One of the most famous acoustic guitars in rock history – Kurt Cobain's Martin D-18E – will go on show at the Royal College of Music Museum in London as part of a landmark exhibition exploring Nirvana's groundbreaking MTV Unplugged performance. Opening on 3 June 2025, the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will be the first time Cobain's iconic guitar has been shown in the UK. Booking for Kurt Cobain Unplugged opens on Wednesday, 30 April. Visitors can join the waitlist to be among the first to know when tickets go on sale and receive updates and event highlights related to the exhibition. Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition delves into the musical legacy of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. It traces the remarkable journey of this iconic guitar, which became the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction in 2020 when it was bought for over $6 million by Australian entrepreneur Peter Freedman AM. Peter is the founder of RØDE Microphones, founding supporter of the Royal College of Music's Australia Commonwealth Scholarship and has generously loaned the guitar for this special exhibition. Peter Freedman commented: ‘When I purchased this guitar, my intention was to have it begin a worldwide tour of exhibitions, to support performing artists. I am delighted that this intent will be premiered at the Royal College of Music, London, with the first exhibition of its kind and will support talented musicians worldwide.'The exhibition also reunites the guitar with another piece of rock history – Cobain's famous olive-green mohair cardigan, worn during the 1993 Unplugged performance. This marks the first time these two legendary items have been displayed together. Alongside these items, a carefully curated selection of Nirvana memorabilia will provide insight into the band's influence, Cobain's songwriting, and the enduring legacy of Nirvana and their MTV Unplugged performance. Key highlights of the exhibition also include: A selection of Nirvana gig posters featuring a 90s punk/grunge aesthetic.A selection of collectible Nirvana vinyl in its original shrink wrap. The top portion of a Soundboard of another guitar from the same series. The exhibition has been curated by Alan di Perna – one of America's foremost rock journalists, and Royal College of Museum Curator Gabriele Rossi Rognoni. Alan di Perna's work has appeared in titles including Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Classic Rock and Billboard amongst others, and he has interviewed iconic artists including Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, Courtney Love and Pat Smear. Alan Di Perna says, ‘I'm delighted to be a part of the Royal College of Music Museum's first-ever rock music exhibition. MTV's Nirvana Unplugged in New York was a landmark event—a stand-out performance by a group that changed the course of rock history in the 1990s.' Gabriele Rossi Rognoni hopes the Kurt Cobain Unplugged exhibition will extend the profile and reach of the work of the Museum and Royal College of Music, opening cross dialogues with students of different backgrounds and creating bridges between historical and contemporary music. He says: ‘One of the treasures in the collections of the Royal College of Music Museum is the world's oldest guitar. I am thrilled that this exhibition will build on our extraordinary heritage, connecting it with a monument of today's music such as Kurt Cobain. I look forward to the dialogues, musical encounters and new ideas that this exhibition will spark among our visitors and the top-class musicians that study at the College.' A series of events will accompany the exhibition including new works and performances by RCM students inspired by the guitar alongside family friendly workshops and concerts. After three brain injuries over her lifetime, Amina's cognitive ability was impacted in such a way that she was unable to ask for help on her own. But like many of us, it was hard for her to know how much she had really changed as a person.Poignantly, her young son was the one person was able to show her how much she had changed by asking for his "old" mom back. It was an emotional blow and a common hit to our self esteem that is common for those of us with brain injury. Wisely, Amina had a good lawyer who helped her get access to aides to help her with basic admin tasks and some small parts of taking care of her son. But she was there for him as he was there for her., even if their relationship got significantly emotionally strained at times. She knows she has a limited amount of stamina and if it runs out in the middle of a task, she just has to drop everything and go home. It requires planning and she has gotten pretty good at predicting when she is getting low.She has made great strides and is a wonderfully self determined woman and caring mother. She helps us learn from her experience.A Note On The Life Over Pain Theme Music: Emily Bielagus graciously and generously composed the lovely theme music for the Life Over Pain podcast. Our Chicago Fretboard Summit was filled with highlights. Among them was TJ Thompson's return to the stage for another mind-blowing talk about following your heart, vintage guitar restoration, and so much more. During this 90-minute session, the acclaimed pre-war Martin guitar expert offered a bit of everything: Sage advice for new instrument makers; insights on how to protect the value of your acoustic guitars; life hacks that we can all learn from; and even a little beer koozie philosophy lesson. Toward the end of his session, TJ had some quick tips for fellow luthiers. A few benefited from a visual reference so we posted the video excerpts on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/xc02s7rp-bM It's an unfiltered and candid talk from one of the guitar world's best. For his talk, Thompson invited friends and clients David Ziegele and Al Drewes onstage. You'll hear them occasionally interject and offer their own personal experiences with vintage guitars. Apologies for the lav mic noise; we did our best to reduce it. Recorded live on August 27, 2022 at Old Town's Maurer Hall. The Fretboard Summit will return to Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music on August 24-26, 2023. We'll share ticketing information soon. Bella Paige was a highly competitive show jumper as a younger girl. And she LOVED it. The adrenaline rush alone might have been enough to keep her going but she loved the competition, the horses, all of it. She planned to compete and show horses for the rest of her life. Sadly, injuries intervened. In any sport having to do with 1200 pound animals you can bet that injuries will come, and often. But highly competitive, driven athletes (even young ones) often don't share their pain with others, nor do they ask for help. So Bella kept competing in spite of accumulating injuries and increasing pain. But, finally, sadly she had to stop and she had to drop out of school to heal.Such a set back can be emotionally crushing, and it was for Bella. It took a great deal of time, many dark days with little to brighten them, and a vast amount of help for her to come through her emotional and physical struggles. And she's not done. Bella works on herself everyday. She's found dirt bikes to replace horses, which she sees as less dangerous, but still feeds her need for a rush. A lot of what gives her purpose and, I imagine a bit of peace, is her podcast, her mentoring, and her speaking engagements. All of which she does to share her story with others like her (and me) in the hope that we can all gain some small or big insight from her experience to help us on our path to less pain, more clarity, and a life of value.Find Bella's podcast here: https://www.postconcussioninc.com/podcast and her website here: https://www.postconcussioninc.com. When you are faced with an existential crisis, it's hard to see what is right in front of you. Brain injury and Lime Disease screw with one's sense of self. Pamela Schmidt was a never-say-never person a superwoman in the flesh. She still knows she is that person in some ways, but then again, she isn't that person. She's had concussions in her past, like so many of us, but nothing like when a window fell on her head. That changed everything. Back in the 90's she was told to keep going, that she was okay. But she wasn't. She had to change her approach to life. So she changed what she did, but not entirely how she did it. She was still all in - home schooling her three kids, being a perpetual volunteer who usually became the lead at those efforts. She's an incredibly capable person in spite of her limitations. Superwoman still reigns. Pamela just doesn't see it herself because she can't be the same kind of superwoman that she used to be. But you'll hear how strong, passionate and talented she is as she tells her story. And you can see it in her quilting. Check it out in via the link in the text. Here's a link to The Little Book of Great Sex we talk about.A Note On The Life Over Pain Theme Music: Emily Bielagus graciously and generously composed the lovely theme music for the Life Over Pain podcast. Content is a word that gets thrown around a lot, and the truth is, today it is easier than ever before to create content. A big reason for that is thanks to companies such as Røde Microphones, which create budget-minded products that constantly push the industry forward. For Røde, innovation is the name of the game and no one knows that better than Damien Wilson, the CEO of Røde Microphones. Damien has been with the company since its early days, growing into his leadership role and scaling the business in a rapid timeframe. But even for him, despite the success, the last decade has been a wild ride.“I'm a kid from the Western suburbs, which is not necessarily a nice area and I never thought I'd be sitting in New York doing business, or sitting on a couch with Guns and Roses. When I walk into Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard and I see a Røde product, I get excited because I listened to that music of the eighties where Sunset Boulevard was the place to be.”The transformation of the audio industry has been accelerated because of the way companies such as Rode have democratized audio equipment. It no longer takes a fortune and an entire studio build-out, to get professional-sounding content. On Marketing Trends, Damien took me through how Rode has muscled it to the top to compete with legacy brands within the space. He also touches on the unique hiring challenges that Røde has been facing in Australia during the past 18 months, and how the company has been able to pivot through innovating in their use of manufacturing equipment. He also discusses how Røde handles customer feedback to ideate its product line, and how influencers can push your products further. I'm excited for you to enjoy and hopefully learn from this conversation with Damien up next on Marketing Trends. Main TakeawaysThe Secret Sauce: Innovating with Product Manufacturing Equipment: More than ever, supply chain management and sourcing are critical to the success of any business that sells products. Finding the best, most cost-effective tools to build your products might not be created for your industry. You may have to think creatively about what other industries use similar manufacturing equipment that can be modified to build your goods. It Takes Educational Background to Create Great Content: Having an education-focused mindset is a foundational part of good content creation. When you create materials that educate the consumer on products, even if they are not your own, you're building trust with the consumer. This kind of content helps build a community which helps to further push consumers down the funnel.Where to Look for New Product Inspiration: Assess all the other products, aside from your own, that your customer also uses to see where to expand product offerings. Other tools and tech they use to create their finished product could also be an area for you to cross over into. Key Quotes“One of the things that I brought immediately to the company was that style of video-based education, style marketing. Because one of the things that I thought was the big problem with audio brands, especially anything music-related, you needed to sort of teach people how to use the product and that gave them the ability to purchase.”“We have a machine that is specked for making parts for watches. Every high-end Swiss watch manufacturer will have one of these machines. It's the same machine made by Citizen, but we use it to make backplates for the microphones because the precision and the tolerance is so insane. They're making a hundred thousand dollar Rolex's, but this is for a $200 microphone. Other mic manufacturers are not thinking in that regard; they're not thinking about how we can take that machine out of that industry, put it into our version and then create a product around it. That's really the secret sauce.” “One of the things that we did a few years ago was look at our ERP system and look at how we were running the business end-to-end, and sit there and go, ‘Okay, what are the improvements? What process improvements do we need to put in place right now?' And before we didn't have a mature supply chain team in house, but we grew that super quick. And it was just at the right time, because then COVID hit [and] we started to see some interruption in supply chains. We had the ability to be able to pivot into making things that were completely available to us onshore in Australia. That meant you needed to have the right amount of raw material and all those bits and pieces, which was a testament to the supply chain team getting an AI pay system up and running quickly.”“What we're looking at now is adjacencies that we can move into. We look at our customer and say, ‘What is our customer's workflow? What are they doing?' They're podcasters; they're content creators. ‘What sort of equipment are they using?' Oh, they're wearing headphones, and those headphones don't say Røde. So maybe we need to work into that adjacency.” “Where Røde has risen to the top in terms of customer sentiment has been the fact that we deliver a product and we keep on enhancing it. And it becomes a schedule of, every three months, let's add something else to this particular product. So the customer goes, ‘Wow, you've done it again.' And it also shows that we're listening to feedback.”“I'm a kid from the Western suburbs, which is not necessarily a nice area and I never thought I'd be sitting in New York doing business, or sitting on a couch with Guns and Roses. When I walk into Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard and I see a Røde product, I get excited because I listened to that music of the eighties where Sunset Boulevard was the place to be.”“When you get big it's like the mistakes are just amplified, right? In the past, if we made a mistake in a launch and maybe there was a component wrong, or the testing was incorrect, you may be thinking about 5,000 units. Now you're talking about, you know, 500,000. We can't afford that. So we need to have everything upstream and downstream sorted. So we know that we're not going to replicate any of those issues.”BioDamien Wilson is the CEO of The Freedman Group, home to RØDE Microphones, Aphex, Event Electronics, and SoundField. Joseph Ryan oozes enthusiasm. He's overcome so many brain injuries that his head seems to have been a target for danger rather than a protected space. As with many who have suffered brain injury pre-2018, his had gone undiagnosed. So he struggled. Smart, energetic, creative, adventurous; yet he struggled. But, his brain wasn't keeping pace. As years passed and injuries mounted, Joseph finally found help via Pennsylvania's head injury program. This program provided all the elements of help he needed: counseling, PT, OT, out patient. His case manager helped him through financial issues, insurance issues as well as personal growth issues. The people in this program helped Joseph holistically. They helped him to get the home support he needed and to fundamentally turn his life around. In fact, Joseph has gone from despondent to vivacious. He has a new lease on life and a life purpose to visit all major league baseball stadiums in the US. And he's well on his way having been to 16 of the 31 parks already and will add the minor league parks, too. He's a fan of the Boston Red Sox in spite of his Philadelphia residence (he says it must be the ultimate rebellion because he is the progeny of die hard Phillies fans).Along with his new-found life's passion, Joseph is on a bit of a mission to share his story hoping to help others who have similarly struggled. His advice: Don't keep it to yourself. Tell someone, because someone else will know how to help. Keep asking questions. Advocating for yourself doesn't always mean knowing what to ask for, but it does mean speaking up and telling your story so someone else can help.Joseph is very happy to help anyone directly and he has generously offered his contact information here:Joseph RyanC:267-819-6186E: musingechoes@gmail.comFacebook contact pages: facebook.com/RSOXGUY215 Facebook profile: Joseph TBISURVIVOR Ryan (full name). It's hard to imagine a time when we didn't know how dangerous a blow to the head can be. But it was just 20 years ago when Ethan O'Brian was playing youth hockey and started getting banged into the boards and ice and other players. He kept playing. No one told him to stop as they might have today. There was little talk of concussion. It's not just hockey and American football or rugby where kids get hit hard and enough times to cause damage to their brains - for boys and girls alike. Thanks, sadly, to the NFL and military, stories about brain injury and CTE have been common over the last few years. Research is being done and parents and schools are waking up to the risks kids face.Unfortunately, that didn't exist for Ethan. He had to learn how to help himself on his own. He's an over-achiever - the kind of kid you wanted to hate but couldn't because he was so damn nice. But as he suffered more and more concussions, he withdrew, became a bit solitary. While he was in university, he found it was hard to concentrate and study. He knew there had to be a solution. So along with his studies, he researched strategies that could help his brain and overall health to improve his performance. It worked though diet, activity pacing, limiting sensory input and more he tells us about. Ethan's journey was always going to be one of success. He's just built that way. Now he helps others with similar health issues find pathways to better health and he and Dr. Blaskovich have written a book called Dr. B's Concussion Breakthrough available on Amazon. Ethan has wonderful, first hand advice for parents and kids who face concussion recovery. Sameer Bhide's life was on track. Family, friends, career, many interests to pursue. Then one day, out of no where, his brain says, "Stop!" A stroke. A genetic condition caused his stroke so there wasn't really much he could have done to prevent it. So now he had to deal with the aftermath. A month in a medically induced coma left hime a bit bewildered, at a loss as he awoke to a completely new situation, one where he couldn't talk or move most of his body. On the surface it's hard to see it now, but in many ways he was lucky. He had his cognitive function, he had his family and friends around him. and he had good medical care to help him process his situation. Not everyone has that many factors in the plus column. Sameer made the most of his rehab services here in the states and he made good progress. And on top of that foundation, he then added an extended stay at a facility in India call Nimba. there he continued with the therapy he was doing in the US and he added meditation, yoga and massage, among others. The progress Sameer was able to make in two months at Nimba was vast going from a wheel chair to walking with a cane. He credits his progress to the marriage of both eastern and western medicine. Either one alone would not have worked as well for him, but the two together produced results Sameer is happy with and continuing to build on to this day.His story is rich with challenges as he struggles with recovery, having to leave his career as a business and technology consultant, divorce, and rotator cuff surgery and even getting waylaid in India after that surgery due to COVID travel constraints. He shares this story with us and in his book One Fine Day which is available through his website https://www.sameerbhide.com/. Today on the podcast we have a brand new podcast set up courtesy of RØDE Microphones (thanks for hooking us up RØDE)! We hit record just after the breaking news of Utah’s surprise alien monolith, so obviously we had to have a discussion on how that makes us feel. We also chat about our bathroom renovation and how many things have gotten in the way of us ACTUALLY getting work done. Then, a discussion about the pantry makeover sparks a conversion about kitchen gadgets; which ones are gimmicks vs which ones you can’t live with out. Is an avocado slicer worth the space it takes in your drawer? Do you really need a coffee grinder if your espresso machine has one built in? Would you spend $200 on a matte black soda stream? Then we play a quick round of would you rather, monolith edition. Megan Heiser grew up on a farm, traveled the world, had a career, got married, had a baby. She was a perfectionist. Then things changed, dramatically. An auto-immune disease caught hold of her and has made her take a completely different approach to life. Each of us wake up to a new day with some uncertainty, but we generally have a strong sense of what our day will be like. Unfortunately, that's not true for Megan. Her disease throws her a curve ball every day. She may wake up with pain, fatigue or a whole host of other bodily errors she'll have to deal with that day. To cope, she's had to let go of trying to be perfect - easier said than done. So she tries to look at what is real and what is not real. Is there something that doesn't hurt today? Can she use that piece to help her accomplish what she wants to do that day? Or, does she have to realign her goals for the day to accommodate what she realistically can do. It's a daily balancing act.How does she stay sane? She has a robust mindfulness meditation practice, and even teaches and runs workshops on the topic. She says this type of meditation helps her to settle herself and to learn to be self-compassionate. Also, she learns from her students how to look at the issues and emotions that come up in class from different perspectives, something she might not have done before. She feels all this helps her connect with her life in a new and deeper way than she ever did before. A silver lining. Cissy Gore-Birch, is a mother of 5, the Executive Manager of Aboriginal Engagement for Bush Heritage Australia and such a positive, loving and passionate leader in her community who is forever fighting for the respect and protection of land, the importance of connection to culture and particularly, involving the voices of the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, in the conversations around solutions to issues that impact us today. This conversation provides some vital education around the role grassroots Aboriginal groups like rangers, play in land conservation and protection; listening to Aboriginal expertise as we head towards another potentially devastating fire season; what its really like for communities up in the Kimberley's and what has resonated with me the most - even listening back to it again as I edited it for you this week - is the way listening to Cissy ended up feeling like something of a much needed pep talk. Later in the episode you'll hear her talk about how we young blackfullas have to remember we're beautiful and remind ourselves each day how deadly we are and the power we have to lead and make change. She reminds us that we need to support each other - not compete with or tear each other down - but rather, spread love and lift each other up to make it through and see positive change together. I am so grateful to have been able to connect with and learn from Cissy - it's voices like hers that exemplify the power we hold in us as a people and I know she will inspire and leave a smile on the face of every single person who hears her. I will also mention this was recorded early on in isolation so when we talk about mining and the role it plays in communities, it was before the recent atrocity Rio Tinto conducted in destroying the 40,000 year old Juukan Caves of the Pilbara Region. . . . Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Always Was, Always Will Be Our Stories. A particularly big thanks to Cissy Gore-Birch for all the incredible work you do, your leadership and inspiration. Thank you also to Bush Heritage Australia for connecting me to Cissy and making our record possible. . . . An Aussie bloke has bought the acoustic guitar that Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana‘s iconic 1993 MTV Unplugged performance for an eye-watering US$6 million (that's about AUD $8.78 million dollarydoos, folks), making it the most expensive guitar ever sold in the history of guitars. Aussie Peter Freedman, founder of RØDE Microphones, bought the guitar to help invest in the Australian music scene. In the second part of our music news, we discuss the new arts support package by the Federal Government. This crucial package comes after many industries, venues and artists within the arts sector have seen significant losses due to COVID-19. Catch up on everything Homebrewed here
Sometimes the stars align in ways that no-one could predict. Jack might say something without regretting it three seconds later, or Adam might even get a girlfriend. Or sometimes, you address complaints about your audio quality, and then find a competition giving away incredible audio gear to tiny podcasts! RØDE Microphones are giving away top-quality gear to tiny podcasts with big ideas, and if there's two Kiwi blokes that are too big for their britches, it's Jack and Adam.
