202: What You Need to Know About Gear w/ Chris Monlux

Making smart gear purchases can help grow your video business. It can also be an expensive distraction. With such a large variety of choices and features, it’s easy to get lost down a rabbit hole of gear. To help shed light on this, I’ve brought on a true expert to this episode. If you are new to live streaming, make sure to test it out thoroughly before you go live. Get the right gear, but don’t go overboard. Once you are comfortable with what you have, try it out and get familiar with all the settings. When it’s time to do the real thing, you’ll know what to expect and come off as a pro. Key Takeaways Be proactive with your customer service. Being quick to respond and communicate reduces anxieties and makes customers feel heard and valued. This is what ultimately leads to repeat business and referrals. About Chris Monlux Chris is the multimedia editor for Videomaker and their magazine. He conducts and writes all of their reviews and produces all of their learning videos content. This guy knows his gear! The Essential Gear for the Modern Videomaker Get ready to nerd out on a lot of gear in this episode. Chris describes why many different cameras are in his collection and why he enjoys them for their different features. However, just because a camera has all the bells and whistles doesn’t mean it's a good investment. Before you get your hands on an expensive piece of equipment, you should consider whether or not your clients would actually benefit from it. For obvious reasons, live-streaming has become more popular than ever this year. There’s a lot of tech to consider if you do live streaming and having the right stuff can really make a difference. Overall, Chris recommends keeping it simple. Just a couple of cameras and the right software should get the job done. Where you succeed or fail will hinge a lot more on your content and marketing than it will on the tech that you use. The Best Approach to Customer Service Of course, gear is only one part of being a successful filmmaker. Customer service is a huge part of the rest of it. Chris describes how being quick to respond to your customer’s needs is central to this. Overall, your ability to anticipate their needs, communicate promptly and clearly and exceed expectations will keep them coming back for more. What is the most essential piece of gear in your collection? Have you ever regretted buying a piece of equipment?  Tell me in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode: Why Chris doesn’t have a favorite camera [4:28] Finding creative fulfillment in your work [8:40] How gear can both help grow or sidetrack your business [15:20] The best gear and strategies for live streaming [29:10] Anticipating the unpredictabilities when shooting live events [42:00] How good customer service can save the day when problems arise [43:45]   Quotes “I’m getting my creative juices out at work. I’m getting paid to have fulfillment creatively and that was always so valuable to me.” [9:22] “I like to get inspired by my equipment, but to covet those new features when there isn’t a need is unfortunate” [17:27] “We want those things that look really neat, but if someone didn’t tell you what it was shot in and it did the job, how much are you really going to care?” [26:46] “If you underpromise and overperform, your client is going to be so excited about what they get because it’s more than they expected. All it is is setting expectations.” [51:19]   Links: Download the 30-day guide to jumpstart your video business! What You Need to Consider as You Grow Your Video Business w/ Ariel Martinez

There’s a lot to consider as your business grows. When I started my studio, I was my only employee. It wasn’t too long before I realized I needed to hire some people on to keep things running. I was hesitant. It costs a lot to take on employees. But what I soon realized was that a larger team led to more and better work in the long run. Key Takeaways There’s a cost in hiring employees. However, having a team allows you to focus on the work you need to. When done thoughtfully and intentionally, growing your team leads to more clients, higher quality work, and more overall satisfaction in the end. It’s important that clients understand how you build your budget. Itemizing the gear you use will help convey the value of the work they receive. It may be useful to ask them their budget from the start and let them know what you can realistically offer within that. Attitude is everything when working with clients. You’re there to help your clients achieve their goals. Staying positive and supportive while offering your expertise will lead to high levels of satisfaction and repeat business. About Ariel Martinez Ariel Martinez is a Miami-Based documentary filmmaker specializing in storytelling, cinematography, commercial video production, and conference videography. With over 10 years as a freelancer, he has specialized in operating as a one-man-band without compromise. Considerations About Growing Your Team As someone who handles all aspects of production, Ariel strives to offer his clients quality work at a lower cost. With the right vision and gear, he is able to get clients, shoot video, edit, and deliver outstanding films. But it’s a lot of work, not all of it what he’d prefer to do. We discuss what growing a team looks like as a business expands and the benefits and drawbacks of doing so. Presenting Your Gear and Attitude to Clients Ariel owns a lot of his own gear. Of course, there are quite a bit of upfront costs in acquiring it. We talk about building those costs into your pricing models. Ariel has found that by itemizing the gear used and presenting that to clients in a budget, they’ll better understand the value of what they pay for. Perhaps the most important asset to growth and longevity is a positive attitude. Ariel and I have seen this in action. Remember, you are there to serve your clients and their vision. While you should still offer your expert opinion, it’s crucial that you do so in a positive manner. People will remember your attitude as much as they remember the work itself. Have you grown a team? Let me know how it has paid off in the comments on the episode page! How do you bring a positive attitude to the set every day? Tell me in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode: How Ariel got into freelance video production [6:00] The challenges and advantages that come with working by yourself versus building a team [13:52] How to charge for jobs while serving clients at a high level [25:30] What happens when you own your own gear [35:10] The importance of positivity to grow your business [42:38]   Quotes “It’s really a dream come true for me that I can do what I love, enjoy it so much, and have flexibility.” [13:16] “I don’t think there’s a wrong or right way to do things. There’s what you enjoy. There’s what makes more money. There’s what makes less money. There’s different tactics that you can take on every avenue that you consider.” [24:20] “You might be the professional that they’re looking for. But at the same time, you have to serve them for what they’re looking for. They might want to go in a certain direction. Whether you agree with it or not, you’re there to serve them and their vision, not your own.” [43:46] “Just keep pushing. Love the passion. Love the work. Love the process. Just never stop learning.” [49:53]   Links: Download the 30-day guide to jumpstart your video business Find Ariel Martinez online Follow Ariel on Instagram | Vimeo | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube iFilmmaker Podcast   Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Do you have something to share on this podcast? Do you feel like you’re running in place on a life-sized hamster wheel or are you living a life of delight? As a business owner and entrepreneur, it might feel like you have a never-ending to-do list to check off. But that’s not why you do what you do. Today, I’m thrilled to have a guest who will help us reframe why we got into this line of work, to begin with. About Amira Alvarez Amira Alvarez has created an amazing brand that makes a huge impact on people’s lives. She is the founder and CEO of The Unstoppable Woman, a global coaching company helping entrepreneurs, empire builders, and rising stars achieve their dreams and goals in record time. Your Business as a Source of Satisfaction Amira draws a direct connection between building and growing a business with personal satisfaction. While some days will naturally be more difficult than others, the goal of running your own business should be to have a good time. It should empower you to live the life you want. It’s easy to fall into the trap of the daily grind. To combat this, Amira urges fellow entrepreneurs to stay focused on the big picture. Recognizing Your Vision For Your Life and Career The fact of the matter is that there are infinite ways to run a business. Too often, entrepreneurs fall into the old paradigms that they know from former jobs. Yet, if you can identify your vision and how you want to show up for your job, you can actively work to create that reality. Amira urges everyone to recognize that they can operate according to their own rules. When this happens, you’ll be able to actually enjoy what you do for a living. Many find that they’re working themselves into the ground. Making more money can help you escape this. The trick is doing it without creating more work that you don’t want to do. This could mean raising your prices, selling more, or adding a new income channel. Before you can do this, you need to believe in yourself and the value of what you do. How is your business leading you towards a life of delight? How can you shift what you do to create a more fulfilling work experience? Tell me in the comments on the episode page!   In this episode  How growing your business can lead to joy and fulfillment [4:10] What happens when your goals become your priorities [11:39] Recognizing the signs that it’s time to shift gears on how you operate [14:53] The realization that you don’t need to run your business according to anyone else’s expectations [23:00] How to escape the trap of over-exhausting yourself [28:30] Building your sense of self-worth as insulation against those who would treat you poorly [36:20]   Quotes “Why grow your own business if it’s not for that sense of personal freedom, excitement, enthusiasm?” [4:24] “Doing the hard things - really stepping up and doing those challenging things that move the needle forward - that makes you feel great!” [13:56] “Who decided that the weekend is the weekend? Who decided that working is from nine to five? If I am excited and thrilled and living a delighted life, who cares? Why do I have to play by the rules?” [26:43] “If you don’t value yourself, if you don’t have a sense of personal self-worth, you will attract people who don’t treat you well.” [36:20]  “Go after your dreams. Do you believe that you can build your dream team, one that cares as much about your business as you do?And that maybe just maybe you can hire people who do the things that you think you do best, better than you? It's been a goal of mine for several years to build my dream team. You know the type of high-performing, high trust team that will help me on my aim to build a million dollar revenue business by the end of 2023.Yet the biggest mindset shift for me to do this, has been to get out of the way, and relinquish control, surrender to trusting people I bring into my business and their skills.I'm pretty sure I'm not the only entrepreneur who struggles with letting go, and handing your baby over! The other thing you need to know, before you start hiring team members, is your best return on investment and your superpowers. Ask yourself:What do I do best, that only I can do?What can I give up and delegate? What needs to change in order to scale?Do I need these people in-house or can I outsource I've been hiring people since 2012 and I can tell you, it's been a journey. I've had over 40 contractors and freelancers in that time, perhaps more. Sometimes I've hired the best people, and sometimes I've made big mistakes - hiring too fast, and failing to fire fast too. But I'm always learning the lesson, improving my processes, on-boarding, systems and communications. And this year, I'm really being more intentional with how I go about building my dream team. So I'm sharing it ALL on this podcast episode, and letting you in on my thoughts for how you can go about building your dream team, without the drama and headaches, and instead, from a place of certainty and flow.In This Episode You’ll Learn:Why you need to start with focusing on the goals of the businessWhich tasks you can delegate first to find your feet in handing overThe power of using a Dream Team chart to fill your gapsWho should ideally hire first, and where to find your teamPodcast Resources and Links:Download my free Four Lists to Freedom to work out what you can delegate firstCheck out Upwork for access to 1 Million plus talented freelancersWriting a book? Our special guest this week is Dave Meyers, CEO of Zim Zam Global.  The name is unusual but their vision is so important. This ministry focuses on reaching children and youth with Christ around the world. In fact, their vision is to have a church for every child. They do this by partnering with churches around the world and empowering them to grow and plant new churches, so then they too can reach and disciple more people. Why do they do this? Because children are by far the world’s most vulnerable people group and many never get the chance to hear about Jesus. Do you have more than one target audience for your business? The guest that I had on this week’s strategy session has three… yes, you heard that right! She wanted to gain some clarity around how to reach the three audiences that she has for her business and that’s exactly what we talked about in this episode. I spoke with Emmy, the founder of Shop Local, an online business community that helps people to do exactly what it says: buy and sell their products in the local community. We talked about an upcoming show she’s doing and how she can attract more vendors to that show. She shares how she plans to run the tradeshow online and her vision around what that will look like.  We talk a lot about how her online marketplace functions (think Etsy but for your local community!) She shares pain points that she helps solve for her vendors and I give some advice on how she can leverage her vendors to reach more people. I also give her some tips around using marketing to help smooth out people’s fears and how to use Facebook groups for marketing efforts.    We talk about: Why Emmy started her business to help small businesses What their give-back program is  How she targets her 3 separate audiences What they’re pushing toward in the midst of COVID How her online marketplace functions  What they’re doing to attract vendors for their upcoming show Trends she’s noticed about her vendors Pain-points that her business is solving for vendors  How she can leverage her audience for her messaging How they use influencer marketing and live videos What the fair will look like virtually Advice for leveraging vendors’ audiences Why giving people a clear path will help them smooth out their fears Tips for getting into Facebook groups for marketing purposes   About Emmy: I started a website company when I was 19 and over the years saw small businesses struggle with the same marketing issues. I realized that there needed to be some sort of shared Community marketing platform that supported local businesses in the community. Shop Local was born and we've grown in communities all over the US that use our mobile app. Now we've launched our Online Marketplace to help businesses survive the big online mogules like Amazon and Etsy. If you struggle with the idea of selling, you’re going to love the message that guest Erika Tebbens has to share—selling can be simple, authentic, and leave you feeling good with money in your pocket. And, you can be a selling rockstar! Erika Tebbens is a Lord of the Rings lovin’, coffee drinking, teenager mama and all-around spunky entrepreneur. She’s not about the labels, but if she was you could call her a business coach, consultant, strategist or selling superstar. She’s paired her passion for helping women succeed at growing their businesses with the knowledge she’s gained from working corporate retail, small business retail and direct sales to create an incredible consulting business of her own - and she drops ALL kinds of knowledge in this episode. In this episode, you will learn: How Erika fell in love with selling and teaching others to succeed in sales and creating a great customer experience. Taking on that identity is what will make the goals real to you. This has been so helpful to me because traditional goal setting has never worked that well. I’d make a goal, like guesting on 2 podcasts a month or doing 1 speaking engagement a month. But, I never felt truly motivated to keep pursuing them. In this special episode we discuss some of the books that have inspired us over the years. Our choices may seem surprising but we hope they are all enlightening. They include a collection of letters from one poet to another, a book on marketing (with a twist), two very different artist-written books, and two diverse guides to living an easier and more joyful life. We could not fit all our recommended books into one podcast, so we've created a special download for you with a total of 14 amazing reads. (see below for links). Even if you think some of these books are not for you, it might be worth trusting us and trying them anyway - each one contains amazing wisdom to enrich our lives and our art-making. We also answer a listener question about how to judge our work. Is there any such thing as a perfect painting? And how do we know if what we are making is good? In fact, who decides what is good? When Elle Rowley of Solly Baby created her first product it was out of necessity. She had one little one and another on the way. While she enjoyed wearing her oldest in a baby carrier, she was looking to find a different product to use because of the tension headaches she got using her store-bought carrier. She ended up sewing her own wrap, fell in love with the experience, and never looked back. (**sidenote...I have worn several of my babies in her wraps and they are WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!) Elle has grown Solly Baby, formerly lulu WRAP, from a small Etsy shop to a multi-million-dollar business. You read that right... multi-million! But, she didn't set out to grow a huge company. Her intention was to make money doing something she loved and cared about, that added value to the world, all while being able to stay at home. That’s where Julie’s company Book Launchers comes in. Book Launchers has an incredible, hands-on workshop coming up November 1-3, 2018, in the Los Angeles area. They have people flying in to attend, so you don’t have to be local. Before you even walk into the room, Book Launchers will help you position your book so it's going to stand out in the marketplace. On site, you'll create your outline (or refine it), plan your book marketing in detail, and brainstorm key elements like chapter titles and book titles. Getting those things right will matter a lot for your book marketing … and tying it into your signature talk. You'll work directly with an Emmy nominated writer, a book marketing specialist who took her last client to the WSJ Bestsellers list, and a brilliant social media strategist who wrote the very first book on Twitter. Plus, before you leave, you'll have created a clear step by step plan (with dates!) to take you from writing to book launch. And, you'll spend eight uninterrupted hours writing! You’ll write more in a weekend than many people write in months! At their last writers retreat many of the attendees wrote more than 10,000 words (that’s almost one third of a book), improved their book idea, and created a plan with dates to launch and market their book!   I invite you to check out the details at https://booklaunchers.com/carol You can use the code “Carol” to receive $100 off the single pay option. ***************    Links: Download the FREE PDF for this episode at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/87. Episode 116: Is Inbound Still a Good Investment?

Inbound2Grow

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 6, 2018 20:41

Inspired by Mark Schaefer’s assertion that inbound costs increase over time, in this episode we unpack that idea and discuss the need for adaptation and adoption of inbound as a mindset rather than a methodology. Show Notes [1:50] Question: Is Inbound Still a Good Investment?  The idea behind Schaefer’s post is that in the beginning, as companies invest in content creation and other inbound tactics, the investment is relatively low and easy to reach leads will find you because your niche is unsaturated. Over time however, as more content is created and the niche becomes saturated companies have to invest more in content creation to keep up. Companies spend more to increase the volume of content, the number of emails, advertising, etc. so inbound becomes more and more expensive. On the one hand, yes to do inbound requires an investment. Inbound isn’t free, and it isn’t magic. But the reality is that traditional outbound marketing is less effective than it has ever been. Your prospects will not tolerate canned cold calls, one-size-fits-all sales tactics, or pushy advertising. Prospects want an individual, personalized experiences. They want to do their research before talking to a salesperson. They want the companies they work with to help them solve their problems, not just peddle a product. They want, in short, inbound. Of course, if you begin to create content in an unsaturated niche leads will be easy to find. Of course, as time goes on, there are fewer easy leads. Yes, inbound requires continuous investment in creating amazing, high-quality, helpful content. However, inbound is still more effective than traditional tactics, and it should be less overhead. As for spending more to create greater quantities of content, that idea really misses the heart of what inbound is. If your emails, blog, whatever tactic isn’t working well then, the answer isn’t to produce more mediocre content and hope that if two emails a week weren’t working four will. You should know your persona, their struggles, their goals, their preferences and that knowledge should inform the types of content you are creating. You should be creating content for your niche that they will love. You should be spending your money better! If your persona isn’t into long format blog posts, ditch them. If your persona wants a short format podcast (something we know a little something about), then you should be spending your money and time creating short format podcast episodes not 1000+ word blog posts. Inbound isn’t a bucket of tactics (emails, blogs, etc.) that you are bound to follow slavishly, throwing money hand over fist at the tactics and hoping they work. Inbound is a mindset that should permeate your entire organization. Inbound is about all levels of your company helping your prospects solve their problems. Helping requires an investment, sure, but being helpful is more effective and, ultimately, less costly than traditional marketing methods. If the inbound tactics you are using aren’t working and are eating up more and more of your budget, then it’s time to take a step back and figure out how your prospects want to be helped, where they want to be helped, and when they want to be helped and then go give it to them! [18:54] Todd's Truth Inbound is a mindset, not just tactics or a methodology. I hardly ever share this story because, well frankly, it’s not my proudest moment. But here goes… I quit my first full-time “adult” job after only 5 weeks. I’m not a total jerk, so I did give 2 weeks notice, but that only put me there for a whopping 7 weeks total. (That was not a fun conversation with my boss, let me tell you.) Almost immediately after starting that job, I realized I’d made a big mistake. In my impatience to get a “real” job after graduating, I said yes to the first offer I got. And on Day 1 — walking around that tiny government office, surrounded exclusively by men three times my age, sitting in subcommittee meetings about topics I can’t even care enough to try to remember now — I already had an unsettled feeling in my gut that was warning me, “Uh oh, this isn’t right. You don't belong here.” A few weeks in, I’d just sat through my third hour-long meeting where we debated — inconclusively, once again — whether or not to create a company LinkedIn page (seriously?? This is LinkedIn, you guys, not a strategy for world peace), when I checked my email to see that I had another job offer. The company offering me this new job was about as opposite as you could possibly get from the one I was already at. Where my current office was small, old, stuffy, and maddeningly slow-paced, this new company was large, young, casual, and fast-paced. A total 180-degree contrast. I figured that if I hated this place, then I’d probably love something that was the complete opposite. So I jumped at it. Yeahhh, it doesn’t work like that… In this week’s blog, I’m sharing how to use what you DON'T want to figure out what you DO want. WANT HELP WITH THIS? We made you a FREE downloadable worksheet that will walk you through 5 steps to use what you don't want to get clear on what you do want — particularly if what you do want is a dream job (though honestly, this process applies to anything and everything). I can remember talks I’ve given, especially ones on stages in front of large audiences, where it felt like an out of body experience. I gave my talk, it went really well, but it was a complete blur, like tunnel vision. It all happened so fast and I felt like I was observing myself rather than being truly present and a part of it. Now, when I do a presentation, I’m in my comfort zone. I feel confident about my material and my stage presence. That’s what I want for you too, which is what I’m sharing with you in this episode: specific techniques and strategies you can use when preparing for and delivering your talk, including what to do the day-of and on stage. I also share a few personal stories of how I conquered my nerves and what happened to me in a dress rehearsal and why I’m really glad there weren't cell phone cameras back then. Remember: Your audience doesn’t want you to be perfect; they want you to be present. What opportunities are you missing out on because you don’t have a signature talk? In this episode, I share why having a signature talk is critical for your business and your personal brand, including examples of what makes a great signature talk (and how it’s different from a training). With a signature talk, you become the go-to expert and thought leader for your topic and industry. You establish your personal brand and business reputation. You’re ready to accept speaking opportunities when they come your way, because you’re always prepared with a presentation that you can tweak and repurpose based on the particular audience, event, venue, and length of time. When you sincerely and authentically empower others, they’ll want to share and refer you to others, and they will come to you to buy your product or service when they need help. Having a signature talk, a presentation that you are comfortable with, that provides value to those in the audience, that you get better at each time you give it, will give you the confidence to get out there and share your message.   Highlights: What a signature talk is and what it isn't Why you need a signature talk for your business and your personal brand How to figure out what your signature talk topic is The difference between a training and a signature talk Taking your personal story and universalizing it Getting booked and paid to speak   Links: Download the free PDF guide to start creating your signature talk: https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/25 Join the free Speaking Your Brand community at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/join/. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m really excited about today’s episode. We’re really going to start to speak to some of that “Fit” side of the Fed and Fit. I’m really thrilled and honored to have Dave Hunt, president and CEO of Crossrope on the call today. So just to give you guys a little bit of background information on Dave; he invented the Crossrope system, which we’ll talk more about in a little bit, when he was sidelined with an injury back in 2011. From his high school days in upstate New York, to the Naval Academy, and then on to a career as a navy pilot, he’s always had a passion for jumping. When he’s not at Crossrope headquarters working on innovative new ways to bring an enjoyable jump rope experience to the masses, which is probably no easy task, you’ll find him at the gym spending time with his wife and two kids. He’s an awesome guy; I’m excited to talk to him today and introduce you guys. Welcome to the show, Dave! Dave Hunt: Thanks so much for having me, I appreciate it. Cassy Joy: Oh my goodness, absolutely. Tell us a little bit about your background; maybe tell us about your personal fitness journey, I’m really fascinated by that. And what interested you in a career dedicated to optimizing the jump rope experience? Dave Hunt: Sure, absolutely. First of all, thanks for the kind intro. I’ve always loved to jump. I think sometimes there are just innate characteristics and passions that people have, and I don’t know where it came from, but ever since I was a little kid, I just remember trying to jump as high as I can. I always gravitated towards jumping sports; I think there’s just some sort of; I don’t know, even if it’s only for a second, some sort of freedom about leaving gravity and trying to jump up in the air. Even though we’re not really made to fly, it’s fun to pretend like we can. So I’ve just always had a passion for jumping, and I pursued that through the sports that I did all the way up through being a high jumper, and a long jumper in college, and I was kind of one of those guys that after I graduated, I couldn’t hand up the spikes. I still had to pretend like I was an athlete and like I was competing, and I found that the jump rope was just a really challenging and engaging way to continue to push my limits. I kind of found it to be that limitless challenge where I could find new skills and tricks and tempos that would really push and challenge me. Along the way, when I was trying new jump ropes and trying new workouts, I discovered heavy ropes, but I kept on breaking them. So it kind of put me in a scenario where I thought the classic, “There’s got to be a better way.” So I think that planted a seed for me. And then you mentioned that I got an injury back in 2011, so that was my opportunity to kind of seize the day, and give it a shot and see what I could create. Cassy Joy: That’s awesome. Did you happen to watch the Crossfit games this...

You may want to consider studying and taking this exam with Construction Documents & Services and Site Planning & Design- you will find that they are all about the same issues, just from different vantage points.
