In this episode, David sits down with Dr. Salvatore Forcina, aka The American Doctor, to discuss his amazing and inspirational story of love, struggle, success, and life. Including, moving from Italy to Argentina at a young age and having to start again, when he emigrated to America because his medical degree was not recognised. He shares how his parents inspired him to overcome challenges and prejudice to follow his dream. He explains why he turned his life story into a book and what he learned through the process of doing so. KEY TAKEAWAYS Both talent and the environment you are raised in have a significant impact. It is very hard for someone living today to really understand the limitations people lived under in the past. Sometimes you have to build a pyramid one grain at a time. Perseverance is essential. It is normal to want to give up. Don´t do that, keep fighting. Not all parents can give their children material things, but they can all give their kids love. Some differences between people are obvious, others are not. Take time to get to know people. Keep your brain active. Life is beautiful but passes fast, so pause and enjoy the good things. BEST MOMENTS‘Get good advice, from the right people and work hard.'‘Be hungry. When you are hungry you will always be looking for something to take care of that hunger.'‘All human beings have flaws, the prejudice is there, we have to surmount all that.'‘I started from the basement, but my daughter, she started from the 10th floor.' Dr. Steven Feldman, Professor at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina, discusses his experience with the State of Arkansas, which denied his honorarium when he refused to sign the pledge to not support BDS after he gave a Zoom lecture to medical students at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Feldman actively supports boycotts and believes it is his constitutional right to do so. ***The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement works to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law.
Hundreds of people have been killed in the fighting in Sudan in recent weeks, including a Sudanese American physician. Dr. Bushra Ibnauf lived in Khartoum and was training other medical professionals. He was stabbed outside his home earlier this week. And, there's been a mixed reaction to the new bitcoin currency in El Salvador. Also, Venezuela's best-known opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, unexpectedly arrived in the US this week. He was rerouted to Miami after getting kicked out of Colombia, where he attempted to attend a summit without an invite. Plus, "Pele" means "the best."
When it comes to purpose, passion, and persistence, few have as compelling a story as Dr. Salvatore Forcina! As a child born in Italy during World War II, Dr. Salvatore's early years were spent poverty-stricken and without any proper shelter. Like many Italians at the time, his parents followed a popular migration to Argentina, a stable country that offered rich natural resources and the chance for a more stable life. Shortly after arriving in Argentina, he was sent away to live with an order of priests for seven years, as they offered the only available avenue for educating the boy. The one thing that kept him going during this lonely time was his dream to study medicine and live a life whose focus was on helping people. His indefatigable determination eventually compelled him to enter and graduate from medical school, emigrate to America and become the chief of surgery at two major hospitals. As a child born in Italy during World War I, Salvatore's early years were spent poverty-stricken and without any proper shelter. In this wonderful conversation, Dr. Salvatore shares his inspiring personal story and how sheer determination, resilience, and perseverance helped him not only survive, but live his ultimate dream. Born in Italy during World War II, Salvatore Forcina was a young boy who survived all odds by living through his young childhood without any real or proper shelter. Like many Italians during this time, a month after turning eight years old his parents followed this migration to Argentina, a developing country at the time rich with natural resources and hope for a more stable life. Sent away to live with Redemptorist priests for seven long years as the only available option to study, this young boy struggled emotionally and psychologically with no social outlets and little emotional development. Salvatore's dream to study medicine and help people propelled him to carry on and continue his education, eventually being educated and living on three different continents, each with a new language to learn and master. Despite his meager beginnings which provided no social and little educational opportunity and despite the many years and setbacks it took him to accomplish this, his goal was ultimately accomplished because of his sheer determination. This true-life story is motivating, uplifting, and based on what genuine love of family can provide to someone.https://www.amazon.com/American-Doctor-Salvatore-J-Forcina/dp/1592112099https://histriabooks.com/product/the-american-doctor/https://www.facebook.com/people/Salvatore-Forcina/100080742693642/https://www.instagram.com/drsalvatoreforcinamd/https://twitter.com/DrSalForcina Support the show

"The idea was to try working in Rome for a year and see how it went. This sensible American plan collapsed under the weight of Italian bureaucracy. Luckily I didn't investigate every angle before starting off; if I had known the true lay of the land I might not have kept going after that Italian medical license like a donkey after his carrot. I'd have taken a job in some clinic in the Bronx, where I'd be seeing four patients an hour to this day. Instead, I made those steps you can't retrace: gave up my three-bedroom apartment on the Upper West Side with views of the Empire State Building and the Tri- borough Bridge, and sold my Dodge Challenger convertible to a pinky-ringed Turkish importer-exporter who planned to strip it down to the skeleton of an Oriental low-rider. Months beforehand I started focusing my Manhattanite efficiency on getting registered in Italy, my Italian husband leading me by the hand through the wilderness of Old World red tape. The first step was “getting my documents together,” an Italian ritual repeated before every encounter with officialdom. Sticking to a list kindly provided by the Italian Consulate, I collected my birth certificate, passport, high school diploma, college diploma, college transcript, medical school diploma, medical school transcript, certificates of internship and residency, National Board Examination certificates, American Board of Internal Medicine test results, and specialization diploma. Then I got them transfigured into Italian by the one person in New York authorized by the Italian Consulate to crown his translation with an imprimatur. We judiciously gave him a set of our own translations as crib notes, tailored by my husband to match the Rome medical school curriculum." Susan Levenstein is an internal medicine physician and author of Dottoressa: An American Doctor in Rome. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "An American doctor in Rome." Class and race distinctions in who COVID-19 kills are becoming increasingly glaring. These disparities are stark, and global.
As you heard last time, Dr. Gale (a bone marrow transplant specialist from UCLA) rose to international prominence after being the first American physician invited by the Soviet Union to treat patients suffering acute radiation trauma, only days after the horrific incident at Chernobyl. Our journey continues as Dr. Gale is flown in by helicopter to personally survey the Chernobyl nuclear power-plant. This only weeks after the meltdown of reactor number four. We'll see what it was like walking through the eerily empty streets of Pripyat. This was literally one of the most dangerous and heavily restricted areas on the planet. For an outsider, especially an American, to be personally inspecting this area, actually treating patients, all during the height of the cold war, was simply unthinkable... until it actually happened. For those of you who enjoyed the recent hit HBO series on Chernobyl, we'll spend a little more time there. Then we'll move on to subsequent nuclear incidents such as Tokiamura and Fukushima, and Dr. Gale's first hand experience with those. We'll discuss his lessons learned and his thoughts on the future of nuclear energy. We'll also see what he's up to today. It's an incredible part II for this rare series. With that said, let's get started.
Episode 25 is live! Not really, but the Dads are back with another round of cold drinks, and fun conversation. This week we learn about the Superstition Mountains in Arizona, blind faith in the health care system and an American "Doctor" playing God in Uganda, is Bob Lazar telling the truth? Or is it just what they want us to believe? And finding Secondhand Treasures from thrift stores, yard sales, etc. Join us wont you?

Thirty three years after the worst nuclear disaster in human history, the name Chernobyl rings ominously, and continues to inspire fear, outrage, debate and grim curiously. It's a captivating story now being re-told dramatically, though not completely accurately, through HBO's new and very popular mini-series. We've had some pretty unique people on this program but perhaps today's guest is more unique than most. Dr. Robert Gale is an academic physician who's spent his career researching and treating patients with Leukemia and other bone marrow disorders. He's published over 800 research articles and books, he's an international expert on nuclear disaster response, and get this...he's even written for, and appeared in several Hollywood movies. Oh, he's also the shared recipient of an Emmy award for his work in a, "60 Minutes" piece. As you heard in the opening news clip, Dr. Gale rose to international prominence after being the first American physician invited by the Soviet Union to treat patients suffering from acute radiation trauma after Chernobyl. It's where our journey begins on this special two part episode. With that said, let's get started.

The BBC unveiled Jodie Whittaker's outfit as the 13th Doctor, so we decided to table our discussion of the Sontaran and Zygon two-parters for next time so we could really dig into her look. We had about an hour's worth of thoughts! Short version: We're big fans, and we're excited to see it all in action. (Also we mention some set photos of Jodie Whittaker in the 12th Doctor's clothes, but they may have since disappeared for copyright reasons, we'll keep monitoring.) Then we take on some great reader mail! Dan asks us who we would cast as an American Doctor if we absolutely have to, friend of the show J.G. offers some classic series thoughts, and Delphine has so much to say about the Master that we only get through half of her email, with a promise to continue.

Her diverse educational interests led her to travel extensively throughout Asia, and to teach and practice chiropractic around the world. She eventually set down roots in Denver in 2014, founding Nikau Chiropractic as homage to the iconic Nikau trees that line the shores of her native New Zealand. This is a special addition of Perspectives On Fire as this episode was recorded in Ethiopia. My guest today is Dejene Hodes who is an American-Ethiopian Serial Entrepreneur. He currently operates a Ethiopian tourism business, Ethiopian art distributor to the United States and a business to business networking company. Also, he is the son of Dr Rick Hodes who is a well regarded, American Doctor in Ethiopia. Dejene talks about the culture of Ethiopia and the differences between western society along with entrepreneurial opportunities within the country, He shares the in's and out's of the economy, potential growth of the agricultural industry and the issues currently facing the nation. I asked Dejene at the end of the show what book he recommends for a friend to read, he responded with 'The Intelligent Investor'. On today’s Modern Notion Daily podcast, we’re talking spies and subways cars in the ocean. The first podcast starts off with a bang. Followed by more bangs. In fact, lots of banging, a crash or two, and a very loud Tinkle. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/notsaneforwork/message
In this week's podKast with a "K" we welcome Doctor Who fanzine producer Gareth Kavanagh, editor of Vworp Vworp! as a guest for the full show! Christian Cawley and James McLean are in the hotseat too, with a nice selection of topics under discussion. To kick it off, we mull over the recent Buzzfeed.com list based around the idea of how Doctor Who might have been different had it been created in the USA rather than in Television Centre. Following this, we spend a few moments appreciating the contributions that the late Christopher Barry made to Doctor Who between 1963 (The Daleks) and 1979 (The Creature from the Pit). Given that we have unofficial fourth podKaster Gareth Kavanagh on hand as well, there's also a bit of missing episodes chatter in there for you lucky people as well, not to mention some updates on the progress of Vworp Vworp! issue 3... Rounding off the show (yet taking up a greater chunk of the running time than either of the other topics) are our recommmendations, with 1977 serial Underworld getting the lion's share of the discussion.
