Join our Patreon to get access to exclusive monthly calls: https://www.patreon.com/TheThinkingMuslimIs the European Union a model for Muslim unity? Can the often fractious and politically weak Muslim world improve its regional strength and international standing by pooling economic and even political sovereignty and creating a zone of prosperity that harnesses talents and halts a brain drain to the West? Until 1924, the Muslim world came under a caliphate; many calling for a modern unity cite the EU as a model. But is the EU really something to aspire to? What binds the EU states is their unity, which is fracturing under the weight of what my guest today calls Euro Whiteness. Today, many Muslims are being marginalised not just by EU nation states but in a larger sense by an EU that observes itself to be a paradise, protecting its borders from Eastern barbarians – the jungle, as Joseph Borel referred to the world outside. To help us understand the EU, what it is, and what its failings are, I have the pleasure of speaking today to Mehreen Khan. We need to talk about a Far Right EU. Nativists and ultraconservatives are being actively courted by the European mainstream including at the level of the EU. There's the advent of prime minister Giorgia Meloni, with her party's roots in Italian fascism, and then there's the popularity in France of Marine Le Pen, previously seen as too extreme. But would a Le Pen presidency really mark a fundamental change for the EU? Or even an existential threat, as commentators have long warned? The disarming answer from the author and think tanker Hans Kundnani is, probably not. The EU has already veered onto a course that's compatible with the likes of Le Pen and Meloni — away from social welfare as a defining feature and more toward an agenda that draws on ethnic and cultural identity. It's one of the ideas that Hans unpacks in his new book, Eurowhiteness. In this second of two episodes that take their cue from that book, Hans is in conversation with Mehreen Khan. Mehreen was an EU correspondent for the Financial Times in Brussels, before joining The Times of London as economics editor. She observes how pro-Europeans can also make pretty good nativists — and how many are prepared to tolerate the far right, just as long as they don't challenge European monetary union or foreign policy. So with far-right ideas in the ascendant, is there scope for optimism? Europe's second largest political group, the Socialists & Democrats, could consider a spell in opposition. That would avoid a grand coalition with the group that's currently the largest, the centre right, together with the far right. But that may be wishful thinking. And as for the Greens, their agenda may make it hard to rely on them to take a stand. Hans and Mehreen are joined by Helena Malikova, who moderates this episode, which is part of our Brussels So White series about race and the EU. Helena Malikova is talking in a personal capacity and the views expressed are not attributable to her employer, the European Commission. Europeans are comfortable talking about whiteness in the American context. But when it comes to their own continent, not so much. That serves to shut down an important conversation about police brutality, decolonisation and migration. The resistance to discussing whiteness is starkly apparent at the level of the EU and it's another sign the European project is heading in a troubling direction. That's the assessment of Hans Kundnani, the author of a ground-breaking new book titled Eurowhiteness. Hans is an associate fellow at the think tank Chatham House in London, and he was previously with the German Marshall Fund and the European Centre for Foreign Relations. In his book, Hans describes an EU that still presents itself as congenial and cosmopolitan. In reality, he says, the EU has become much harder edged — and much more about protecting cultural and ethnic identity. Marking her return to EU Scream is Mehreen Khan, a former EU correspondent for the Financial Times in Brussels and now economics editor at The Times of London. Mehreen says Eurowhiteness is a rich concept — one that helps shed light on the Balkan wars, the colonial reflexes of senior EU figures as well as the quasi religious aspect of some pro-Europeanism. Hans and Mehreen are joined by Helena Malikova, who moderates the first of two episodes that are part of our BrusselsSoWhite series about race in the EU. Helena is talking in a personal capacity and the views expressed are not attributable to her employer, the European Commission. This podcast contains some coarse language. --- 2022 was a bad year for gender equality.  It was the year Roe v Wade was overturned and anti-trans legislation and hate surged in the United States of America, the year women were jailed and killed in Iran for their clothing, and the year that female students in Afghanistan were banned from attending university by the Taliban.    At a time when women's rights are under attack in so many places, it's more important than ever to think globally and stand in solidarity with women around the world. Feminism isn't just about the rights of women in the Western world – it's a global movement that fights for the rights and equality of women everywhere. And on International Women's Day, we have the chance to come together and stand in solidarity with women all over the globe.    In this special event with Mona Eltahawy, hear from one of the world's most prominent feminists and a fierce advocate for women's rights. Eltahawy's writing has sparked vital conversations about the ways in which young women are leading the charge for change, and the challenges and issues that women face around the world. She takes a no-holds-barred approach to tackling some of the most pressing issues facing women today, including sexual violence, reproductive rights, and the patriarchy.  This event was chaired by the Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Spokesperson for Anti-racism, Education, International Aid, and Animal Welfare, Senator Mehreen Faruqi. Mehreen has been an unflinching voice on social, environmental and racial justice, pushing to dismantle the systems of power, privilege and patriarchy that allow these injustices to continue.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mehreen Faruqi has more identity titles than most! She's a Muslim, a migrant, a mother, a feminist, an engineer, an academic and a Greens Senator. She also has a number of ‘firsts' to her name. Most notably, the first Muslim woman to sit in an Australian parliament (NSW 2013) and later the first Muslim elected to the Australian Senate (2018). She is a passionate advocate for the environment, climate justice and women's rights, and a staunch anti-racism campaigner. In fact, there is little about contemporary Australia that Mehreen doesn't have a stake in, and a view about. Her book Too Migrant, Too Muslim, Too Loud is a sweeping romp through her life and the issues that keep her awake at night. A wonderful conversationalist, Mehreen is one of those rare women who didn't ‘become' a changemaker, she just seems born that way. She is an inveterate ‘fixer' who cannot walk past a problem of inequity without trying to solve it. Her choice to leave Pakistan to seek a better life in Australia for her young family didn't initially go to plan when she encountered unexpected and at times shocking levels of racism. That and her observations of Aussie complacency around the issues that she cared deeply about, such as the environment, women and the treatment of migrants are what politicised her. Her career path has been tough and the backlash has at times been painful. But in true changemaker style, Mehreen's life mantra is “Feel the fear and do it anyway”. Mehreen's story is the second in our ‘Changemaker' series, in which we highlight the extraordinary efforts of some stunning, audacious and gutsy Australian women. As guest curator of a new exhibition, ‘Australian Women Changemakers', which opened at the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) in June 2022, BroadTalk host Virginia Haussegger has spent hundreds of hours pouring over feminist activism and advocacy, chasing that holy grail of insight about ‘what makes a changemaker?'. In the series we explore the courage, motivations and importantly the cost of being a changemaker. BroadTalk is produced by Martyn Pearce for BroadTalk Media.Get in the picture with BroadTalk! Hilarious and heart-warming and utterly compelling, Hidden Lessons lets you in on the life secrets all teachers know. You're in at 7 a.m., there until 7 p.m. and marking into the late hours. You've got one student who's a full-time carer, another who's pregnant and a third who's just joined a gang. You haven't got enough textbooks to go around, and one of the parents just called you an 'extremist'. You've just gone through a devastating heartbreak, and you have to teach Romeo and Juliet to 30 hormonal 14-year-olds. Welcome to life as a teacher. This is a world that all of us know, but most of us have completely forgotten. It's a world where you're working 50-hour weeks, but you're still just a part-time teacher, because the rest of the time, you're a security guard, a nurse, a counsellor or a friend. It's also a world where you spend all day with some of the most interesting people you know. And even when the lesson plan has been abandoned, you're still learning. Mehreen started teaching at 21, and by the time she left 10 years later, she'd learnt a bit about teenagers and a lot about life. This is her story.

Today's episode is the second of three headline conversations that I hosted live at Renew Fest in May, and it's incredible to have such an energetic and progressive crowd in the background of the conversation. Mehreen Faruqi is a civil & environmental engineer, academic, lecturer, & researcher, and was Australia's first female Muslim MP in the NSW house, and is now Australia's first Federal Muslim Senator. In this conversation she shares her story of migrating to Australia in 1992 with her husband and 1 year old son, and how coming from Pakistan she just expected Australia to be this place that had it all figured out. You know, it's a developed and wealthy country, it has good ‘metrics of success' in terms of things like GDP and life expectancy, etc; and she tells how when she got here she experienced something completely different. She experienced what it's like to be treated differently for being different. She found that struggle for equality is universal Now, being an engineer myself I have been ‘trained', so to speak, to solve problems. Honestly that's what I was told all throughout my studies. Here is a problem, find the parameters, the set of numbers that represents the problem at hand, find the right formula to crunch them or manipulate those parameters, then solve the problem and move onto the next one. Mehreen is an engineer too, but we don't talk about the set of numbers or agenda items she's trying to 'solve' as a politician. We talk about BIG issues like racism, sexism, and environmental destruction, and how these are not problems that can be solved from that Engineering mindset. These issues are not isolated. They are coming from the same place, the same mentality, which is our lack of connection and relation to this planet and each other. We can't solve these issues by having isolated solutions. She shares that when facing these societal issues we all have choices. Those choices include who we vote for and the leaders that we put in place at the top, but also the actions that we take and the grassroots community campaigns that we show up to and support, and that THEY WORK. With that, please enjoy this conversation, as well as the energy from the live crowd at Renew Fest, with Federal Senator, Mehreen Faruqi

Gone are the days where local politics amount to reelecting erstwhile high school classmates to fill potholes and grow schools. Policy attorney by day and public servant by night, Mehreen Butt, sister to our host, is a Pakistani American town councilor in Wakefield, MA. She joins us to speak about her unique experience as the first American Muslim woman elected to a select board in the state. Believing steadfastly that government is good and public service is a way to give back, she decided to run in 2016 to fulfill a duty “to be the voice for people that don't have a seat at the table.” As there's no handbook on how to be a town councilor, we find out how she acquired support from apolitical aunties and uncles, invaluable coaching from Emerge, and an unsolicited declaration from her father that Obama and Abe Lincoln had both been defeated before. She lost that election. However, she reran in 2017 and was recently reelected for her second three-year term. To her surprise, she liked it a lot more than she thought she would. If you're wondering how town officials can make a difference, consider small but meaningful actions like liaising with the police department regarding implicit bias training, installing a Pride flag, and dedicating funds to protect lakes. So why, we ask, is representation in local politics important? She believes diversity makes for the strongest policy. Case in point: the iconic 2017 photo of exclusively white, right, long-in-the-tooth congressmen considering the future of women's healthcare. It's noted, again, how minorities in power don't just lead but pull others up with them, so that they're not the lone woman or POC in the room where it happens. We learn that it takes an average of seven asks for a woman to agree to run for office; thus, every time Mehreen crosses paths with a potential advocate, you'd better believe she's making that ask. This interview with Mehreen Butt was recorded in November 2020. See what Mehreen is up to as Town Councilor, or fangirl over fellow inspirational female leaders of color such as Sumbul Siddiqui (the first Muslim mayor in Massachusetts) or the Squad. Also check out two organizations she adores, Muslim Advocates, a civil rights organization, and Emgage, a civic nonprofit that encourages American Muslims to be more involved in their communities.
