The Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board sets minimum prices for milk in the state. It's designed to ensure dairy farmers have fair opportunities to sell their product while consumers pay a competitive price. Milk is sold like any other product and the market often determines the price in most states. The Milk Marketing Board wanted to find out what would happen if they dropped minimum pricing and commissioned a study of the issue. Phil Gruber, the News Editor of Lancaster Farming reported on the study and was on The Spark Wednesday where he described what the study found,"We would see maybe a small increase in the amount of milk that Pennsylvanians drink, but that would be more than offset by a pretty serious likely decline in the number of companies bottling milk in the state and in the number of dairy farms." The study found that if there weren't minimum prices on milk, 57% of processors would be at risk of bankruptcy. It's estimated the state would produce 10% less milk. The study concluded the loss of minimum pricing and the aftereffects would cost the state's economy $2.8 billion, eliminating $700 million in wages and 10,000 jobs. Gruber indicated it doesn't appear the system will change,"There was not an imminent decision to do away with with minimum price. Here was something that had been talked about within the industry and disgruntled farmers and things. I would expect minimum pricing to stay around here in Pennsylvania." The Saint Lucia Marketing Board with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture is taking steps to strengthen the delivery of its goods and services. This move comes on the heels of a recently conducted analysis of the organization's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development, Hon. Alfred Prospere, noted the “critical role the Saint Lucia Marketing Board plays in assisting farmers.” As one of the leading advocates for the 54-year-old organization, he has pledged support to improving its competitiveness. “We understand that the Marketing Board is facing tremendous challenges, like competition from Massy Stores and the hotels. No more do our farmers have to rely solely on the Marketing Board to sell their produce. They can decide whether they sell to Massy which I was told offers a better price, or they can go straight to the hotels where they can get even more value. But the Marketing Board will always be important to the Ministry of Agriculture and I am hoping that the new board will identify the issues affecting the farmers in the sector to ensure that the Marketing Board can continue to live up to its mandate,” the minister said. Most recently, the Saint Lucia Marketing Board strengthened its human resource complement by providing training for employees in Post-Harvest Handling and Food Safety. This was one of many strategic undertakings as the Board implements international food safety standards and improves services.

NOLA Chefs’ Aid for the Philippines brings together – here in our great city of New Orleans – our love of good food and our equally strong love of family and community. We know what it is like to suffer. After eight years parts of our city are still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Our suffering helps us to keep focused on what is most important in life, and it urges us to reach out with a helping hand to those who also suffer. In response to the devastation wrought on the Philippines by Super Typhoon Haiyan, New Orleans chefs are banding together for an evening of food and fun, with all proceeds going directly to the Philippines where it is most needed. Nina Camacho has assembled a fantastic team to help make this event a reality. Susan Ford, Publisher of Louisiana Kitchen & Culture Magazine, Ewell Smith, former Executive Director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, and Wendy Waren, VP Communications for the Louisiana Restaurant Association are working tirelessly to make this event a success. In addition, the Executive Board of the American Culinary Federation of New Orleans (ACFNO), Philippine American United Council of Louisiana (PAUCLA), Filipino American Lions Club of LA, and Vice District Governor, 8-S, Lions Clubs International, Robert Romero and more will be volunteering their time, talent, and treasure for this event. Ralph Brennan, Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group, GW Fins Executive Chef/Owner Tenney Flynn, and Brigtsen’s Executive Chef/Owner Frank Brigtsen will be Co-Chef Chairs and over 30 chefs from around the state will be participating, lending their talents and spins on popular Filipino dishes. Entertainment and Music for the evening will be headlined by Jazz Trumpeter Duke Heitger and Friends. A bit of Filipino culture will be included with cultural dance and costumes by all Filipinos present. The Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel is a Platinum level sponsor and the event will be held in its Grand Ballrooms on December 16, 2013. Many have stepped up to donate food and spirits, and the event will have an extensive Silent Auction with something for everyone. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, November 26 at http://NOLAChefsAid.com. Donations will be accepted there as well. Donations can also be made online to our partner http://NAFCONUSA.org. Full show notes available at http://catholicfoodie.com.
