In this episode Mike, Rich and Steve tackle five main releases - as usual, click the link to check out the trailers for each film! We kick off with POOLMAN (Signature Entertainment), starring, directed by and co-written by Chris Pine. Check out our review to find out if its worth a watch! Set on the US/Mexican border, DEADLAND (Lightbulb Film Distribution) follows a conflicted Border Patrol officer dealing with a mysterious dead body and the sudden appearance of his estranged father. THE LAST BREATH (Signature Entertainment) is the latest entry into the Shark Attack genre, as some old college friends become trapped inside the wreck of WW2 battleship, surrounded by sharks! Director James Bamford had already proved himself to be a decent DTV director with Airforce One Down. JADE (101 Films) doubles down on that, making him a director to look out for and serves up a new action star, Shaina West! Going straight to Netflix, AXEL F is exactly the nostalgia piece you'd expect. Check out our review to see whether we enjoyed it! Our Short Shot this week is THE BAKU - click the link to see the whole 30min short. Former Power Ranger Jonny Yong Bosch made the excellent short Ark Exitus a few years back, so we were eagerly anticipating his latest film! Finally, our DTV Throwback is REPTILIAN, aka Reptile 2001, aka Yongary. This is a Korean produced Kaiju, featuring a giant dinosaur resurrected by invading aliens. You have to dig hard, but it is available on Prime and other locations. Follow the Short Shots on X (formerly Twitter) where you will find hundreds of links to awesome short films! Don't forget to also check out our main show, the DTV DIGEST on X and FACEBOOK!
Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! On this week's show we bring you reviews of The Exorcism, starring Oscar winning actor, Russel Crowe (The Gladiator), as a washed up actor playing a priest in an exorcist movie. Interestingly, this isn't Crowe's first foray into the priest/horror genre, having already starred in The Pope's Exorcist. Check out the show for what we thought. Then, we talk about Deadland, a supernatural/ghost story set on the US/Mexico border. With a strong cast, and gorgeous cinematography, Deadland has a deeper message underlying its main themes of immigration, racism and trauma. Check out the show for more. On Anniversary Corner we look back at Deliver Us From Evil (2014). If that's not enough for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. The Quran speaks of the miraculous power of rain to bring a dead land back to life. Rain is essential for living things, and also has a fertilizing property that brings elements and mineral salts necessary for plants to grow. Rain provides 150 million tons of fertilizer every year and is essential for the balance of life. This is just one of the many miraculous properties of the Quran.
Scott sits down with a former student, Alyssa Carol, for a heartfelt and lovely conversation about Alyssa's pathway towards higher education at the University of Michigan's famed Musical Theatre BFA and making her Broadway debut as an original Broadway cast member in Andrew Lloyd Webber's brand new musical, BAD CINDERELLA. And while in many ways Alyssa is living what from the outside looks to be a Broadway Cinderella story… she comes to the podcast to share her personal journey to this moment to highlight the fact that the road to Broadway is rarely glamorous or picture book perfect, but this journey is often a deeply satisfying, valuable and artistically illuminating process. Alyssa Carol is a performing artist originally from Orange County, CA. She grew up dancing, singing and acting and eventually attended the Orange County School of the Arts to study Musical Theatre from 7th-12th grade where she discovered a deeper sense of her artistry and the cathartic nature of performing. And I had the privilege to be her conservatory director for her junior and senior year at OCSA. She is currently completing her last semester at The University of Michigan in their BFA Musical Theatre program remotely from NYC… so that she could join the original cast as a swing of the Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's BAD CINDERELLA covering 9 tracks and triumphantly made her Broadway debut during previews on March 9th. At the University of Michigan she was featured in productions of The House of Bernarda Alba, Hair, Michael McElroy's Sonnets, Soliloquies and Soul, The Wild Party; she made her professional debut as the female swing in The Ogunquit Playhouse staging of The Nutty Professor; At OCSA, she played Charity in SWEET CHARITY, Olive in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, was in the ensemble of OCSA's productions of Jasper in Deadland, Footloose as an Associate Choreographer (with Emily Baggerly) on an epic production of EVITA. On a personal note, Alyssa is a light in this world and a ferocious quadruple threat - actor, dancer, singer AND creative/maker. She is a wonderful example of leading with the love of an artform, and practicing that abundant mindset at every turn of the creative process. In this episode, we talk about the many facets of her talent and creative interest; what helped her be her authentic self in audition settings; How she decided to say YES to a school like University of Michigan; And a touching story of being guided by the legendary Broadway dancer and choreographer, Ann Reinking, just weeks before her passing. We're back! The finale of Wire in the Blood is a densely-packed episode. We end up talking about parallel universes (TV show vs Books). The TV series gives us some hope for Tony (after some therapy); the books so far will never give us that for Carol and Tony.
John D. Liu started his career as a journalist and cameraman, covering politics, economics, and culture. In 1995, he began documenting the Loess Plateau in China, a massive landscape that had been destroyed by poor agriculture practices over the course of centuries. He watched and filmed as the landscape––and the people––came back to vibrant life over decades, through an intensive process that involved soil science, engineering, hydrological restoration, and the participation of local communities. The result was a living, lush, and sustainable ecosystem that produced more food with less land in agricultural production.

Charge your sigils, light your candles, and throw some salt over your shoulder because Halle and guest host Lex @thewellreadlex are back to talk about Lovely Bad Things by Trisha Wolfe! While deep diving into this delicious psychological thriller dark romance, the ladies take on Nietzsche, serial killers, the occult, and ritualistic sex. *insert big eyes emoji* And of course, they get into THAT ritual scene that Lex calls a "make or break scene" for friendship before sharing their own theories on who they think is the killer, what they hope to see in book two, and their thoughts on if Halen really is the "sane" one in the relationship. The episode ends with Lex explaining what all she's learned from her friendship with Halle and Halle sharing the latest drama happening at Deadland - the haunted house attraction behind her house. **It is advised to check all trigger warning for this book before reading or listening to this episode**
In this episode, I chat with Rachel Aukes about flying with her 50 lb lap dog and how she approached getting know despite being an introvert. Andi and Lise are super-stoked to have the Queen of Lesbian Romance, Karin Kallmaker, on the show to talk about the evolution and history of F/F fiction, how it's crossing over into “mainstream” publishing and what that means for representation, for publishing, and the F/F publishing industry that's been here all along. Karin is a multiple award-winning author who published her first novel in 1989 and has been going strong ever since. She has also worked as an editor in the lesfic publishing industry, so she's been on both sides of the publishing fence. Find Karin on Twitter: @kallmaker And at her website: kallmaker.com Shout-outs: Lise started watching Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max and says it's a fab rom-com in pirate days with all kinds of rep and go watch it right away. Karin just got Sara Paretsky's latest release in the detective V.I. Warchawski novels, Dead Land, and she's looking forward to reading that. She also recommends the movie The Lost City, lots of belly laughs. Andi has started the gardening thing and has some tomato seedlings. Plus, she's making candles.
Mariupol is 'ashes of a dead land' - Εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες είναι οι εγκλωβισμένοι κάτοικοι στην Μαριούπολη την στιγμή που η Δύση εξετάζει νέες κυρώσεις στη Μόσχα. Παράλληλα, ο ρωσικός στρατός έχει «κολλήσει» στα 32 χιλιόμετρα από το Κίεβο, ενώ παράλληλα αγνοείται δημοσιογράφος που έπεσε πάνω σε μάχη.
One “dead claim” land deed in The Walking Dead Gala game made them over $20 million. Inflation is much, much worse than you thought. Bonnie Milligan and I simply don’t trust the Disney character Aladdin. And BOY do we make sure to talk about it. Bonnie, of course, is known for her work on stage in musicals such as Kinky Boots, and Jasper In Deadland, but did you know that she was raised in a doublewide trailer? Bonnie made huge waves on Broadway originating the role of Pamela in the musical Head Over Heels, but I can almost guarantee that you didn’t know that she is an expert sandwich orderer! This was one of my favorite episodes to record because I’ve known and loved Bonnie for a long time and I finally got to sit with her and talk about EVERYTHING from her childhood to her journey to Broadway, Bonnie Milligan is a super star and she is full of surprises! Tune in for one hell of a good time! And don’t forget to rate and subscribe!!! LEO ASH EVENS is a Pittsburgh born and bred actor with a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. Upon signing with his legit agents, CGF Talent defined him as "an enigma". A dynamic song and dance man as well as voice-over artist, signing with Innovative Artists in 2012, Leo enagages his sexy rasp for both rock ’n roll and commercial voice-overs. Currently, he is the voice of Siemens Technology. In his 10th year with MTCA (Musical Theatre College Auditions), Leo has evolved from monologue coach to Assistant Director and is now a proud Co-Director and Co-Owner of the team with partners Ellen Lettrich (Founder), and Charlie Murphy. Leo loves guiding his students to trust their own work and their process, finding the right program and positioning themselves for success in the professional world. Broadway credits: Jesus Christ Superstar (debut); Shuffle Along…(standby for Brooks Ashmanskas, and later taking over the role) directed by George C. Wolfe, choreographed by Savion Glover; and the vacation swing for School of Rock, where he channeled a touch of David Bowie, Rod Stewart, and Jem of Jem and the Holograms in his spiky blonde wig. Leo's proudest role to date is the Emcee in Cabaret, winning Best Actor in the Houston Excellence Awards while performing at Houston TUTS. Leo later reprised his role at The Arvada Center in Denver, Colorado. It's the gritty roles that really ignite him. And in a close second place - playing the deliciously deplorable Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher. Leo’s had the honor of working with theatre legends Chita Rivera, Patti LuPone, Shirley Jones, and Audra McDonald. He treasured the world premiere play, Somewhere, starring Priscilla Lopez, at The Old Globe in San Diego, in which he originated the role of Jamie McRea. Off-Broadway, Leo originated roles in two premiere plays which have since successfully been published. Bobby in Finks by Joe Gilford and Pluto in Jasper in Deadland by Hunter Foster and Ryan Scott Oliver. Leo played Riff in West Side Story several times: for Alan Johnson (50th Anniversary Tour); Joey McNeely (London); as well as for Joshua Bergasse (Gypsy of The Year, Recording Academy Honors, Barrington Stage, and North Carolina Theatre). He is thrilled to be part of this legacy and pass it on through educational workshops. Maybe he'll even try his hand at directing it one day... Showbiz highlight: In 2016, Leo met his idol, The Great Lady of Comedy - Carol Burnett, after her show at The Beacon Theatre in NYC. Inspired by her hilarious, honest, and wry characters, he always admires her compassionate way of sharing herself with her audiences. Leo is the proud son of Earl and Amy, brother of Sarah, and Uncle of Violet! (He's gonna post some Instagram duos of himself and Violet soon - she'll steal your heart!) He gleaned his green thumb from his parents, and hence, time with his house plants, the community garden, and lush walks in Central Park near his apartment on the Upper West Side are a must! Someday soon, Leo wants to adopt a Wheaten Terrier. Sara Paretsky is a modern American author of detective fiction. Paretsky was raised in Kansas, and graduated from the state university with a degree in political science. She did community service work on the south side of Chicago in 1966 and returned in 1968 to work there. She ultimately completed a Ph.D. in history at the University of Chicago, entitled The Breakdown of Moral Philosophy in New England Before the Civil War, and finally earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. She has lived in Chicago since 1968.The protagonist of all but two of Paretsky's novels is V.I. Warshawski, a female private investigator. Warshawski's eclectic personality defies easy categorization. She drinks Johnnie Walker Black Label, breaks into houses looking for clues, and can hold her own in a street fight, but also she pays attention to her clothes, sings opera along with the radio, and enjoys her sex life.Paretsky is credited with transforming the role and image of women in the crime novels.Chicago may be the city of broad shoulders, but its political law is “Pay to Play.” Money changes hands in the middle of the night, and by morning, buildings and parks are replaced by billion-dollar projects.DEAD LAND - Chicago PI V.I. Warshawski gets pulled into one of these clandestine deals through her impetuous goddaughter, Bernie Fouchard. Bernie tries to rescue Lydia Zamir, a famed singer-songwriter now living on the streets; Zamir’s life fell apart when her lover was murdered next to her in a mass shooting at an outdoor concert. Not only does Bernie plunge her and V.I. headlong into the path of some ruthless developers, they lead to the murder of the young man Bernie is dating. He’s a computer geek working for a community group called SLICK.V.I. is desperate to find a mysterious man named Coop, who roams the lakefront in the middle of the night with his dog. She’s sure he holds the key to the mounting body count within SLICK. Coop may even know why an international law firm is representing the mass murderer responsible for Lydia’s lover’s death. Instead, the detective finds a terrifying conspiracy stretching from Chicago’s parks to a cover-up of the dark chapters in America’s meddling in South American politics. Before she finds answers, this electrifying novel pushes V.I. close to the breaking point: People who pay to play take no prisoners.Liz Decker is the owner of Caprichos Books an independent book store in Bel Air, Maryland. These are trying times for small business owners. Liz shares how she is coping and finding ways to to keep the book store a vital part of downtown Bel Air.
Guest presenter, Elizabeth Perry, aka E.C Reads on Instagram talks to Sara Paretsky about the food moments in Dead Land, the latest in the series to feature her private detective V.I. Warshawski. When Indemnity Only, the first, was published in 1982, Paretsky revolutionised the genre with this tough-talking female private eye, and in 2002 won the Cartier Diamond Dagger for lifetime achievement. Elizabeth has been reading her since she was 14 and admits that she is massive nerd-level fan. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Chicago is the city of broad shoulders, but V.I. Warshawski knows its politics: 'Pay to Play'. Money changes hands in the middle of the night; by morning, buildings and parks have been replaced by billion-dollar projects. Private investigator V.I. gets pulled into one of these clandestine deals when her impetuous goddaughter Bernie tries to rescue a famed singer-songwriter, now living on the streets. Thanks to Bernie, V.I. finds herself in the path of some developers whose negotiating strategy is simple: they bulldoze - or kill - any obstacle in their way. Questions pile up almost as fast as the dead bodies. When she tries to answer them, the detective finds a terrifying conspiracy stretching from Chicago's parks to a cover-up of the dark chapters in the American government's interference in South American politics. Before finds answer, V.I. will be pushed closed to breaking point. People who pay to play take no prisoners.

SPOILERS FOR ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. In this episode: At long last, our discussion of the 1975 cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show, including Tim Curry, the stellar soundtrack, the obtuse plot, and its place as a cultural phenomenon. This is take two of this episode, so much like with our Sweeney episode, we try to hit on points we did the first time we recorded while keeping the conversation alive and organic. To...mixed results. Seriously, though, the soundtrack kicks ass, even if Ian's a little perplexed at how all of these songs came together. We talk about how we first saw Rocky Horror. Ian watched it with his Dad, which probably wasn't weird at all, and then ended up seeing a shadowcast performance at college. Fio's girlfriend made him go see it in high school. The production values, sets, casting, etc. of this film are pretty great, but watching it on its own, you don't really get the full experience. We talk about other horror musicals we haven't discussed during this series, putting the spotlight on The Devil's Carnival and Jasper in Deadland. THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM: Again, apologies for the lateness of the episode and a potentially less-than-comprehensive discussion, due to this being a re-record. Technology was working against us for this one. From Fio: My bad, Superman doesn't reprogram the population of Transilvane by playing westerns, he specifically does it by playing them Oklahoma! So this fits into our musical theme! Here's a link to the Decemberists/Silent Hill song parody Ian wrote (MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SILENT HILL 2): "James Hymn" Music: "This is My Design" - Ian Doherty | SoundCloud | Bandcamp | "Time Warp" - The Rocky Horror Picture Show | YouTube | Amazon | "Science Fiction / Double Feature" - The Rocky Horror Picture Show | YouTube | Amazon | "Planet Schmanet Janet" - The Rocky Horror Picture Show | YouTube | Amazon | "Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me" - The Rocky Horror Picture Show | YouTube | Amazon | http://archive.org/download/AMOT096/AMOT096.mp3
