The weMove podcast is getting in to the Nervous System, what it is, what it does for us and how we can relearn how we communicate with it to take us from a place of fight, flight, freeze, fawn to a more regulated alert and healthy state giving us back the power to experience life and movement.  We have heard the phrase Nervous System many times and trauma equally as much. The last few years the word trauma has become increasingly used and focussed on. However we have felt being stuck in this place of trauma contemplation was not the place to be, nor was covering our past with experiences that took us away from what we were feeling, be that ice baths, breathing practices, daily training, ointments and potions. None of which are wrong but our bodies tell us what the problem is through these sensations that if we numb them, we cannot feel. And if we cannot feel, then we cannot heal.   Our guest @irenelyon Irene Lyon, MSC. and nervous system expert, teaches people around the world how to work with the nervous system to transform trauma, heal body and mind, and live full, creative lives. To date, her online programs and classes have reached over 9,500 people in over 90 countries. Delving into the nuanced landscape of trauma, this talk redefines its contours. Beyond the apparent shockwaves of accidents or abuse, the lens of somatic experiencing unveils trauma as an entity residing within physiology, spanning tissues, nerves, and interactions. The ebb and flow of trauma's grip unfolds as dysregulation within one's system. Manifesting either as rigid fixity or graceful flow, this analogy likens it to a dam obstructing water's natural course.Peeling back the layers of identity, the interplay between personality and individuality emerges. Molded by adaptive responses to societal norms, authentic individuality can languish in the shadows. Yet, some craft safeguarding personalities – a guise concealing pain, as seen in comedians wielding humor as armor. Unlocking healing's door, the crux lies in fostering incremental capacity. Analogous to mastering a new skill or language, the journey entails nurturing the ability to navigate emotions, sensations, and responses. Nervous system regulation transcends mere emotional release. It's a symphony of physiological cues – trembles, tears – incrementally knitting the tapestry of healing and resilience. --- This session was recorded as part of the "Holistic Psychotherapy Summit" in January 2023. Dr. Chris Lawrence is a mom, partner, knitter, camper, hiker, licensed clinical psychologist and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis on children and families. She has extensive experience working with children, adolescents and adults. Her training in Psychology focused on “mental illness”, “diagnosis” and “cognitive treatment” for all manner of symptoms. However, in 2016 Chris began studying somatic interventions for anxiety, trauma and depression. From the beginning of training, she recognized that she had been looking for a very different perspective than she was originally taught. She leans into the belief that mental health and “dis-ease” are the result of context, environment and culture. She now looks at symptoms as expressions of distress that are a result of an environment that feels unsafe. These environments can be prenatal, familial, neighborhood, work or societal. Unsafe environments may lead to nervous system dysregulation that results in overwhelm or shut down – resulting in what we know as “symptoms”. Treating these “symptoms” involves a reorientation towards our resources - nature, pets, supportive others, movement, to name just a few, and a slow unwinding of our nervous system to allow it to return to our natural state. She has also trained with Kathy Kain and Dr. Stephen Terrell to use therapeutic touch in the treatment of developmental trauma. Dr. Lawrence is an ongoing learner in the area of nervous system regulation, resilience, and the impact of traumatic stress on our bodies. Her newest passion is helping parents and babies work through birth trauma. She founded Chris Lawrence & Associates, LLC (formerly Lawrence, Oliver and Associates, LLC) – a mental health private practice that employs over 20 clinicians. She works directly with clients and provides supervision to students and developing clinicians. She is also the founder and Director of HeartSpace Clinic, a nonprofit organization that offers a wide variety of services focused on building resilience in the face of traumatic stress through interventions that target the nervous system, including the Safe and Sound Protocol developed by Stephen Porges. She offers workshops and training on these topics to a wide variety of groups and organizations. Dr. Lawrence regulates her own nervous system by spending as much time as possible camping and hiking with her partner, knitting, practicing Pilates and cuddling with her chiweenie Ruby.  Connect with Chris and Learn more about  The HeartSpace clinic below:http://www.heartspaceclinic.orgemail: heartspacecliniccomo@gmail.com

Understanding the why, where and how of embedded social interactions helps us with compassion. There is a spectrum of stress in our lives.  Not all of it is negative.  The more we know about it, the better able we are to respond to it in ourselves and relate to it others. In this episode, Irene Lyon breaks down not just the fundamentals of the nervous system but just how fundamental healing your nervous system is. It's where we deepen our connection to ourselves and our environment. You'll learn about how the nervous system is set in early childhood and how that forms the foundation for how we interact with the world. We dive into how we can harness neuroplasticity and the same regeneration and resiliency we see in nature to begin to shift the way our nervous system is regulated. As chronic health conditions and depression are on the rise, Irene looks at something that may be at the root of the matter - the state of our nervous systems. It may not be a quick fix, and we cover all the myths around the hacks and quick fixes that dominate the wellness sphere these days, and the truth that healing the nervous system is about building devotion to your body for the long haul. Irene shares her own story of how injuries and childhood experiences shaped her journey and how weaving together her work in the personal training and fitness world, somatic experiencing, and nervous system training with some of the world's foremost practitioners - Peter Levine and Kathy Kain - led her to create a whole library of education and courses for healing your nervous system. We also explore how healing the nervous system isn't just about the individual, but also about the next generation. We also talk about: Is the vagus nerve overhyped? In this episode, Edward Dangerfield and I do a deep dive on a new modality of breathwork, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Facilitated Breath Repatterning ~ or FBR for short ~ will be globally recognised in 4-5 years' time and that the research that is beginning here in Bali will go on to make some significant discoveries about the connection between breathing patterns + patterns of behaviour. As you'll hear in this conversation, what I believe is truly unique about this mode of breathwork ~ is that it is both scientific in its approach, involving the practitioner 'reading the breath' of the client, and then making facilitations that often elicit profound shifts. I'll also add that my capacity to hold myself through intense experiences and feel comfortable expressing emotions has been transformed by this work. Since recording the initial conversation with Ed (link) I completed a 400hr training with him and the team here in Bali. All too often we focus on what's wrong and trying to find "the answers" to fix everything. Instead, Nicole's work is based on emphasizing that you are already whole. Her practice is largely influenced by the work of Kathy Kain, Peter Levine, Moshe Feldenkrais, and Chris Dierkes. As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner®️, Feldenkrais Practitioner®️, and yoga teacher, her knowledge of the body, mind, and soul greatly influences how she supports others from a very intuitive, energetic, and somatic place. As someone who both values and sees self-exploration, healing, and spiritual practice as being vital for transformation, her intention is to support others in gaining greater access to the pieces that are blocking them from feeling more alive and whole. Time in nature, connection with friends and family, and movement of all kinds are important to her and you'll often find her out on walks with her dog, surfing, mountain biking, SUP'ing, and enjoying people's company, usually accompanied by delicious food! Golden Nuggets From This Episode: ✨ “Nervous System is the communication between our brain and our body and our body and our brain.” ✨ “The job of the autonomic nervous system is to really give messages to the brain and the body around "Am I safe" or "Do I need to respond to danger".” ✨ “Sometimes we're looking for a more complicated answers on what to do, but it's pretty amazing just pause and be with your experience.” ✨ “Our emotions, our experiences are all just energy in motion, so when we learn to pause and support and hold what is we've actually healed a layer or an aspect of our trauma that's causing us to respond and be triggered by these certain situations.” ✨ “There is nothing to fix and you're already whole.” ✨ “Not every tool needs to work for you.” ✨ “It is important to recognize that trauma isn't about the event, trauma is about how we didn't get to complete our response to the event.” ✨ “Shut down happens when everything becomes too much. We freeze, we put the brakes on everything and we don't feel any of that fight flee energy or that alert energy.” ✨ “Survival patterns are ways to protect ourselves from experiencing the trauma.” ✨ “The more we untangle the ways we've learned to survive through our patterns, and the ways we're stuck in our response cycle, the more we can access who we really are.” ✨ “We are designed to be in the community. We are designed to experience a sense of belonging, togetherness, unity, and working as a team to contribute, evolve, and move through this life as a human. ” ✨ “Trauma causes a disconnect from self and from others.” ✨ “The more we can recognize what it feels like to be held in the space of "I'm here with you", "I see you". The more we can experience that from other people, the more we can also hold that for other people. The more intern we all benefit from. I really believe that the world will be such a different place if we all knew how to just drop into "I'm here with you, I see you" Connect with Nicole: Website: https://www.nicolelohse.com/resources Free Offer: Join Open for 30 days free with my code: HEARTSNUGGLES ~ Your ritual starts now. "Homeostasis is the ability that your body has to return to normal after an accident. Wounds heal, blood resumes flowing, illness passes. Self-regulation can be seen as a form of resilience, since it's the emotional ability to return to equilibrium after a disruption. For individuals growing up under chronic stress or pervasive trauma, their ‘normal equilibrium' is different from the average. They tend towards more disorganization and lack of emotional stability. It takes tremendous effort - psychologically and physiologically - to manage their lack of stability. In other words, their capacity for self-regulation is inhibited. We can presume this in turn decreases their resilience." ---Kathy Kain

She gets very specific about what interventions work and don’t work, and the kind of patients that may benefit or be underserved when the medium of contact is screen-only. And Kathy gives in-depth analysis of the interplay of awareness and points of contact in somatic interventions; regardless of whether the clinician has physical contact with a patient or not. We also take a deep dive into the role of intersubjectivity in somatic work—the importance of viewing the patient as the expert, and how to skillfully navigate somatic counter-transference while keeping in mind the patient’s benefit and maintenance of therapeutic and relational connection. This episode is appropriate for both somatic practitioners as well as novices who may be interested in the mechanics of this work, particularly in the psychotherapeutic process. “How much can I feel?”  When we experience trauma, whether shock trauma (too much too fast) or developmental trauma (too little too long), it is common to disassociate. The healing process begins with reconnecting to the body and courageously experiencing all that we reject and hold inside. Tina Nance, a yin yoga and yoga therapy teacher in Bali, is a true master of the art of cultivating interoception (the internal felt sense of the body) and meeting her edge with mindfulness and compassion. Two years ago I trained as a yin yoga teacher with Tina at Yoga Barn in Ubud and it is an honor to share her wisdom with you today.  Our wide-ranging conversation on healing trauma weaves through Tina’s journey and my own. We talk through attachment theory, PTSD, yin yoga, Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and above all radical compassion. Along the way we explore yin and yang, a mystical perspective on menstruation, and a menagerie of wisdom teachers. Finally we rest with how personal healing leads to service and how we can work with trauma during a time of global isolation.  A student of Yin Yoga founder Sara Powers, Tina Nance has been teaching yoga and women's work globally since 2001. Tina’s current focus is embodied somatic trauma integration. She teaches in Ubud, Bali. They say you have to feel it to heal it, but with the right embodiment practices, the healing journey can be a sacred and joyful dance. Happy New Year! I am very excited to launch GG Season Two by dialoging with Alaine Duncan, Doctor of Chinese Medicine. Alaine has invented a truly unique approach to trauma-informed acupuncture which integrates the neurobiology of traumatic stress, Somatic Experiencing skills and Daoist Five Element theory. Her new book, The Tao of Trauma, co-authored with Kathy Kain, views trauma through this ancient-modern integrative lens and lays out practical strategies for treating common co-morbidities of traumatic stress such as; chronic pain, autoimmune illness, insomnia, metabolic problems, and mental health disorders. For over 10 years Alaine Duncan served as a clinician and researcher on the complementary medicine team at the Washington, DC VA Medical Center, treating war veterans suffering with combat PTSD and complex PTSD. Our shared clinical history of treating active military and war veterans makes this dialogue both practical and visionary. Alaine uses clinical examples to describe Daoist Five Element theory and its correlation with somatic psychotherapy techniques. The Tao of Trauma is a boon for TCM and acupuncture professionals, somatic psychotherapists and body-centered healers who treat traumatic stress and PTSD. In this episode of The Dr. Hedberg Show I interview therapist Patti Elledge in a deep discussion about healing adverse childhood experiences (ACE's), trauma, epigenetics, attachment theory, somatic experiencing, evolutionary biology, and much more. Patti Elledge has specialized in therapeutic application of neuroscience for more than 40 years. She has a broad clinical background in developmental and attachment based traumas and worked directly with babies, children and families for more than 25 years prior to her SE training in the late 90s. She specializes in interpersonal neurobiology and how that affects social/emotional, language/cognition and sensory processing development. Her blending of somatic and body-mind techniques helps resolve over-coupled elements of the fight-flight-freeze that seemingly becomes intractable with the essence of loving/bonding and "belonging." By accessing these parts of the nervous system we can return to healthy regulation and functioning, greater flow and creativity. Patti studied directly with Drs. Peter Levine, Raja Selvam and Diane Poole Heller and holds Trauma Informed Touch Certification from Kathy Kain.  She serves as Faculty for Diane's seminal trainings for healing adult attachment wounds, called DARe.  Patti has an active private practice in Asheville, NC where she provides therapy as well as mentoring to other somatic practitioners learning SE and DARe. To contact Patti call (828) 273-0323 or email at patelledge@hotmail.com Here is a transcript of the interview: Dr. Hedberg: Well, welcome, everyone to "The Dr. Hedberg Show." This is Dr. Hedberg and I'm excited today to have Pattie Elledge on the show. We're gonna be talking a lot about adverse childhood experiences and trauma and we're gonna get into the things that she does in her practice. And as you know, I've been talking a lot, writing a lot recently about ACEs and what those mean. We're gonna get into that in some detail here. So, Pattie, welcome to the show. Pattie: Oh, thank you so much, Dr. Hedberg. I'm really glad to be visiting with you today on this topic. Dr. Hedberg: Yeah, thanks for joining us. So why don't we start by you just telling us a little bit about what you specialize in and your background and the types of people you've worked with over your career? Pattie: Well, thank you. I've been a therapist for 40 years. Ad I started out, I always like to say, I started out really working with babies and children, moms and dads many, many years ago in a whole different field. But I learned so much working with those kids, you know, day after day, hour after hour, I worked with a lot of indigenous kids and indigent families, families that needed social services and I got to see a wide spectrum, that was when I was working in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but I got to work with a wide spectrum of population. And then I worked a lot with families later on that were, you know, had a lot of affluence and a lot of wealth. And so I got to see kind of what happens in the good, the bad, and the ugly early on in families and the perspective of really helping families understand the child that they had. And then later in my career, I was introduced to Peter Levine's work and I just really turned in that direction. Peter's known, has been a very influential individual in the field of trauma healing. And Peter introduced the concept that trauma is stored in the nervous system and not in the story. So that in other words, talk therapy really wasn't touching it for healing for many people. And so Peter began publishing and writing and created a format called "Somatic Experiencing." That's a therapy strategy which I'm certified in and have assisted, oh, probably 40 or 50 trainings nationally and internationally for these wonderful three-year-long trainings. And so I really consider myself a trauma healing specialist really in the field of neuroscience and neurobiology.

This week I am bringing in Irene Lyon to talk about working with trauma. A little bit about Irene, she is a nervous system specialist and therapeutic coach who helps everyone — from the mom next door to the next big thought leaders — transform their bodies, businesses, relationships and lives through regulating their nervous systems. Irene has intensively studied and practices the work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, Peter Levine (founder of Somatic Experiencing) and Kathy Kain (founder of Somatic Practice). Irene has a master’s degree in research in the fields of biomedical and health science. She regularly appears on podcasts and online summits teaching all things nervous system health, healing trauma and neuroplasticity. In this episode we cover what got her working in the field of trauma, and then dive into the subject of procedural memory. I was fascinated by the mechanics of procedural memory and ever since that conversation I have been paying attention to how it might play into my life and the lives of my clients. She also talks about the fight, flight, or freeze response. And we learn about the ACE study, which stands for Adverse Childhood Experiences, and the implications from that body of work. Here are some resources she mentioned: 1) Dr. Mate's first book,When The Body Says No - Understanding The Stress-Disease Connection 2) Dr. Mate's website https://drgabormate.com/ 3) The Need For Authenticity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUGGNPAK6uw 4) https://soundcloud.com/irenelyon/origins-of-the-ace-study 5) https://www.ted.com/talks/nadine_burke_harris_how_childhood_trauma_affects_health_across_a_lifetime

Play Episode 84 Here When we're stressed we think less. That's true for everyone but it's an especially vexing fact for our distressed clients – many of whom desperately need to make more helpful and healthful decisions on behalf of their well-being. Milton Erickson, the famous psychiatrist and hypnotherapist, knew this too. That's why he maintained a list to reference when his body got racked by pain due to his history with polio. I often tell clients about Milton's list (and my own) and why it may be a good idea for them to create something similar for times when they're "freaking." Episode Mentions: Milton Ericsson - WikipediaMilton H. Erickson M.D.: An American Healer - Amazon - non-affiliated linkKathy Kain - Somatic Experiencing® FacultyStephen Gilligan - Trance Camp When I'm introducing this idea of "Milton's List" to clients I'm first trying to get it across that: We think less when we're stressed so it's a good idea to have an aid to help us re-direct our attention toward more helpful ends.Other people have needed similar lists and have been willing to use them (such as Milton Erickson and Twig).Repetitive distress is rarely productive and usually deliterious. Working on our behalf to minimize it's consequences is a smart thing to do.Each of us has a pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that we do when we're "freaking out." Our goal is to name some of those steps so that when we see them coming we can turn our attention toward the list.No single aide or activity is going to be the answer every time. When I'm helping clients create their list I try to: Find resources or activities they've already discovered on their own that they know are helpful in calming things down. As in Kathy Kain's question: "When these things have happened before, what have you found that helps the most?"Help them think creatively about about other "resources" they have in their lives that they could lean on to help them minimize their repetitive activation.Increase the amount of social contact or "outside of me" attention that can be engaged.Encourage the use of somatic and physiologically informed activities that can be anticipated to help calm things down such as: * Orientation – Engage the world around you rather than reference "in you" too much.  * Simulated Pendulation – Probably in the 3x3 pattern of "Naming 3 things you can see around you, name 3 things you can feel inside, name 3 other things you can see." Repeat. * The Hook – Brain Gym move where you tangle your hands, arms and legs across the midline of the body and press the tongue to the roof of the mouth. * Sometimes breathing excercises, though rarely do I include this. * Grounding excercises in rounds – Like standing in a doorway with the outside of the feet and hands pressing out to the doorjam. * Squeezing things in rounds – Like plastic water bottles or towels. * Ripping up Newspaper in rounds – The sound is so so satisfying. * And so on... Setting up easy access to this list can be necessary: Sometimes just talking about the idea of such a list is enough to give people something to lean on rather than focus all their attention on recurring anguish.Other times it's enough to actually make a list on a single piece of paper. For some, making copies of the list and posting it around the house, in the car and at the office is a better idea. The homescreen of a smartphone can be another handy place to have this list available for quick review.
