Why do I need to wear a seat belt if I am in the back seat? The question has once again surfaced following the unfortunate demise of former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry. The accident should serve as a wake-up call. According to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, those seated in the front seat or occupying front-facing rear seats must wear seat belts. Failure to do so can result in a fine of 1,000 rupees. But, people are either ignorant of this rule or wilfully disobedient. According to an August 2022 Local Circles survey, 70 per cent of Indians don't wear a seatbelt when seated in the car's rear seat. Against this backdrop, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said the Centre would now enforce the rule that all travellers in a car must wear a seat belt. He said a penalty had already been decided for defaulters, regardless of whether they were in the car's front or rear seat. The minister was speaking at a conclave organised by Business Standard. According to Gadkari, the notification for the rear seat belt mandate would be issued in a matter of days. Car makers, too, need to take note. Chances are, you may have even come across cars where the seat belt exists in the rear seat, but you can't locate the buckle to secure it in. That too will change now.   The government will also mandate a feature in all vehicles wherein an alarm will go off if the rear-seat passenger is not wearing a seatbelt. According to reports, the Centre is also planning to ban the manufacture and sale of seat belt clips and alarm stoppers, which act as a workaround to stop the seatbelt warning alarm from going off. Several online retailers sell these little tiny devices that have a seatbelt-locking mechanism that clips into the buckle. But, the belt that actually braces the user is missing. This is doubly dangerous in the event of an accident since the airbags may be inflated, causing even more injury to the occupants. It is the combination of seatbelts and airbags that ensures actual safety. The government has also been trying to make it mandatory for manufacturers to provide at least six airbags in certain vehicles. A draft notification to this effect had been issued in January. It was applicable to category-M1 vehicles manufactured after the first of October 2022. This category essentially includes cars that can seat up to eight passengers. However, more clarity is needed because when asked whether the government would make a minimum of six airbags mandatory from the October deadline, Gadkari's recent response was that the government was “trying”. The problem is that major automakers have been opposing the proposed rule. According to them, the industry's domestic capacity is not adequate for producing six airbags for each vehicle and it will take a significant amount of time to increase capacity. Previously, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had also said that faulty detailed project reports for national highways have played a big part in eroding road safety. Now, the government has mandated training for all consultants preparing detailed project reports. The recent spate of measures is heartening since India has been crying out for an intervention. After the US and Japan, India ranked third in road accidents with 480,652 cases in 2018. These accidents claimed 150,785 lives, which was more than any other country. These were the findings of a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the World Bank. Along with new and proposed safety norms, a combination of behaviour modification and enforcement is the need of the hour. Speaking to Business Standard, Rama Shankar Pandey, Managing Director, Hella India Lighting Ltd says, India has robust road safety regulation roadmap. But, enforcement is lacking. Shift needed from regulate and enforce to assist and alert regime. All stakeholders must create tech-enabled roadmap for the shift. Ravi G Bhatia, President, JATO Dynamics

ELON MUSK DUMPS $8.5B IN TESLA STOCK AHEAD OF TWITTER BUY - Elon Musk has sold off a whopping $8.5 billion in Tesla stock this week as he prepares to acquire Twitter for $44 billion – but he insists that the rest of his stake in the electric car maker will remain untouched for now. - Securities filings revealed Friday that Musk sold 5.2 million Tesla shares via open-market transactions that occurred on Thursday. That brings the total to 9.6 million shares after earlier disclosures detailed earlier stock sales worth $4 billion on Tuesday and Wednesday. - The stock sales in total amounted to 5% of his stake in Tesla - Musk still owns nearly 16% of Tesla shares, according to FactSet data cited by the Wall Street Journal. Original Source : https://nypost.com/2022/04/29/elon-musk-dumps-8-5b-in-tesla-stock-ahead-of-twitter-buy/ ANNUAL MEETING: MERCEDES-BENZ CONTINUES ITS SUCCESSFUL TRANSFORMATION - Focusing on electric vehicles and growing the top-end segment at Mercedes-Benz has paid off. Four figures illustrate this transformation: Group sales of the top-end models increased by 30%, sales of electric passenger cars increased by 64%, sales of electric Vans 118% and adjusted EBIT of the Mercedes-Benz Group grew by 123%. - This year the company expects to make further progress toward its long-term strategic goal of CO2 neutrality. With the EQS SUV, EQE SUV, EQT and eCitan models more than 10 fully electric vehicles will have been presented by the end of 2022. Moreover, with the Ambition2039, Mercedes-Benz Cars has set itself the target of reaching an important milestone as early as 2030 on the road to CO2 neutrality: to halve CO2 emissions compared with 2020 levels. Here, the most important levers are electrifying the vehicle fleet, charging with green power, improving battery technology and by extensively using recycled materials and renewable energy in production sites. Potential CO2 emissions are also evaluated as a criterion when contracts are awarded to potential suppliers. - Mercedes-Benz plans to cover more than 70% of its energy requirements in production with renewable energy sources by 2030. The manufacturer began replacing the battery packs of all affected vehicles from the 2017 through 2022 model years, and it looks like it's prioritizing older cars first. - Chevrolet has already replaced the battery pack in 62 percent of affected Bolts built under the 2017 through 2019 model years. Chevy says that last quarter it changed 26,952 battery packs. - Another document issued for 2021 through 2022 model year affected Chevy Bolts shows that these newer cars haven't received new batteries yet - just 701 swaps were performed out of a total 52,414 pool of affected vehicles. - Owners of Bolt EVs equipped with the new battery are also reporting a range increase with the fresh pack. When our own Tom Moloughney took part in a range test of a Bolt with a newly replaced battery, he found that post swap it was able to travel for around 13.5 percent longer than before. Lockdowns in China have worsened the visibility of semiconductors and the logistics have become the next challenge for Tata Motors given the lack of availability of containers, he said. - The impact of the chip shortage is more “acute” in electric vehicles than gasoline models, Chandra said. The waiting period for electric vehicles at Tata Motors could be as much as six months, compared with four months for cars with internal combustion engines, he said. - Tata's foray into semiconductor making will also help its group firm, Tata Motors, which makes the iconic Jaguar Land Rover brands and has suffered due to these shortages. - also announced plans to launch its first-ever pure electric car by 2025. The five-seater Avinya will have no gasoline variants, Chandra told reporters in a briefing on Friday. - Tata Motors currently sells two battery-powered models, the Nexon EV and Tigor EV, but these cars also have variants that run on fossil fuels. NORTHVOLT BATTERY PLANT SPARKS INTO LIFE, A FIRST FOR EUROPE - Sweden's Northvolt said on Wednesday its new gigafactory in northern Sweden has assembled its first battery cell, making it the first European company to design and manufacture a battery on the continent. - The cell is of a prismatic cell format - a variety of thinner and lighter battery - and came off the assembly line on Tuesday. - Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson had told Reuters that the new factory would produce a battery this year "even if it means the first battery is made on New Year's Eve". - The company is aiming for the Skelleftea plant to achieve production capacity of 60 gigawatt hours (GWh) as it aims for at least a 20-25% market share in Europe by 2030. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/technology/northvolt-produces-first-battery-cell-sweden-gigafactory-2021-12-29/ - Tesla is due to launch its first factory in Europe shortly and Asian rivals have significant operations in Poland and Hungary - but no European firm had yet operated a significant facility until now. - The new factory, dubbed "Northvolt Ett" (Northvolt One) in Swedish, already employs 500 people and will likely have as many as 3,000 staff once it reaches full capacity. - The Swedish company, which has already raised funding of several billion euros, was founded in 2016 by Carlsson and Italian Paolo Cerruti, both former Tesla employees. - Its location, some 200 km from the Arctic Circle, was chosen because it is near important sites of renewable production in northern Sweden, including hydropower. Original Source : https://www.euronews.com/next/2021/12/31/northvolt-powers-up-europe-s-first-homegrown-ev-battery-gigafactory-in-a-bid-to-beat-tesla US: VOLKSWAGEN ID.4 GROSS RESERVATIONS EXCEED 40,000 - Volkswagen of America announced that the ID.4 model is among the fastest-selling VW vehicles in the U.S. with nine out of ten buyers identifying as first-time EV buyers. The number of gross reservations (since the ID.4 introduction in March 2021) has increased to more than 40,000 (as of mid-December), out of which over 15,000 cars were sold. - Assuming that there were not many resignations, there are still some 25,000 ID.4 buyers waiting for Volkswagen to ramp up production and sales, which is not easy considering production constraints and high demand also in Europe. - The good news is that in 2022, the company intends to launch localized production of the ID.4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Battery cells for the cars will be supplied by SK Innovation's SK On from the new battery plant in Commerce, Georgia. An automaker's Prime Directive is to produce vehicles that open their doors and drive off on the first attempt, just as a telephone that struggles with audio calls is flawed, no matter how marvelous its other capacities. But five years from now, nobody will remember the glitchy door handles I experienced in early-production vehicles. THE TESLA MODEL 3 - The Tesla Model 3 has only been in Europe for a couple of years now, but it has been an instant hit. In 2021, it is expected to be the best-selling EV there, topping competitors like the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Renault Zoe, according to a new report. You can see why Tesla CEO Elon Musk is so anxious to get Tesla's factory in Germany up and running. - That report, published in Automotive News, also says that, unsurprisingly, Tesla will be the best-selling EV brand, too, though Volkswagen will be the best-selling EV company, by virtue of selling EVs not just with the Volkswagen marque but also electric Audis, Cupras, Skodas, and Porsches, too. - Sales of the Model 3 jumped 84 percent to 113,397 through November, according to data from JATO Dynamics market researcher. Volkswagen's ID3 compact hatchback is likely to be at No. 2. ID3 sales rose 125 percent to 63,109 in the first 11 months. The Renault Zoe, 2020's best-selling EV is on track to be No. 3. Through 11 months, Zoe sales were 60,551, down 27 percent. For those not in the know, the Ryzen (formerly Atom) is responsible for handling infotainment duties on Tesla EVs. It's directly responsible for the screen's responsiveness when activating menus, playing games, loading apps like YouTube or Netflix, and swiping around the navigational map. - The first Model 3 and Y vehicles with MCU3 (Infotainment Computer with AMD Ryzen) are now being produced and delivered in North America! - One other notable change coming alongside the Ryzen chip is the inclusion of a new, smaller Li-ion battery to power the vehicle's 12-volt system. This replaces the antiquated 12-volt lead-acid batteries found in almost every other internal combustion engine vehicle and previous Teslas. The Li-ion battery, which is shared with newer Model S and Model X vehicles, weighs just 4 pounds compared to 27 pounds for its lead-acid predecessor and should last the life of the car (instead of 2 to 4 years). TESLA'S $1 TRILLION VALUE A DOUBLE BONANZA FOR MUSK - The surge in Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) stock market value beyond $1 trillion on Monday is a double bonanza for Chief Executive Elon Musk, the electric car maker's largest shareholder. The stock rallied 12.7% on news that Tesla landed its biggest-ever order from rental car company Hertz. - With Tesla's stock at a record high close of $1,024.86, Musk's 23% stake in the newly minted trillion-dollar company is now worth about $230 billion - Musk receives no salary at Tesla: his pay package provides 12 options tranches that vest when Tesla's market capitalization and financial growth hit a series of rising milestones. The options let Musk buy Tesla shares at $70 each, a discount of more than 90% from their current price. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/teslas-1-trillion-value-double-bonanza-musk-2021-10-25/ TESLA-HERTZ BLOCKBUSTER DEAL PAVES WAY TO TAKE EVS MAINSTREAM - Hertz Global Holdings Inc.'s $4.2 billion deal with Tesla Inc. is about more than just an order for 100,000 cars. It's about vaulting electric vehicles into the mainstream. - Not only does Tesla get a huge order at a premium price, it gets a way for the electric-curious masses to test-drive its Model 3. Hertz, meanwhile, gets to tap into the growing interest in EVs while aligning itself with the industry's leader and sexiest brand. Tesla also will benefit from exposure in a splashy Hertz ad campaign starring seven-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady. - “This is an opportunity not only to fix the business, but also to employ a strategy that allows us to play a central role in development of the modern mobility industry,” Mark Fields, Hertz's new interim chief executive officer and a former CEO of Ford Motor Co., said in an interview. “One of our objectives is to lead in the adoption of electric vehicles.” - Elon Musk said in Twitter post that he was a bit surprised by the “strange” jump in value, considering that his automaker's already selling as many cars as it can make as it speeds up production. - Until now, Tesla has relied on word-of-mouth and eschewed traditional advertising entirely. But a side benefit of this deal is the Hertz ad campaign where Model 3 rentals will be the focus of Brady's message. Two TV spots debuting today -- entitled “Plugged In” and “Speed” -- show the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback renting, recharging and driving a Tesla from an airport. The tag-line for the commercials is Brady's signature exhortation, “Let's Go!” - Tesla also benefits simply from the size of the order, which is about $4.2 billion, according to people familiar with the terms of the deal. That value suggests Hertz is paying close to full price, breaking with a long-time tradition of automakers selling their wares to rental companies at a deep discount. - Hertz also said it's installing “thousands” of charging stations that will augment Tesla's supercharging ports in the U.S. and Europe. - For more context. that's more than the 93,000 that Tesla registered across Western Europe in 2020. In a memo submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last week, regulators noted that Tesla has requested “confidential business information (CBI) treatment for the entirety of the information request submission.” Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/25/22744629/tesla-autopilot-secret-response-nhtsa-investigation PANASONIC UNVEILS PROTOTYPE BATTERY TO HELP TESLA LOWER PRODUCTION COSTS - Panasonic on Monday unveiled a new large prototype battery designed to help Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Inc lower electric vehicle (EV) production costs, in a move the Japanese company's battery chief said would deepen business ties with its key U.S. customer. - as the sole manufacturer of the 4680 format (46 millimetres wide and 80 millimetres tall) battery, Panasonic should remain a critical link in the EV maker's supply chain, at least for its pricier models. Original Source : https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/panasonic-unveils-prototype-battery-for-tesla-2653594 TESLA BUILDS DATA CENTER, R&D FACILITY IN CHINA - Tesla said on Monday that it has built a research facility and a data center in Shanghai, both of which will be put into use soon, as the United States electric carmaker ramps up its localization strategy in the country. - The R&D facility, Tesla's first outside the US, employs engineers for software, electronics, materials and charging, it said in a statement. Tesla said the facility will develop over time similar in size to the one in the United States. - The newly built data center in Shanghai will store Tesla's operation data locally. At an industry forum in September, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said data security will become even more important when vehicles are becoming smart and autonomous. - China issued trial guidelines on automobile data protection in August in a move to protect drivers' privacy and safeguard national security as vehicles are becoming increasingly digitalized in the world's largest auto market. - Tesla said data about its vehicles sold in China as well as their local production, sales, after-service and charging information will be stored locally in the country. This is both the first time an EV has led the EU market and the first time that a vehicle manufactured outside of Europe has occupied the top spot. - Since its' entry to the European market, the Model Y has also performed well, securing second position in the BEV ranking. Due to the success of these two models, Tesla leads the BEV market with a share of 24%, ahead of the Volkswagen Group with 22%, Stellantis with 13%, and Hyundai-Kia with almost 11%. The EQB, which was presented in April, is manufactured there for the world markets – only the China-specific version is built by the joint venture BBAC in Beijing. - the angular EQB is only eight centimetres shorter than the EQC, but a full 22 centimetres longer than the EQA. Technically, however, the EQB is more closely related to the EQA; both are based on Mercedes' compact car platform, - Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó was also present at the event to mark the start of series production. He indicated that the Hungarian state had provided 15 billion forints (about 42 million euros) in support of the 50 billion forint (equivalent to about 136 million euros) investment in the plant. Welcome to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN OLEARY HYUNDAI IONIQ 6 ELECTRIC SEDAN SPIED TESTING IN GERMANY "Hyundai reportedly took the Ioniq 6 back to the drawing board for some last minute design changes. We therefore don't know if the final production interpretation of the model will look like this prototype or if it will even more closely resemble the stunning Prophecy concept that previewed it." asks InsideEVs: "while previous prototypes were spotted with cameras instead of regular side mirrors, these newer prototypes featured the latter. Hyundai is building the Ioniq 6 on it E-GMP dedicated electric vehicle platform and thus it will surely share many components with the Ioniq 5. However, the largest available battery will be bigger than the Ioniq 5's 72.6 kWh pack and it could be closer to 100 kWh (with around 300 miles of range), according to some rumors." VOLKSWAGEN REVEALS PHEV PLANS WITH >100 KM RANGE ""In the course of a presentation of its current plug-in hybrid models, Volkswagen has given an outlook on its upcoming PHEV strategy. A new generation of plug-in hybrid drives is expected to be used from 2023." says electrive :"the battery capacity and thus the electric range are to increase significantly – the latter to around 100 kilometres.  Volkswagen's PHEVs will in future have a fast-charging option with a CCS connection, enabling significantly faster charging processes than with the existing single-phase onboard chargers with only 3.6 kW charging power. Media reports indicate that the AC onboard charger could also be upgraded. From the 3.6 kW single-phase mentioned at the beginning to 11 kW three-phase" Read more: https://www.electrive.com/2021/09/29/volkswagen-reveals-phev-plans-with-100-km-range/ VW WASTES NO TIME JOSTLING FOR GERMANY'S NEW POLITICAL PARADIGM "On Monday morning, the man who prevailed in Germany's race to succeed Angela Merkel as chancellor called on potential partners to join him in a new government as soon as possible. Olaf Scholz, of the center-left Social Democrats, appealed to the environmentally minded Greens and pro-business Free Democrats to back a three-way coalition following his narrow victory in Sunday's election." reports Bloomberg: "Just a few hours later, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess took to Twitter to sketch out the car giant's vision for a new government. His 10-point wish list includes calls to expand renewables, curb coal, raise the price of CO2 and scrap subsidies for gasoline and diesel fuel. VW's CEO openly trying to speed up the demise of the internal combustion engine would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. the SPD has repeatedly called on the industry to be more ambitious when it comes to phasing out the combustion engine. The party was instrumental in denying the industry's request for a scrapping bonus for older gasoline and diesel vehicles at the height of the pandemic last year." The company had 315 jobs posted on its website on Monday, Sept. 27. Tesla announced it was building a “Gigafactory” in southeastern Travis County in July 2020. The factory is set to employee 5,000 people with annual wages starting at $35,000." says local news channel KVUE: "Ed Latson, executive director at Austin Regional Manufacturers Association, told the ABJ that, more than likely, more jobs are coming when the Tesla plant begins production. POWER CUTS MAY STIFLE CHINESE DEMAND FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES "China's power cuts could put a dent in the booming electric vehicle (EV) sector as the suspension of charging stations in parts of the country keeps some battery-powered cars off the roads, analysts said." according to South China Morning Post: "The power blackouts in more than 10 provinces across the mainland are likely to further sap drivers' appetite for EVs in regions where their take-up is already low. “In northeast China, electric cars have been greeted with a lukewarm response for many years,” said Zhang Fan, a car insurance broker in Jilin province. “The power cuts could further siphon off buying interest in electricity-powered vehicles.”" https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3151085/chinas-switch-financing-overseas-renewable-energy-projects CHINA'S CARMAKERS ARE MAKING CHEAPER ELECTRIC VEHICLES "As the world enters the era of the electric vehicle (EV), are we about to see a sea change in the identity and makeup of Europe's streets?  The quality, and, more importantly, the affordability of Chinese EVs is becoming a situation that is harder for European manufacturers to ignore with each passing year, and it could be just a matter of time before the market becomes flooded with imports from China." says Euronews.com: "According to a report from automotive data analysis firm Jato Dynamics, the average price of a new electric car in China since 2011 has fallen from €41,800 to €22,100. While China's significant manufacturing capabilities have never been in doubt, the question was whether it would be able to innovate to the same degree as its Western counterparts. That question has been answered in the form of their batteries and the technology they are able to implement inside their vehicles (although parts of the industry are still subsidised by the Chinese government)." Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 19th August. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.  FIRST VW ID.4 ELECTRIC SUV PRE-PRODUCTION UNITS ROLL OFF THE LINE AT CHATTANOOGA FACTORY - The first VW ID.4 electric SUV pre-production units have rolled off the assembly line at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory. - Scott Keogh, president and CEO at Volkswagen Group of America, has confirmed that the first pre-production units have rolled off the assembly line. He shared images in a LinkedIn post: - That moment certainly came during my last visit to the Volkswagen Chattanooga assembly plant in Chattanooga, TN. While I was there to tour our electric vehicle expansion at the plant, I had the pleasure of watching a pre-production version of the VW ID.4 come down the line with Thomas Du Plessis. This early model is a way for us to validate the build process, components, and procedures in advance of full assembly which is scheduled to begin next year. Just as important, it represents our $800 million dollar investment in EV assembly for the region – and our commitment to the high-tech jobs that will keep this facility humming. - VW most recently launched the ID.4 AWD Pro electric SUV in the US starting at just $36,175 with incentives. In a letter from Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson, the company announced that vehicles would not be delivering this spring as initially promised. Instead, customer deliveries will begin sometime in the second half of 2021. We are almost two months into the second half of 2021, but nothing has really happened...until now. - This morning (August 18th, 2021), customers who reserved the Lucid Air Dream Edition got an email update that says: Get ready to confirm your Dream Edition It's nearly time to confirm your order. - we know that Lucid Motors is currently testing the range of the car. Once again, these tests are a must for Lucid Motors to start delivering its car. If the Lucid Air Achieves an Estimated EPA Range of 517 Miles on a Single Charge, it would be the first EV to achieve that Original Source : https://www.dailylucid.com/post/expect-lucid-air-deliveries-soon AUSTRALIA: HYUNDAI LAUNCHES CHEAPER SHORT-RANGE KONA ELECTRIC AND DROPS LONG-RANGE PRICE - Hyundai says it will launch a cheaper, shorter-range all-electric Kona on the Australian market in a bid to make it more affordable and accessible to more drivers. - Priced from $54,000 before on-road costs in the Elite trim, the “Standard Range” Kona Electric has a 39.2kWh battery and offers 305km driving range ( - Hyundai is further dropping the price of both its long-range Kona Electric variants by $1,500 and $2,000 respectively, after price reductions from Tesla for its popular Model 3. The delays appeared to be affecting a range of Tesla models including its Model Y and its deluxe $124,000 Model S Plaid, CNBC said. - Musician David Crosby tweeted on Tuesday that he ordered a Tesla car seven months ago and the company has "lied to us 4 times about when we would get it." - The delays also appear to be affecting the $40,000 Model Y. CNBC reported a customer as saying that they placed an order in May for a Model Y and was told he would get his car at the latest by July 28. The date then switched to August 10 on his online account, and kept getting pushed later. Today, consumers in China can buy a brand new EV for as little as €3,700.  In stark contrast, the average retail price for an EV in the US continues to rise faster than any other major global market and now stands at €36,200, up from €26,200 in 2011. - . In May 2021, EVs were on average 52% more expensive than ICE cars in the UK, and 54% more expensive in the Netherlands. In Germany, the average retail price of an EV is €39,755 compared to €36,979 for ICE vehicles. Norway is the only exception – the average retail price for EVs is €44,500 compared to €53,000 for ICE cars. According to data from car industry analysts Jato Dynamics, electrified vehicles – either full-EV or PHEV models – accounted for 12% of all cars sold across 23 European markets, including the European Union member states, the UK, Norway and Switzerland." reports Autocar.co.uk: "The Renault Zoe hatch led the sales of full BEVs, with the 99,261 examples sold in 2020 a 118% year-on-year increase. That helped the Zoe pass the Tesla Model 3, 2019’s best-selling BEV. Tesla sold 85,713 Model 3, representing a 9% year-on-year fall. The new Volkswagen ID 3 hatch was third on the best-seller chart, with 56,118 units sold, despite only going on sale in the middle of last year. The latest report on Tesla’s new chips stated that mass production was planned for Q4 2021 – meaning that we aren’t likely to see those chips inside Tesla production vehicles until 2022."   https://electrek.co/2021/01/25/tesla-partners-samsung-new-5nm-chip-full-self-driving-report/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK What do you want to be able to do to, or with, your car from a mobile app or web dashboard? Gospodarze podcastu przytaczają ciekawe dane z najnowszego badania InsightOut Lab i opowiadają o pierwszym elektrycznym SUV-ie marki Volkswagen – modelu ID.4. Gośćmi specjalnymi odcinka #16 są Wojciech Drzewiecki, prezes Instytutu Badań Rynku Motoryzacyjnego SAMAR i Jan Wiśniewski z Polskiego Stowarzyszenia Paliw Alternatywnych (PSPA). It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ANDREW GREEN   CLARIFICATION #1 Last week I brought you the story about EV's beating diesel for the first time. I wasn't clear, and I should have been, that it was BEV/PHEV and HEV. So not just cars with plug sockets on. "Data from Jato Dynamics shows one in four new cars registered last month was a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, while the diesel market slumped to a record low. It’s the first time more than 300,000 hybrid and electric cars have been registered in a single month, and only the second time they have made up more than 20 percent of European registrations." says Motor1.com: "the Volkswagen Group, which includes Skoda, SEAT, Audi, and Volkswagen among other brands, is now Europe’s top-selling electric car manufacturer, while Mercedes-Benz was the plug-in hybrid market leader with a 22 percent market share. The best-selling single electric car, however, was the Tesla Model 3, with 15,702 examples registered."   https://www.motor1.com/news/452034/hybrid-ev-demand-outstripped-diesel-europe   CLARIFICATION 2 Also last week we talked about Panasonic developing the 4680 batteries with Tesla. And I wasn't sure at the time if that was to work on cells or battery assembly. And further reporting over the weekend show that Panasonic is indeed going to make the 4680 cells at GigaNevada with Tesla. Panasonic’s Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda: "also said the company has decided to launch an additional production line at the Nevada factory next year, increasing the plant’s total capacity by some 10% to 38-39 gigawatt hours (GWh) a year by around 2022. “We are targeting a profit margin of around 5% at our Tesla battery business within two to three years,” he added."   The balance of making 2170 cells vs 4680 cells wasn't discussed.   39GWh would be 780,000 batery packs a year at an average size of 50Kwh, and 520,000 packs a year at an average of 75kWh per pack. Either way, a lot of cars and storage. Tesla have a pathway to ~2 million cars by the end of 2022 Berlin and Austin at volume production so Nevada could supply a quarter to a third of the required batteries. The Berlin made Model Y will be the first volume production vehicle to use the 4680 cells, shipped from the pilot line at Kato Road in Fremont. The shift from 2170 to 4680 will be one to watch.   @elonmusk 7 Oct Berlin will use 4680 cell with structural battery pack & front & rear single piece castings. Also, a new paint system.  Lot of new technology will happen in Berlin, which means significant production risk. Fremont & Shanghai will transition in ~2 years when new tech is proven.     BIDEN AIMS TO IMPROVE US EV TAX CREDIT "If elected president of the United States, Joseph R. Biden would do a few things for the electric vehicle industry. Biden plans to restore the full EV tax credit (permanently) for US-made EVs, remove the per-manufacturer cap, target it to middle-income consumers (

It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to our newest member of the Patreon gang signing up as a Producer. NIPUN CHOPRA thank you so much for supporting my work.   T-DAY OR E-DAY? I'm not sure whether to call it T-Day for TEsla, or E-Day for Electric. Either way, there were people actually waiting on the dockside of a port called Zeebrugge, in Belgium, here in Europe. The twitter account @MisterGreenEV got their drone out to film her arrival. Consensus seems to be between 2,800 and 3,000 Model 3's arriving today.   U.S. PLUG IN SALES FOR U.S. Numbers are coming in for January 2019 now and it's a great start to the year for EVs. "U.S. car sales in January 2019 are estimated at over 1.14 million, which means it decreased by about 1%. In such circumstances, the plug-in electric car segment – which improved by almost 43% to 17,109 – is growing super fast." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The Tesla Model 3 remains the top choice for those who decided to purchase a plug-in electric car – we estimate that around 6,500 were delivered."                 https://insideevs.com/us-plug-in-electric-car-sales-charted-january-2019/   ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN UK DOUBLED IN JANUARY 2019 "In January, the overall plug-in electric market in the UK increased by 8.5% to 3,602 new registrations at a market share of over 2.2%. Total registrations decreased by 1.6% to 161,013. The single-digit growth was basically the result of a superb increase of all-electric cars, by 110% – the highest growth rate for several years, while the plug-in hybrids drag the plug-in segment down. 1,334 BEVs (up 110% year-over-year). 2,268 PHEVs (down 15.5% year-over-year)" Remember that here in the UK the grant for a full BEV was cut but a quarter, but the grant for hybrids was cut altogether. So that will have had an impact. Meanwhile, This Is Money says: "UK diesel registrations down 20% year-on-year in January - 40% over 24 months. Electrified models now account for 6.8 per cent of all vehicles sales. 86,000 of these cars are set to be ultra low emission plug-in hybrids and battery electrics - taking plug-in market share to around 3.7 per cent as an ever-increasing number of models come on sale."   https://insideevs.com/all-electric-car-sales-uk-phevs/   https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-6668901/Sales-new-diesel-cars-remain-free-fall-2019.html   EUROPEAN EV SALES FOR 2018 Meanwhile InsdieEVs has been looking at Europe. "Alternatively powered cars – 6.1% – 944,800. Hybrids – 555,000 (up 24%). Electric – 195,000 (up 47%). Plug-in hybrids – 180,000 (up 22%). all-electric cars increased by 47%, which is th quickest growth in the industry (even the hot SUV segment is growing by “only” 19%). With many new models coming on the market or in the ramp-up phase, we could guess that BEVs will be above conventional hybrids by the end of 2020, or at least 2021." JATO Dynamics said: "“Notably, most of the fuel type’s growth was driven by pure electric vehicles, which outsold plug-in hybrid vehicles, as their volume increased by 47% from 132,800 vehicles in 2017 to 195,300 vehicles in 2018. Norway was the biggest market for electric vehicles, where they held a 31% market share, while the Netherlands outsold the UK and became the fourth largest EV market, behind Germany and France.”"   https://insideevs.com/electric-car-sales-up-47-in-europe-in-2018/   POLESTAR 2 EV WILL BE UNVEILED FEB. 27 VIA LIVESTREAM "Polestar, Volvo's all-electrified spinoff, hasn't even put its first car into series production yet, but it's already getting ready to unveil its second, and it's happening soon." says Roadshow by CNET: "Polestar will unveil the Polestar 2 in front of a global audience on Feb. 27, a week or so ahead of the Geneva Motor Show. To keep things green -- a fitting theme, given Polestar's powertrains -- the debut will take place online, as opposed to flying journalists and guests into a single location. A copy of the livestream will be available on Polestar's site. It's believed to have a range around 300 miles, with an output around 400 horsepower. That's Model 3 territory, for sure. It should be available in a Care by Volvo-like subscription model, to boot."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/polestar-2-ev-unveil-february-27-livestream/   JOE ROGAN FINALLY DRIVEA A TESLA From Instagram to his 5.7m followers: " Driving this @teslamotors model S is truly one of the strangest experiences I’ve ever had behind the wheel of a car. It legitimately feels like something wrong is happening. Without a doubt the most preposterously quick vehicle I’ve ever driven. It feels like something Bob Lazar snuck out of Area 51. Elon, you knocked it out of the park with this crazy thing." So far that post has 232,000 likes!   WITH CPAAS, CHARGEPOINT ENABLES THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF EV CHARGING From a blog by Michael Hughes, Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer: "ChargePoint as a service (CPaas) is a new subscription model that empowers more organizations to be a part of the fueling network of the future. CPaas democratizes EV charging by bringing all of the benefits of the “as a service” pricing model to businesses interested in providing comprehensive EV charging solutions without purchasing them outright. ChargePoint as a service (CPaas) is a new subscription model that empowers more organizations to be a part of the fueling network of the future. CPaas democratizes EV charging by bringing all of the benefits of the “as a service” pricing model to businesses interested in providing comprehensive EV charging solutions without purchasing them outright. We’re thrilled to introduce CPaas, a straightforward subscription model that enables more organizations to deploy the industry’s most comprehensive suite of smart EV charging solutions available, as the transportation landscape rapidly transitions to electric. With CPaas you get exactly the e-mobility solutions that fit your business needs today, with room to grow in the future."   https://www.chargepoint.com/blog/cpaas-chargepoint-enables-democratization-ev-charging/   VW GROUP: OUR ELECTRIC CAR INVESTMENT IS ONE-THIRD OF TOTAL "The company entity known as Porsche SE is not a carmaker. It’s the financial holding company that owns the Volkswagen Group and all its brands, including Audi and Porsche. So it matters a lot what Porsche SE thinks about electrification." writes Bradley at InsideEVs.com: "Philipp von Hagen – executive board member of Porsche SE – was on hand at today’s BloombergNEF San Francisco Summit to share his take on EVs. Von Hagen was asked if Porsche SE (and therefore VW) is “all in” on electrification? He replied, “Not really.” Yes, Volkswagen has committed to $50 billion in electric cars, autonomous driving, and mobility services by 2024. But what von Hagen revealed – and I have not heard before – is what the $50 billion figure represents. It’s only one-third of the company’s investment powertrain technologies in the next five years. He said, “The investment is big and consequential, but we still are making two-thirds of our investment in existing drivetrain technologies.”"   https://insideevs.com/vw-electric-car-investment-one-third-of-total/   MORE SUPPORT FOR CHARGING IN UK Today (5 February 2019) the government has awarded more than £6 million to support ultra-low emission taxis right across the country, furthering its ambition for a zero emission future. Announced at the Smart Transport conference by the Future of Mobility Minister (jesse norman), the funding will see almost 300 rapid chargepoints and 46 fast chargepoints installed for ultra-low emission taxis in 17 local authorities, including in Greater Manchester, Brighton and Hove, Leicester and the north east.   FIA PLANS ELECTRIC OR HYBRID WRC RULES FOR 2022 "The World Rally Championship will move forward with an electric or hybrid solution from 2022" reports motorsport.com M-Sport team principal Rich Millener said: "“There will be some form of hybrid [in 2022], that’s a must,” said Millener. “It’s the only way some of the [current] manufacturers will stay in the sport and it’s the only way for us to attract new manufacturers. The main argument seems to be between low voltage and high voltage hybrid systems – but how do we integrate those systems and what do we use as a base."   https://www.motorsport.com/wrc/news/electric-hybrid-rules-2022-todt/4332167/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Interestingly, several experts told the publication sales of ICE-powered vehicles peaked in 2018 which basically means it’s unlikely that more cars with ICEs will be sold within a year in the future." according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "In 2019, global vehicle sales aren’t expected to decline as electric vehicles are expected to quadruple their market share to about 1.6 percent. Even if overall sales increase through the next 12 months, deliveries of ICE-powered vehicles will likely fall, say specialists." Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst for Jato Dynamics, told Financial Times: "We will probably see the peak of combustion engine car sales in 2018 based on global sales through October, plus estimates for November and December".   https://www.motor1.com/news/299727/experts-ice-sales-peaked-2018/   TESLA GIGAFACTORY GROUNDBREAKING: CHINESE MODEL 3 PRODUCTION ON TRACK "Late Sunday evening, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the automaker was hours away from an important event." reports Wade Malone for InsideEVs.com: "Now we know the official groundbreaking of Tesla’s Chinese Gigafactory in Shanghai will occur on Monday. Musk says initial construction of the Shanghai Gigafactory is set to be completed before the end of summer."   ElonTweets!   @elonmusk "Looking forward to breaking ground on the @Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory today!"   @elonmusk "Aiming to finish initial construction this summer, start Model 3 production end of year & reach high volume production next year"   @elonmusk "Shanghai Giga will produce affordable versions of 3/Y for greater China. All Model S/X & higher cost versions of Model 3/Y will still be built in US for WW market, incl China."   @elonmusk "Shanghai Giga production of Model 3/Y will serve greater China region"   As for Simon at Teslarati, he says: "Clues about Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 groundbreaking event emerged this weekend, ironically after Tesla’s critics shared information about the route of Elon Musk’s private airplane. By late Sunday (early Monday morning in China), invitations for the event emerged online. Tesla owner-enthusiast @vincent13031925, for one, shared an image of an invitation for the Gigafactory 3 ground-breaking event, forwarded by a Shanghai Tesla Owner’s Group member."   https://insideevs.com/breaking-tesla-china-gigafactory-groundbreaking-model-3/   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-3-china-breaking-ground-shanghai/     BYTON M-BYTE'S INFOTAINMENT SCREEN IS 7 IPADS WIDE Chinese startup Byton took the automotive world by surprise last year at the Consumer Electronics Show where it exhibited the M-Byte concept with a gargantuan touchscreen display for the infotainment system." reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "For this year’s show in Las Vegas, the company decided to unveil the production-ready cabin of its electric SUV, complete with an expansive 48-inch display or a bit wider than seven iPads put side by side. Tesla’s 17-inch screen doesn’t look so big anymore, does it? Dubbed the “Shared Experience Display” (SED), it’s by far the largest screen you will find in the automotive industry and stretches from one A-pillar to the other. While at a first glance it might seem distracting because of its sheer size, Byton mentions it does not interfere with the driver’s line of sight." "A full reveal of the Byton M-Byte production version is programmed for the middle of the year ahead of production start towards the end of 2019 at the Nanjing plant in China. Buyers will get to pick between a 71-kWh, 250-mile base model estimated to start at $45,000 and a more expensive 95-kWh, 325-mile variant. The M-Byte electric SUV will be available at first in homeland China, with North America and Europe to follow in 2020"   https://www.motor1.com/news/299938/byton-m-byte-48-inch-touchscreen/   TRELUYER AND DE VRIES JOIN VIRGIN FOR MOROCCO FE TEST "Triple Le Mans winner Benoit Treluyer and Formula 2 race winner Nyck de Vries will drive for Virgin Racing at this weekend’s post-race ABB FIA Formula E test in Marrakesh." says Alex Kalinauckas for motorsport.com: "Factory Audi driver Treluyer will make his first official FE appearance in the test, which follows the Marrakesh E-Prix on January 12 and is open to any driver that has never held an eLicence.
