Can a gentle movement practice reshape your life? Meet Nick Strauss-Klein, a Guild-certified Feldenkrais practitioner and founder of The Feldenkrais Project, who shares his journey from a concert pianist sidelined by a repetitive strain injury to a passionate advocate and teacher of the Feldenkrais Method. Discover how his experience sparked a profound interest in the intricate relationship between physics, cognition and human learning. We get to the heart of Moshé Feldenkrais' groundbreaking work in somatics, exploring how his own quest for healing led to the development of this unique practice of "practical neuroplasticity". Through gentle, non-violent self-exploration and an emphasis on making subtle distinctions in movement, the Feldenkrais Method fosters a deep awareness of the body and mind. Nick highlights the central role of the nervous system and the brain when explaining how a Feldenkrais lesson is able to facilitate changes by emphasizing curiosity and ease when learning. We discuss the benefits, such as improved physical mobility, enhanced thinking and emotional regulation. Our discussion also highlights how investigating our physical alignment can lead to greater self-awareness. We consider if there is a spiritual dimension to the Feldenkrais method, exploring its potential to enhance creative expression. Nick shares what challenges are posed by modern sedentary lifestyles and discusses how the method can address these issues. We also consider how posture may be passed down through ancestry not only by genetic inheritance (nature) but also via mirror neurons (nurture). As we look to the future of the Feldenkrais Method, Nick introduces the Feldenkrais Project, his pioneering initiative designed to broaden accessibility and engagement worldwide. Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned practitioner, this episode is a testament to the transformative power of the Feldenkrais Method, offering insights for anyone seeking to understand this seminal approach to somatic therapy. The Feldenkrais Project, a crowd-funded labor of love offering Feldenkrais study at no charge to thousands of monthly listeners all around the world.
This inspirational episode promises insights into living a more present, aware, and connected life. Russell Delman, co-developer of The Embodied Life - a transformative approach to human potential, joins us to reveal how to reclaim your personal power by taking responsibility for your internal state, rather than blaming emotional imbalances on other people and the world at large. Russell presents the critical role of embodiment in informing both our healing process and spiritual development, proposing a seismic shift from Western psychology's focus on individuality to recognizing our profound interconnectedness with everything around us. We examine the evolution of spiritual practices as vehicles for genuine healing and Russell's personal story, highlighting his integration of Zen meditation, Gestalt therapy, yoga and the Feldenkrais method. Russell shares a fascinating overview of Moshé Feldenkrais's life with highlights including engineering, unarmed combat, Judo, the genius of the brain and even nuclear secrets during World War II. He also explains how we are subtly informed by a culture of dissatisfaction, and how certain methods of learning lead to implicit self-acceptance for who we are. We discuss how emotions have both a story and a sensation and how crucial it is to become aware of the various layers of our emotional experiences in healing. Finally, we tackle the art of mastering authentic communication - a necessity for meaningful interactions in our increasingly complex world. Russell offers insights on how to navigate challenging conversations with grace, using presence and self-awareness as tools for understanding. This episode isn't just a conversation; it's an invitation to a more intentional and connected way of being.Russell's exploration of body/mind perspectives and human potential began while studying psychology at university, sparking a lifelong commitment to awareness. He deepened his understanding through workshops at the Esalen Institute, traveling in the jungles of South America and trainings in Zen meditation and yoga. He has extensively studied Gestalt therapy under Dr. Robert Hall and trained in the Feldenkrais Method with founder Moshé Feldenkrais. His relationship and study with Eugene Gendlin, the founder of the Focusing technique, was also of great significance. Russell was one of the first teachers chosen to lead Feldenkrais Professional Training Programs - he has taught in over 50 international programs, helping to train over 2500 Feldenkrais teachers internationally. Central to Russell's life are his nearly 50 years of marriage with Linda, co-developer of The Embodied Life, and their journey as parents to their daughter, Liliana.theembodiedlife.orgLiked what you heard? Anna Bezuglova transforms the mundane into sacred practice, challenging our perceptions of daily life and movement with insights from her unique journey and teaching philosophy. "The dialogue of sacredness of deep meaning is something that is often connected to daily things. It's not only the physical practice that I treat in such a way but also just daily moments and living life. Being present to it all the time— and it doesn't matter whether I'm doing an official session of practice, or I'm driving a car, or I'm talking to my husband, or I'm teaching a class, or I'm just walking down the road. I think this mindset shifts something in the way you do things day to day." ~ Anna Bezuglova, 3:00 In a deeply reflective conversation, Anna describes how she treats daily practices as sacred, a wisdom imparted by her Zen teacher. She shares her journey of recognizing the sacredness in her routines, initially performing practices that outwardly seemed sacred to others but later realizing their intrinsic value to herself. Anna emphasizes the importance of being present in every moment, whether it's in a structured practice session or the simple acts of daily living, highlighting how this mindset transforms the mundane into something deeply meaningful. Anna's reflections extend into the lessons learned from her father, a martial arts teacher and a Buddhist, who, despite never directly teaching her martial arts, deeply influenced her perspective on life and practice. She recounts growing up in the challenging times of the 1990s in Russia, drawing resilience and a unique outlook from her parents' examples. This background informs her teaching philosophy, where she advocates for a holistic approach to movement that intertwines physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects. Anna argues for the significance of continuous change, consistency, and awareness in practice, underlining how these elements contribute to a fulfilling and transformative journey. Through her narrative, she challenges listeners to see movement not just as physical exercise, but as a comprehensive method to engage with life, fostering change, and personal growth. Takeaways The sacredness of daily practice — a reflection on how integrating conscious intention into routine activities transforms them into meaningful practices. The influence of upbringing — discussing how parental examples, especially in the face of adversity, shape resilience and perspectives on life and practice. The importance of awareness — highlighting how paying attention to the body's movement and presence in space can significantly improve one's practice and overall well-being. The role of a teacher — the necessity of embodying the principles one teaches, as coherence between words and actions fosters trust and facilitates learning. The power of coordination — explaining how developing coordination through movement practices can enhance the ability to adapt and succeed in various aspects of life. The commitment to long-term learning — advocating for the importance of dedication and persistence in practice to experience genuine transformation. The weMove podcast is getting in to the Nervous System, what it is, what it does for us and how we can relearn how we communicate with it to take us from a place of fight, flight, freeze, fawn to a more regulated alert and healthy state giving us back the power to experience life and movement. We have heard the phrase Nervous System many times and trauma equally as much. The last few years the word trauma has become increasingly used and focussed on. However we have felt being stuck in this place of trauma contemplation was not the place to be, nor was covering our past with experiences that took us away from what we were feeling, be that ice baths, breathing practices, daily training, ointments and potions. None of which are wrong but our bodies tell us what the problem is through these sensations that if we numb them, we cannot feel. And if we cannot feel, then we cannot heal. Our guest @irenelyon Irene Lyon, MSC. and nervous system expert, teaches people around the world how to work with the nervous system to transform trauma, heal body and mind, and live full, creative lives. To date, her online programs and classes have reached over 9,500 people in over 90 countries. Irene has a Master's Degree in Biomedical and Health Science and also has a knack for making complex info easy for all of us to understand and apply to our lives. She has extensively studied and practices the works of Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais, Peter Levine (founder of Somatic Experiencing) and Kathy Kain (founder of Somatic Practice). Irene spends her free time eating delicious food, hiking in the mountains or walking along the Pacific Ocean in her hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Delving into the nuanced landscape of trauma, this talk redefines its contours. Beyond the apparent shockwaves of accidents or abuse, the lens of somatic experiencing unveils trauma as an entity residing within physiology, spanning tissues, nerves, and interactions. The ebb and flow of trauma's grip unfolds as dysregulation within one's system. Manifesting either as rigid fixity or graceful flow, this analogy likens it to a dam obstructing water's natural course.Peeling back the layers of identity, the interplay between personality and individuality emerges. Molded by adaptive responses to societal norms, authentic individuality can languish in the shadows. Yet, some craft safeguarding personalities – a guise concealing pain, as seen in comedians wielding humor as armor. Unlocking healing's door, the crux lies in fostering incremental capacity. Analogous to mastering a new skill or language, the journey entails nurturing the ability to navigate emotions, sensations, and responses. Nervous system regulation transcends mere emotional release. It's a symphony of physiological cues – trembles, tears – incrementally knitting the tapestry of healing and resilience. --- This session was recorded as part of the "Holistic Psychotherapy Summit" in January 2023. How the Anat Baniel Method Harnesses Neuromovement for Lifelong Vitality Do you believe that you're hardwired to behave and think in certain ways and that it's impossible to change? Research into neuroplasticity tells us this isn't so; that we can change the brain, improve performance, health and vitality in simple ways. Anat Baniel's work and her NeuroMovement Treatments corroborate this. Join us for this chat about her work, how she helps special kids and top athletes, and the nine essentials that can change your life. Listen now! Takeaways: We tend to think of the brain being hardwired and unchangeable in some ways, and feel that we do things the way we do them because of this. Anat Baniel's NeuroMovement Treatments suggest otherwise. According to Anat, movement is the key to positive brain change. She carries forward and builds upon the work of her mentor Moshé Feldenkrais who is famous for the Feldenkrais Method. Doing things differently from the way that we always have done them gives the brain new information and makes it change. This helps us learn new skills and refine and enhance the abilities that we have. Anat has helped children with special needs, as well as top athletes and professional dancers by simple movement training. By making the brain think and function in new ways, it is possible to physically change the brain. In her book Move Into Life: The Nine Essentials for Lifelong Vitality, Anat Baniel speaks about nine ways to improve health and enhance life. She speaks about the importance of mindfulness, slowing down, movement variation and more in the book.
