Joe and Allison are joined by Tomatometer-approved Rotten Tomatoes critics Nick and Joseph of Fish Jelly Film Reviews in this week's episode of Queer Cinema Catchup. Together, they unpack the 1959 film Suddenly, Last Summer based on the Tennessee Williams play; directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz; written by Gore Vidal, Mankiewicz, and Williams; and starring Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift.Listen as they discuss the behind-the-scenes queerness of this already queer movie (3:09); the central metaphor of the film and what it says about the implied queer identity of one of its major (albeit dead) characters (7:20); the deeper, darker implications of Elizabeth Taylor's famous white bathing suit (19:41); how the film got around the Hays Code (21:48); whether or not the coded and negative representation of the film is damaging (29:11); the connection between Tennessee Williams' personal history and the plot of the film (34:07); and how Katharine Hepburn's performance inspired Anthony Hopkins (39:50).Thanks very much to Joseph and Nick for joining us; you can hear more of their reviews on their youtube channel and podcast. For many showbiz families, it is the family business; and we are aware of the dynasties who have made Acting their focus across several generations. Some who trod the boards, are the ‘black sheep' of the family, who find their way without a single member guiding the way. So what are the challenges, or the advances, if any, of having your Mum lead the way. Belinda and Romy offer a unique insight and allow us to celebrate their significant talents. Belinda Giblin is one of Australia's most distinguished stage and screen actors. Her most recent theatre credits include “Amadeus” alongside Michael Sheen, and Melissa Bubnic's “Ghosting the Party” (Griffin Theatre). Other recent credits include “Blonde Poison” (Old Fitz, SOH, Southbank) “Doubt” (Old Fitz) Samuel Beckett's “Happy Days”(Old Fitz) for all of which she was nominated for Best Actress in an Independent production by the Sydney Theatre Critics' Circle Awards. On television Belinda has had regular roles in the series “Home and Away”; “Sons and Daughters”; “Heartbreak High”; “The Sullivans”; and “The Box “. Film credits include “ Peterson”, “Say you Want Me” for which she won a Sammy award, and an award winning short film “Stille Nacht”. Belinda appeared in an Independent feature film, “A Stitch in Time”(Sasha Hadden Productions) in 2022. Belinda is presently playing in ‘Suddenly Last Summer' at the Ensemble Theatre. Romy Bartz is an actor and director who graduated from NIDA. Since graduating she has performed in theatre productions such as ‘Hillbilly Thriller', ‘The Moors', ‘Mercury Fur', ‘Slaughterhouse', ‘Bull', ‘Idle Lies', ‘Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them' and ‘Thank You for Being a Friend'. Romy's television credits include ‘Reef Break', ‘The Politically Incorrect Parenting Show', ‘The Surgeon', ‘Love My Way', ‘Skool Sue', ‘White Collar Blue' and ‘Murder Under the Microscope'.The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Synopsis While many great composers have also been great conductors, this can be the exception rather than the rule. On today's date in 1959, the American composer Ned Rorem tried his hand at conducting the premiere of one of his own compositions, a chamber suite entitled “Eleven Studies for Eleven Players.” Rorem recalled: “I learned that the first requisite to becoming a conductor is an inborn lust for absolute monarchy, and that I, alone among musicians, never got the bug. I was terrified. The first rehearsal was a model of how NOT to inspire confidence. I stood before the eleven players in all my virginal glory, and announced: ‘I've never conducted before, so if I give a wrong cue, do try to come in right anyway.'” Fortunately for Rorem, his eleven musicians were accomplished faculty at Buffalo University, and, despite his inexperience, Rorem certainly knew how his new piece should sound. Rorem's Suite incorporated a few bits recycled from music he had written for a successful Broadway hit—Tennessee Williams' “Suddenly Last Summer”—plus a bit from an unsuccessful play entitled “Motel” that never made it past a Boston tryout. Rorem's own tryout as a conductor convinced him to stick to composing, although he proved to be a fine piano accompanist for singers performing his own songs. As for “Eleven Studies for Eleven Players,” it's gone on to become one of Rorem's most-often performed chamber works. Folks, it's amazing to realize that the What The Riff podcast has been around for a year! To celebrate, we're focusing this Memorial Day week on rock-and-roll songs of summer. Our memories of summers past have always been tied to the music of the time, and we suspect that is the same for you as well. Whether cruising with the top down, hanging out with friends, or playing your boom box on the beach or at the pool, the right song will “take you back” and the memories come flooding through. We hope you enjoy this special rabbit hole edition as we look at summer songs that rock! “Summertime, Summertime” by the Jamies We go back a little earlier than typical with this song from 1958. It has a "sacred harp" sound, and its introductory riff has been covered multiple times. “Dancing in the Street” by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas by David Bowie & Mick Jagger by Van Halen Here is a fine example of a song that has been covered multiple times in a number of styles. The consensus of the What The Riff?!? guys is that the Van Halen version is the best. What do you think? Surfin' U.S.A. by the Beach Boys Perhaps the group most identified with summer in the 60's. You can't do a summer rock episode without having The Beach Boys make an appearance. “Wipe Out” by The Surfaris The most famous instrumental surfing song. What a distinctive percussion and guitar riff! “In the Summertime” by Mungo Jerry We make our way into 1970 with this easy-going groovey track. “Summer in the City” by The Lovin' Spoonful What an awesome line: "Hotter than a matchhead." This song drifts back to a psychedelic 1966, and reminds us of the pre-air conditioning days of summer in the South. “School's Out” by Alice Cooper Everyone remembers this anthem playing at the end of school, marking the start of summer. “Rockaway Beach” by The Ramones Here is a punk genre summer song from the 70's. This one hearkens to the surfing songs of the 60's. “Summertime Blues” by Eddie Cochran by The Who by Rush Here's another example of an original with multiple covers, from 1958 to 1976 to 2004. Were you even aware RUSH did this cover? “Margaritaville ” by Jimmy Buffett This 1977 classic is a mandatory summer song, and brings up the drinks of summer. “Summer Nights” by John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John While this tune is not exactly a rock song, it was a huge summer classic from the 70's, and we did not feel right leaving it out! ... but we don’t listen to the whole thing... “Suddenly Last Summer” by The Motels Drifting into the 80's, The Motels lead off a set of summer songs with female leads. There's a wistfulness with this track we’re all digging. “Cruel Summer” by Bananarama Bananarama had a string of hits in the 80's, including this summer song in a minor key. “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina & The Waves And we switch to a 1985 hit that is more upbeat and positive. This was the biggest hit for Katrina and the Waves, almost (but not quite) their "one hit wonder.“ “Holiday Road” by Lindsey Buckingham This 1983 hit was made famous by “National Lampoon's Vacation” movies, and appeared in subsequent movies in the series. To us, it sounds a little bit like Kenny Loggins, maybe. “Mas Tequila” by Sammy Hagar We step outside our normal chronology with this track from 1999. Welcome to the eerie Garden District, filled with Venus flytraps, subversive secrets, and broken hearts. The only son of wealthy widow Violet Venable, Sebastian, has died while on vacation with his rebellious cousin Catharine. What the girl saw that day last summer was so horrible that she is presumed mad and locked away in an asylum to keep her mouth shut.As time goes on, Catharine’s ravings about Sebastian’s sexuality and fate become so transgressive that his dear mother Violet decides that locking her away isn’t enough. She calls in an aspirational young Doctor to have the girl lobotomised and cut out her hideous story for good.A thrilling examination of legacy, sanity, and sexuality, this Southern gothic melodrama will cut straight through the heart with its visceral imagery and erotically charged symbolismFor more information visit https://redstitch.net/gallery/suddenly-last-summer/ Theatre First RSS feed: https://feeds.megaphone.fm/ivetheatrereviews Subscribe, rate and review Theatre First at all good podcatcher apps, including Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes), Stitcher, Pocket Casts, audioBoom, CastBox.FM, Podbean etc.If you're enjoying Theatre First podcast, please share and tell your friends. Today off The River Turntable we have "Suddenly Last Summer" by The Motels
The Motels had several big hits in the early Eighties, including “Only the Lonely” and “Suddenly Last Summer.” At a time when new albums are kind of an afterthought, The Motels have just issued one of the strongest albums of their entire career called The Last Few Beautiful Days.Vocalist Martha Davis is reunited with Marty Jourard who provided signature saxophone and keyboards on many of their albums. This new record somehow manages to be both modern and a reflection of everything that the band has done before. We chat with Davis about what led to this new project, and how using vintage keyboards on the new record helped give it a timeless quality . Plus, she gives us the stories behind their biggest hits.
On this bonus episode, Brian runs down a stack of titles from Indicator including: THE CHASE, OTLEY, THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE, SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER and THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-IN-THE-MOON MARIGOLDS.
I catch up with Martha Davis of The Motels, who tells me what the band was called before they changed their name. The band’s biggest hits include “Only The Lonely” and “Suddenly Last Summer”, Martha tells me the story behind those hits. We talk about the band’s upcoming release, “The Last Few Beautiful Days”

The band The Motels was perfectly suited for the New Wave music scene in the late 70s, as well as visually perfect for the MTV era a few years later. With hits like "Only the Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer" they secured enough of a following to put them on the road and in the studio for years to come. But the path to that success was by no means overnight or easy - especially for the voice, chief songwriter and, ostensibly, the face of the band - Martha Davis. Martha comes in to the MonkeyCage to share her remarkable journey in the music business at the same time she is celebrating the release of a live concert film "The Motels Live at the Whisky a GoGo 50th Anniversary" which will premiere tonight (9/21/2015) at the Regent Theatre in downtown Los Angeles (tickets still available as of this posting). The red carpet starts at 8pm, screening shortly thereafter, there will be a Q&A session with Martha, Emmy winning cinematographer Roy H. Wagner and director Denise Faye, the choreographer of "Burlesque" and the co-director of Cher's current tour. (And while you're downtown, check out Beelman's Pub, as they have been a very kind sponsor for this event.) The DVD and Blu ray of "The Motels Live at the Whisky a GoGo 50th Anniversary" will be released nationwide on Oct 23. Thanks, also, to Nicholas Johns, a current member of The Motels lineup, for giving us his perspective as well!
