It's the most O3L time of the year...always one of our favorite episodes, it's time for the O3L Holiday Party! Every year, we invite listeners from around the world to join us for a special taping full of fun, frivolity, games, friends, and lasting memories. And maybe...just maybe...the Christmas miracle of an Uncle Gregg rant or two. We had a room full of veteran partygoers this year - Julie from LA; Julio from Pueblo, Mexico; Kimberly from Downey, CA; Paul from Stockton, CA; and Tarah from Scottsdale, AZ. But just because you didn't attend the recording doesn't mean you're not invited to the party! Just press play to join in on the fun! This year, we asked our guests to bring their favorite "holiday party starter" song to the shindig. Plus, we play two brand new world famous O3L games: "That's Soooo '24," in which we ruin classic alternative song titles with 2024 slang words, and "Bandagrams," where we scramble up the letters of some of our favorite bands to hi-larious effect! Who will take the crown this year?! Plus: We talk new musical discoveries in 2024! Uncle Gregg shows off his tattoos (and gives plenty of life lessons)! Brett's got balls (and a psychedelic Santa hat)! O3L awards! Fruitcake...yay or nay? Cookies...or disappointment biscuits? Desserts with vegetables! Plus, new seasonal tunes: Swansea Sound - '(I Wanna Wear A) Mirrored Hat Like Slade' The Chesterfields - 'Last Train To Christmas' Glenn Erb - 'Santa's In Jail' Mike Browning - 'It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year' A skibidi time is guaranteed for all! Just like we used to do in Killarney. Happy Holidays from your friends at Only Three Lads! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

For nearly five decades Steve Dewitt has been the voice of Swansea. Having spent his life and career on Swansea Sound, hosting various shows before moving to BBC Radio Wales. In this weeks Radio Greats episode, Steve sits down with Luke to share his tales of the last five decades from doing odd jobs at Swansea Sound for the Programme Controller, to getting his own show. How he introduced a young Rob Brydon to the world of Radio, before moving over to BBC Radio Wales and how he nearly became a national voice during the Millennium Bug, returning back to Swansea Sound and becoming the last local "English" voice for Greatest Hits Radio South Wales and returning back to radio for the launch of SA Radio Live. Thanks to Steve, Aircheck Downloads, Radio Jingles Online and Shaun Tilley for the use of content.

This week, we're covering some of the finest female vocal performances and songs of the O3L era. But, as the ladies of Bananarama wisely imparted, "it ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it!" That's why we are thrilled to "do it" with indie pop giants Heavenly as our Third Lads this week: Amelia Fletcher, Rob Pursey, Pete Momtchiloff and Cathy Rogers! Heavenly are reuniting for a pair of sold out London shows this month to celebrate their ongoing reissue campaign on Skep Wax, and they were gracious enough to hang out with us to share music, memories and laughs with us. Heavenly was formed in Oxford, England in 1989, springing from one of the seminal UK indie bands of the '80s, Talulah Gosh. From 1990-1996, the group released four albums and a run of brilliant singles (mostly on Sarah Records), full of jangly twee pop sweetness with an occasional riot grrrl attitude. Following the untimely passing of drummer Matthew Fletcher, the surviving members regrouped as Marine Research for the terrific 1999 LP Sounds From The Gulf Stream. In the 21st century, Amelia and Rob have been involved in various musical projects including Sportique, Tender Trap, Caternary Wires and Swansea Sound, as well as running the Skep Wax label. Amelia is also an esteemed economist who has been appointed as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Pete has played in bands including Scarlet's Well (with Bid from Monochrome Set), Would-Be-Goods, and Tufthunter. Cathy has a PhD in Educational Neuroscience, and is well known as the creator, producer and host of the reality competition shows Scrapheap Challenge (UK) and Junkyard Wars (US). Plus: - In an exciting quiz game, find out if C really is Heavenly's option! - Being Tik Tok famous! - Riot grrrls and roller skates! - Dealing with "scary" managers! - Doing octopus impressions! - The art of peeling root vegetables! - Britcoms (well, and Aussie-coms)! - Gregg gets sensitive (but only for a moment)! - Cathy lays out some fresh rhymes! - Aging indie band looking for teens! - Hear the new single "Get Me" by Skep Wax artist Panic Pocket! For more information on Heavenly and other Skep Wax artists, go to: https://skepwax.bandcamp.com. O3L is a proud member of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Learn more about your ad choices.

Escuchar audio

Young Southpaw talks to Amelia Fletcher & Rob Pursey of Heavenly, Swansea Sound, The Catenary Wires (and many more bands) about Spinal Tap, mix tape mishaps, wearing togas, and much more. https://swanseasound.bandcamp.com/releaseshttps://thecatenarywires.bandcamp.com/https://www.instagram.com/heavenlyindie/ Young Southpaw: I was going to introduce you and list your bands but there’s like an infinite amount and they just seem to keep proliferating. So what ones are currently active? Rob Pursey: The main one is The Catenary Wires which is the two of us, recently joined by Andy Lewis who plays bass, Fay Hallam who plays keyboard, and Ian Button who plays drums. And all of those people have other musical lives as well, a lot of them more celebrated than ours. We’ve done two LPs and we’re just about to do a third one, nearly finished recording it. And then there’s Swansea Sound. This is a band that emerged during lockdown. What happened was I’d written some songs that were too fast and sort of punky really for The Catenary Wires, cause The Catenary Wires is a fairly melancholy outfit (Amelia laughs) Amelia Fletcher: We’re very melancholy. RP: And also I sing in The Catenary Wires and because my voice is low, I make any song sound melancholy even if it is fast. So we got in touch with Hue, who was Amelia’s friend more than mine because she sang in The Pooh Sticks back in the day, and Hue was the singer in The Pooh Sticks. And I thought he might wanna try singing it. And he did. He recorded the singing on his phone in a cupboard and sent it back to us and it sounded great. So we mixed the songs on the basis of that. And then put the first single out a few weeks ago. And there’s more in the pipeline. AF: There’s also one called European Sun, which is our friend Steve. Who writes great songs and didn’t know how to record them so we effectively arranged and recorded them for him. And then there’s Nancy Gaffield & The Drift. RP: It’s just The Drift. At the moment it’s got Nancy Gaffield with it but it won’t always. AF: Nancy Gaffield is a poet, and we basically do semi-improvised stuff, influenced by the rainy Kentish countryside in the background.

From history student to running one of the early commercial radio networks. In this hour of ‘Radio Moments – Conversations, Colin Mason tells of his move to the US where he indulged his love of radio whilst studying – and how he persuaded his way through the doors of local stations there. Back home, after a short spell at the BBC, he moved to TV as a continuity announcer before returning to the Corporation at BBC Radio Durham and Radio Bristol. As commercial radio began across the UK, Colin tells how it felt to set up the first station in Wales – Swansea Sound, before moving to launch Chiltern Radio as programme controller. As the Chiltern network grew into Northampton, Milton Keynes - and Wales and the South West on winning the regional licence, Colin headed the management team for 14 years. He opens up the struggle to retain control – and how it felt when his efforts were thwarted and the stations were bought by GWR. Colin also tells of his radio ventures whilst serving in the Forces -and those in his new home in the Channel Islands. He shares his thoughts too on the future of radio, and his philosophy – ‘This is showbiz – be an entertainer’. This is the Colin Mason story – in his own words.

Yn wreiddiol o Drawsfynydd, fe symudodd David Williams i'r Ganllwyd pan benodwyd ei dad yn brifathro yno. Symudodd y teulu i Seland Newydd pan oedd yn blentyn gan fod galw mawr am athrawon yno. Golygai hyn siwrnai 6 wythnos ar long. Pan oedd David Williams yn ei arddegau fe ddaeth y teulu yn ôl i Gymru ac fe aeth David ati i astudio newyddiaduraeth. Bu'n gweithio fel is-olygydd newyddion yn Swansea Sound, a rhwng 1977 ac 1987 roedd yn wyneb cyfarwydd ar ein sgriniau teledu fel gohebydd 'Wales Today' a 'Wales This Week' gydag ITV. Daeth David Williams i sylw'r wasg ryngwladol yn sgil ambell i stori yr aeth ar ei hol, a bu hefyd yn gyflwynydd y rhaglen deledu Dragon's Eye, oedd yn cadw llygad ar weithgareddau ym Mae Caerdydd.
Another AM/FM split, a little later than the rest, Swansea Sound divided on 30th September 1995, exactly 21 years after it had originally gone on air. Unlike most, the legacy brand remained on AM and the new 'brand' 'Sound Wave' (Now The Wave) debuted on FM. It was proud moment for Shaun Tilley.
