greg Hickman of System.ly: http://system.ly/   Ash Ambridge of the Middle Finger Project: https://www.themiddlefingerproject.org/

My guest today is Erin Weed. After a tragic death of a friend, Erin founded Girls Fight Back! A women’s self-defense and personal safety organization. Erin traveled the U.S. speaking on college campuses and keeping the memory of her murdered friend alive through awareness. Erin wouldn’t consider herself an entrepreneur, but an activist that built a business out of her passion project. During today’s episode, Erin tells me about the growth of Girls Fight Back and how she was able to take the business internationally. She also shares why she made the decision to sell the company and move on to the next stage of her life. Businesses can easily become the cornerstone of someone’s identity or purpose. Erin’s story is a great example of out-growing a business and knowing when to let it go. What you will learn about: Why Erin founded Girls Fight Back. How partnerships with martial art and self-defense programs helped get Erin her audience. The personal effect her friend’s death had on Erin. How Girls Fight Back became international. How Erin structured one of her seminars and presentations. What exactly did Erin sell to her buyer? The danger of letting your business become your identity. The process Erin went through to sell her business. The personal changes she went under during this process. Mistakes that Erin made early on in the business. Erin’s new business Evoso and her DIG process. Erin’s advice to our listeners. What are you passionate about in your life? What social issues ring near and dear to your heart? What if a past tragedy is the exact impetus you need to get your enterprise up and running? Today’s guest shows us exactly how you can be both a social justice warrior and still run a cash-positive business. Erin Weed talks about making a legacy out of her friend’s tragic murder by building a business devoted to helping women live a life without fear where they can defend themselves if necessary and have the tools they need to succeed. What has your business done for others today? Enterprise by Surprise So many entrepreneurs don’t choose this path. Most fall into entrepreneurship by accident. If there’s an exposed market niche or an under-serviced segment, you can bet an entrepreneur will find a way to fulfill that need. One trend we don’t see enough of is businesses that are created to help a social issue or injustice get resolved. Today’s guest did exactly that: created a business to resolve a social injustice (women who live life in fear that they will be attacked and therefore pass on major life opportunities that their male peers do not have to due to considerations of personal safety). In Erin’s own words, “Girls Fight Back gives women’s safety and self defense seminars at high schools and colleges across the world. We also have a product line that all supports that messaging.” So not only did she establish a business that would help thousands of women across the globe, but she also managed to make it a profitable business that could be sold to another like-minded ‘activist entrepreneur’. The lesson here is that you never know who has been affected by a tragedy like yours and who could benefit from your healing process. While Erin has extrapolated this experience and grew beyond her initial need to be

Erin Flynn has mastered something we've ALL encountered at one time or another... how to deal with nightmare clients. Not only does she help you grow your freelance business but how about how to handle those clients that make you want to quit what you're doing? (Kinda makes you want to send her a virtual hug already, doesn't it?). I was fortunate to connect to Erin through a mutual friend, Curtis McHale (who I had on the podcast a couple months ago). Erin does a lot more than just help you deal with nightmare clients (although of course, that was one of the things I had to delve deeper into. We've ALL been there and have that crazy story of working with someone that made our lives a living hell). Erin has built up her own business (design and websites) and is growing it through a membership program (which she has a free membership also) and courses. I love it. Erin has been involved in web design since she was 13 and building Sailor Moon fan sites (the beauty of growing up with technology, huh?). After college, she went out and got a job (like we're all 'supposed' to do) and ended up hating it. She hated it so much that she literally just quit one day (something I know many people would love to be able to do). Fortunately, she's figured out the freelancing space and is sharing her knowledge and skills with other people so you can avoid some of the mistakes she's made. She's now transitioning to an agency and has tons of training available to help you grow your business and position yourself as an expert. Questions I Asked Erin I always want to know what led someone down the entrepreneurial path. Have you always worked for yourself? What brought you here? What is your current business? You have courses & workshops, did you start with services? Let's talk about Nightmare Clients. What made you decide to offer help with this? I love the "screen, prevent, fire"... can you explain what that is? You also have a membership for growing your business. Can you share a little bit about the Unstoppable Expedition? What would you recommend to someone who wants to start a membership? What's on the horizon for you this year? What You're Going to Learn How Erin approaches everything in her business How a conversation on Twitter turned into a community on Facebook How her communication skills led to her first product that sold a few hundred right out the gate Why positioning yourself as the expert is key when starting a new project Why Erin thinks you should work with a couple nightmare clients (hint: boundaries) Where to Connect with Erin Website | Twitter | Facebook
