A few weeks ago, I posted a quick post- "Whatever you do, please don't cancel your plans." This messaging about the temptation to cancel plans and wait until we feel totally 'on' to participate in community resonated with many of you. I knew I was not alone. So, I took the conversation to the show to talk about my own tendency to easily cancel, and how saying yes even when I want to just stay home changed the way I see the purpose of community. Through this episode we'll touch on: • Exploring the tendency to cancel plans when feeling vulnerable • The significance of showing up as you are, all of it! • How staying home is actually not the safer option• The truth about loneliness in our lives, and the empowering truth on the other side This year can come with a new story for you, for us. For friendship, for community, for our hearts and families. Tune in to this episode, I bet there's something in here that may be just what you need to hear. -----Participate in our listener poll for 15 minutes by sending us a quick message @gatherintentionalliving or email Kayty@gatherintentionalliving.com- open to the first 10 of you to reach out! I always felt messy talking about loneliness in adulthood. This past week I was just curious (even though I knew the answer) how many adults would say they feel lonely and long for friendship. 85% of people polled, hundreds and hundreds of people said YEP, ME! I was not surprised...but surprised. It was hard to see those numbers, yet I was thankful for the honesty. It made me realize, it's time that we talk more about this. Through this conversation we will be chatting through a conversation we've been having on our Instagram @gatherintentionalliving. What my loneliness in adulthood taught me about community and hospitality. 1: If you're lonely your not alone 2: We're all waiting for an invitation 3: People can be lonely in a crowd 4: It's possible you're not a great friend 5: Hospitality is a big part of the answer If this conversation resonates with you we would love if you headed over to our page and left a comment to continue the conversation! My stomach sank...*You should talk about that on a podcast episode* my friend said as we were talking on my front porch* "So many people would relate to that", she continued. I ran on over to my stories and quickly typed: "Would you be interested in a conversation on navigating social anxiety, depression and panic attacks as a host/guest?" FULLY anticipating that I would delete the story seconds later... HUNDREDS of votes came in for YES! My follow up question sealed the deal for me: "Who do you want this information for- You, a community member or both." If you couldn't guess already BOTH was the winner by a long shot. So many of us are facing these very things and the problem is, we're not talking about them. The problem is we don't have the tools to deal, there's so much shame behind it and in turn, more often then not we end up isolated or lonely. Let's change that. Let's make room. Through this episode I will be talking to both the guest and host that deals with anxiety, depression and panic. Also, to the host who doesn't face these things but wants to learn how to embrace guests who do, well. Join me for a vulnerable, and eye opening conversation on a topic that should be talked about more. A topic that we are making room for here, especially as we prepare for the holiday season.

Podcast guest 521 is Kayt Raymond. During this podcast we talked about her angel experiences, how she paints angels and what angels what you to know. Kayt is an intuitive – an angel communicator receiving words and paintings in her heart knowing and sharing what is given. Kayt paints in her studio which is surrounded by a garden. Her painting style is spiritually inspired realism and the paintings are in watercolor. Each Angelic imbeds its frequency into the painting as it is being created. So when we see these sacred embodiments our hearts are drawn to the frequency of the Angel we need. 'What should I serve guests with dietary restrictions' Over the past few months, this has without a question been our most commonly asked question! Let's be honest, it can be intimidating! After years of eating, cooking and catering gluten and dairy free myself, I have learned quite a bit along the way. Through this Date with Kayt we will talk through: -How the way we talk about and serve special diet foods can divide a table...and how to make sure that doesn't happen. -How to use the recipes you already love to serve special diet guests -Checking labels and being cautious about hidden gluten and dairy in common products -4 gluten and dairy free menu options with flavor packed and hearty meals that everyone can eat, and everyone will enjoy! Curious about where to find certain ingredients or could you use help with an upcoming menu? Email us at Ciao@Gatherintentionalliving.com and we'll include some of the questions in the next episode!
* This Episode is not suitable for little ears* This past week a question came into our inbox: " How do I host someone at my house that is 'creepy' with my kids" ...The question also included red flags that I believe many of you are facing and likely wondering how to deal with at your table. Through this conversation I will bring to the table what I believe will be the start of a series on this show. While I am an advocate for open door hospitality, it is critical to know the warning signs. My hope through this is not that you build unnecessary walls, but rather feel well prepared and informed on how to keep your table one of celebrating and health. You can expect to hear: What the risks are of exposing children to potentially risky behavior in adults How to approach these situations if they are family Next steps if you need to set boundaries or if you believe harm has already been done In this conversation I will be straight with you, because truthfully, this is for the safety of your home and your children. I hope that through this conversation you feel that this is a safe space to have this conversation and that you don't feel panicked but instead, prepared. As we work to prepare you for everyday hospitality, we know that this is a small, but critical, part of the whole.
Each month I lead one episode to dive deeper into hospitality, community, relationship and intentional living. This episode is one that was brewing in my heart all month, and finally I was able to put it to words! It is very likely that you have had both of these experiences:- Leaving an event feeling more disconnected than when you walked in & - Leaving an interaction feeling deeply seen and craving more time togetherWe live in a time where we are more connected than ever, yet, lonelier than ever. What this tells me is that it's time to say, 'something needs to change.' Through various observations in our hospitality culture, my own community and experiences I have realized that there are 6 things we can do to make people feel more...seen. While the epidemic of loneliness is deeply rooted, these small changes and steps can make a lasting ripple effect. - Replacing the phrase "It's not my place" - How to make connections with people you see often in public - Extending unlikely invites - Eye contact- Introducing your guests to one another - Added personalization in the details Can you imagine what that would look like, if we went first to make people feel seen? I can, because I have been through the receiving end, and it's powerful! Let's make the decision today to make these few small changes, and go first.

So many of us, without even realizing it, are doing the adult equivalent of walking across the cafeteria with our head down. I have come to learn that the way we communicate and act with the people around us either flashes an "I'm available and interested in friendship" signal Or "steer clear-not interested" siren. Through my own journey to friendship and deeper connection I came to learn that some of my own patterns gave the wrong signal and perpetuated loneliness and disconnection. Here are 5 Ways to Grow & Show Interest in Friendships/Relationships: 1: Be specific in Making Plans: The next time you say "let's get together", take out your calendar and make a date! I find that often we are being too courteous of the other person, which in turn leaves us both waiting for an invitation. Give yourself permission to show interest by making a plan AND trusting that the other person will set a boundary and be honest if they need to. 2: Remember & Acknowledge Milestones: When you are with someone you are trying to grow a relationship with and you hear them reference an important date...take out your calendar, write it down and set an alert! When you see the alert, send flowers, send a text, show up- whatever it looks like! By celebrating when friends celebrate, and mourning when they mourn shows commitment. 3: Be Mindful of Communication Response Times: This can be touchy, hear me out! Life is full, some seasons we are more responsive than others. Truthfully, I've been more delayed than I'd like these days. However we need to keep in mind...not responding- sends messages. Think of it like a dating relationship. If you thought you had a good first date and you don't hear back for a week, you assume they aren't interested (even, if maybe that's not true). Try to use phrases like "Hey, I see your message it's a busy week but I'll answer soon" to keep things clear and growing 4: Being Authentic & Vulnerable: What do we all ask when we see each other, "Hey, how's it going." We have been conditioned to answer it with non-genuine answers. My challenge for us is to slowly and steadily allow ourselves to be more honest with those around us. To share more about what is really happening with life, work, family etc. Sometimes vulnerability can land flat. However what I'm finding is that over time authenticity invites more authenticity. When this isn't present in relationships, they stay at the surface. However, when we allow the roots to go deeper, the relationship grows stronger. 5: GO FIRST: We live in a culture where we are all waiting to be asked. There is a value shift in life where kids are praised for going up to 'random people' and making friends, while adults are shamed for that very thing. If you are picking up on friend chemistry, likely you're spot on! Keep friendships growing by allowing yourself to respond to these very inner inklings. Be the one who extends the invitation, sends the text and shows up. The community that we long for and the community that we need...starts with us! Join us for this rich conversion on this weeks Date with Kayt.

In 1996, Kayt Raymond's life was profoundly changed by meeting a group of angels. Though not an artist, she was invited to paint and write with these beings and was taught how to commune and co-create with them as colleagues and friends. She is known as an angel communicator. With a career in corporate strategy and coaching leaders, Kayt also offers Angel Consults to people who want to have a conversation with angels on questions, issues, and opportunities in life, work, relationships, finances, business, creativity, and more. In this episode, Rev. Carol and Kayt have a delightful conversation about angels, guardian angels, archangels, and spirit guides, and how they can help us. Welcome to Spirit Sisters, with Karina Machado. My guest today is intuitive and angel communicator, Kayt Raymond. Kayt studied piano, clarinet, voice and choral conducting at the Conservatorium in Newcastle, Australia, and later on scholarship at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. It was here that she met Jean, a spiritual mentor who revealed that angels had told her about Kayt's arrival a year earlier. Jean even showed Kayt the page in her spiritual journal where she'd documented the message. All a hint, perhaps, that the angels had great plans in store for the young Australian musician. Kayt went on to work as a corporate executive and later as a consultant based in Sydney. In 1996, Kayt met a group of Angels and her life was transformed. They invited her to connect with them and paint them. Though not an artist she began to paint with these beings and was taught how to commune and co-create with them as colleagues and friends. It's such a fascinating story – a musician turned corporate high-flyer who accepts the Angels' invitation, even if it means having to start from scratch learning how to paint as well as somehow making this new calling fit in with her everyday life. Enjoy my conversation with Kayt Raymond. At the end, Kayt shares a beautiful message from the angels that she received just for us. It's very special. This week on the podcast, the lads are joined by Jersey City artist and comic Kayt Hester for an almost stream of conscious conversation. Dan goes in DEEP on crime drama fiction thriller "The Murder Of Nicole Brown Simpson" (yep, that's a film that does exist), a film directed by the same clown who directed "The Haunting of Sharon Tate". Oh boy, is that a doozy? Discussions also include first time concerts, THAT terrible inauguration painting, open mic pet peeves, Dan's awful Beach Boys experience, Andre The Giant's brother being an Uber driver, terrible modern art paintings, Cannibal Holocaust, Kayt's experience with Richard Dweck, hating Mike Love and much much more. In this episode of AMP Up Your Digital Marketing, Glenn Gaudet speaks with Kayt Leonard, the public relations manager at PSI CRO. They talk about what executing marketing campaigns looks like when working in a highly regulated, highly targeted, and highly misunderstood industry. Clinical trials are an integral part of health care, but they’re often misunderstood. (Thanks, Hollywood.) At any given time, there are hundreds of thousands of clinical trials registered across the world. Each one needs a specific number of participants who meet a specific set of criteria. As the PR manager of PSI CRO, it’s Kayt Leonard’s job to find these participants. “There's no template we have,” Kayt says. “There's no ability to look through previous campaigns and see, ‘All right, this patient population worked; these advertisements and keywords worked.’ We really build out every single campaign and every single persona as if it's the first time we've ever done it.”
We finally found a millennial who hasn't seen the iconic movie that made horror host Trav and Producer Kate's childhood. We're talking about Wes Craven's Scream from 1996. Kayt Sukel talks to Shannon Fisher about her book, This is Your Brain on Sex: the Science Behind the Search for Love. The book is an in-depth exploration of the neurobiology that contributes to human bonding and feelings of love, especially romantic love. Both informative and entertaining, This is Your Brain on Sex offers a glimpse into why we behave the way we do - and the amount control we actually have over our own actions and reactions to stimuli. Based in Houston, TX, Kayt's work has appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, New Scientist, and National Geographic Traveler. She has also just released a new book in a similar vein to the one discussed in this show, The Art of Risk: the New Science of Courage, Caution & Chance. The Authentic Woman with Shannon Fisher explores personal, political, and societal perspectives of the female experience in America. The show delves deeply into the worlds of women writers, artists, celebrities, and community leaders and offers listeners food for thought on ways to better themselves and the world around them. “Our deepest (and fastest) yearnings can be tempered by reason and experience; our more prudent judgments softened by desire and need.” ― Kayt Sukel Philosophers, theologians, artists, and boy bands have waxed poetic about the nature of love for centuries. But what does the brain have to say about the way we carry our hearts? As technology advances to allow us a more focused examination of the intricate dance our brains do with our environment, we can use science to shed new light on humanity's oldest question, “What is this thing called love?” Today's guest dived into the latest neuroscientific research concerning love and sex and what it really means for the way we approach our relationships. Her book This Is Your Brain on Sex: The Science Behind the Search for Love/Dirty Minds: How Our Brains Influence Love, Sex, and Relationships asks age-old questions such as: What parts of the brain are involved with love? Is there really a “seven-year itch”? Why do good girls like bad boys? Is monogamy practical? How thin is that line between love and hate? Do mothers have a stronger bond with children than their fathers do? How do our childhood experiences affect our emotional control and who is at risk for love addiction? We welcome author Kayt Sukel More about Kayt here: http://kaytsukel.com/

The progressive christian arena it scattered with the term, deconstruction. It’s often tossed around without any context. Just about every blogger, podcaster, or influencer speaking about “progressive Christianity” is using the term. For more on “deconstruction” in a theological context, I wrote an article and linked to a helpful video here on Farminggod.org . Having grown up in a rigid Christian setting in Oklahoma, Kayt Johnson (@KaytJohnson) entered the non profit world to pursue her calling. After a 2 year fast and a variety of missionary work, her Christian conviction became less certain. Kayt is now involved in a host of creative ventures. Possibly more valuable than her creative ability is her willingness to engage tough questions. And that is where this interview begins.

What happens to our brains when we take risks? How do successful risk-takers process information? Do they look at risk any differently? What does the science of risk-taking tell us? Meet Kayt Sukel, author of The Art of Risk: The New Science of Courage, Caution and Chance. Kayt is a science writer and traveller who “has no problem tacking interesting and often taboo subjects spanning love, sex, neuroscience and politics.” Her work has appeared in Atlantic Monthly, New Scientist, The Washington Post and National Geographic Traveller. In the Art of Risk, Kayt studies “risk-takers” of various vocations – from base jumpers to fire fighters. We talk about this, and the conversation brings up loads of great stuff around diligent practice and hard work, decision-making, and how we can all get better at taking risks. But – there's more to Kayt than this. According to Forbes magazine, Kayt “knows more about sex than you or I do.” Her first book is titled Dirty Minds: How Our Brains Influence Love, Sex, and Relationships (retitled This is Your Brain on Sex: The Science Behind the Search for Love). So, as you would do with anyone you speak to the first time, we talk about sex – that's the beauty of podcasting! Along the way we touch on a range of fascinating topics: Pop science; How the brain works; The nervous system; Decision-making; Gut feelings; And much more! If you like what we do then buy us a Ko-Fi Good Water by Kayt Peck Book Clips Welcome to Book Clips, the mini podcast where authors and narrators give you a taste of a book with a short snippet. Synopsis The dry plains drew Judy Proctor like a bear to her den…or a moth to the flame. Ranching was her life. The sweat as she branded or “doctored” cattle…the howl of a coyote in the quiet, night air ... half-frozen fingers as she cut the wire to loosen hay bales for hungry cattle scratching for survival in snow-covered land…all of the everyday existence on the ranch was her life. It was where she belonged. It was a lonely life. She had tried to leave the ranch to join the “normal” existence of a talented young woman in the city, but it had never been home. When her parents were killed in an automobile accident, she returned to the family ranch as much because she needed it as it needed her. She faced a lonely life to be shared with no better company than Somegood and Useless, her cow dog and the mottled mutt that were her companions. Kathleen Romero slipped into Judy’s life unexpectedly. She came to the plains to write a story. Would she stay because of the real truth she found in the simple drama of husbanding land and animals? Unfortunately, even wide-open spaces can be plagued by prejudice and closed-minds. As the two women struggle to know each other, they must also carve a place for themselves among the country-folk who have been Judy’s friends and neighbors her entire life. Kayt Sukel Are risk-takers born or made? Kayt Sukel uses cutting-edge research to illustrate which parts of the brain drive behavior, the different genes and neurochemicals at play, and the “particular blend of biology and experience held within that allows us to know what risks are worth taking and what risks should be left alone.”She shows us the fascinating neurological pathways that provide the “gas” and the “brakes” when we are faced with a risky decision. And she shares human interest stories from the boardroom, the classroom, the playing field, and military frontlines.Marrying the knowledge of science with the wisdom of those who have played the game and won--professional poker players, female firefighters, top neurosurgeons--Kayt gives us a few key rules to reset our definitions of risk and shows how to put artful risk-taking into action. Jumping off a bridge is certainly taking a risk and it appears that risk taking is actually good for you. Science has shown that risk taking is actually healthy. Author Kayt Sukel takes a look at how risk taking can improve your health in her new book The Art of Risk Taking. Kayt joins Mark Alyn on Late Night Health to discuss her adventurous life and how risk taking has always been a major part of living for her. While not advocating Bungee jumping for everyone, Kayt does say risk is a major part of life. Just walking across the street there is the possibility of being hit by a bus. Staying in doors and never leaving your home involves the risk of your roof falling down on you. Kayt relays a story about being with a friend when a car crashed into the front of the house. As we've said, risk is simply part of life. The idea is to take risks that work to your advantage and actually your enhance life. Mark and Kayt discuss risk taking that can be the difference between missing out and making it big. To understand how to take risk, you need to set a personal definition. Everybody has a different view of what risk is all about. Teenagers are more apt to risk, because it's part of learning and growing up. Older folk may not risk financially like they did when they were younger. Women, when not financial in nature, may be bigger risk takers than men. Combining science with stories of risk takers, Kayt helps people reshape their lives by examining their lives and assessing how risk can work to make their lives better. Kayt admits her risk taking has slowed down. As a mom (her biggest risk) she doesn't do the adventurous travel and extreme sports she once enjoyed

As a mom (her biggest risk) she doesn't do the adventurous travel and extreme sports she once enjoyed. air date: 7/29/16

On today's show, I talk with a passionate traveler and science writer from Houston, Texas by the name of Kayt Sukel. Some of the topics that she often talks about range from love to politics to sex to neuroscience and everything in between. Her work has appeared in USA Today, The Washington Post, National Geographic Traveler, and several other well-known publications. She's the author of two books, she does public speaking at events like TEDMED, she claims to overshare on Twitter, and if you asked Forbes, they would say she knows more about sex than you do. We take electricity for granted and do not think of where it comes from when we switch on a light or use an electrical appliance. But behind the electricity coming out of a wall socket lays an entire energy landscape of poles, wires, electrical substations and power stations. It is imposed on the landscape like a gigantic web, a grid that has become almost part of the natural scenery. Just over a century ago this electricity grid did not exist. Power generation was local or at best regional and often based on the burning of coal or the use of locally produced gas. In less than a century the grid covered the entire United Kingdom and many other countries. It revolutionised our lives, the way we worked and it made air in cities a whole lot cleaner. But how did the development of this energy landscape impact on the landscape and environment? What were the social and economic consequences of the expansion of the grid? This history is now researched by Cambridge based PhD candidate Kayt Button. Her project is part of the British Arts and Humanities Research Council funded environmental history initiative “The Power and the Water: Connecting Pasts with Futures”, that focuses on environmental connectivities that have emerged in Britain since industrialisation. Episode 66 of the Exploring Environmental History podcast features Kayt’s work and discusses the development of the UK National Grid, and how it changed people’s lives, its environmental impacts and how the past informs the future development of the grid.
