Show #870 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 18th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. BMW iNext Will Be Available In Three Versions "BMW knows it needs to get the production version of the iNext (possibly called iX) right because it will face some stiff electric SUV competition. So it needs to look good, be technologically advanced, have good range and charging capacity, as well as outright performance." says InsideEVs: " the entry level iNext will have 308 horsepower, the mid-range model will have 522 horsepower and the top of the range model will get 610 horsepower. All, even the base model, will come with a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup, although their level of performance will vary quite drastically (the most powerful version is nearly twice as powerful as the entry level model). We still don’t know the exact reveal date for the production model (and its official production name), but BMW has confirmed that series production will commence in July 2021 and it will go on sale in Europe shortly thereafter; the U.S. market will reportedly have to wait one additional year." https://insideevs.com/news/439432/bmw-inext-ix-610-horsepower/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles Volvo XC40 diesel models pulled from sale "Volvo has removed all diesel versions of its XC40 from sale in the UK as it moves away from the fuel in favour of electrified variants" reports Autocar: "A Volvo UK spokesman claimed the decision “is part of Volvo Cars’ ambitious global electrification strategy, which includes our well-established commitment to the phasing out of diesel in the long term. It also reflects the strong shift in customer demand towards petrol and electrified models.”. available are two Recharge models: a plug-in hybrid (from £39,130) and the electric P8. The latter is available in First Edition form from £59,985, with cheaper variants due later. Models such as the next-generation XC90 seven-seat SUV will ditch diesel in favour of hybrid and electric variants, Volvo has confirmed." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volvo-xc40-diesel-models-pulled-sale Elon Musk Says Tesla Is Developing a "Beast" Neural Network Training Computer "Elon Musk took to Twitter on Friday to share a new development in Tesla. He revealed that the firm is developing a Neural Network training computer called “Dojo" that will be a "beast."" says Interesting Engineering: "A follower asked the CEO what will be the next big public release that shows a massive leap in Autopilot Full-Self Driving (FSD). Musk responded that the FSD improvement will come as a "quantum leap." “The FSD improvement will come as a quantum leap, because it’s a fundamental architectural rewrite, not an incremental tweak. I drive the bleeding edge alpha build in my car personally. Almost at zero interventions between home & work. Limited public release in 6 to 10 weeks," said Musk. Musk added that going from 2D to 4D would be a giant improvement. The new system will interpret things like traffic lights, stops, turns, and changes in acceleration in a video setting." https://interestingengineering.com/elon-musk-says-tesla-is-developing-a-beast-neural-network-training-computer Tesla two-factor authentication ‘embarrassingly late’ "Elon Musk tweeted Friday that two-factor authentication for its app is “embarrassingly late” but apparently is now on the way. Musk didn’t provide a timeline, but said on Twitter that two-factor authentication — which adds an additional step to verify a user’s identity at sign-in— is in “final validation.”" says The Verge: "Tesla’s 2FA will be available via SMS and authenticator apps, which are generally considered more secure." https://www.theverge.com/2020/8/15/21370140/musk-tesla-2fa-security-cars Tesla gets approval for next construction phase for Giga Berlin "Tesla has received approval to begin the next phase of construction at the site of Giga Berlin. On August 17, the Brandenburg State Office for the Environment approved the early start of Tesla’s next construction phase for its European production facility. Construction crews on the site can now begin driving piles as a part of the continuing foundational work." reports JOey for Teslarati: "The main issue that arose from the request was the protection of groundwater at the Giga Berlin property site. Refueling the non-mobile pile drivers that Tesla’s crews need to use for the next phase was the primary concern for those who complained. The fueling process could lead to chemicals being spilled on the ground and contaminating the groundwater in the area. The required protective material will eliminate the possibility of polluting the water located at the Giga Berlin landmass. Additionally, more requirements will be made that will ensure local roads and railways are not damaged from the vibrations that will naturally occur from the piledriving process" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-approval-giga-berlin-next-construction-phase/ Tesla breaks ground on world’s largest battery storage facility "Tesla, a world-renown electric automobile manufacturer along with PG&E recently began the construction of the world’s largest battery storage facility that will be located in Moss Landing (Monterey), California. The energy storage unit will be able to dispatch up to 730-megawatt hours (MWh) of energy to the electrical grid at a maximum rate of 182.5 MW for up to four hours using 256 of Tesla’s lithium-ion (Li-ion) Megapacks. Tesla and PG&E will have the option to upgrade Moss Landing’s capacity to bring the system up to 1.2-gigawatt-hours which could, according to Tesla’s report, power every home in the state of San Francisco for a quarter of the day." says Construction Review Online: "The battery storage facility will be launched in 2021 and will be designed, constructed, and maintained under both Tesla and PG&E. The construction of the Moss Landing site and other such mega-storage projects around the world shows us that there is a massive shift away from hydrocarbon-based power systems towards renewable generation backed up by utility-scale storage." https://constructionreviewonline.com/2020/08/tesla-breaks-ground-on-worlds-largest-battery-storage-facility/ RAC launches EV warranty to boost consumer confidence "Assurant, the RAC’s partner in the aftersales sector, has launched EV One, a warranty product available to all of the network’s 1,500 dealers. It can be applied to any used EV or hybrid – both plug-in and series – up to a maximum of eight years old and with 80,000 miles on the clock at the time of purchase." according to MotorTrader.com: "Cover can be for a variety of periods up to 24 months, and claims can be made at the supplying dealer or almost any other, up to a limit of the vehicle purchase price." Sean Kent, RAC director of sales at Assurant, said: “This is a very timely development with EVs and hybrids – especially plug-ins – starting to appear on the used market in larger numbers and, for the first time really, outside of franchise dealer networks. There is massive public interest in these vehicles but used car customers tend to be quite conservative in their buying choices. The new warranty, which provides the most comprehensive level of cover we have yet offered, is designed to deliver the peace of mind needed for them to feel comfortable with moving away from petrol and diesel power. As demand for EV and hybrids grows, car buyers are going to expect dealers to provide them as part of their stock mix, and the new warranty provides a cornerstone for new sales propositions for these kinds of vehicles." https://www.motortrader.com/motor-trader-news/automotive-news/rac-launches-ev-warranty-boost-consumer-confidence-18-08-2020 CATL aims to boost EV range with battery cells installed in vehicle frames "Chinese battery maker CATL is looking to boost the range of electric cars by packing batteries into vehicle frames, according to a Reuters report published Wednesday. Distributing battery cells throughout a car allows for more total cells, increasing energy-storage capacity and thus range. This will allow future electric cars to achieve a 500-mile range, CATL chairman Zeng Yuqun said at an industry conference in Wuhan, China" says Green Car Reports: "In 2018, Swedish researchers said they were looking at making the entire vehicle body the battery—encased in carbon fiber. Prior to that, Volvo experimented with storing energy in body panels, using a composite material made from carbon fiber. But barriers remain. Safety is one. Placing the battery in the middle of the vehicle, mostly away from crush zones, in a centralized pack, has helped make it more predictable for first responders in crashes." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129239_report-catl-aims-to-boost-ev-range-with-battery-cells-installed-in-vehicle-frames Renault Twingo ZE gets official WLTP ratings "Now that the Renault Twingo ZE appears at Renault’s German and French websites, we have the official WLTP ratings. There’s good and bad news…" reports Pedro for PushEVs: "he bad news is that Renault’s on-board charger is still very inefficient at low currents. Charging at 10 amps has an efficiency of roughly 70 percent. To have a decent charging efficiency the current should be at least 16 amps, with 32 amps being recommended. Have this in mind when you choose an EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) if you have an electric car made by Renault. The good news is that the WLTP range is higher than was previously estimated by Renault. The WLTP city range is increased from 250 to 270 km and the WLTP combined range is increased from 180 to 190 km. (118 miles) from 22kWh battery. SEAT Mii electric. WLTP combined range: 161 miles. Total battery capacity: 36,8 kWh. Unfortunately the Renault Twingo ZE and the VW electric triplets are only considered as backup plans by their makers. They are the electric cars that Renault and Volkswagen will eventually try to sell only if the sales of the more profitable ZOE and ID.3 aren’t enough to meet EU emissions targets…" https://pushevs.com/2020/08/14/renault-twingo-ze-gets-official-wltp-ratings/ Kia Niro EV = New #1 EV In The Netherlands "Overall, 5,685 plugin vehicles were sold in July, a new year best, pulling the YTD tally back into positive numbers (+15% YoY), thanks to over 25,000 registrations." says Clean Technica: "The Kia Niro EV won last month’s trophy, beating its personal best on the way with a record score of 644 deliveries. In 2nd place we have a surprise — the MG ZS EV won silver, thanks to a year best score of 501 units. In 3rd we also have a kind of surprise, with the VW e-Golf scoring 488 units, a new year best and an amazing performance for a model said to have just a couple more months to live." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/08/16/kia-niro-ev-new-1-ev-in-netherlands/ You can listen to all 869 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #861 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 7th August 2020. Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER TODD OAKES Welcome to new PARTNER DARIN AND SUZANNA MCLESKEY – here’s a little about Darin and Suzanna: “Hey Martyn! I'm a real estate broker in and around "The Motor City". I put nearly 50k miles a year on my Model S, and own a 500e for running errands out of my downtown Detroit office. My office is blocks away from the GM Hamtramck plant set to build the Hummer Truck. I have 33 solar panels on my home, a Cybertruck on order, an electric riding mower for my rentals, and love all things sustainable and EV-related. With all of my driving and mowing, I really enjoy listening to your show and the way it's presented! As a relatively new father as well, I appreciate you taking your valuable time to benefit so many people across the globe!” From Morten Grove: "Hey Martyn, you've got a ship with right-hand drive Tesla Model 3 coming your way to Southampton. Arrival tomorrow." It left Zeebrugge on 4th August and arrives into Southampton at Midday. It's the Glovis Sun. CADILLAC LYRIQ ELECTRIC SUV REVEALED: 300-PLUS MILES OF RANGE, 33-INCH SCREEN "The Cadillac LYRIQ is the brand's first pure electric vehicle and the first of any GM product to use the new modular electric platform, powered by the company's Ultium long-range batteries. The LYRIQ's 100-kilowatt-hour battery provides it with 300 miles of range, though there's a slight caveat here. This figure is "Based on initial Cadillac testing. Official EPA estimates not yet available." However, by late 2022, the LYRIQ's project on-sale date, that range of 300 miles might seem too low." says InsideEVs: "At-home level 2 charging rates of up to 19 kilowatts are optionally available and DC fast-charging of more than 150 kilowatts is promised. The DC charging figure is not impressive, but we don't yet know it's charging curve or taper, so we won't draw any conclusions as to charging times just yet. LYRIQ will come in both a standard rear-wheel-drive configuration and a "performance" all-wheel-drive option. Visually, the LYRIQ wears the brand's new design language, which incorporates a unique "grille" with distinctive lighting elements, multiple vents within the bumper, and very slim, vertical headlights." Looks like the Dyson car. Model 3 door handles! Old fashioned gear shifter. GM said: "Ultium’s state-of-the-art NCMA (nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum) chemistry uses aluminum in the cathode to help reduce the need for rare-earth materials such as cobalt. In fact, GM engineers reduced the cobalt content by more than 70 percent, compared to current GM batteries. A 33-inch-diagonal advanced LED display artfully integrates a single, large screen that spans the viewing area for the driver and incorporates driver information details, infotainment controls and camera views. This new display has the highest pixel density available in the automotive industry today and can display over one billion colors, 64 times more than any other vehicle in the automotive industry, providing a stunning in-vehicle experience unlike anything seen before from Cadillac." Cadillac tonight revealed the first-ever 2023 #Lyriq, an all-electric crossover that will have more than 300 miles of range, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, GM’s SuperCruise hands-free driving system, remote self-parking, DC fast-charging, and a 33-inch curved screen. 19-speaker sound system, 33" curved LED display and more! Cadillac Lyriq Pricing Expected Under $75,000 2021 AUDI E-TRON GETS $8,800 PRICE CUT, PLUS MORE RANGE "The Audi E-Tron is getting a new and significantly cheaper entry point for the 2021 model year. Audi is introducing an entry-level Premium trim with a base price coming in $8,900 cheaper than last year’s base E-Tron. Now, the base E-Tron last year was the Premium Plus trim, so this is essentially a de-contented E-Tron that you’re getting for far cheaper than before (No Matrix-design LED headlights, heated and ventilated 12-way power front seats, four-way power lumbar for driver & passenger, heated rear seats, 3D Bang & Olufsen sound system, Audi phone box with wireless charging, glass optic and aluminum-look buttons, and the driver assistance package.)" says Autoblog: "That new base price? It’s $66,995, including the $1,095 destination charge. Since the destination charge is $100 more in 2021 than it was in 2020 ($995), that effectively makes the price cut $8,800 year-to-year. The official EPA rating has shot up from 204 miles to 222 miles thanks to a number of optimizations and software enhancements. For starters, Audi has increased the usable amount of the battery by almost 3 kWh up to 86.5 kWh. Could it be introduced in other markets? The official Tesla customer service Weibo account announced it yesterday." asks Electrek: "It sounds like new Tesla buyers in China can order wraps for their cars directly through Tesla’s delivery centers, and existing owners can do it through service centers. Tesla is starting with five large markets and more are to come in the coming weeks." The Weibo post says: "Tesla is more and more common on the road, and it is getting easier to recognize the wrong car at the charging station. How to make your Tesla different and stand out? Now the Tesla Delivery Center has launched the [Color Changed Car Wrap] product, which can make the vehicle cool! The first batch of online cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Suzhou, and other cities will be launched in mid-August! Many available colors, please contact your local delivery or service center!" https://electrek.co/2020/08/06/tesla-launches-car-wrap-service/ KEN BLOCK TO MAKE WORLD RX RETURN IN ELECTRIC FORD FIESTA "Ken Block will return to the World Rallycross Championship for the opening round of the 2020 season at Holjes in Sweden, racing an electric Ford Fiesta in the new Projekt E support category." says Motorsport.com: "The American will race a new Fiesta ERX built by Manfred Stohl’s STARD outfit, using the single-specification three-motor, four-wheel drive 450kW ‘revelution’ electric powertrain kit developed by Stohl’s concern that is mandated to be used in all cars in the series. STARD recently announced Ford Performance support for its Fiesta ERX customer racing programme, and on Wednesday revealed a tie-up with Citroen Racing to deliver electric versions of the C3 R5 to customers to compete in Projekt E." https://www.motorsport.com/world-rx/news/ken-block-world-rx-ford-fiesta/4850193/?ic_source=home-page-widget&ic_medium=widget&ic_campaign=widget-12 WHAT CAR? The deployment of smart charging systems is being supported by an $838,000 grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, recognising the ability to minimise costs for drivers while supporting the reliability of the electricity system will both facilitate greater uptake of electric vehicle models." https://thedriven.io/2020/08/07/origin-rolls-out-150-ev-smart-chargers-to-customers-in-trial-of-future-grid/ KIA ADDS SUPPLY OF E-NIRO AND SOUL MODEL TO UK "Kia has boosted the UK supply of its popular e-Niro and Soul EV electric crossovers to meet “intense demand” and reduce waiting times. The Korean brand yesterday announced that last month was its best July on record in terms of UK sales, having shifted 28% more units than in the same period last year. " writes Autocar: "Around 800-900 e-Niros are now on their way to UK dealerships, in addition to the approximately 7000 units sold so far this year. Kia said this will “allow for the shortest lead times for the MY20 e-Niro since launch”. Customers who place an order for the e-Niro now could receive their car as early as next month, Kia added. The newer Soul EV has also fulfilled its UK allocation of around 1200 units, so Kia is upping supply slightly to meet demand. A UK spokesperson for the brand estimated that it would sell roughly 1400 Soul EVs in 2020." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/kia-boosts-supply-e-niro-and-soul-ev-meet-demand You can listen to all 860 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. The LiveWire had the potential to change that and open new doors. While it hasn’t completely failed, I don't believe it has succeeded either. The way I see it, there are 2 reasons for that and here's my two cent about it." So what are those two reasons? And is one of them the range which I told you was my main let down. "Today, people have access to more electric models options than ever and while 110 miles is a decent range for an electric bike, it might not be enough for the LiveWire to stand out of the stylish, efficient, and affordable electric motorcycle crowd. Because now we all know: an electric orange comes at a price. The company announced on Monday that the LiveWire was on track to hit the showrooms this year and that the price tag would be set at $29,799. With young adults dealing with more debt than ever, $30k will be better spent on purchasing a car (or groceries) than a bike." "The company did have the opportunity to bring Alta Motors on board, a well-established competitor in the field of electric bikes that likely would have propelled H-D forward in its electric ambitions. Would a partnership have resulted in a cheaper LiveWire? Maybe not, but Alta's contribution to the project could have meant a sweeter deal for the money." So i got it wrong with 59 miles, I don't think i was looking at the correct number. The Harley website says: "The high-voltage battery, or RESS, provides an estimated 110 miles of range, measured using the MIC mixed-use cycle. Riding range estimates based on current SAE testing of LiveWire concept motorcycle. Actual riding range will vary based on several factors including weather and driving conditions." https://www.rideapart.com/articles/300795/weekend-wtf-harley-davidson-livewire/ https://www.harley-davidson.com/gb/en/motorcycles/future-vehicles/livewire.html LYNK & CO'S HATCHBACK DROPS MAJOR CAMO IN NEW SPY PICS "Lynk & Co is progressing with the development of its fourth model which will take the shape of a compact hatchback. This fresh batch of spy photos reveals the company is in the advanced stages of testing as its prototype is featuring less and less camouflage." reports Anthony for Motor1.com: "According to unconfirmed information, the model will be based on the architecture that will also underpin Volvo’s upcoming revamped 40 series of compact cars. The Swedish hatch and small wagon are rumored to go fully electric, but that won’t be the case with Lynk & Co’s sibling. It may seem like a conventional ICE-powered vehicle but underneath the skin should be a compact plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. This system should be good for a purely electric range of about 50 miles (80 kilometers)" https://www.motor1.com/news/300930/lynk-co-hatchback-spied/ JAGUAR AFFIRMS FORMULA E COMMITMENT DESPITE IMPENDING CUTS "Jaguar Land Rover revealed last week that it will cut 4,500 jobs from its global operations, with the majority of them hitting management roles in the UK and the company set to start a voluntary redundancy programme." says Alex Kalinauckas for Motor1.com: "But [James] Barclay, the FE squad’s team principal, stated that Jaguar would carry on racing for the “longer-term” as it fits with the manufacturer’s recent drive towards electrification on its road car models. "It’s an unprecedented time for the car industry,” he told Motorsport.com: “A lot of geopolitical factors are affecting the industry at the moment – a slowdown in China, slowdown in diesel sales and we have that small matter of Brexit in the UK, which is affecting consumer confidence. So, we have to take some key decisions now to protect the long-term future of our company. [It’s] really important we make those steps now. But at the same time, we also announced that we’ll be building electric drive units at our engine manufacturing plant in Wolverhampton and also building a battery plant in Birmingham." https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/jaguar-fe-commitment-job-cuts/4323781/ GAC MOTOR UNVEILS CONCEPT CAR ENTRANZE GAC Motor officially announced that it has registered its North American Sales Company in Irvine, Calif., near Los Angeles. The regional headquarters will be responsible for branding, marketing, product planning and financial affairs. GAC Motor also announced at the press conference that the GAC R&D Center Detroit has officially begun operation. Located in Farmington Hills, Mich., the new R&D center was built with an investment of US$ 4.4 million and encompasses nearly 50,000 square feet of real estate. And as for their new electric concept, it's the ENTRANZE. "The Slick Bullet shaped exterior is completely breathtaking in the real flesh and introduces brand new proportions. New 3+2+2 seating arrangement and ‘aircraft inspired aisle’. Two-side mounted displays for functional feature control, plus curved displays for passenger entertainment. With most of the car made of environmentally sustainable materials, the interior of ENTRANZE is more influenced by home decoration than cars and is a great contrast to the technology and the stark exterior." https://insideevs.com/gac-entranze-naias-photos-videos/ RENAULT EXPANDS ZOE FLEET IN ZITY CAR SHARING IN SPAIN "The new electric car sharing service Zity in Madrid, Spain turns out to be very popular as 157,000 people used it in the first year." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The fleet of 500 Renault ZOE Z.E. 40 is soon to be expanded by another 150 ZOE to 650 total by the end of January. We don’t know the number of trips, but as many customers were using Zity more than once, it’s maybe on the track to profitability." https://insideevs.com/renault-zoe-fleet-zity-car-sharing-in-spain/ WHY THE MCLAREN P1 IS A LIVING LEGEND "The 903bhp McLaren P1 is now six years old but remains an awe-inspiring machine. Motorious hosted the McLaren halo car at Autosport International 2019" says AutoClassics.com. Although it's not a Plug In car, it was a very early hybrid supercar. Using the Formula-1 inspired hybrid technology for performance, it was the first of a new breed. These days no supercar would be complete without a big battery so help out the wheezing old fossil engine. And since then we've had fully electric supercars from the likes of the Rimac Concept One, and the Rimac C_Two. https://www.autoclassics.com/posts/reviews/mclaren-p1-motorious BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT ON EVS "The day after Christmas, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave us an unexpected gift. Brake pads on Teslas would “literally never” need to be replaced, he said, thanks in part to the electric car’s regenerative brakes cutting way down on brake pad use compared to a conventional car. That seemed a little too good to be true! But maybe not impossible, exactly" said Erik Shilling of Jalopnik. But then he asked, would an EV maker really say you never need to replace them? He asked Jaguar who said: "The brake pads on the I-PACE do indeed need to be replaced periodically. As you might imagine, the rate at which this is required varies widely owner to owner, based on his/her individual driving style. The battery must be below approximately 80% state of charge in order to receive the full benefit of the resistance of the electric motors. The idea here is that we can’t overcharge the battery and force additional electrons in, if it’s already full, so the resistance provided by the motors gradually does decrease the fuller the battery is requiring the use of the standard braking system." And Erik asked GM: "The regenerative braking feature of the Bolt EV allows the vehicle to decelerate with less use of the vehicle’s base hydraulic brake system. However, the actual mileage that the brake lining’s life could be extended varies due to the parameters under which the vehicle is driven." Tesla didn’t reply to his request for comment but hey if Elon has tweeted, don't correct the boss. Leave it. https://jalopnik.com/the-truth-about-brake-pad-replacement-in-teslas-and-oth-1831591519 DIESEL POPULARITY ON AUTO TRADER FALLS 40% IN TWO YEARS "Searches for diesel cars on Auto Trader have plummeted 40% over the past two years. The online classified marketplace said the proportion of fuel related searches attributed to diesel on Auto Trader has dropped from a high of 71% in November 2016, to a record low of 47% last month." in a new MotorTrader.com article: "Annually, between 2017 and 2018, there was a 40% increase in consumers searching for AFVs, with electric alone recording a spike of 52%. In just two years, searches for AFVs and pure electric have increased a significant 130% and 179% respectively." https://www.motortrader.com/motor-trader-news/automotive-news/diesel-popularity-auto-trader-falls-40-two-years-15-01-2019 HACK YOUR WAY INTO A NEW TESLA MODEL 3 "Tesla has been working closely with white hat hackers for years in order to make its vehicle software safer and now it’s taking an unprecedented step: it’s going to be giving away a Model 3 to a hacker who can crack the vehicle." reports Fred Lambert at Electrek: "Over the past 4 years, Tesla has been running a bug bounty program and according to sources familiar with the effort, the company has given away hundreds of thousands in rewards to hackers who exposed vulnerabilities in its systems. The automaker increased its max payout per reported bug to $15,000 last year and it also took a great step in reassuring owners who are hacking their own vehicles. Tesla said that it will not void its warranty when a vehicle is hacked for “pre-approved good faith security research:” But now the top prize being offered is even more valuable, a free car to the winner of a hacking contest. https://electrek.co/2019/01/14/tesla-model-3-giveaway-hacker/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Sunday 29th April 2018. LYNK&CO WILL BE HYBRIDS Volvo’s sister brand Lynk&Co has announced that the crossovers it will be building in Belgium to serve the European market will not be fully electric, but hybrid. Lynk&Co wants to attract young urban people with a subscription programme, which would allow customers to rent a car for just one month up to a few years and change their car for another model up to four times per year” says FleetEurope. Mats Fagerhag, Vice President of Geely Auto Group, said: “From the very beginning of the CMA’s development, the flexibility to support future powertrain technologies, such as PHEV, HEV, BEV, mild hybrid and traditional fuel was very much our vision. The new energy plan for Lynk & Co will be implemented in stages with the goal of following PHEV with HEV and then BEV”. TESLA RESPONDS TO MUNRO Munro and Associates recently talked about the Tesla Model 3 in an Autoline After Hours video, Teslarati noting: “According to Sandy Munro, everything about the Model 3 from its suspension, all the way to its battery pack, are industry-leading, and if Tesla had only ensured that its build quality was as good as its technology, it would have “wiped the floor with everybody.” But Mr Munro wasn’t totally complimentary. He thought the build quality wasn’t as good as it should have been, the frame was too heavy, and he hated having no physical latches on the doors. Although on that last point, if you want the video, he does come across as an old man who doesn’t like the technology. Even though he’s clearly an expert, that one point sounded like when you’re trying to set up your parents WiFi. Tesla has responded in a statement: “The primary car evaluated by Munro was built in 2017. We have significantly refined our production processes since then, and while there’s always room for improvement, our data already shows that Model 3 quality is rapidly getting better. Since we began shipping Model 3 last year, we have been very focused on refining and tuning both part and body manufacturing processes. The result being that the standard deviation of all gaps and offsets across the entire car has improved, on average, by nearly 40%, with particular gap improvements visible in the area of the trunk, rear lamps and rear quarter panel. Today, Model 3 panel gaps are competitive with Audi, BMW, and Mercedes models, but in the spirit of relentless improvement, we are working to make them even tighter.” BYTON VP OF DESGN SPEAKS Recently at the Milan Design Week, Byton showed off their EV concept. BYTON’s VP of Design, Benoît Jacob is the former VP of Design at BMW. During his time at BMW, Jacob was the head of various projects, including both the i3 and i8 electric vehicles. Now, at BYTON, Jacob is responsible for building a concept. “I think the ability to update software, functionality and things like that will be on a day-to-day basis. And this is, of course, something we have to integrate as a technology into the car.” BYTON’s SUV will be available in China towards the end of 2019 and in the US and Europe in 2020 with a price starting at $45,000. MOTOR DEALERS NEED EV-ANGELISTS The whole ev-angelist thing is clever but maybe a bit overdone, but that’s exactly what dealers need according to a new report. Motor Trader website says “one in three UK dealerships don’t have a single EV trained technician in their workshops but the majority now recognise the need to increase the number of EV trained technicians in their dealerships and train existing sta The Institute of the Motor Industry has been campaigning for some time for the government to give further backing technician training for electric vehicles. In July last year it reported that the percentage of technicians trained to work safely on the high-voltage technology remains at 1%.” DRIVING ON A SOLAR ROAD Elon Musk occasionally likes to counter arguments against solar power by saying that the world is solar powered – the sun being the source of everything. Scott Brusaw and his wife Julie have spent just about every day over the past 10 years developing Solar Roadways. He says: “"We signed with our first manufacturing contract in Dayton, Ohio. So, they'll be making the first SR4's. And we're in talks with our first manufacturing company here in North Idaho," he said. "That means we can get the price way down. And our ultimate goal is to have this at a big box store where homeowners can do their driveways, business people can do their parking lots." KREM says: The Brusaws got to the next phase with the help of a record-setting crowdfunding campaign back in 2014. It raised more than $2.2 million. After Indiegogo, credit card and other fees, the Brusaws say they got about $1.5 million before the tax man took another huge chunk. This allowed them to buy a Sandpoint building to serve as the Solar Roadways research and development headquarters. They hired a few employees and bought their first small scale manufacturing equipment. Of course, they were not actually made to make solar roads since nobody ever needed machines for that before” TESLA OWNER BANNED The BBC reports that: “A driver who moved into the passenger seat after putting his Tesla into autopilot while at 40mph on a motorway has been banned from driving. Bhavesh Patel, 39, of Alfreton Road, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at St Albans Crown Court. A witness in another car filmed him sitting in the passenger seat of his Tesla S 60 on the M1 between junctions 8 and 9 near Hemel Hempstead. A statement provided by a Tesla engineer said the autopilot was intended to provide assistance to a "fully-attentive driver", the court heard.” I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
