In Canada, Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs, often referred to as a "1%" Club, include infamous names like the Hells Angels, The Outlaws, Bandidos. The Hells Angels are reported to have over 450 chapters across almost 60 countries around the world – many of those are in Canada.According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the RCMP, Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, are involved in a range of illicit markets – fraud, counterfeiting, money laundering, extortion, corruption, drug trafficking, illicit firearms trafficking, violence and murder.According to the Global Organized Crime Index, Canada has very high levels of resilience to organized crime, with a score of 7.21 out of 10 – placing it 23rd globally.On the other side of the coin, Canada has low levels of criminality – with 3.88 out of 10 – sitting 160th out of 193 countries.The Criminal Actor score is 3.9 out of 10, BUT mafia style groups is the highest form of criminal actor at 5/10, and outlaw motorcycle gangs are the most widespread in Canada, with Nova Scotia of particular interest due to its port of entry for illegal drugs. In this episode, retired Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agent Jay Dobyns sits down with Giovanni and Dutch to share how he went from getting shot on his fourth day on the job to successfully infiltrating the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club under the alias Jaybird Davis, the gunrunner. Having previously worked on outlaw motorcycle club cases themselves, Giovanni and Dutch share their own insights into just how violent and dangerous these organizations can be. Dobyns also talks about his other cases, including a Las Vegas bombing that was stopped by law enforcement before it could unfold, exemplifying the importance of undercover work in keeping the public safe.   About Jay Dobyns: Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Jay Dobyns was a standout PAC 10, D-1 wide receiver turned Special Agent for the ATF in 1987 at 26 years old. He is best known for successfully infiltrating the Hells Angels. The investigation, known as Operation Black Biscuit, resulted in 52 defendants being arrested, 16 of whom were indicted on racketeering and murder charges. However, most of the serious violations were eventually dismissed and Dobyns' personal information became public, exposing him and his family to intimidation, threats and bounties on his life.   Produced by The Mob Museum. It's an impressive site - a beautiful, sunny day on the highway with a large group of motorcycle enthusiasts riding in formation - adult men and women enjoying the freedom of the road on their two or three-wheeler bikes. Many of these motorcycle clubs are African American with chapters nationwide. In Hampton Roads, clubs include Buffalo Soldiers, 7 Cities O'mens MC, Chesapeake Riders, Afro Dogs, and ThundernLightening Motorcycle Club to name a few. Our conversation this week is with Tom Lix — founder & CEO of Cleveland Whiskey — on pushing the boundaries of convention while building on tradition to artfully blend science with craft to create unique award-winning Whiskey.Tom is a serial entrepreneur — prior to founding Cleveland Whiskey, he founded Public Interactive which he sold to National Public Radio, he served as President/COO of Yankelovich Partners, and as you'll hear later, Tom has always been a tinkerer through and through.Lix spent some formative years in the US Navy where in addition to some early bootleg distilling; he was cross-trained in nuclear physics and thermodynamics along with seawater/freshwater distillation. A college dropout who hitchhiked across the country fought forest fires in Alaska at the age of 17, and founded the first University-sponsored Motorcycle Club in America. He later earned his Doctorate in Business from Boston University.Originally published as episode #21 back in April of 2021, this conversation with Tom Lix is one of my personal favorites! Tom is a deep eloquent orator, with an eclectic entrepreneurial background, and is one of the best and most engaging storytellers I know, making for one of the most entertaining conversations so far!
