Tonight's guest of the Late Night History podcast is Merryl Tengesdal. Merryl is a trailblazer in the world of aviation as she is, at this time, the only Black woman to ever fly the U-2 “Dragon Lady” spy plane. The U-2 spy plane has conducted high-altitude reconnaissance missions for the US since the 1950s and in the last 10-plus years has achieved a 97% mission success rate. The U-2 is unique in that it requires all pilots to wear specialized pressure suits to fly at altitude — which essentially makes them look more like astronauts than aviators in their single-seat cockpit. We discuss Merryl's life story from childhood to present day. Throughout the episode Merryl shares interesting anecdotes throughout her 13 years flying the U-2, including missions, often 8 hours or more, across five combat deployments. She also tells us about the complicated nature of eating and drinking while in the cockpit. These meals come in toothpaste-like tubes and have some wild flavors like Zapplesauce, which is caffeinated, and even New England Clam Chowda — which as a Massachusetts guy, doesn't sound too appetizing even for me. Merryl is the author of her memoir Shatter The Sky and has many additional anecdotes within those pages, including more detail about the humorous story she shares on here about chauffeuring Steven Spielberg to observe a landing of the Dragon Lady for the movie Bridge of Spies. You can reach out to Merryl by visiting her website: https://merryltengesdal.com/

As the Cold War was taking shape in 1953, the United States accepted Lockheed Corporation's proposal to build the U-2 spy plane, out of absolute necessity. The program has been such a massive success for the US military and CIA, that the plane remains in service today over 64 years later. However, only one black woman has ever flown the U-2. We are honored to welcome United States Air Force Col. Merryl Tengesdal.Colonel Tengesdal's remarkable journey began in the Bronx. Despite facing enormous adversity throughout her Air Force career, Merryl surpassed every expectation. She earned her seat in the cockpit of the most successful spy plane in history, more than 70,000 feet above the earth's surface. The significance of the now legendary U-2 spy plane, nicknamed “Dragon Lady”, cannot be overstated. The program was such a priority for American national security that it became operational and first took flight in 1955, only two years after it was initially proposed. Since retiring in 2017, Merryl may no longer be flying more than 13 miles up into the sky, but she has hardly slowed down. She now works as a personal trainer and even starred on the hit CBS reality show, ‘Tough As Nails'.Merryl Tengesdal is a true inspiration and we highly recommend her book, ‘Shatter the Sky: What Going to the Stratosphere Taught Me About Self-worth, Sacrifice, and Discipline'.

Her memoir is titled Shatter the Sky. . I met Merryl for the first time at an event in which we both participated at the Seattle Museum of Flight, and liked her immediately. In this heartfelt and powerful episode I have the honor to speak with Merryl E. Rothaus about her decade-long journey and multiple attempts to become a mother. She shares openly with us about the three baby losses she faced, how she has navigated her intense grief and what it means to be a "Mother Without Children".Merryl speaks both from a personal perspective as well as from her wise professional expertise. She walks us through many practical ways to work with grief, describes which elements have been most supportive to her along her journey and why we need to start changing the cultural narrative around grief and loss. Merryl introduces us to the worlds of Art and Somatic Based Therapies, Shamanic Practice and Buddhism. We unpack the spiritual reckoning that often accompanies unthinkable loss and discuss the relevance of meaning making. Merryl shares with us about recently turning 50 years old and what this milestone birthday is illuminating for her. This is one of those not-to-be-missed conversations that takes us straight into the heart and depth of womanhood. In contrast, Balut is a common thing to eat and Merryl recommended that it is a MUST TRY thing while visiting the Philippines. All this and more on this episode of the Curious Pavel Podcast Sessions. When a woman owns her most harrowing life experiences deep in her bones, she becomes a gift to her community-- and the world. And, yet, that process of deeply feeling, accepting, and learning from our hardships is both grizzly and grueling. It’s one that few women have the courage to endure, much less emerge from stronger and more free. Merryl Rothaus is a testament to what’s possible for all of us when we say a full-bodied “Yes” to whatever darkness live hurls at us. In this truth-telling conversation, Merryl and I discuss: -Hard truths that many women face around becoming single mothers when they’re not in a relationship and are nearing the end of their childbearing years -How she dealt with infertility struggles -How she lived through two second trimester miscarriages-- one which ended in a 16-hour at-home labor -What happened when she became outraged at the Divine -How she has made peace with being a “Mother without Children,” and the fire in her belly to raise awareness around this unrecognized population of women -Ways to stay connected with your loved ones after they pass through honoring the wild wisdom of grief in your daily life Merryl’s the real deal. And she’s brave enough to speak out about experiences that would otherwise remain occluded in shame and cultural shadow. Visit Merryl’s website here: www.merrylrothaus.com Heartbreak comes into our lives like an unwelcome stranger, robbing us of who we are. *CORRECTED* In 1962, director John Frankenheimer and pop star Frank Sinatra joined forces to turn a biting indictment of Cold War paranoia and McCarthyism politics known as The Manchurian Candidate into a film which would launch both actor and filmmaker into the highest strata of celebrity and coining a political term that would last beyond their lifetimes. But does the film deliver the goods or should it jump into the lake? MovieDude Eric, Kent & special guest Cody play a game of solitaire to find out. * Note: While the discussion is primarily focused on the 1963 classic, there are spoilers for the 2004 remake starring Denzel Washington and Merryl Streep as well.
