We've got the Lutherans to thank for this one. It's the worst-ever name for a musical, but Peter & Nathan think that 2001's Urinetown, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann & Greg Kotis, is worthy of your attention – and some sustained theological reflection. _________________________________________ We talk about: The show's origin story (thanks, Lutherans!) and its unfortunately timed Broadway debut on the heels of 9/11. The politics of Urinetown – capitalist overlords versus the people's revolution, all painted in broad, satirical brushstrokes. Are there any responsible political figures in this show? What is Urinetown? A prison for malefactors? A way for the powerful to prey on the vulnerable? Death? Despair? "Following your heart" – What does that mean? And what if whatever your heart seems to be telling you turns out to be wrong? The power of music (particularly Gospel music) to move us to action. Who "should" be singing this music, and who is it for? You'll hear: "Too Much Exposition" / "What is Urinetown?" – satirical take-downs of conventional musical theatre tropes "I See A River" / "Run Freedom, Run" / "Follow Your Heart" – Urinetown asks some complicated questions about love and justice. And the music is pretty dang good. You'll hear Hunter Foster, John Cullum, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Jeff McCarthy, Spencer Kayden and the Original Broadway Cast from the 2001 recording. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! As a young kid, he originally wanted to be a novelist. A audition for a high school production of Bye Bye Birdie landed him the lead role of Conrad, which blasted open the doors for him in the acting world. He ended up going to University of Michigan when they were first beginning to make a name for themselves as one of the best places to learn the craft, and then found his way easily onto the Broadway stage. He ended up shifting focus about 8 years ago to directing, where he found what he describes as his new passion for the stage. A quick call from an old friend led him to step in and perform as Clark Griswold in The Griswolds' Broadway Vacation brought him back to the stage, originating the role in the world premiere at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington, alongside Kate Rockwell. Hunter is an actor, director, writer and librettist with Broadway acting credits including Little Shop of Horrors (which earned him a Tony Award nomination), Urinetown, The Producers, Footloose, Les Miserables and Grease. He was named 2018's director of the year by the Wall Street Journal for his productions of 42nd Street at the Bucks County Playhouse, and The Drowsy Chaperone at the Goodspeed Opera House, recently directed the critically acclaimed The Other Josh Cohen off Broadway here in NYC, is the Artistic Director for the Redhouse Arts Center in Syracuse, NY, and as we speak is originating the role of Clark Griswold in the Griswolds' Broadway Vacation. This week we conducted our first interview with our good friend Hunter Foster who over the course of a little over a year lost over ONE HUNDRED POUNDS while adhering to the keto diet. We listen to Foster's story, ask questions about safety, side effects, whether he believes the hype is justified and delve into what some of the research says about keto, another popular, low carb diet.
In this week's episode, Noelle and Fiona speak with Hunter Foster, an amazing dancer/performer based in LA. They dive into hilarious chats about his new life in California, as well as his most recent and exciting experiences in the dance industry! Hunter brings amazing energy to the podcast and leaves both hosts crying with laughter. In addition, Noelle and Fiona give you a blast from their past as they reminisce on their time together in middle school and all the shenanigans that occurred back in the day. We apologize if the audio sounds off this week. We experienced some technical difficulties.

Sheer star power. Dresden clings to the 1980's, Elsie has everyone in absolute stitches with a story some of us have already seen, and everyone enjoys an improvised Oscar-Winning Moment! Hugely talented Broadway star Jen Cody (Urinetown, The Wild Party, Shrek, Pajama Game, and many more), film (Charlotte La Bouff in Disney's “The Princess and the Frog") and TV (Winx Club, Blue Bloods, The Good Fight, and many more), is also the 2nd Vice President of Actor's Equity Association and married to actor Hunter Foster. Jen hilariously tells all about learning comedy from the greats such as watching Sally Struthers tinker meticulously with the timing of a bit; the commitment it takes to be an actor, with all the hardships that come with the job; the professionalism it takes to perform 8 shows a week; and reflecting on getting her first big role, an unlikely role she somehow keeps playing, behind the scenes secrets, and the moment she knew she real was funny. She has been a regular presence in numerous Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights Aids fundraisers and has enjoyed great success as a voiceover artist, most notably as Charlotte La Bouff in Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog." www.jen-cody.comCocktails at Table 7- Inside New York’s Joe Allen is produced and hosted by Jason Woodruff, Dana Mierlak, and Sean Kent, with music by James Rubio and logo and artwork design by Christina D’Angelo. Kim David Smith has been described variously by The Wall Street Journal as ‘slyly subversive’ and Broadway World as the ‘David Bowie of Cabaret’. The New York Times labelled Smith as the ‘male Marlene Dietrich’. All are appropriate labels and signal Smith as a cabaret performer of incredible ability, nuance and sensuality.Departing Australia, he headed for New York City and promptly established himself as a cabaret artist of note. He crafted deft performances that celebrated the glitter, doom and decadence of 1920’s Berlin in his show Morphium Kabarett.Smith’s piano-based program, Morphium Kabarett, provides an intimate evening of German, French, and English repertoire, with many unexpected twists. Smith has toured Morphium Kabarett throughout Australia, earning a 2015 Helpmann Award nomination for “Best Cabaret Performer,” while also enjoying performances in the NYC at Joe’s Pub, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Café Sabarsky at the Neue Galerie. His cabaret style explores a repertoire of popular tunes and European song in an approach that is inspired by Weimar-era artistry. The fusion provides unique and intoxicating renderings of Minogue, Madonna and Marlene. He is masterful at bringing fresh interpretation to the repertoire of Piaf, Hollaender, and Weill.Kim David Smith’s most recent cabaret programs Mostly Marlene and A Wery Weimar Christmas debuted at Club Cumming in New York, while Kim Sings Kylie premiered at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theatre in 2018, saluting perennial pop goddess Kylie Minogue in an intimate cabaret fantasia. Kim Sings Kylie has since been performed at the inaugural Sydney Cabaret Festival.Kim starred as Salomé in Oscar Wilde’s classic and controversial play at the Provincetown Theatre, and has also portrayed the Emcee in Hunter Foster’s production of Cabaret at the Cape Playhouse. He recently released his new album Kim David Smith: Live at Joe’s Pub. It is available on digital and streaming platforms and as a physical CD. More information at KimDavidSmith.comKim joined Stages for a long overdue catch-up. LEO ASH EVENS is a Pittsburgh born and bred actor with a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Upon signing with his legit agents, CGF Talent defined him as "an enigma". A dynamic song and dance man as well as voice-over artist, signing with Innovative Artists in 2012, Leo enagages his sexy rasp for both rock ’n roll and commercial voice-overs. Currently, he is the voice of Siemens Technology. In his 10th year with MTCA (Musical Theatre College Auditions), Leo has evolved from monologue coach to Assistant Director and is now a proud Co-Director and Co-Owner of the team with partners Ellen Lettrich (Founder), and Charlie Murphy. Leo loves guiding his students to trust their own work and their process, finding the right program and positioning themselves for success in the professional world. Broadway credits: Jesus Christ Superstar (debut); Shuffle Along…(standby for Brooks Ashmanskas, and later taking over the role) directed by George C. Wolfe, choreographed by Savion Glover; and the vacation swing for School of Rock, where he channeled a touch of David Bowie, Rod Stewart, and Jem of Jem and the Holograms in his spiky blonde wig. Leo's proudest role to date is the Emcee in Cabaret, winning Best Actor in the Houston Excellence Awards while performing at Houston TUTS. Leo later reprised his role at The Arvada Center in Denver, Colorado. It's the gritty roles that really ignite him. And in a close second place - playing the deliciously deplorable Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher. Leo’s had the honor of working with theatre legends Chita Rivera, Patti LuPone, Shirley Jones, and Audra McDonald. He treasured the world premiere play, Somewhere, starring Priscilla Lopez, at The Old Globe in San Diego, in which he originated the role of Jamie McRea. Off-Broadway, Leo originated roles in two premiere plays which have since successfully been published. Bobby in Finks by Joe Gilford and Pluto in Jasper in Deadland by Hunter Foster and Ryan Scott Oliver. Leo played Riff in West Side Story several times: for Alan Johnson (50th Anniversary Tour); Joey McNeely (London); as well as for Joshua Bergasse (Gypsy of The Year, Recording Academy Honors, Barrington Stage, and North Carolina Theatre). He is thrilled to be part of this legacy and pass it on through educational workshops. Maybe he'll even try his hand at directing it one day... Showbiz highlight: In 2016, Leo met his idol, The Great Lady of Comedy - Carol Burnett, after her show at The Beacon Theatre in NYC. Inspired by her hilarious, honest, and wry characters, he always admires her compassionate way of sharing herself with her audiences. Leo is the proud son of Earl and Amy, brother of Sarah, and Uncle of Violet! (He's gonna post some Instagram duos of himself and Violet soon - she'll steal your heart!) He gleaned his green thumb from his parents, and hence, time with his house plants, the community garden, and lush walks in Central Park near his apartment on the Upper West Side are a must! Someday soon, Leo wants to adopt a Wheaten Terrier. Hello again! It's been a little while. We'd apologize but this seems to be pretty normal for us. In this episode we watch The Astronaut and the Ballerina. Megan 2's cat tries to attack her with a Bloody Mary, we complain about how Sutton and Hunter Foster have too much talent for one family, and discuss how wonderful it is that ASP is finally getting the recognition she deserves. Better late than never! As always you can contact us through Facebook (Stumbling Ballerinas), Twitter (@drunkballet), tumblr (stumblingballerinas), or gmail (stumblingballerinas@gmail.com). Kelli O'Hara, Broadway star of The Bridges of Madison County joins host Robin Milling backstage at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York City. Kelli tells Robin her dressing room is decorated with photographic inspirations to put her into the mindset of Francesca like a map of Italy, an 18th century Italian sketch, as well as a picture of the actual Rosamund Bridge in Iowa where Robert (played by Steven Pasquale) and Francesa meet. Born in Oklahoma on a farm where she chopped cotton and was the 'official lawn girl'; she and her sister would harmonize through the aisles of the cotton fields ironically singing 'Love Could Build A Bridge.' Kelli could tap into Francesca's farm life, but slipping into her lilting Neopolitan accent combined with a bit of Americana happens when she says 'Francesa,' puts on a brown wig over her blonde locks, darkens her eyebrows and wears a farmwife's dress. She also has a ritual on her walk to the stage of reading all the signs on the wall in her accent like, 'stage right,' or 'no toaster ovens please!' Having a new addition to the family and loving relationship with her husband, Greg Naughton enriches her with love and emotion which she brings into the role of Francesca. She says, “I don't think I could've played this role without having what's going on in my personal life right now. You come to a place in your life where everything is just at the right time.” Click here for your free audiobook www.audibletrial.com/millingabout Photos courtesy of Joan Marcus

"Ordinary Days"' Hunter Foster talks about performing a musical in such an intimate space (Roundabout Underground's black box) and why the unusually close proximity makes the audience into the fifth character in this new work. He also talks about his discovery of musicals in high school; his steady and successful acting gigs right after high school and why despite them he chose to enroll at the University of Michigan; how he came to New York not long after graduation and almost immediately got offers for a national tour of "Cats" and "Grease" on Broadway -- managing to take them both; how much he had to learn about discipline and professionalism while touring in "Cats"; how he kept himself challenged during more than three years (on and off) with "Grease"; his retrospective admiration for the musical "Footloose" -- where he received the famed "gypsy robe" because he was the company's ensemble veteran before turning 30; his complete surprise at the success of "Urinetown", which he joined beginning with its Off-Broadway incarnation at the American Theatre of Actors, and at finding himself sharing a stage with John Cullum; how he managed to get cast in the play "The Government Inspector" at The Guthrie Theatre when he was not a member of the company and best known for musicals; and his own work as a writer of musicals and plays, including "Summer of '42" and "Bonnie and Clyde: A Folk Tale" -- and whether he ever intends to write a role for himself. Original air date - December 7, 2009.
