Have you been wondering how to make the big pivot to virtual events? Are you a complete newbie when it comes to event technology and the virtual event world? As we speak with guest speakers and discuss our own experiences with the virtual and hybrid event industry, we will be going through the challenges you may face along the way and how to overcome these. With the current situation, the rise and requirement for virtual and hybrid events are definitely on the rise - have you made the move yet? Listen to our live podcast every week on our Facebook page, or you can listen to the podcast version to find out how you can make your online events simple. In this episode, we're joined with Carrie Abernathy. Carrie CMP, CEM, CSEP is a 15-year events industry veteran and a blogger, speaker, coach and industry leader. Carrie Co-Founded the Association for Women in Events in 2015 and runs the blog: A Women With Drive--a nod to her love of golf and leadership. Carrie discusses how she started up in the industry and her initial thoughts of working in the events industry. She discusses how she manages her time of blogging, vlogging and organising virtual events alongside her usual ‘day job.' Its interesting to hear where her blog started and why she thinks an industry blog is important, but also we discuss how video marketing is on the rise and the importance of video. Carrie is so passionate about trying new things, which is why she started her blog and was open to attend virtual events. Having a progress over perfection mindset is important to Carrie and she discusses why. How Carrie started in the industry (00:47) How Carrie got into the events industry (02:00) What is Association of Women in events (03:45) Why the association became free after being membership based (06:08) How to manage time when working on multiple tasks (08:48) Industry blogs and podcasts and why they're important (10:22) How Carrie coped with the pandemic and how it changed her industry blog writing style (12:43) Realities of attending virtual events (14:00) What its like to organise a virtual event opposed to live (16:25) Lessons Carrie has learnt from organising virtual events (17:55) How to start up with video marketing and creation of videos (19:50) EVENTMIND is a market leader in the virtual meetings and events sector. EVENTMIND provides training, consultancy and delivery for businesses looking to engage virtually with their audience and community. You can give us an email on team@eventmindpro.com or alternatively call us on 0330 133 3485. EventMind does not endorse any particular virtual event platform or software. We review the platforms available on the market monthly (through a combination of client feedback, test events and demos). There's no platform which is an ‘all in one' or ‘all inclusive' solution when it comes to virtual event platforms. Bear in mind, most virtual event platforms were originally live event apps or software. Covid19 accelerated many platforms to pivot into creating virtual event solutions. In the long run, this seems to be a smart move as hybrid events are likely to become standard (especially if you understand how to monetize hybrid events and maximise global audience reach).

In previous lives she owned an on-location portrait business and worked in special education. Initially set up as a homestead, her family dabbled in pastured pork and poultry before diving in full gusto to market gardening in 2018. In an effort to gain the knowledge of growing vegetables and building a new ag business, she invested in intensive trainings and workshops with internationally recognized market farmers such as JM Fortier, Michael Kilpatrick, and Ray Tyler. Since then, she has made it her goal to grow the best quality, most nutrient dense vegetables possible, and in that effort The Looney Farm became the first Certified Naturally Grown farm in the OKC metro in early 2019. She hopes to learn more regenerative practices to incorporate into their model of growing in the coming seasons. Building healthy soil is one of the top priorities. Carrie and her husband Joe look forward to working together full-time soon, and find even more avenues to serve the OKC metropolitan communities through the farm. The Looney Farm currently sells at the two OKC farmers markets, a Buyers club style CSA, and through a locally sourced grocery store. "I was letting life pass me by. I had just gone through all of this insanity, and I wasn’t really a participant in my own life. How could I let that happen?" I first met Carrie Kreiswirth in 2011, when a marketing campaign for a local running store brought us together. Several years later, I saw a photo of Carrie on Facebook. She was bald. What had I missed? In the time since we met, Carrie had tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation — the one that raises the probability of developing breast and ovarian cancer — and was diagnosed with stage one triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma. Breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and breast reconstruction surgery. She went through the process of having her eggs frozen. And then, the self-proclaimed "non-runner" ran the New York City Marathon. This is a powerful, emotional, and inspirational episode. Amy Medling is an amazing health coach and healer. She is the creator and host of the PCOS Diva website and podcast. She has a new book out called Healing PCOS: A 21-Day Plan for Reclaiming Your Health and Life with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and she is here today to share her healing philosophies with us. In this episode of the Clean Eating for Women podcast, we talk about: What is PCOS Amy’s healing journey Principles of healing PCOS Some highlights of this episode on how to make veggies taste delicious: How Carrie manages her PCOS symptoms with diet and lifestyle. A lot of women are frustrated with their doctors PCOS advice. Common symptoms like fatigue, hair loss, depression, and anxiety. Amy experienced many of these symptoms, but wasn't getting a lot of help. [01:22] Doctors were giving Amy a lot of strange pharmaceutical drugs. She finally went to a reproductive endocrinologist and got a PCOS diagnosis. She was 31 when she was diagnosed. It took 15 years to get her diagnosis. [04:45] Amy wants to give women the knowledge to empower themselves, and be diva's at the doctors office. After the birth of her second son, she was exhausted all the time. Mainstream advice wasn't helping. She decided to take control of her health. [05:50] Amy spent countless hours scouring online and reading books about PCOS. She started experimenting with diet and realized as she ordered at a restaurant that she was a diva. This was an aha moment, because she realized that she had to be a diva to take the best care of herself. [07:58] The three main factors of PCOS are insulin resistance, blood sugar issues, and elevated androgens. Start with managing your blood sugar better. Amy actually used a glucometer to understand how food was making her feel. Eating to keep her blood sugar levels in check really helped. [11:42] She started eating an anti-inflammatory diet with a lot of vegetables, clean animal protein, and water. She also took supplements and eight healthy fats. This helped get her hormones in balance, and it made her feel a lot better. [13:03] Women with PCOS are at an increased risk of blood clots by being on the pill. It can also increase insulin resistance and exacerbate mood disorders. It lowers libido and creates nutrition deficiency. [15:47] Amy started reading PubMed articles and finding ways to decrease her blood sugar. She would use things like apple cider vinegar. Her lab work showed that what she was doing was actually working. She also started blogging about it in 2009. She feels it is her calling to help women heal from PCOS. She went back to school to become a health coach. [18:24] Amy's book is a lifestyle plan. It talks about symptoms of PCOS and gives an overview. Then it jumps into the three tenets of being a diva. Thinking like a diva and changing your mindset. Then eating like a diva, moving like a diva, preparing for success to start the 21-day plan. When you want to grow your business, you need to build the know, like and trust factor. Our guest today is someone who helps business owners to hone their speaking skills and create effective speeches. Carrie Sharpe is a Communication Consultant and Speaker at He says, She says. She has been married to her husband, Ryan, for over nineteen years. They have five children, including twin daughters. Carrie believes that the foundation of every great relationship is effective communication, so she loves to help people overcome communication challenges and strengthen their relationships. She coaches clients in public speaking, marriage and family communication, workplace communication, and pageant interview skills. Carrie earned her degree in Political Science and Psychology from Lake Superior State University. She homeschools her children full-time, and she runs her communication business from home. She is a Huffington Post Contributor and has been quoted in a variety of publications. Carrie has spoken across the United States and Canada about marriage, relationships, and communication skills. IN THIS EPISODE 2:08 Carrie's fun fact is that she's worn a dirndl multiple times. 4:22 Confidence and comfortability is important when you are married and sharing a conversation. While someone may need to speak to their husband or someone else, it's a lot easier to talk to a third party about the problems instead of talking with that person about what's bothering you. You have to be courageous enough to get vulnerable. You have to be courageous to get vulnerable. 8:55 If there are brain patterns of having anxiety, getting yelled at, negative experiences, from the past, you have to work through those emotions and deal with them. There are mindset issues you have to walk through. In coaching, Carrie works through these emotions differently depending on what she's coaching on. 9:09 If it's a public speaking coaching, I try to get them to switch their mind from feeling scared to feeling excited. I tell them to say "I'm so excited to share this," "I'm so excited." 9:52 If it's networking, a lot of that fear comes from them not being comfortable with what they're selling. If I get them to understand that what they're selling is helpful and useful to their audience. 10:31 Change the brain. It's all about what you're telling yourself. If you're telling yourself that people are going to hate what you're offering, telling yourself that you hate this. If you change the story then you can change the outcome. 12:13 Start with a one on one conversation at a networking event. Instead of seeing the crowd, see a person you can talk to. If you do that, you'll get better results because you're building that relationship. Conversation starts can be asking good questions of someone. They feel like they can connect with you and they'll sing your praise. That will make them feel comfortable and you can build the conversation off of the answers they give. Names are really important to remember and if I say them during the conversation, it helps me feel important and remember the person's name. 20:23 What I hear from people is I know I need to speak and get my message out, but I don't know what to talk about. So I first dig into what they're already talking about and then we work on that message. So many times we're asked a few questions frequently. You find what you're most excited and passionate about are what you can develop into a message. Then there are other fears that are developed and questions that come up. That's when having a coach is helpful. We work on an outline for the talk and find an outcome for that talk. We set things up to support that one topic and it's 3-5 bullet points and every point needs a story. Stories are what make you human and what allows you to be human and memorable. Keep it simple and narrow down on one particular thing. 26:51 We know so much, we want to be so helpful and we want to cram it all in, but you're being more helpful when you leave it out. You don't need to change their life, you just need to change their day. 28:29 I love seeing results. I have clients who come in with so many ideas and then seeing them develop a speech, and deliver it is amazing. 29:34 Someone needs to hear your story. So get out there and share it. So many of us don't give ourselves the credit for the experiences we've had. 31:31 You've been given these experiences in your life for a reason, if you don't go out and share them, then your experiences were for nothing. You want to share them and make that experience worthwhile. And it doesn't have to be speaking, it can be online on Facebook Live, it can be in so many ways. [bctt tweet="Someone needs to hear your story. So get out there and share it." username="tonyarineer"] KEY TAKEAWAYS Confidence and comfortability is important when you are married and sharing a conversation. How Carrie works with her different coaching clients to overcome fear or anxiety. Changing the brain makes a difference in how you see a situation. How to handle a networking event. You don't need to change their life, you just need to change their day. Someone needs to hear your story. So get out there and share it. This episode is sponsored by Sitelock Yes folks, she's back. Holy moly though... a lot has changed with Carrie since she was on the show last (she was episode 7! One of my first guests and I was/am super appreciative of that). Fast forward a few years and knew I needed to have Carrie back on. Her business has exploded (my words) since we spoke last. She's created more products, creates Genesis tutorials for Lynda.com (how awesome is that?), runs the OfficeHours.FM podcast and spent some time working with Crowd Favorite. Oh... and she has added speaker to her list of accomplishments (I haven't had the pleasure of seeing/hearing her speak but I can only imagine it would be awesome). We talked about the disconnect that happens when you want to shift from freelancing to something else. Carrie had some great insight as to why this happens (which tends not to be for one reason only) and of course I had to get a little esoteric with her (I don't know what my obsession with that word is lately). This conversation went in a whole bunch of different directions with this conversation... and let me just tell you... you will be laughing. Carrie is not only uber smart, but she's pretty damn funny (I was laughing throughout the interview and again when writing the show notes). Questions I Asked Carrie Since we last spoke you had gone over to Crowd Favorite and are back working for yourself again. I have a couple questions regarding that shift for you. First, what brought about the decision to work for Crowd Favorite and then what made you decide to go back to working for yourself? When I was on your show last, we talked about changing directions and shifting gears with business. Obviously WordPress isn't going anywhere... where do you see opportunities for people in this space? What do you fee are some challenges with running a profitable business in the WP space? Where do you think the disconnect happens for people who are freelancing and decide they are DONE? Since you've been online for a while, how do you think the landscape has changed and is changing? Where do you want to take your business? Anything you'd go back and tell yourself, say 5 years ago if you wanted to dispel a little wisdom? What You're Going to Learn Where the landscape is headed for opportunities in WordPress How to pick your own space within WordPress How funny Carrie is (yes, I thought that was worth adding here) Carrie's thoughts on marketing and where she can step it up How Carrie's podcast, OfficeHours.FM has helped her business The struggle of keeping sponsorship going with a podcast To say I adore Carrie would be an understatement. I'm sure you can tell by listening to this show that it was a ton of fun and Carrie is a wealth of knowledge. Where to Connect with Carrie Website | Podcast | Twitter
