Using Medical AI to Accelerate the Prior Approval Process with Kim Perry emtelligent TRANSCRIPT

Empowered Patient Podcast

Kim Perry, Chief Growth Officer at emtelligent, focuses on using medical AI in the prior authorization process to structure unstructured medical text in patient records, making whole record healthcare possible. AI can be used to extract relevant information from faxed or PDF medical records, saving time and improving efficiency over existing manual processes. For payers, there is potential for medical AI to address other processes such as risk adjustment, care management, quality measures, and payment integrity in an environment still lacking interoperability and reliant on highly trained humans.  Kim explains, "For prior authorization in particular, well over 50% of our prior authorizations here in this country are manual. And that means once a prior authorization is submitted for a request for a procedure or a specialty drug, it's a cue for a clinician to review. And part of that review process is to pull a patient's record." "Unfortunately, because of the lack of interoperability in the healthcare ecosystem, that record is often a fax and a PDF, which could be hundreds of pages. So, the clinician is tasked to manually read through that PDF to find the clinically relevant information to help them deny or approve the prior authorization. So, what they're doing here is using AI to pull out the relevant information at the time that's needed so the clinician doesn't have to manually read through all hundreds of pages looking for the needle in the haystack, if you will, of the information that they're looking for to solve that problem in that point in time."   "I think people assume that with the adoption of EMRs, everything will be digital. But again, due to the lack of interoperability or the lack of payers, in this case, getting direct access into the EMRs for the clinical data, there has to be a way to transmit the information, the relevant information. And often, as I mentioned, it's fax-based. The health systems or the providers are faxing over medical records to the payers. Today, the payers are forced to do that manual review because they haven't had the tools available to them until now to help them apply technology to that manual review process." #emtelligent #PriorAuthorization #MedicalAI #ArtificialIntelligence #HealthcareInnovations #CMS #LLM #LargeLanguageModels #ClinicalData #EHR #FutureofHealthcare emtelligent.com Listen to the podcast here

A stroke happens when there is a sudden blockage of blood flow to the brain or bleeding in the brain, which can result in symptoms such as numbness or weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, or dizziness. The type of symptoms one might experience depends largely on the type of stroke, and the area of the brain affected. But one thing is clear – despite the many advances in stroke care over the past 30 years, it's women who often suffer the most.  In today's episode, we discuss why women are more susceptible to stroke, what the unique risk factors are, and what women need more of to help them recover, not only from the medical condition, but the impacts to their careers, their mental health and their families. Featuring: Dr. Aleksandra Pikula, MD, PhD, is a neurologist and clinician-investigator at UHN's Krembil Brain Institute and the newly appointed Jay and Sari Sonshine Chair in Stroke Prevention and Cerebrovascular Brain Health at UHN. Dr. Pikula advocates for a holistic approach to brain care, specifically targeting stroke and dementia prevention during midlife through evidence-based lifestyle medicine pillars.Patrice Lindsay, PhD, is currently the Lead for the People With Lived Experience (PWLE) Engagement and Stroke Strategy at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Dr. Lindsay leads strategic directions for health systems design and change for people with stroke and heart conditions across Canada and internationally. Have you ever heard of a genetic condition called neurofibromatosis, also known as NF?It's one of the most common genetic disorders, affecting about 1 in 3000 people globally. NF causes different types of tumours to form in various parts of the body. Because so little is known about the condition, it's often misdiagnosed, or not diagnosed at all. UHN is home to the Elisabeth Raab Neurofibromatosis Clinic, the only adult NF clinic in Canada. We discuss the clinic and the exciting research happening in the field of NF. In a sweeping 2023 report, the US Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy, declared loneliness an epidemic and a public health emergency. According to the report, loneliness and isolation can lead to a significant increase in mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression, as well as a nearly 30% increased risk of heart disease, stroke and among older adults, a 50% risk of dementia.Around the world, there are efforts to help people cope with loneliness. In the Netherlands, one grocery store chain has introduced ‘chat check outs' where customers can take their time and socialize – part of a government initiative to address the growing issue of isolation. There are also a number of apps to help introduce you to your neighbours anywhere you live in the world. And a recent story in The Globe and Mail profiled a woman who rents her time out to those needing a dinner companion, a study buddy, or a listening ear. She's seen more than 60 clients so far. As many of you know, prior to my big shift into the marketing world, I worked with a lot of moms as a personal trainer, and as a mother myself, I know the importance of finding trustworthy sources that you can adapt to your own specific needs. The truth is: up until a few years ago, finding a space for pregnancy workouts that was more than prenatal yoga but not as intense as workouts meant for bulking and shredding. Thankfully prenatal workouts have come a long way, and pregnant people have more great choices than ever before. Joining me today to unpack that fit pregnancy journey the industry has taken is Kim Perry. Kim is a mom of three, and we dive into all sorts of myths and expectations that pregnant women face when it comes to both health and wellness as well as navigating the fitness industry. It was my pleasure and privilege to invite her on, compare our fitbiz journeys, and hear how she helps expectant mothers stay fit and healthy. Kim joins me to talk about:- The wide variety of options pregnant people have nowadays in everything from nutrition to exercise to how they go through labor.- Having easily attainable goals while pregnant and how important those become during some of the more challenging times.- How stretching can make all the difference heading into labor. Don't forget to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts. About Today's Guest Kim Perry is an entrepreneur, fit pregnancy coach, mom of three, and strong believer that new and expecting moms can be both fit and happy. After becoming Pre/Post-Natal Certified, she began to share her workouts online and slowly built a close knit community. She went from recording and editing videos in her basement at 5am before work to eventually quitting her full-time teaching job. Whole Foods Market Targeted by Organic Advocates The U.S.-based Organic Consumers Association is the largest of its kind in the United States – representing thousands of supporters of organic food. Over the past year, the organization has taken a strong stance against grocery giant Whole Foods Market, calling upon them to “walk their talk” and increase their support for organic products, which, as Executive Director Ronnie Cummins describes, exists in the shadows of the majority of the company’s products, which are conventionally produced and disguised as “natural” foods. This segment courtesy of Vancouver Co-op Radio’s (CFRO) Redeye. Local Food System Development Spotlight The National Farmers Union Local 316 alongside like-minded organizations and residents of the region in and around Kingston, Ontario have been successfully building a strong local food movement. In November 2008, farmer, entrepreneur and member of the NFU Kim Perry shared the successes to date and the actions taken within the region to generate support for a resilient local food system. Carnivore Chic (encore) A revisiting of our July 2008 interview with Toronto author Susan Bourette of “Carnivore Chic – From Pasture to Plate, The Search for the Perfect Meat”. While working for The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business magazine, Susan went undercover at the largest slaughterhouse for hogs in Canada located in Brandon, Manitoba and owned by Maple Leaf Foods. Susan’s subsequent article for the magazine, her eventual book Carnivore Chic and this interview, all aired before the nation-wide listeria contamination of Maple Leaf food products occurred and which led to the death of 22 people and left many more ill. While working inside the plant, Susan became disturbed at the state in which animals and workers are treated within the industry, leading her to wonder if meat had completely lost its cultural significance. Voices/Guests Ronnie Cummins – executive director, Organic Consumers Association (Finland, ME) – The Organic Consumers Association (OCA), formed in 1998, is an online and grassroots non-profit public interest organization campaigning for “health, justice, and sustainability”. The OCA deals with crucial issues of food safety, industrial agriculture, genetic engineering, children’s health, corporate accountability, Fair Trade, environmental sustainability and other key topics. They are the only organization in the US focused exclusively on promoting the views and interests of the nation’s estimated 50 million organic and socially responsible consumers. The OCA represents over 850,000 members, subscribers and volunteers, including several thousand businesses in the natural foods and organic marketplace. Kim Perry, director, National Farmers Union Local 316 (Harrowsmith, ON) – Kim was born and raised in New Brunswick and in 2001 became a member of the National Farmers Union and their Local 316. Her and her husband Dave operate Perry Maine-Anjou Farms in the community of Harrowsmith, Ontario, and they own a small local food store called Local Family Farms in the community of Verona. Kim is actively involved in encouraging local food system development in the area in and around Kingston, Ontario. Susan Bourette, author, Carnivore Chic (Toronto, ON) – Susan is an award-winning writer with a reputation for investigative journalism. Formerly a reporter for The Globe and Mail, she is now a freelance writer.
