In this episode of Music Evolves, Sean Martin sits down with Seth Cluett, Director of the Computer Music Center and Assistant Director of the Sound Art MFA program at Columbia, to explore the center's rich history, its role in advancing music technology, and how it continues to shape the future of sound. The Legacy and Mission of the Computer Music CenterThe CMC is housed in the same 6,000-square-foot space as the original Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, which dates back to 1951 and is one of the world's oldest university-based electronic music research facilities. This was the birthplace of early electronic music, where pioneers learned to use cutting-edge technology to create new sounds. Many of those musicians went on to establish their own studios around the world, from Egypt to Japan. The center has played a role in major milestones in music history, including the work of Wendy Carlos, a former student known for Switched-On Bach, the score for Tron, and The Shining. The first piece of electronic music to win a Pulitzer Prize was also composed here. Today, under Cluett's leadership, the focus remains on creativity-driven technological innovation—allowing composers and artists to explore technology freely and push the boundaries of what's possible in sound and music. One of the center's guiding principles is accessibility. Cluett emphasizes the importance of lowering barriers to entry for students who may not have had prior access to music technology. The goal is to make sure that anyone, regardless of background, can walk into the studio and begin working with 80% of its capabilities within the first 20 minutes.Exploring the Labs and StudiosThe episode also includes a tour of the labs and studios, showcasing some of the center's groundbreaking equipment. One highlight is the RCA Mark II Synthesizer, the world's first programmable music synthesizer. Built in the late 1950s, this massive machine—seven feet tall and weighing over a ton—was instrumental in shaping the sound of early electronic music. The system worked by punching holes into paper to control sound generation, similar to a player piano. While no longer in use, the CMC has collaborated with iZotope to model some of its effects digitally. The tour also features Columbia's electronic music studio, which houses synthesizers from Buchla, Serge, and Moog—the latter being developed by Bob Moog, who was once an undergraduate at Columbia. The center's modern design emphasizes a seamless workflow between analog and digital technologies, allowing students to quickly create, process, and experiment with sound.Another key space is the immersive media and spatial audio research facility, which features a 12.1-channel loudspeaker sphere for ambisonic sound, along with a 32-capsule microphone that captures highly detailed audio environments. This technology is not only shaping music but also fields like virtual reality, data sonification, and interactive media. The Future of Music TechnologyLooking ahead, Cluett highlights the increasing interplay between AI, machine learning, and music composition. While some companies promote AI-generated melodies, he believes that truly expressive, human-driven composition remains essential. The role of technology, he argues, is not to replace human creativity but to enable new forms of expression. The CMC is at the forefront of this shift, experimenting with real-time audio processing, interactive performance systems, and embedded sensors that enhance live music experiences. As music and technology continue to merge, Columbia's Computer Music Center remains a key player in shaping the future of sound. Whether through pioneering hardware, software innovation, or fostering the next generation of creative minds, the center proves that music technology is not just about engineering—it's about expression, accessibility, and the pursuit of artistic joy.

One of the reasons behind the immense popularity of this hit multiplayer roleplaying game is its incredible soundtrack. Today, we are joined by the Audio Director of Larian Studios — the makers of “Baldur's Gate 3” — Stefan Randelshofer, along with our guest host, Dolby's Senior Game Developer Relations Manager, Alistair Hirst, in a live discussion from this year's Game Developers Conference, to discuss what went into creating the rich, sonic atmosphere of the video game.“There is a complete architecture for 3D audio that allows you to listen to 3D audio objects. You can make that work automatically and you can facilitate those 3D audio objects and that gives you so many chances to be more immersed in what you're doing. In a world like Baldur's Gate, there's so much stuff going on. In the city, when people talk around you. You have a cool combat — if you have one of the spells fly by. So it really gives you the perspective of being there. Therefore, that was the reason for me to go into this Dolby setup”—Stefan Randelshofer, Audio Director, “Baldur's Gate 3”Be sure to check out “Baldur's Gate 3”, available on PC, Steam, and consoles. Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Ikhet (Sound Pyramid) is a 14-channel spatial audio installation that included ButtKicker Haptics, LED tubes with diffractive glasses giving a ghostly, analog Holographic effect, experimental field recordings, and a harsh electronic music track that reflected the artist Ali Santana's strained emotions throughout the pandemic. I had a chance to chat with Santana to unpack his journey and process in creating this piece. Here's his description of his immersive installation, which details more of the technology and emotional intention for the piece: This installation inspired by the ‘Glorious Light' integrates a multi-channel sound collage with audio-reactive LEDs to create an experience that engages viewers via light, spatial sound, and haptic feedback (vibration). The dynamic lighting which changes color and pattern in sync with the experimental sound piece, immerses the audience in a multi-sensory experience that they will see, hear and feel. Field recordings made between 2019 and 2022 along with experimentations in analog audio synthesis and hardware samplers were combined to create textures, noise, beats, and tones that reflect the artist's personal feelings of resilience, anxiety, grief, and frustration, during a period of unprecedented change.

By manipulating live instrumentation (treated guitars, sampled drums) with field recordings and other found sounds, KILN create lush and immersive soundscapes that borderline on hallucinogenic, and masterfully walk the line between organic, acoustic and electronic music. Grab a nice set of headphones for this episode!Tracklist Kiln - Lux (RPF Rebuild) Fibreforms - Untitled Bright Format Kiln - Hong Kiln - Season Akira Yamaoka - The Reverse Will Moses Sumney - Virile People Press Play - That Walk This podcast is part of the Pantheon Podcast network.

Austin speaks with Matthew Boudreau of Aural Stage Studios, !!th Hour Productions, Audio Drama Network, and the executive producer of this show, about immersive sound. we experimented with google hangouts for this interview and created a live tutorial video with Reaper, demonstrating what is discussed for Patreon Patrons. being that it was our first time using the platform, Austins audio is a little wonky, but we believe we've worked out the issue for possible future tutorials!

Michael Cardillo returns to the Digital Convergence Podcast to talk about immersive sound for video. The Video Business Success Coach Kris Simmons tells us about Blow Fish Marketing. Just because you are small doesn't mean you have to act small. This strategy helps one-man video production companies give the first impression of a larger studio. I've come to the end of the series of podcasts about the Digital Manifesto that Mike Jones posted on his blog, Digital Basin. That was earlier this summer and I try my best to explain why it's taken me long to post 5 podcasts. Throughout the series I've been using his ideas in the Manifesto as a guage to determine how current the curriculum at my school, the CDIA is. It did very well - 9 out of 13. Here are the issues, numbered according to the Manifesto followed by the episode they were reviewed in. Passed 03 Compositing #35 04 Distribution w/o hierarchy #3705 Owning the entire filmmaking process #3706 Software agnosticisim #3708 Screen Studies integrated into Production #3909 Succeeding despite obstacles #3910 Promoting the story ahead of production values #3912 Collaborative Learning #4413 Teacher as Facilitator #44 Not Passed 01 Composing Space #3502 Virtual Camera #3507 Immersive Sound #3911 Personal Stories #44 These episodes were different from what I usually post, they involved big ideas and how they fit into the world of filmmaking. Keeping the idea threads connected from one episode to another, particularly when a lot of time passed between was difficult. Time to think and understand seems to be a constant problem for me. For all the effort, I enjoyed exploring ideas and that took me to unfamiliar territory Bear in mind, these aren't my ideas, I'm just having fun poking at them. I thought of a couple of things to add to the manifesto: Get Teachers and students to better interact between related/linked fields, such as audio, 3D and fx, even web design. I don't think the fringes of our filmmaking experience should be familiar territory.Get more exposure to the supportive technology used for digital distribution. Collaborative learning tools, such as blogs and wikis have a lot of potential that I hope to explore for sharing ideas and information and for promoting my work. Towards the end of the episode I talk a little about how all this technology is pushing against the boundaries of a stifling culture of intellectual protectionism. If I sound a little harsh, it's only because I've only recently come to recognize how limiting it is to withhold access to resources that, if they were more available, would result in a great deal more creativity to the benefit of everyone. I'm sure once I get used to it I'll return to lamblike complacency.
