Joel threw open the doors to his Melbourne Comedy Festival show Thanks For Being Here and, mate, the who's who of reality royalty and Aussie faves turned up. Picture Gamble and Pettifleur sippin’ bubbles with Dr Kate, Susie and Kyla from Housewives, Ash Pollard, Lucy Durack, Khanh Ong, Zoe Badwi, Myf Warhurst, Grant Denyer, Urzila Carlson… and that's just scratching the surface. It was basically a Logies afterparty but with more laughs and less awkward speeches. Meanwhile, Robert Irwin’s stripped off for Bonds — There are lizards, snakes, spiders... and a fair bit of crikey energy. Steve would be proud.Plus, it’s New Music Friday and we meet Delia—Britain’s first female bouncer who wants to rebrand herself as an “ejection technician”. Not long ago, Australian theatre star Elise McCann was struggling. Like everyone else in the entertainment industry, her work ground to a screeching halt early in the pandemic, and she turned to mindfulness and meditation for help. But unfortunately, it wasn't that easy. Elise's good friend and fellow actor Lucy Durack was struggling, too. In fact, she felt like she couldn't even get meditation right: she was listening to guided meditations while changing her baby's nappies in an effort to fit the practice into her day-to-day. Disenfranchised, the pair relied on one another for pep talks during lockdowns, and realised: they couldn't be the only ones feeling like meditation wasn't meant for them. So, they decided to share their pep talks with the world, and Hey Lemonade was born. But in order to take their new well-being app to market, they needed help - and how do two seasoned actors prepare for a meeting with one of Australia's biggest names in business? In 1983, something was happening in the Western states – the birth of a training course focused entirely on the Musical Theatre. There was no music theatre education in the country, and after starting the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Dr Geoff Gibbs made the creation of the course his next goal. For nearly 20 years, Denis Follington was on the staff of this much sought Musical Theatre BA at WAAPA. The course has graduated students including Meow Meow, Eddie Perfect, Lisa McCune, Dean Bryant, Lucy Durack, Rodney Dobson, Carmel Dean and Simon Gleeson. In 1997, he took the helm and steered the course for another 3 years as Head of the department. The course garnered a national reputation for producing graduates who were prepared, focused, knowledgable and dependable. WAAPA graduates walked into the country’s commercial musicals – and proved themselves adept at television and plays too. Impressed with the success of the course at WAAPA, he was lured by Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore to build a Music Theatre course of their own, attracting students from around the world.STAGES spoke to Denis about the essentials of such an education, the history of the course at WAAPA and his first cast recording of a Broadway show.

Better Than Yesterday, with Osher Günsberg

Lucy Durack is a singer and actress from Australia who came to prominence as Glinda the good witch in the Australian production of Wicked. Lucy's method for creating the life she desired is astonishing. You can follow Lucy on Twitter @lucydurack (https://twitter.com/lucydurack) Her story of how she manifested her dream role, how she stayed ready for when the opportunity came her way - is incredibly inspiring. I can't wait for you to hear this. You can see Lucy perform in Wizard Of Oz, which just wrapped its run in Sydney but is heading to Adelaide and Melbourne in the coming months. I won't lie - there's some nerdy musical theatre stuff on the way, but that's ok. I'll not apologise for loving musicals. I feel they're a wonderful form of storytelling that transcend the generations. So take a big breath in, let a big breath out - and prepare to bask in the glow of the radiant energy of the fabulous Lucy Durack. You might know her as 'Glinda the Good Witch' in Wicked. Lucy Durack is the princess of Australian musical theatre. She played Glinda up until she was five months pregnant and suffered morning sickness throughout which led to her running off stage, sometimes seven times a performance, just to vomit. But she almost didn't get there at all after being told she'd never make it in musical theater. So, she did a semester of a law degree, packed her bags, and moved home to Perth before deciding to give it one last shot. Now, she's just like the rest of us struggling to get her two-year-old to eat vegetables.
