In early 2021, hackers infiltrated the software that controlled the city's water supply in Oldsmar, Florida. Through dumb luck, they caught the intrusion shortly after the hacker tried to poison the city's water.   This hack was part of a growing array of attacks against the Internet of Things, objects that used to operate offline but are now connected to the internet—and therefore vulnerable to hacking. From Wi-Fi enabled tea kettles to cars that can be taken over remotely to knocking power out for entire countries using smart thermostats, the risks are everywhere. Post By: Adam Turteltaub Everywhere we look there are now devices that can be connected to the internet.  Around our homes there are security systems, lights, and even refrigerators.  In the workplace it spans most everything, from medical devices to HVAC systems. As Scott Giordano, Senior Counsel, Privacy & Compliance at Spirion explains in this podcast, with the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) and all that connectivity comes an enormous amount of risk.  The vulnerabilities begin, he notes, with the devices themselves, which often were not built with security in mind.  They provide an opening for hackers, even through something as seemingly innocuous as the thermostat in a fish tank. To manage the risk, Giordano recommends screening vendors to ask how they are protecting the devices that they are attaching to your system.  Do so via a short questionnaire that you go through question by question with the vendor, thereby avoiding a check the box exercise. He also recommends auditing the data your organization houses to determine what information you have, what is sensitive and what data may no longer be needed.  An audit, he notes, typically identifies many more data storehouses than an organization thinks it has.  Often this problem is caused by the  proliferation of applications used in organizations, many of which communicate with each other and start storing data on their own. On an ongoing basis it is important, he observes, to stay on top of what devices are added to your system and to regularly update your asset inventory.  And don’t lose track of the risks of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies.  All those apps on phones are collecting data, too. Controls are also key to ensure that no unauthorized devices are added.  Hand in hand with that is a need to understand the issue from the employee perspective.  If you make it too difficult for them to do their jobs, they will look to work arounds that can create more data security risk. There has been so much hype about contact tracing technology and how it will be the key to reopening the country. Google and Apple, for example, are building a system to track contact between people who might spread the disease. The idea is simple: since Bluetooth is constantly scanning for other devices, your phone can use wireless signals to see who you’ve been near. Somebody who gets a positive diagnosis can tell the app, which will inform everyone else who has been in proximity to alert them about risks of possible transmission. So basically, by using Bluetooth technology, our phones can exchange information on who you’ve been in contact with, and if you’ve been in the proximity of someone with Covid, your phone can alert you. This theoretically does away people’s worry about mass surveillance because no location or personal data are actually being recorded by the contact-tracing app – only bluetooth signals. But can this app live up to its promises? One study suggests that if contact tracers successfully detected 90% of symptomatic cases and reached 90% of their contacts it could reduce transmissions by more than 45%. But this will be difficult in regions still grappling with lots of new infections. Also, if not everyone in a given community uses the app, the efficacy will be significantly reduced. False positives and false negatives will also be significant challenges, and if the app falsely notifies people of their status, it could let the public lose faith in the technology and trust in public health officials. What's Worse!? We have a split decision on a scenario that involves a time limit. Hey, you're a CISO, what's your take on this? On Schneier's blog, he shared a study that examined whether freelance programmers hired online would write secure code, whether prompted to do it or not. The coders were paid a small pittance and it was unclear if they knew anything about security and surprise. In the end they didn't write secure code. While there are questions about the validity of this study, this does bring up an interesting question: Using a marketplace like Upwork or Freelance.com, how does one go about hiring a freelance coder that can write secure code? Ask a CISO Mark Toney of CrowdStrike asked, after the purchase and use of a security tool, does a CISO or CTO do a post-mortem to see if they got what they paid for? Mark wants to know are you looking at what was improved, where it was improved, and by how much it was improved?

This change makes an enormous difference, and will shake up our industry in many ways. First, data authentication and integrity will become more important than confidentiality. And second, our largely regulation-free Internet will become a thing of the past. Soon we will no longer have a choice between government regulation and no government regulation. Our choice is between smart government regulation and stupid government regulation. Given this future, it's vital that we look back at what we've learned from past attempts to secure these systems, and forward at what technologies, laws, regulations, economic incentives, and social norms we need to secure them in the future.
