Check out their upcoming event, Entrepreneurs Summit 2025.Click here to subscribe to our newsletter.About Wendy Jordan:Wendy Jordan is the co-founder and former COO of Encuentra24, the leading marketplace and fully integrated business solution in Central America. She holds a BA in Marketing and Advertising from Universidad Latinoamericana de Ciencia y Tecnología (Panama), and previously worked for companies like Publitesa and Gold Dragon Capital Management Ltd before starting Encuentra24 in 2005.Wendy and her husband built Encuentra24 at a serendipitous time: back in 2005, the Panama government was just starting to show interest in attracting foreign investment. Based on their own experience of having difficulties buying an affordable home in Panama, Wendy and her husband decided to create Panama's online marketplace themselves, and focused on the items/issues which are essential to people's lives: a home, a job, a car, etc.Encuentra24 was bootstrapped for 10 years. Wendy and her team advertised the business B2C by placing ads on buses and taxis and running radio ads; when it came to B2B, they initially sought each and every partner for a 1-1 conversation. They grew the business slowly, through trial and error, and in 2013 faced perhaps their biggest challenge when OLX built offices in Central America in an attempt to take them over. Despite OLX hiring Harvard-educated staff and resorting to things like exclusivity contracts with partners and hiring people fired from Encuentra24, Wendy and her team stayed laser-focused on their goals and the quality of their product, and ended up acquiring OLX's Central American operations a few years later. In 2015 Encuentra24 welcomed Shaun Di Gregorio, founder and CEO of Frontier Digital Ventures, as an investment partner, which enabled them to list themselves on international stock markets and, most prominently, in the Australian Stock Exchange. In 2022 Encuentra24 had a successful exit, after which Wendy left her operational role at the company. Nowadays she's active as a business angel and will soon take on the role of president at EO (Entrepreneurs Organization). The cover portrait was edited by www.smartportrait.ioDon't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Sydney Roach at WPSU in State College recently reported on legislation approved by the Pennsylvania Senate to provide funding to create safe exchange zones for child custody and online marketplace sales. She was drawn to report on this story because she does a lot of shopping on Facebook Marketplace. “I just thought it would be something that would be of interest to a lot of people and especially whenever I discovered some of the story behind it. There was a woman killed in Jonestown a few years ago. And so, after that, Johnstown police put up a safe exchange zone to prevent more tragedies like that. So basically, what it is, is it's just like a parking spot or some sort of spot in public view. In this bill, they define that as either 100ft away from like a law enforcement agency or some sort of like public park or some sort of public place. So, it's in the public eye. And then there also has to be surveillance cameras. And there also has to be a sign saying that it's a safe exchange zone. So, it's a pretty easy thing for municipalities to do. And this bill would just it's grant funding to help more places incorporate that, like the one in Johnstown, “said Roach. Stehpanie Sigafoos is with LeighValleynews.com. She just reported on a local family channeling grief to mission to change college and university culture around the safety of off campus housing after 20-year-old Carly Grozier passed away as a result of injuries suffered in a gas explosion at her off campus home in West Virginia. “Carly had three roommates. They rented an off-campus home, as most juniors do. And when they go to college in four-year environment and unfortunately, it sounds like there were problems right off, you know, right off the bat in terms of dealing with the landlord. There were issues related to the plumbing. There were issues that were certainly brought to the landlord's attention that, you know, kind of sparked this entire thing because they're alleging that the landlord hired an unlicensed contractor to do work on the bathroom. And they're saying he opened a gas valve and then left that gas valve open. And it unfortunately caused a massive gas leak. It caused the home to fill with three times the amount of gas that would typically be servicing the home over a number of days. And so, the home, you know, there was an explosion that was always when Carly lit a candle and she lit a candle because they were told that, in fact, it was not gas leaking, but it was water. It was the sewer that they were smelling. And the contractor said, I'll be back to fix it. And, you know, obviously that never took place because the explosion occurred, “said Sigafoos. Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box
One of the most important aspects of our subscription box is the products we put inside it. Whether you're brand new to business or an experienced subscription box owner, finding the right products at the right prices can be challenging. Where do you start? What about when you begin to grow? How do you buy in bulk? Before you start shopping, you will need your sales tax permit and resellers certificate. File for your sales tax permit first and then you'll be able to get your resellers certificate. Where you head next depends on where you are in your business. I found in my own business that buying product for my growing subscription box was different from buying product for my brick-and-mortar shop or the early days of my subscription box. So how can you find the products you need? 1 - When you're brand new to business: Local Shops/Brands Facebook Wholesale Groups 2 - Once you've established yourself and have some orders behind you: Many of these sources require a reference and/or other proof of business operation. Online Marketplaces such as Faire - You can shop thousands of vendors on one platform with low required minimum order quantities. Direct vendor wholesale site - Go directly to the websites and look for a wholesale link. See if you can apply for a wholesale account with them. Markets or Trade shows -These are scheduled events that happen across the country where hundreds or thousands of vendors come to connect with buyers. You can walk through all their booths, see their products in person, meet with vendors, and place orders. NY Now Dallas Market Center Las Vegas Market America's Mart Market can be overwhelming - I recommend going with a friend! I want you to go to a Market. They opened my mind to brands and vendors I never would have found or considered. I've met vendors at Market who have grown along with me and my business. 3 - You're growing and it's time to start making bigger bulk purchases: When you grow past a certain point, it's time to buy bulk and consider working with overseas manufacturers. Global Marketplace - Alibaba, AliExpress, and IndiaMart are a great way to lower costs for items. I purchased small items first to get comfortable with product quality and shipping time. However, since the items are coming from overseas, you'll need to give them more lead time when ordering. White Label from an Existing Vendor - Vendors allow you to custom-make products under their supply chain and manufacturing process and put your label on it. Sourcing Services - You can work with a sourcing agent who works with manufacturers on your behalf, getting products for you at really great prices. This sourcing agent handles all the communication and organization. My advice for you: Use several different vendors - don't put all your eggs in one basket. Build relationships - get representatives and keep in touch with them. Relationships are so important in our business. Prices are negotiable - don't be afraid to ask. Always ask for bulk pricing or discounts or free shipping or products. The bigger your business gets, the more buying power you have. Up to 80% of your conversion rate is determined by your messaging. Without a clear message, your audience won't understand what you do or how you can help them. But with the right words to mobilize your mission, your customers won't just buy from you once–they'll tell their friends, too. Tim Fung is the co-founder and CEO of Airtasker, a trusted online marketplace that connects people who need work done with people who want to work and have the skills to do the job. Airtasker's mission is to empower people to realize the full value of their skills–to create jobs, income, and purpose, and have a positive impact on the future of work on a global scale. The company's powerful messaging has paved the way for rapid growth and expansion. Prior to starting Airtasker, Tim was a founding team member and investor in telco startup Amaysim, playing a key role in strategy and capital raising. He is a founder and director of several web startups, including online custom shirt design business Joe Button and motorsport event management group Circuit Club. A Compelling Reason to Change When developing Airtasker, Tim knew their biggest challenge would be to get people on the platform. Once they started using it, they would see the value–but getting people to adopt any new technology can be difficult. The solution was to offer users a compelling reason to change their behavior. Most taskers (the people on Airtasker who offer services) were used to a pay-per-lead model, where they paid for advertising in the hopes that it would lead to a job. Airtasker flipped that model on its head: taskers can use the platform for free, see what jobs are available, and apply for as many as they want. Airtasker only takes a percentage fee once the job is booked. They also came up with a compelling reason for customers to try the platform. Unlike other gig economy apps, Airtasker starts by asking their customers to describe their problem (however niche it might be). Then taskers are free to suggest creative solutions. For example, if someone accidentally flies their drone into a tree, they can post on Airtasker for help getting it down. The community-driven model means there are also very few disputes between customers and taskers. Out of hundreds of thousands of tasks completed each month, less than one in 10,000 become disputes. Building a Brand People Resonate With Since Airtasker's inception, Tim and his co-founder have been intentional about building a brand around their mission: to empower people to realize the value of their skills. For example, their “like a boss” campaign featured a variety of taskers who don't fit the traditional model of what a “boss” looks like, but have been able to create a business for themselves using Airtasker. It's a message that resonates with their target audience–both taskers, who enjoy having control over their income, and customers, who appreciate the contribution to the local community. The result is happy customers and powerful word-of-mouth marketing. Enjoy this episode with co-founder & CEO Tim Fung… Quotes “Why do we ask friends and family to do these kinds of jobs when there are so many people out there who want to earn a living?” “There's nothing more motivating than knowing this is your thing and you have to make it work.” “It's kind of like the world's oldest business model in some sense. It's not an innovative business model but it's actually something that hasn't existed yet.” “Having more people in the marketplace makes it a better business for everyone.” “Every place across the world has the commonality of: you need people who have skills and you need to get stuff done. The great thing about the business model is that the local people decide what that thing is.” Links mentioned in this episode: Airtasker website: http://www.airtasker.com Connect with Tim on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/timjfung
