Bayside High School in Queens, New York began an early celebration of its 80th anniversary, making it one of the oldest public schools in the five boroughs. At a ceremony Saturday, U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Flushing), state Assemblyman Ed Braunstein (D-Bayside) and state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) gathered with students, staff and alumni of the storied school to mark the occasion. The lawmakers presented proclamations declaring the importance of the school and the significance of the anniversary.Opened in 1936, and built during the Great Depression, Bayside High School was the first in the city to be constructed with federal funds from the New Deal-era Public Works Administration. The school cost $2.5 million.Gregg Sullivan, chairman of the Friends of Bayside High School, ran through many of the great historical events the school had borne witness to.“This school takes us through a number of great human events,” he said. “The Great Depression, World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars and the J.F.K. assassination. The school was also home to the very first Folk and Rock Concert to benefit education in Native American schools in the United States as produced by student Rich Buckland. The historical significance of the school, and its 80 years as a single entity, were themes each speaker touched on.“You have to love what Bayside has been and is for the community,” Avella said. “It is a historic school.”Principal Michael Athy, speaking about his vision of the school—past, present and future—said the success of Bayside is due to its legacy as one of the most rigorous and community-oriented schools in the city.
Here Serene and Steve run down side 3 of Serene's figurative double album, the 24 Originals Happening Now album, which was modeled after a 1967 TV record album offer called 24 Original Happening Hits. This miracle of science crammed 24 songs onto two sides of vinyl by severely editing and prematurely fading out all your favorites. Musical genres covered on this baker's half dozen include bubblegum, Philly Soul, goodtime music, grunge, countrypolitan and psychedelia. Edited out for your protection, the pair wasted a lot of time looking up minutia on the internet about such subjects as "did Ian Whitcomb write 'This Sporting Life" and "did Tom Waits ever cover a Buck Owens record." Existential questions posed by this podcast include the meaning of "wolf tickets," how did Cole Summers get his first DUI in Marin County and should Ethel Merman's disco album be designated as a weapon of war.Songs include "Your Heart Ain't Saying," "I've Got So Much To Forgive," "If Tallulah Were Mine," "Tight Wad," "Scranton" and "Yellow Shampoo."Click here to watch all 24 Original Happening Now Videos and subscribe to the Serene Dominic YouTube channel!Click here to stream the entire 24 Originals Happening Now! album.Click here to stream a Spotify playlist of the 24 Original Happening Hits! collection that inspired this album (only one song had to be substituted).Catch Serene Dominic's weekly livecast "The Human Torch Floor Show" every Thursday at 8:30 MST on facebook.com/serenedominic
In this episode of Discovering Darwin we tackle Chapter VIII - Joy, High Spirits, Love, Tender Feelings, Devotion in Darwin's book The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals. In this chapter Charles explores how we express ourselves when we are happy, in particular he discussed the two expressions associated with a happy mental state - smiling and laughing. Mark, Sarah and I explore what a "real" smile looks like, why we fake it sometimes, and why women more often fake it. Clearly a Duchenne "D" smileThe Duchenne smile is defined by the contraction of the obicular muscles that surround the eyes and the raising of the lips to expose the upper teeth. Darwin describes it as:Dr. Duchenne repeatedly insists that, under the emotion of joy, the mouth is acted on exclusively by the great zygomatic muscles, which serve to draw the corners backwards and upwards; but judging from the manner in which the upper teeth are always exposed during laughter and broad smiling, as well as from my own sensations, I cannot doubt that some of the muscles running to the upper lip are likewise brought into moderate action. The upper and lower orbicular muscles of the eyes are at the same time more or less contracted...Image from: https://www.earthslab.com/anatomy/orbicularis-oculi/Perfect for an audio podcast, we spent a long time discussing the value and accuracy of Plate III which was meant to illustrate various people in a state of happiness. Sarah thought the girl (bottom left, image 3) looked to be up to no good, she called her a minx!. We discussed how happy the man pictured on the right side of the page actually appeared to be. We also discussed laughter and how it may have evolved as a false alarm call. Laughter is found to be exhibited in other apes. Interestingly, the variation in the sounds apes like gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, bonobos, and humans make when being tickled follows the same pattern of relatedness seen in the phylogenetic tree based upon genetic relatedness. From Ross, Owren, and Zimmermann (2009)Papers we discussed:Ramachandran, Vilayanur S. "The neurology and evolution of humor, laughter, and smiling: the false alarm theory." Medical hypotheses 51.4 (1998): 351-354.Ross, Marina Davila, Michael J. Owren, and Elke Zimmermann. "The evolution of laughter in great apes and humans." Communicative & Integrative Biology 3.2 (2010): 191-194.The opening and closing theme to Discovering Darwin is "May" by Jared C. Balogh.Interlude music was Laugh from Lotusland: A musical comedy by Ian Whitcomb

John Barry's 2004 book about the 1918 influenza pandemic is a current bestseller. Barry talks about the parallels that are relevant to today's COVID-19 crisis. In both cases, he says, "the outbreak was trivialized for a long time." Also, we remember eccentric pop music figure Ian Whitcomb. Many people knew him for his 1965 novelty song 'You Turn Me On,' which was a top 10 hit. He died last month at 78.And classical music critic Lloyd Schwartz shares what he's been listening to during these difficult times.
Ian Whitcomb sadly passed away on April 19, of this year. He was brilliant singer, musician and historian. Folkscene proudly presents one of his appearance on the broadcast from October, 8, 2000. Hosted by the later Howard Larman. Engineered and remastered by Peter Cutler. ©Folkscene
Sad to hear of the death of British-born singer Ian Whitcomb at 78 in Los Angeles on Sunday (4/19/2020). You might remember Ian's only Top 10 single, "You Turn Me On", produced by old friend Jerry Dennon. Ian Whitcomb defied the "one hit wonder" stereotype. An erudite Brit with a love of vaudeville and an accomplished author, he talks about working with Mae West and his love for the music of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran and the roots of rock'n'roll. As Ian says, "That, to me, was like being around when the Bible was being written..." This interview was recorded at the Legends Of Rock'n'Roll show at EXPO 86. Ian was a special guest at the Donovan concert along with Peter Noone, Billy J. Kramer and Spencer Davis.
With Teddy Fruitacre nowhere in sight, Ian presents an hour full of vintage holiday songs. Songs for dancing, singing along, even holiday cruising. A special section of holiday songs especially for children. Plus just a dollop of rock 'n roll. Happy holidays!Ian Whitcomb is an entertainer, singer, songwriter, author, record producer and actor. As part of the British Invasion, his hit song “You Turn Me On” reached number 8 on Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1965. He has written several books on popular music, beginning with After the Ball in 1972. He accompanies his singing by playing the ukulele and, through his records, concerts, and film work, has helped to stimulate the current revival of interest in the instrument. Billy Cotton - Somebody Stole My Gal Ferko String Band - There's Something Nice About Everyone George Jackley - We All Went Up The Mountain George Formby - Pleasure Cruise Mrs. Mills - Bring Me Sunshine Al Bowlly - The Pied Piper of Hamelin Vaughn De Leath - The Toymaker's Dream Little Richard - Jenny Jenny Ian Whitcomb - Au Bal Musette The Andrews Sisters - Christmas Island The Sauter Finegan Orchestra - Midnight Sleigh Ride Eartha Kitt - Santa Baby Margaret Whiting & Johnny Mercer - Baby It's Cold Outside Whispering Jack Smith - 11:30 Saturday Night Randolph Sutton - When Are You Going to Lead Me To The Altar, Walter? In an episode first aired on March 11, 2013, host Andrew Sandoval conducts an exclusive discussion with the late producer/composer/artist, Larry Marks. The interview includes details on composing "Shadows And Reflections" with Tandyn Almer, a song covered by The Action (as produced by George Martin). Larry's fascinating entree into the world of songwriting and production in the Los Angeles music scene of the mid-1960's. Composing for Frank Sinatra and signing with his publishing company (including a collaboration with Sammy Cahn). Producing at the famed Gold Star Studios and collaborating with the "wrecking crew" of session musicians (such as Leon Russell). Composing the song "Glass" as covered by Sagittarius and produced by Gary Usher. How Larry collaborated with other songwriters, like Ernie Sheldon and Sammy Cahn. Marks role as a staff producer at Columbia. His early releases for the label such as Sonny Oceans (a.k.a. Gary Weiss - director of The Rutles) and Keith Allison's "Action, Action, Action." Recording at Columbia Square on Sunset Blvd. with engineer Ray Gerhardt. Producing British duo Chad & Jeremy's hit "Distant Shores" (and meeting their bassist/songwriter/manager Jim Guercio). Producing Gene Clark's solo debut single, the masterpiece "Echoes" (including Leon Russell's mesmerizing orchestral arrangement). Songwriter/producer/artist Johnny Walsh's fantastic one-off single for Columbia, "The End," composed by Ian Whitcomb. Jamie And The Jury (a group that recorded for a few labels) and their catchy 45, "This Too Shall Pass." Larry Marks' forced move from Columbia to A&M and signing the Merry-Go-Round. The generosity and culture of Herb Albert & Jerry Moss. Producing Emitt Rhodes & The Merry-Go-Round recordings such as "She Laughed Loud" and "Missing You" (which he composed). Studio aggregation The Garden Club's "Little Girl Lost-And-Found" (which featured songwriter Ruthann Friedman as vocalist). The Merry-Go-Round's lack of national success. Producing Southern California's West Coast Branch for their A&M release, "Colors Of My Life." Working with Phil Ochs and producing his Pleasures Of The Harbor album (selections of which are presented in rare mono mixes), which represented a stylistic shift for the singer-songwriter. Working at A&M studios and mastering with Bernie Grundman. Phil's fascination with Lenny Bruce. Larry Mark's own single on A&M: "L.A. Break Down (And Take Me In)." Producing the Flying Burrito Brothers seminal debut album with engineer Henry Lewy (and the fuzz pedal steel sound of Sneaky Pete). A reunion with Gene Clark and producing the albums of Dilllard & Clark and the single "Why Not Your Baby." Larry Marks' departure from A&M to focus on his family and his amp company Acoustic, as well as eventual move to Warner Bros. pictures. Larry Marks passed away on February 24, 2013 - his music lives on. A full playlist of this program is available @ http://www.cometothesunshine.com/id122.html
