Send us a textDr. Maria Chavez is the chair of the political science department at Pacific Lutheran University where she specializes in American government, public policy, Latino as well as racial and ethnic policies. She has published four books about Latinos in America. Chavez shares her insights on the Latino vote in the 2024 Presidential Election. Recent polling by NBC News and Telemundo finds Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump among Latino voters. But when you compare her numbers to Latino support for past Democratic presidential candidates , there is a noticeable decline. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is showing strength especially among Latino men. In God's Kingdom, you are a masterpiece of His creation. We are called to expand His dominion. Both the Old and New Testaments reveal our divine purpose: to be kings and priests serving God. Christ living within us is the glorious hope we carry. We have been given with every spiritual blessing to fulfill our God-given purpose. Step out in faith, trusting in the power of God's anointing to advance His Kingdom. Fear cannot overcome faith. Boldly step forward and accomplish the purpose for which you were created! Modern living relies on energy to power daily routines, impacting both the environment and personal well-being. Energy-efficient homes emerge as solutions, blending comfort with environmental responsibility. Leveraging advanced technologies and renewable sources, these homes minimize waste and reduce carbon footprints, benefiting inhabitants' health. The prevalent use of fossil fuels in energy production poses severe health risks, releasing pollutants that affect respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Additionally, fossil fuel extraction contributes to resource depletion and environmental imbalances, endangering public health. Recognizing the interconnection between daily life and energy consumption is crucial. Urgency to address fossil fuel dependency intensifies considering rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and resource depletion. Embracing energy efficiency and renewables safeguards the planet for future generations and preserves present health and wellness. Informed choices illuminate a path to a healthier, more sustainable future, emphasizing the profound impact of our decisions beyond mere convenience. Join Host Bernice Butler as she explores and unpacks the intersection of Energy Production and Consumption with our Health with David Turcotte with Lowell Healthy Homes Program and Maria Chavez with the Union of Concerned Scientists. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/healthy-radio/support

Their music encourage Muslim and North African women to be defiantly themselves. Little is know about them. They perform in burqas, and remain elusive and anonymous online for security reasons. The band's name "Taqbir" means the Islamic call to prayer, and they sing in Arabic. Habibi is an American rock band from Brooklyn, NY. The band's name "Habibi" means "my love" in Arabic, a word that the vocalist Rahill Jamalifard often used growing up in her Iranian household. Their music is a blend of psychedelic rock and 60s girl-group harmonies. They sing in English. Riit is the stage name of Rita Claire Mike-Murphy, a Canadian Inuk musician from Pangnirtung, Nunavut. Riit creates her own space in the electropop world, with deep rhythmic vocals layered over synth cuts, and electronic textures. She sings in Inuktitut. ABUL3EES is a rapper from East Jerusalem. I found him on a late night Soundcloud deep dive. His laid back music style is a contrast to its context. His beats are simple, his flow is dribbling and conversational, but his rhymes are complex and clever. He raps in Arabic. Slash Need is a sexy spacy goth electric grunge band from Toronto. They are one of my favourite discoveries from attending Debaser shows, and I would love to share them with the Radio Al-Hara universe.
On Wednesday's show: Pres. Joe Biden officially ended the COVID-19 national emergency declaration this week after three years. The declaration enabled the government to make large-scale, decisive moves in the realms of public health and the economy to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. We discuss what its end means for Houston and reflect on its impact. Also this hour: We discuss the latest developments in politics in our weekly roundup. And recent kidnappings in Mexico brought the topic of medical tourism to the forefront, but it's not just Mexico. We learn why Houston artist Maria Chavez traveled to Japan for brain surgery and why many others are leaving the country for medical care as well.
On Friday's show: As the much-rumored potential state takeover of HISD looms over the educational landscape of Greater Houston, Jackie Anderson, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, talks about the wait for a decision and what a takeover could mean for the district's teachers. Also this hour: We discuss what the Supreme Court heard recently about the Biden administration's partial student debt cancellation plan and what it might mean for Houstonians paying off student loans. Then: Could the Tennessee Titans really wear throwback Houston Oilers jerseys next season when they play the Texans? It's possible – but is it good, bad, or ugly? This week's “non-expert” panel weighs in. And sound artist Maria Chavez, a former Houstonian and UH alum, returns to live performance after brain surgery. She performs tonight at The Orange Show.
Born again connected to the vine. God has given us eternal life, we shall never parish, neither shall anyone snatch us out of God's hand. Maria Chavez is a pioneer of Abstract Turntablism, a self-described practice she developed under the guidance of Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening. Born in Lima, Peru and raised in Houston, she cut her teeth as a DJ spinning techno and drum & bass, but the male chauvinism of that scene roused her to experiment further with the materiality of vinyl, using broken needles and non-musical sounds. Oliveros inspired her to ditch dance parties for improvisation with a single turntable, an artistic practice which has evolved to include installations, workshops, visual art, and curation. A true sound artist (she adamantly eschews the label “musician”), until recently, Chavez had released only one recording, 2004's Those Eyes Of Hers, focusing instead on her career as longform performance. But after beginning a medical sabbatical in 2019, which forced her to cease touring (a year before the rest of the world shut down), Maria began slowly releasing new recordings into the world. In this episode, we discuss recent and upcoming collaborations, her switch to using four turntables (with double needles), and staking out her rightful place in art history contra White supremacist power structures. After a stellar week for premieres, we wrap up for this week with an amazing, high octane techno track, from hardware enthusiast Stefan Goldmann. Goldmann's music has been released on labels like Perlon, Innervisions, and others since 2001. In further years, Goldmann has created a tight relationship with Berlin's Berghain and Panorama Bar club, for which he publishes a column, is a co-author of its book, and is the creator of the Elektroakustischer Salon event series. Goldmann's label, Macro was founded by in 2007 and has released some legendary records from equally incredible artists. Its releases range from techno tracks to symphonic recordings. It has also been home to releases from artists such as KiNK, Maria Chavez, Peter Kruder, Pete Namlook, Raudive, Santiago Salazar and remixes by Pépé Bradock, Ricardo Villalobos and The Knife's Oni Ayhun. A series of three 7″ on records on Macro, sees Stefan Goldmann probing the upper temporal reaches of techno. Clocking in at 150 bpm, these tracks are bold and blazing signals for a collective return to highly energised club experiences. More bouncy than harsh, these tracks show impressively how different tempos allow for their own variety of joyful expression. Toady we premiere the track ‘Geared' which finishes out the 6 track release with raw voltage and sparks flying. The blistering yet functional techno bomb is driven by well crafted analogue tool. Bleep heaven at 150bpm, sounds good to me. Maria Chavez never wanted to be an artist, but her life led her to become an abstract turntablist who has reinvented the playback arts by mixing broken records with broken needles. Her art is almost like listening to real-time sculptures, where the vinyl’s grooves are the topography. But how did we end up talking about owls?

Composed by Luc Ferrari and Turntables, Electronics, prepared phono cartridges by Otomo Yoshihide. Christian Marclay, from Record Without a Cover (excerpt, 1999). Marked with instructions, "Do not store in a protective package," my copy is a reissue of the disc first released in 1985, done by Japanese label Locus Solus. The naked record will naturally become increasingly damaged from shipping, storing, and playing the record, all becoming part of the work. In essence, the owner is implored to progressively destroy the release, allowing it to become scratched and bruised from accumulating damage that make each copy unique. My copy actually skips a lot. In the passage I am playing I often had to press the needle down a little bit to get through a skip. There is faintly recorded jazz music found on some of the disc, while other parts are pretty much composed only of surface noise. The Archive Mix in which I play two additional tracks at the same time to see what happens. Here are two more tracks of modern experimental turntablism: Tsunoda Tsuguto, “Air Pocket” (1997) from Turntable Solos (1999). Merzbow, “Batztoutai—The Nightengale's Song” (1985) from Turntable Solos (1999). The incidental music heard while I'm speaking is from a damaged and skipping CD that I have of Sun Ra. The track is “Sound Spectra/ Spec Sket” from the album Other Planes of There (1964). For more information about the history of turntablism, read my book: Electronic and Experimental Music (sixth edition), by Thom Holmes (Routledge 2020). Notes for this episode can be found on my blog: Noise and Notations.

When you think of great leaders having a lasting impact, Anna Maria Chávez, Executive Vice President and Chief Growth Officer for the National Council on the Aging, has created transformational change for millions of girls and women around the world. She was the CEO of the Girl Scouts and also one of the co-founding women, along with Sheryl Sandberg, and Condoleezza Rice to create the Ban Bossy Campaign. Anna’s servant leadership mindset started while growing up in Eloy Arizona, and she shares in this interview, how at the age of 12 years old, she decided to become a civil rights attorney. Joining the Girl Scouts at a young age, helped Anna to learn leadership skills, and gave her the chance to give back to the community. Listen to this discussion and learn about the influence our actions have on girls growing up, why having a mentor is so important, what it is like to be a “first of” leader and the challenges and benefits it can have on a community. At the end of our discussion, Anna encourages each of us to take action and create a lasting impact on our future. 10 Transformational Leadership Insights: What You Do Creates an Impression: “We can’t think about future leaders without thinking about the influence over girls and boys today. They are watching us…how leadership appears at the dais and the podium”- Anna Maria Chávez. Everything you do is making an impression on young people around you. We Need Diverse Leadership: “We need leaders from different perspectives”- Anna Maria Chávez. It is important to have different voices who collectively can come together and represent diversity. Share Resiliency with Others: Anna helped raise 2,000,000 girls as CEO of the Girl Scouts and also gave her son, a front row seat to witness resiliency in action. Anna’s son had the chance to witness what leaders go through on a daily basis. Ban the Word Bossy: Anna shared an insider look at creating the Ban Bossy campaign that featured Beyoncé. After receiving a call from Sheryl Sandberg, together with Condoleezza Rice, the three leaders established why it is so important to change the narrative for girls and how they are labeled. Anna shares how something happens around 3rdor 4th grade when negative messages dampen girls’ spirit. They stop raising their hand to fit in. By banning the word bossy, it helped change how girls are perceived and how they in turn, perceive themselves. Everyone needs a Mentor who sees raw potential. Anna shares how mentors have helped her throughout her career. Great bosses give their time and are patient. Anna shares how she is still in contact with her first boss who has had a lasting impact on her career. Mentors teach important lessons. Anna shares how “leadership is never done. It is a muscle that you continue to build and every day”. Young girls need a path to live their true potential. Anna viewed the Girl Scouts as the largest prevention program to help girls know their dreams are worth of it. While CEO, Anna gave girls hope, and told them “…you can do anything, become President or Secretary State…” and so much more. If we don’t invest in girls and also in boys early, it has an impact when they reach retirement. Now we are seeing a continuum of issues, because we didn’t invest in girls early on, it has an impact on women over 60. A women’s economic security is impacted over her lifetime. Older adults want to be independent. Anna learned early on in her career, how people born with certain attributes, wanted to be able to do things for themselves and needed access to programs that could help them. At the end of the interview, we discuss how 60% of women over the age of 60 years old, feel financial insecurity. Here are steps you can do today to make sure you are prepared for retirement. 7 Actions You Can Take Today Start your financial planning now. Put something into retirement now, at any age, we should be planning for the future. Anna shares how a friend of hers says “Don’t buy shoes, Buy Buildings.” Make sure your nest egg is large enough for your future needs. You are paying into an infrastructure. You need to pay attention to economic policies in the world. Huge decisions are being made and everyone should make sure whoever you elect, represents your interests. Close the financial Pay-Gap. Men and Women are still not receiving equal pay– if you are the caregiver you have to cover expenses not only for yourself, but also for others you care for, and on average women make $300 less per month in retirement compared to men. Educate yourself. Raise the issues that are most important to elected officials. Don’t be afraid to talk to other women. Ask for advice, and make a plan to create financial security. Get involved. Read as much you can, volunteer, get on the board of a non-profit, or support someone who is running for office. Be happy about your choices. Get passionate about things you care about. “We have a great future ahead of us”- Anna Maria Chávez It is with sincere gratitude I thank Anna for this incredible interview. In this month's episode we highlight Sonosphere's Sound Observations series. Sound Observations is a quarterly performance and lecture series featuring experimental artists from around the nation. We were honored to host turntablist and DJ Maria Chavez, and vocalist and musician Christina Carter of The Charalambides on May 11, 2018. Maria and Christina's site specific works took place in the atrium of the Crosstown Concourse building, an old Sears Roebuck building retrofitted for art galleries, residential and commercial spaces. The result is echoing vocals and scratchy, vinyl sounds that swirl up a red staircase to the entrance of the stage. Thanks for listening. www.sonospherepodcast.com @sonospod
Brooklyn based and Houston raised, Sandy Ewen has been incredibly active for the past several years as an improviser with an idiosyncratic approach to the guitar that is all her own. She's worked closely with Maria Chavez, Weasel Walter, Damon Smith and Tom Carter. Her language for guitar is incredibly evocative and tactile. She is a wonderful addition to the New York scene as well as a delightful person to spend an afternoon with, talking about a broad range of topics.
Born in Lima, Peru, Maria Chavez is an an abstract turntablist, sound artist, and DJ. Accidents, coincidence, and failures are themes that unite her sound sculptures, installations, and other works with her solo turntable performance practice. She visited Richmond for a ten-day artist residency at the University of Richmond and to kick off Sound Arts Richmond, a citywide sound arts festival that continues through August of this year. I spoke with Maria as she was installing Topography of Sound: Peaks and Valleys Series, a solo exhibition of new paintings and illustrations based on microscopic images of vinyl and needle. Chavez chose to show this work as two-dimensional rather than as a sound installation because, in the sound arts world and in the art markets, the expectation is that sound art can only be emitted sound from a speaker or from a person. And, as you will hear, Chavez is not a person who likes to be boxed in by external expectations.
In this episode, we cover golden-era dubstep, Arcadia's outlandish festival design and using turntables for sound art.

Last year Sonosphere visited Marfa, Texas for the Marfa Myths music festival created by Mexican Summer and Ballroom Marfa. Now in its fourth year, Marfa Myths has grown to a three day fest with hundreds of individuals from around the country in attendance. This year's festival is upon us, so let's travel back in time to Marfa Myths 2016 during a two-day wind storm, where I talk with sound artist Maria Chavez about her performance informed by the wind and chards of vinyl; where harpist Mary Lattimore shares insight into last year's album, At the Dam, informed by road trips out west. Head over this year, March 9-12 to Marfa Myths 2017 and you won't regret it. Tickets at mexicansummer.com
Do you remember those hot humid days of summer that threatened to explode into thunderous storms and torrential rain? Listening to this week's episode of Sound It Out will bring you back into those days, with field recordings, performances, and impromptu conversations taking place at the Electric Eclectics festival in Meaford, Ontario at the end of July, 2016. Hear Faun Fables, Lary 7, Maria Chavez, and Jennifer Castle along with other intriguing improvisatory scenarios! The multi-sensorial encounters occasioned by this three day festival extended the improvisational happenings onstage out into the wild landscape around it, fostering extraneous joy and jest in every resounding sentient present. This episode originally aired on CFRU 93.3FM on Tuesday October 11, 2016 at 5pm EST.
Welcome to DIYbio.FM, a new podcast exploring the state of the DIYbio movement. Each episode, we’ll be talking to experts and amateurs, working with communities and garage biologists, and even trying out DIYbio projects of our own to answer one question - are we really in the midst of a DIYbio revolution? Episode 00 - the very beginning. We’re starting simple this week (at least, we thought we were) by trying to define exactly what DIYbio is. It turned to be a harder question to tackle than we expected. To help us, we sought the expertise of some experienced DIYbiologists, including Bioeconomy Capital managing director Rob Carlson, and BioCurious community lab project manager Maria Chavez. To dive a little further into the question, we also took a look at who does DIYbio in this episode, landing an interview with wicked-cool artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg. Not only does Heather Dewey-Hagborg have a name you could joyfully repeat for ages (which we do non-stop in minutes 1:00-15:50 of Episode 00), she also shows us what DIYbio is through her project Stranger Visions. Links:Here’s a cool article on the Altair 8800 from Make Magazine. If you want to learn more about Rob Carlson, his book Biology is Technology, and his enterprises, check out his website here.BioCurious - the community lab in Sunnyvale, CA - has cool projects you can check out, as well as the bio for Maria Chavez.Heather Dewey-Hagborg’s project Stranger Visions, and her broader gallery of work, can be read about on her website.Follow updates from DIYbio.FM on twitter @DIYbioFM

Scott Miller, author of The Heart Sings – A Perfect Love, knows first-hand about finding and losing love – many times. "I was in love with Maria Chavez the moment I first saw her in high school." He took Maria to the Senior Prom, but did not see her again and married someone else. Fast-forward three-plus decades, when Scott's wife of 32 years left him and he wanted to end his own life. Miracle or fate – Maria found him on Facebook. They began a fairy-tale romance and were married in Belize on 12-10-14. Why that date? 12+10+14 = 36 years they were apart. Maria wore the same shawl she wore to Prom. But their happy new beginning turned tragic: Maria died 113 days later.
