Laly Lichtenfeld and Neovitus Sianga's work at African People and Wildlife (AP&W) centers on the linkages between people, wildlife and the diverse ecosystems they call home. For decades surrounding their base of operations in Tanzania, there have been intense and seemingly intractable conflicts between wildlife and people. Since 2005 AP&W has been making impressive progress on mitigating these conflicts with simple, ingenious solutions that can be implemented by livestock managers and whole communities on their own. Importantly, they support the use of these solutions through a multitude of ongoing programs that include youth environmental education, women-owned business ventures, continuous monitoring and evaluation, and infrastructure such as their now famous 'living wall enclosures' to protect livestock from predators. As a result, their methodology and values-based approach is being replicated across Africa where others seek similarly effective solutions to help nature and  humans coexist.------Learn More about Laly Lichtenfeld and African People and WildlifeAfrican People and WildlifeLaly Lichtenfeld Interviews and Videos:*Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants*AP&W: Lion Tales*National Geographic Education: Explorer ClassroomThis episode was produced by Chrissie Bodznick with music by Trace Ketterling.Learn more about The Answers Are Out There Podcast at www.theanswersareouttherepodcast.net or on instagram. On this week's episode, I sat down with Raz Chen, a former IDF soldier (we both served in the same brigade) and current Krav Maga practitioner in NYC. Krava Maga aka contact combat is a combat system designed by Imi Lichtenfeld. Lichtenfeld, a world-renowned boxer, wrestler, and gymnast created this combat system to protect Jews from antisemitic attacks in Czechoslovakia and other European countries during the rise of Nazi Germany. Imi fled to Israel in the 30's and began to teach Krav Maga to Israeli's which eventually became the Israeli Army's official combat system. Unlike traditional martial arts which have rules, Krav Maga has none. The goal is to disarm, maim and if necessary, kill your opponent as quickly and efficiently as possible. D., Xiong, Y., Westerberg, J. A., Maier, A., Desimone, R., Miller, E. K., Bastos, A. M. Abstract: The mammalian cerebral cortex is anatomically organized into a six-layer motif. It is currently unknown whether a corresponding laminar motif of neuronal activity exists across the cortex. Here, we report the discovery of such a motif in the power of local field potentials (LFP). We implanted multicontact laminar probes in five macaque monkeys and recorded activity across layers in 12 cortical areas at various hierarchical processing stages in all cortical lobes. The anatomical laminar locations of recordings were histologically identified via electrolytic lesions. In all areas, we found a common spectrolaminar pattern characterized by an increasing deep-to-superficial layer gradient of gamma frequency LFP power peaking in layers 2/3, and an increasing superficial-to-deep gradient of alpha-beta power peaking in layers 5/6. Our results show a functional dissociation between superficial and deep layers that is preserved across the cortex, suggesting a ubiquitous layer and frequency-based mechanism for cortical computation.

Accounting Platforms for Business Data that have Climate ImpactSustainaBase is a software program that helps manage the carbon footprint of a company, akin to an accounting platform. SuistainaBase tracks carbon emissions, as well as water and waste metrics, taking data and science calculations to organizations to create meaningful actions.“Sustainability is important and it's something that we should be tracking like the way we track dollars. We should be checking to see if we're really making the reductions that we want to be making and the impacts that we want to be reducing.” -Gaida“Project Gigaton is a Walmart program, it's a big audacious program with a very meaningful goal. They're working to avoid a billion metric tons of greenhouse gasses from their supply chain by the year 2030.” -Holly Smaller companies may see some challenges in the sustainability approach but starting somewhere and starting small helps add to the change of creating meaningful actions. Starting these efforts from the beginning can be easier than starting them mid way with a larger company. Carbon accounting can start anywhere but it has to start somewhere. One person isn't going to make a change but a community, the government, and a company working together will. Ways decision makers can start small is by building opportunities for change within their organization, building community efforts, and sourcing companies that are working towards sustainability. Associated Links:Learn more about Gaida Zirkelbach, Holly Lichtenfeld, and SustainaBase. Well Made podcast by Stephan AngoSucharita Kodali joins the Future Commerce pod Holly's 3 C's to Supply Chain Accountability Want to hear what else is next in commerce? In the final part of a two-part podcast episode, film historian and author Eric Lichtenfeld ("Action Speaks Louder") joins Sarah and Raf for the second half of their conversation about the 1988 action film and Christmas classic "Die Hard."This time, the group dives even deeper into the important tropes and meaning found in the beloved film: what the music is really saying; how John McClane is pride and Hans Gruber is vanity; and the sheer delight of stealing a candy bar from the Nakatomi Corporation. Raf dares to ask if there's anything the group doesn't like about the movie (and yes, there are a few things). Sarah, meanwhile, gets to swoon while stating "I'm just basking forever now in this idea that Alan Rickman and I said the same thing, sort of, kind of."It's also time to say "Happy trails" to Season 2 of What the Kids Were Watching, as it draws to a close with this episode. The podcast hosts send a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who's listened in, both during this season and the last one. It's been a lot of fun, and they truly appreciate all the love and support.

For years, people have argued about whether or not the 1988 action masterpiece "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie. Sarah and Raf are not here to argue about that. They're here to close out Season 2 with an incredible guest star who provides in-depth insight into the film's production and ongoing influence -- someone who literally wrote the book on "Die Hard." (Well, he wrote the Library of Congress essay that accompanied the movie's induction into the National Film Registry.)Film historian and author Eric Lichtenfeld ("Action Speaks Louder") joins the podcast hosts to discuss the enduring cultural legacy of "that thing in the building," from what set the film apart from other action movies to the connections it helped forge between family members. To say Eric is a "Die Hard" expert is a bit of an understatement -- in addition to writing the afore-mentioned essay for the National Film Registry, he also conducted the interviews for the text commentary track (yes, the one on your DVD!).A fantastic raconteur, Eric shares delightful stories with Sarah and Raf about the film's subtext, its creators, and, yes, why we have turned it into a Christmas classic. Most of all, the hosts talk about why we're still talking about "Die Hard" 33 years later. It's a phenomenal movie with a ton of thought and care put into it; but as Eric states, it's also "a movie where things matter, [where] what happens to people matters." And that's just one of the many reasons why it still matters.

The spy had gotten a step closer to the Butcher. Comparing Israel's mission to assassinate Herbert Cukurs to the US mission to assassinate Osama Bin Laden, the latter was revenge. But when Israel and Mossad decided to kill The Butcher of Latvia, it was to prevent more killing of Jews. Things were starting to heat up with the Statute of Limitations, which was the whole reason for the mission: to stop Germany from giving Nazi killers a free pass for their atrocities. Importantly, a famous Nazi hunter joined the cause: Simon Wiesenthal. Wiesenthal was a master publicist and self-promoter and was obsessed with finding the men and women responsible for the Holocaust and bringing Nazis to justice. “Good Assassins: Hunting the Butcher" came out of Stephan Talty's work on a related book, The Good Assassin. Explore other parts of this story in the book: Buy The Good Assassin There was also the question of the assassination method. Mossad had many ways to take someone out, what they called “targeted killings.” Yosef Yariv's job was to recruit the rest of the team that would fly to South America to join Mio and carry out the sentence on the Butcher. The team would need to train in how to bring down a strong, desperate man who has just realized he's fighting for his life.  Yariv found a guy. His name was Imi Lichtenfeld. Lichtenfeld had created a street-fighting technique called Krav Maga (“close combat” in Hebrew), which allowed practitioners to inflict the most damage in the shortest possible time. In 1948, the Israel Defense Forces had adopted Krav Maga for training its recruits and named Imi Lichtenfeld Chief Instructor for Physical Fitness. In 1964, Lichtenfeld began to lead secret training sessions with the kill team.  This episode contains interviews with H. Bewirb Dich jetzt für unser kostenfreies 30-minütiges BGM-Strategiegespräch: https://www.bgmpodcast.de/strategiegespraech/ Innovative BGM-Maßnahmen: Krav Maga: Gute Vorsätze fürs neue Jahr, Klappe die Zweite. Chris Vermeulen, chief market strategist at The Technical traders, says that enthusiasm over the market's run back to record highs has overheated, making it likely that there is a pullback of 5 to 10 percent, after which he expects the rally to resume and for stocks to grind back to record highs and beyond. Meanwhile, Marc Lichtenfeld, chief income strategist at The Oxford Club, says that dividend investors who want to give companies a break when they freeze, suspend or reduce payouts during these turbulent times might want to stick to their standards and not give too much of a pass just because the economy and market are experiencing tough times. Some leeway is warranted, Lichtenfeld notes, but dividend cuts remain a bad sign for income-oriented investors. Also on the show, securities attorney Thomas DeCapo of Skadden Arps discusses whether recent SEC rules changes will reduce activism in closed-end funds, and long-short manager Brad Lamensdorf of the Lamensdorf Market Timing report talks stocks in the Market Call.
