Measuring Heat pump system design with Brendon from HeacolLink to slides for the test can be found hereTHE TEST RIGBrendon discusses how he first designed the test rig with Ulster University for testing the heat pump he had built which is specifically adapted for UK climate, the UK's building stock and how the homes in the UK are commonly heated e.g. a combi boiler. When RHI was first introduced, it required heat pumps to have costly certification and sadly Brendon's heat pump had to be put on the back burner... after all, Brendon is extremely busy installing heat pumps for people and has been putting heat pumps in for many years. (Note, if you are an investor in innovation you'd do well to contact Brendon to discuss this heat pump)The test rig uses a 500L thermal store to simulate the internal of a property "it's got inertia, it's got thermal capacity and it's got buffer " A plate heat exchanger connecting the thermal store to the heat pump simulates a radiator system which can have temps and flow rates changed. Brendon describes how this set up is able to run different testing than the excellent Energy House at Salford University and benefit from quick responses to different heating stratagies and scenarios. TESTING SYSTEM DESIGN testing a heat pump system with 3rd party controls and buffer tanktesting a heat pump system with weather compensation and buffer tanktesting a heat pump system with weather compensation and no buffer tank e.g. open zone or what has been called direct in the test which can be found hereThe test simulated a house with an 11.5kW heat load. With the first test the heat pump had to run at 50 degree Celsius flow to maintain an internal temp of 21 degrees. In the second test the flow temp dropped to 45d.The final test, with open zone system, no buffer and controlled with manufactures wether compensation controls only required a flow temp coming from the heat pump of 35 degrees CSupport the show

Transcript: EP27 - Boeing 777x Wing Tips, 737 Max Troubles, More Otto Celera 500L and AutoFlight V400 News Dan: You're listening to the struck podcast. Dan: And here on struck, we talk about everything. Aviation, aerospace engineering, and lightning protection for aircraft radomes. All right. Welcome back to the struck podcast. In today's episode, we are going to cover a bunch of interesting topics. Number one. There was a recent, uh, engine fire causing a emergency landing with an . We're going to chat a little bit about that. Uh, and our engineering segment, the 777X. So obviously Boeing's had a lot of press recently, most of it bad, but we're going to talk a little bit about the engineering and the 777X and they're folding wind wingtips, which is pretty cool technology. Uh, we're going to chat more about the Boeing 737 max. Obviously the congressional report just came out today. We're not going to touch on that in this episode, but we are going to talk a little bit about some of the executives and the D the D design process and their defense of it. And then we're going to chat a little more about the Otto Celera. 500L - So the Otto aviation, they're one of their really unique jets, um, uh, planes. Uh, they have some crazy efficiency claims. We touched on it last time. We're going to chat a little bit more about it today. And then lastly, in our EVTOL segment, we're going to talk about the Autoflight V400. Uh, which is a unique cargo, um, you know, electric vehicle that's coming out of, and it looks like China and we will chat about it. And as well as maybe the, some of the bigger models that auto flight is going to be spring off of that one. So, Allen, how are you, sir? Let's jump right in the, had an engine fire this weekend. Uh, I was at American airlines or this week and American airlines, Airbus, a three 20. They landed safely, but how common is this? How scary is this? I mean, what's your take here. Allen Hall: It's not common. And to have engine fires, obviously it usually raises some red flags with all the certification authorities when that happens and all the mechanics that are associated with it in the pilots too. So there'll be paperwork filed. Uh, it'll get reported, uh, and you, if you actually follow the aviation safety, Databases. You'll see those lists of incidences pop up. So you can actually scan, uh, how many times they've had brake problems, landing gear problems. Don't deploy flaps, don't work. It's actually pretty common. Now the engine fires a different level, right? Fire's bad on any airplane, but things that break are, are pretty common. So the driver here is that. Um, there's been a lot of, uh, engine related issues lately. Um, just because of the newer designs that are trying to drive efficiency way, way up. Uh, and when you do that, you can have some funky things happening. Remember all these engines today are all electrical, electronically controlled. There's a lot of hi Lee efficient, um, highly refined stuff going on inside that engine. So, and top of it, they're made not to catch fire. Right? So something has gone really wrong here and it'll the engine be pulled off, tore down, looked at right. And. Try to find a root cause to it and then alert everybody if it's related to some other issue that is going on it's, but it's a,

The Otto Aviation Celera 500L makes some big fuel-efficiency and operation cost claims. It can glide 125 miles from 30,000 feet, but can it deliver on these promises? Joined remotely by lightning protection expert. Allen hall, Allen, how are you? Great, Dan. Hey, uh, just reading the information about that auto, uh, aircraft design kinda looks like a fish with a propeller on the back. That's a pretty cool thing. New technology, sort of old technology combination between the two. Super dynamic. Yeah. We've got some interesting things to cover today. So with our, some of our news stuff, um, there was a man in a jet pack reportedly near LA lax airport. So that's terrifying. So we'll talk a little bit about that. Uh, Gogo has been sold to Intel set, so some movement in the radon because radon business, uh, we are going to talk about the auto aviation. Uh, they have a bullet shaped plane, which. That's some really interesting specs. I mean, it can glide up to 125 miles. They said. So the fuel efficiency is they're proposing is tremendous. Um, and lastly, we'll also chat a little bit about, uh, potential for a supersonic air force, one, a Hyundai entering the EBTL market. And some battery advances by Tesla that might make a real big difference also in the electric aviation. So first let's talk about this jet pack fellow. Uh, what is your take here? I, I saw this article. That they're investigating that there might've been a guy very close to the airport, which is obviously big cause for concern. Um, I mean, how do they regulate this stuff at the airport? Can't fly anything near an airport because an aircraft might run into it. So they're super cautious. Pilots are very aware of, of periphery peripheral things around the airport that could pose a safety risk to the aircraft. So, uh, seeing, uh, somebody in a jet pack suit or something of the sort, probably set off a lot of alarm bells in the cockpit and, uh, because. The sh he shouldn't be doing that, but I don't think they have found who, who, what, when, where this thing is like this, this is still sort of a mystery. As far as I can tell from the news sources, they haven't identified who was doing this. And is it, it wasn't a real person. Was it a dummy? Was it a drone of some sort who knows? Right. It could have been a high school kid with. So, you know, some sort of who, obviously they're not the kids aren't really at school right now looking to, you know, entertain themselves who knows. Uh, but it is a real safety risk. Holy moly. Well, just, I mean, we were talking about bird strikes last from last week. Yeah. We'll we'll we don't need to have his human strikes with people. Just stop there. And I mean, that's horrific, so yikes. Yeah. They got to stay, stay away from the airport, right? Yeah. And are the, you know, the iron man movies have. Uh, have a creative influence on a lot of, uh, people who are sort of quasi scientific and have the skill sets to, to make stuff. Right. So in today's world, it's not very hard to, to buy little jet engines that can propel you that have more thrust. Um, then your body weight and so they can lift you up. And, um, the guys off of, uh, MythBusters, do you ever see that episode or the one of the MythBusters guys built that iron man suit and was flying around in it?
In this episode, I interview Damian Mackey, a master distiller of whisky and gin and the founder of New Town Distillery in Hobart, Tasmania. In 2005, he started building a small distillery (Mackey’s Distillery) in his backyard in Hobart, and in 2007, filled their first cask with triple distilled Irish style single malt whisky, which was matured five years later. In 2014, he partnered with Sheena state, moved, launched an award-winning Gin, took on investment, and went from using a single 300 litre still at home to a 4,500 litre and two small stills. The distillery grew from laying down 400 litres to around 100,000 litres, and recently sold out of a large business to return to distilling at home where he is now doing about 8,000 litres a year. Damian recommends investing 10% to 20% of sales into marketing, and finding an expert to work with. He went from 1 full time employee to 6, then back to 1. He insists that business and financial planning using KPIs, ensuring you’re well funded, and getting and keeping mentors are crucial to success. He believes the hardest thing in growing a small business is, “Balancing the resources you pile back into the business”. The advice he would give himself on day one of starting in business is, “Make sure you’re doing something you’re passionate about, is unique, and has a point of difference” Stay tuned for more on Damian’s entrepreneurial journey. This Cast Covers: Moving from distilling as a hobby to being the only commercial scale distiller doing triple distilled single malt whisky in Australia. From a 300 litre still to a 700 litre still: Damian’s whiskey-making back story. Their move back to smaller scale distilling and their current phase of laying down barrels. Developing and launching their award-winning Poltergeist gin. Being the only distillery doing pot still whisky and encouraging others to try it out. Learning a lot from doing 100,000 litres a year to the current 8,000 litres a year. The importance of getting down a marketing plan and working with an expert in the area. Making things easier and ensuring sustainable growth by automating production processes. Funding the business from their own savings and how they benefited from a state government grant. How plenty of funding would help in building a large distillery. The challenge of leaving Shene Distillery to go back out on his own. How a small business owner can get their head around their startup business through business planning. Continuous measuring of real-life results against results projected during business planning. Ensuring employees are passionate about their work and always on the same page as a team. The value of online courses: Reading a lot about making whisky. The extra effort that has to be put in when a business is owned by partners. The challenge of balancing the resources that are piled back into a business. Starting businesses that we are passionate about so we can courageously face the challenges that come with it. Last week, we brought you the news that the iconic Lincoln Continental was more than likely living out the last of its golden years in a suburban Michigan facility before being ferried away to sedan heaven where it could be free to drive around with the Buick LeSabre. It just so happens that there’s another ailing model that’s soon to be stricken from the production lines and, well, I feel like you should know. This time, it’s not Ford planning a funeral, rather, Fiat Chrysler.FCA has been riding the waves of the Jeep craze for the last several years, but it’s the automaker's small cars that are languishing, especially its Fiat brand. According to a recent report in USA Today, Fiat sales peaked in the U.S. in 2014, which was the last time gas was over $3 a gallon, and since then they’ve basically been in free fall – dipping 66 percent over the four years that followed. It’s no surprise, then, that Fiat has confirmed it will be killing, for the North American market, the Fiat 500 and 500e, the smaller versions of its tiny coupe.According to a statement made by the automaker, Fiat will continue to offer the Fiat 500X all-wheel-drive compact crossover in North America, along with the 500L wagon, and the Fiat 124 Spider roadster. According to the company, riding out the inventory should bring 500 and 500e enthusiasts into about 2020.USA Today says that low gas prices and an SUV-hungry market aren’t the only things that have worked against the 500. It says the brand ranked second to last in shopping considerations for American buyers and part of it was due to poor dependability ratings and a lack of body style modifications, leaving the model “out of sight, out of mind.” Even massive dealer incentives and discounting wasn’t enough to move the needle. They say these things come in threes. Which vehicle is next? You can bet when we find out, we’ll tell you.

General Motors is playing hardball with the Australian government over Holden. After being revived by Nissan, the Datsun brand introduces the first car it will sell in emerging markets. Rumors have been swirling that Honda will drop the Ridgeline but, according to reports, it’s just being put on hold. All that and more, plus find out just how much Fiat’s 500L had to change for the NAFTA region.
Remember when you were a kid and went in a tent for the first time and were amazed by how big it looked inside? That's what happens when you get in the Fiat 500L. You can't believe how big it is. And tonight's guest, Art Anderson, Chief Engineer of the car will be bringing one of those tent-sized 500Ls in-studio for us to check out. With 500 sales already catching up to the Mini brand, the L may just be the car that puts Fiat in the passing lane. And, as usual, the panel will be talking about the hottest topics going on in global automotive industry: Cadillac has killed its Ciel flagship, John McElroy has his impressions after a week with the Chevy Cruze diesel, and we'll look at lessons from Lutz's "Icons and Idiots." Joining John in studio is co-host Peter De Lorenzo, the Autoextremist, and Doug Guthrie of The Detroit News.
Another major automaker announces a significant price drop for its EV. OnStar teams up with another company to store electricity from solar panels in the batteries of a Chevy Volt for later use. According to reports, General Motors and Peugeot are in talks about selling a rebadged version of one of the French automakers commercial vans in the U.S. All that and more, plus a look at the big brother in Fiat’s lineup, the 500L.
Automakers rarely want to admit that suppliers often do a lot of their work, and that’s the case for Fiat and its 500e. Future generations of SYNC and MyFord Touch will incorporate two classic features to make them easier to use. BMW pulls the wraps off its all-new 4 Series Coupe. All that and more, plus what makes Detroit Electric’s SP:01 sports car tick?
