In this episode of "Talking Real Money," Don and Tom discuss investment risk using "volatility scores" to compare investments. They break down how the ARK Innovation ETF's higher returns come with extreme volatility and steeper losses compared to the Vanguard Total World Stock Index. They answer listener questions, suggesting a fee-only fiduciary advisor to someone with a broker-built portfolio of individual stocks and annuities. They also recommend a retirement plan update for a long-time follower moving from saving to spending phase. Throughout the show, Don and Tom emphasize understanding investment volatility, diversification, and portfolio rebalancing with their trademark mix of financial know-how and friendly banter. "Today's jobs report had an impact as the Fed raise rates based on it. Participation labor force shrank by roughly 350K last month. She also discusses investing in commodities as a potential strategy in the current stock market environment. Schneider states that she invested in the ARKK ETF recently.
Several of the the past decades most popular stocks have gone from fast growing to undervalued. Yet, another case for diversification. Plus, Don shares the real story of the return that most of Ark Innovation ETF investors received.Listeners want to know:What should be done with an unneeded required minimum distribution? Is her financial advice provider really acting as a fiduciary? Will the RMD age be increased to 73 this year? Can their non-retirement plan investments support them until Social Security? How can you know which ETFs are actively managed?
After posting fast, furious, triple-digot returns the Ark Innovation ETF attracted billions of dollars. Since then, the bulk of the funds investors have lost a lot of money. Even those in for the fund's history haven't done all that well considering the risk they took. Then, Don talks with listeners:How can investors determine if they're dealing with a true, 100% fuduciary advisor? He spends a lot of time with someone who appears to have a really bad financial advisor. How do heirs get started handling a complex estate. What are reasonable fees for financial advice?

Cathy Wood is a warrior. Perhaps with the wrong battle plan. She is a general - intelligent, seasoned, and committed to the cause. Yet, a war of attrition only works if the army (in this case, her investors) have the staying power for prolonged battles with an unknown endpoint. She catches falling knifes, averages down, and counts on her investors having unlimited patience and staying power. To catch a falling knife is a phrase used to describe buying a stock that is falling dramatically in hopes of picking the bottom. It is a risky investment strategy, often akin to gambling. The danger in trying to catch a falling knife is that the stock will continue to drop. The phrase is a metaphor - literally, you may get cut and bloodied trying to catch a falling knife. If one buys a share of stock at $100 and it falls by 50% to $50, it must go up by 100% to reach the breakeven point. Think through that. The Ark Invest Management flagship fund, Ark Innovation ETF (symbol: ARKK), is down 51% year to date (YTD) at $47.13 per share. For comparison purposes, the NASDAQ Composite Index is down 22% YTD.Over the trailing 5 year period the NASDAQ is up 100% and ARKK is up 82%.For her strategy to be successful she must be able to hang on through the lows, purchase additional shares on the way down, and have greater inflows of funds than outflows over the time horizon.Averaging down is an investment strategy, which in the extreme is known as “catching a falling knife”, that involves a stock owner purchasing additional shares of a previously initiated investment after the price has dropped. Assuming the stock turns around, this ensures a lower breakeven point for the stock position and higher gains in dollar terms (compared to the gains if the position was not averaged down).1To reiterate the key elements to a successful strategy of averaging down:The investor has the funds for additional purchases. The stock eventually turns around and moves higher. The investment horizon is long enough to wait for the turnaround.Currently, roughly 50% of S&P 500 stocks are down at least 50% from their highs. Many stocks in the NASDAQ and smaller capitalization indices are down far more.It is not uncommon for a bottom to occur when 70% of all stocks are down 50% or more. We are not there yet. From a technical standpoint, the S&P 500 has retested the +/- 4160 level numerous times. Currently, 4132 and facing the headwinds of inflation, rising interest rates, and war in Europe. Have we seen the bottom, such that the Ark Invest (Cathy Wood) strategy will prove successful? Bear market rallies will occur, but I suspect we have not yet seen the bottom. It’s possible to win the war, but be prepared for battle weariness and uncertainty.Cathie Wood buys stocks like someone who just started yesterday, says Jim CramerCramers comments were aired on February 17, 2022 and are worth watching again. He is not shy of hyperbole nor controversy. Yet, this time he outlines clearly a professional money managers required skillset and where Cathy Wood falls short.Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett describe the current market mania“People who know nothing about stocks being advised by stockbrokers who know even less”, April 30, 2022.Mohamed El-Erian updates thoughts on the interest rate environment - April 29, 2022Today, yields on Treasury Bonds at the 5, 10 and 30 year maturity breached 3%. It is as much a psychological barrier as a practical one given that 30 year mortgage rates are above 5% already. The probability of recession is increasing. The only real questions left are when will the economy slow significantly, how bad will it be, and for how long will it last. The Federal Open Market Committee will meet this week and is widely expected to increase interest rates by 1/2% (50 basis points). My instinct puts the probability of a 50bps rise at 60%, 25bps at 20% or 75bps at 20%.About The Author And Podcast HostFollowing a 25 year career in capital markets, Tom Levine founded Zero Hour Group in 2014.The Los Angeles, California-based firm provides consulting, strategic analysis, and real estate services. “Past performance is not indicative of future results.” It's a common phrase that you'll see on a lot of investment material but its implications are often missed by investors. Chasing performance is what happens when you see a stock or sector performing well or other investors reaping big rewards so you decide to buy in at the high levels. It's not at all a new phenomenon as there are always stocks with new and exciting stories inducing the fear of missing out. In this episode, Marcelo and Keith explore what chasing performance looks like, examples from the last two years that have trapped investors and destroyed capital, why many investors end up chasing performance, why money-weighted returns are important and how to avoid chasing performance. Thank you for listening! Key Topics: Introducing today's topic (1:58) Why many investors are pulled towards chasing performance (3:04) What it means to chase performance (4:04) Why it's important to share real-world stories about the impact of chasing performance (5:51) The emotional pull towards exciting narratives and being part of a successful group (7:03) The amplifying effect of social media (8:00) Why chasing is dangerous for your portfolio (9:53) The declining performance of disruptive technology stocks over the past 18 months (10:38) How strong narratives are reflected in the stock prices for certain sectors (12:10) Comparing the performance of blue-chip stocks and disruptive securities (15:46) The disappointing journey of marijuana stocks in Canada (18:03) Chasing performance in the 1990s (21:25) The effectiveness of diversifying with The ARK Innovation ETF (22:48) Why you need to understand money-weighted returns (25:05) The problem with a “core and explore” portfolio strategy (27:00) How Sir Isaac Newton lost his fortune chasing performance in the early 1700s (27:53) Strategies you can use to avoid the lure of chasing performance (31:21) And much more!
Robin Powell interviews Larry Swedroe about Cathie Wood, the high-profile Wall Street fund manager who is currently making the headlines for all the wrong wrong reasons. Her flagship ARK Innovation ETF ended 2021 in a 40% drawdown that only worsened to nearly 50% in the first few days of January. So, is Cathie's Ark sinking? What, if anything, should Ark investors do now? Do Ark's current problems tell us anything about the current state of the global equity markets? And what are the lessons to learn for investors generally?

Of beter gezegd was Cathie Wood.

What did Steve D get for his birthday? What does Paul think of the Lion King? And why does Steve W think Corning is a transparent company? Find out in this week's Playing FTSE podcast! This week, we start off with a game from Steve D. Paul and Steve W take random pairs of stocks and try to figure out which has the highest TRAILING EPS. This one's a high scoring one as Paul and Steve W reason, remember, and wildly guess their way through acquisitions, stock splits, and twenty numbers to remember. Some of these are easier than others—see how you get on. More importantly, see how you get on with the Netflix vs. Visa question. “WOW” says Paul… With the game out of the way, it's onto a semiconductor special. We start off with the latest developments in the story concerning Nvidia's attempt to buy ARM Holdings. Led by new antitrust enthusiast Lina Khan, the FTC has sued to stop Nvidia from acquiring ARM on the grounds that it might unfairly stifle competition with other chip manufacturers. Steve W takes baby steps in figuring out exactly what ARM does, Paul thinks about the implications for Nvidia, and Steve D ponders the possibility of a future ARM IPO and the prospects of owning shares if the company appears on the LSE. In contrast to Nvidia, Intel has been lagging somewhat lately. Underperforming shares and a general struggle to innovate has caused the X86 outfit to lose ground to its rivals. But this week, the company announced an intention to spin off self-driving car unit Mobileye—arguably the most promising aspect of the company at the moment. With the intention of improving “visibility” for Mobileye, both in terms of investment and in terms of attracting talent, Intel are letting the company trade separately whilst retaining a controlling interest. Paul runs us through the difference between Intel's Mobileye and Tesla's FSD as the Steves take opposite views on the wisdom of the move from Intel. Who loves it and who hates it? Find out here! Lastly, we have a look at the new ETF from ARK. With their flagship ARK Innovation ETF down 22.6% over the last 12 months against a 29% gain for the S&P 500 (figures correct at the time of writing) ARK have launched a new ETF focused on the most transparent companies. Paul looks through the holdings and investigates how closely the fund is tied to the index it purports to track. Steve W wonders why ARK weren't doing this sooner. And Steve D reflects on the run that ARK have had this year. Support the show: There are many ways to help support the show, liking, commenting and sharing our episodes with friends! ARK Invest founder and CEO Cathie Wood explains why she thinks ARK's funds should be more valuable over the next five years despite a recent dip in tech shares. Wood's flagship fund, ARK Innovation ETF, is down nearly 15% in 2021 while the S&P 500 is up 25%. Retailers Nordstrom and Gap both saw their quarterly results fall short and their shares prices hit by supply-chain disruptions even as more customers returned to their physical stores. Today's slide deck: https://bit.ly/3zFEs0R - The ugly sell-off in Chinese stocks deepened again in late Asian trading after trying to hold a line of support earlier in the session, as the Chinese crackdown on key online companies and industries has lead to an exodus of investors, among those Cathie Wood of the popular Ark Innovation ETF, who announced that she has virtually eliminated Chinese stocks from the funds holdings. The disconnect with US equities, which closed again yesterday near the all-time highs is stark and perhaps unsustainable as the very largest of US companies are set to report in coming days. Key FX stories and pivotal questions as we exit this month also on today's pod, hosted by John J. Hardy. Intro and outro music by AShamaluevMusic

10-year bond yields touched their lowest level since early March today, and the Chart Master says there's a bigger collapse coming. Carter Worth lays out his case for where rates are going from here. Plus Cathie Wood's flagship ARK Innovation ETF is at a critical juncture. Where the traders see the growth trade going from here.
The growth of ARK investments has been one of the biggest stories of the past decade in the ETF space. its flagship fund, the ARK Innovation ETF has seen its asset explode over the past year or so. In January of 2020 the fund had about $1.8B in assets and at the peak earlier this year the fund was at $27B. But many in the investing community have worried that the firm's rapid growth and concentrated approach to investing could have a significant downside if investor sentiment turns against the stocks it owns and investors begin redeeming their shares in the fund. Some worry this could result in a cascading effect that could have major implications not only for ARK shareholders, but also for the market as a whole. In this episode we take a behind the scenes look at the ETF structure and how the way ETFs work could both contribute to and mitigate the possibility of this type of event. We hope you enjoy the discussion.

Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer and David Faber led off the show by discussing new inflation data’s impact on the markets: The Consumer Price Index up 4.2-percent from year-ago levels -- the fastest pace in 12 years. That news adding to this week's tech sell-off and impacting names from Apple to Tesla. Recent weakness continues for Cathie Wood's ARK Innovation ETF, which is now down more than a third from its February highs. The anchors explored what's next for the "Wood-Stocks" in that ETF -- and reacted to comments about inflation and growth stocks that Wood made at her firm's webinar. They also took a closer look at the impact from the Colonial Pipeline hack, resulting in gasoline shortages across the Southeast and long lines at gas pumps. Carl, Jim and David reacted to comments from Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, who said there’s no need for people to hoard gasoline because Colonial has said it is hoping for full restoration by the weekend. Also in focus: St. Louis Fed President James Bullard responds to billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller's criticism of the policymakers' approach to an economic rebound, the outlook for auto stocks such as Ford amid the global chip shortage, and sales of Tesla's made-in-China vehicles slumping 27% in April from March.

The anchors explored whether now's the time to buy some of the ETF's beaten-down components such as Zoom, Roku and Twilio. They also reacted to what billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller told CNBC about Fed policymakers -- he says they are failing to adjust to improved economic conditions by clinging to an emergency policy. Also in focus: The EPA's response to the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack and what it could mean for gas prices, Biotech firm Gingko Bioworks agreeing to go public in a $15-billion SPAC Deal, What the CEO of Simon Property Group is saying about earnings and what he's seeing from shoppers at the malls, and L Brands' decision to spin off Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works into two public companies.
