"The Delights of Dogs and The Problems of People is a study of domestic abuse. It asks what causes a mind to unravel and why we don’t recognise the dangers lurking under our own roofs until it’s too late. This is not a story of a monster and a victim – life is not that simple. Performed by Duncan Wilkins (Romeo and Juliet, MokitaGrit) and Rosalind Blessed (Octavia, RSC Barbican) and directed by Caroline Devlin (King Lear, Guildford Shakespeare Company), the production holds dear the pure love of a dog and an owner even as human relationships become destructive. Bound together by a discussion of common yet devastating issues, it will be performed alongside Lullabies for the Lost." 8TH, 10TH, 11TH, 14TH, 16TH, 22ND, 24TH, 28TH, 30TH OF JANUARY AND 1ST OF FEBRUARY 2020, SEE WEBSITE FOR DETAILS, £16.50(£12.50), OLD RED LION THEATRE, LONDON https://www.oldredliontheatre.co.uk/the-delights-of-dogs-and-the-problems-of-people.html Photography by Natalie Wells (apologies for cropping your work for podcast artwork purposes). 14th Star Brewing is craft beer Brewed With a Mission 14th Star Brewing co-founder Steve Gagner tells us how a late night of drinking led to a WalMart run for soapmaking supplies, and how this all ties in with his eventual interest in brewing and opening his own brewery. Despite the humorous roots, Gagner takes his beer very seriously and strives to serve his community, especially veterans. The original business plan was jotted on the back of a notebook while Gagner served on the battlefields of Afghanistan. Upon returning home, the plan was refined with the help of his best friend and fellow soldier Matt Kehaya. 14th Star opened their doors in 2012 with a 3.5-barrel brewhouse. As demand for their beer grew, 14th Star moved their current location in 2014 and upgraded to a 30-barrel brewhouse. We talk with Gagner about hazy IPAs and the difference in a Vermont IPA and NE IPA, maple beers (we kind of had to), and we talk about his efforts to serve veterans, common misconceptions the public has about veterans, and the best thing we can do to support veterans once they return home. Amanda and Sam discuss sections 2-5 of the 14th Amendment. When Zack falls asleep, Amanda and Sam are left to their own devices and start reciting Poe.
How can we maintain our freedom when living in society with others? What principles inform good governance, where the civic bonds are not too restrictive but allow different people to live together as equals? How are our rights and duties interwoven in a republic? Have we -- in today's America -- lost the register that says that we have obligations toward others, and that being part of a republic means being bound together in a common enterprise? And, most importantly, can we return to a sense that rights and responsibilities, freedom and duty are inextricably interwoven? How we can heal the rifts that have opened in our country? I spoke with Professor Ekow Yankah of Cardozo School of Law. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Columbia Law School and Oxford University and focuses on questions of criminal theory and punishment and political theory and particularly, questions political obligation and its interaction with justifications of punishment.
Who’s In, and Who’s Out? Birthright Citizenship, with Martha Jones. Who’s in, and who’s out? Who belongs rightfully in America, and who can be excluded from the rights and responsibilities of citizenship? Who can stay, and who must go? Martha Jones explains the history of birthright citizenship, how Black Americans claimed the rights of citizenship long before the courts and Congress granted them such legal rights, and why this prehistory matters to understand today’s debates. Is it outrageous that senior officials question the right of birthright citizenship? You may think so, but you’d also be wrong to think that this right has not been contested from the very dawn of our Republic, and you’d be wrong if you think that birthright citizenship will disappear as a political and ideological or a legal and constitutional matter for all time. Martha Jones is the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor and Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, and the author of Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America and All Bound Up Together: The Woman Question in African American Public Culture 1830 -1900. In our conversation, recorded on election day 2018, when one of the fundamental rights granted to all citizens was put to the test yet again, she explains how Black Americans insisted on their rights as citizens for decades before the country caught up, with the 14th Amendment in 1868.
This week Beth and Kelly talk about the fake news in the run-up to the November 6th election, and a tiny bit of post election fakery. Did Mueller sexually assault a woman in the past? Is the caravan full of criminals and people from the Middle East, as Trump claims? Are we saying goodbye to the 14th Amendment? Did democrats just elect a bunch of racist, anti-semites? Join us and find out!
Mark Bland is joined by Producer Bobby and Gary Weed to discuss the upcoming 2018 midterms and voting in general! First up, Gary and Mark made a bet for the World Series and Mark ended up winning the bet. Discussion of the World series takes us down a sports path once again discussing the value of players within in their respective sports. Who was the best Baseball Pitcher of all time? Is it Greg Maddux or Rollie Fingers? Also who stands out in other sports. Hockey, Football and all of them. The guys discuss this at length. Then the gears get switched and it's on the to newest and dumbest thing that Trump could have ever proposed. He wants to use and executive order to remove and override the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. This definitely caught him some hell for even throwing it out there as a potential. All this comes on the backs of the Migrant Caravan making it's way up from Central America with estimates of 10,000+ people looking for asylum. The guys discuss aspects of this decision and the long term reprecussions that could form from this Trump decision. The discussion turns to video games on the release of the new Playstation Classic, but does it have the games people want or deserve? Everyone plays referee discussing what is on the machine and what is not. This leads to a convo about playing video games in 2018 on mobile devices and if you ever spend money on the games for yourself. Mark defends his spending money on a couple mobile games with the most basic of arguments..."I would have done it anyway." Listen as Mark explains and you see if he makes sense or not.
It's been a painful week in America. Kayla Stetzel and Amelia Irvine of Young Voices join Stephen Kent on the podcast to discuss the spike in political violence and hate crimes in the days after a political mail bomber was captured. Next, we debate the question of birthright citizenship and the 14th Amendment. Trump wants to change it via executive order, is that possible? Thanks for listening to Underscored! Society and the State | Life, Liberty, and Your Pursuit of Happiness
The story of the U.S. Constitution is one of a gradually expanding federal government that has slowly but surely outgrown the limits on its power. Nowhere is this more clear than in how the Bill of Rights, which originally limited federal power, has been imposed upon the states to make them subservient to the Washington D.C. Kevin Gutzman joins us to discuss how the Incorporation Doctrine has given the feds even greater power over the states and a moral standing that they may not have earned.

Answering one of Jan's most frequently-asked questions on the 14th amendment and birthright citizenship.
The podcast celebrates Brett's birthday this week by haphazardly covering Wonder Woman (the movie), Wonder Woman (the gender quality lawsuit), digging bodies up out of a graveyard, the availability of State Codes on Google, Tyrell v. BNSF Railway (personal jurisdiction and Ginsburg/Sotomayor fighting), Laroe Estates v. City of Chester (intervention and standing), Bitchin' Camaros, Home Alone and Die Hard as Christmas movies, Honeycutt v. U.S. (joint and several liability in conspiracy convictions), Advocate Health Care v. Stapelton (ERISA coverage for church-affiliated business), and Nazim's harsh review of the Thomas the Tank Engine movie. "Law" starts at (04:09), but its a bumpy ride.
On this Saturday’s episode of MotortradeRadio.com, the first for 2017, Philip Nothard and Derek Blair return to discuss the week’s headlines from Motortrader.com. This week, Vauxhall is the latest high-profile name to join the line-up of the 2017 London Motor Show. Following the successful relaunch of the event in 2016, the show returns to Battersea Park with Motor Trader as the B2B media partner. New car registrations hit a new record with 2.69 million vehicles sold in 2016, with many commentators predicting a slowdown in 2017. Lloyd Motor Group, the family-owned Carlise-based retailer, has acquired Clelands Jaguar for an undisclosed sum, and Lookers has bolstered its management team with the promotion of MD Nigel McMinn to the role of chief operating officer. McMinn joined Lookers in 2013 from Benfield. In another news, Smart has started to sell cars online with deliveries direct to a customer’s home or local dealer within 12 days of credit acceptance, and thousands of UK motorists are to launch a lawsuit against Volkswagen over #dieselgate. The class action is led by UK law firm Harcus Sinclair UK which specialises in large group litigation. cap hpi has confirmed the last printed edition of the iconic Black Book used car value guide will appear in February. At the same time, it will also phase out its Red and Green books, for commercial vehicles and motor cycles, in a move that will see the group complete its transition to a fully digital service. Finally, Philip and Derek discuss the big story of the week, with the Sytner Group acquiring the CarShop supermarket chain for an undisclosed sum.
This week's episode continues the discussion from last week about non-BOR amendments, only this week is decidedly more positive. This week centers mostly on voting, equality, and taxes; and to liven things up, Brett and Nazim suggest fairly unworkable changes to our existing system of government. Finally, Brett and Nazim discuss whether or not Citizens United, or any other proposal, will be the next amendment on this list. Law starts at (06:52).
U.S. Supreme Court Ignores Constitution The U.S. Supreme Court has actually violated the Constitution, specifically the provisions of the 14th Amendment's Due Process Clause, making legal in 1973 what was illegal for over 360 years in America. Numerous constitutional law scholars argue that the Roe v Wade ruling was bad law and bad constitutional law because the ruling itself was not constitutional. What is birthright citizenship and what was the intent of the 14th amendment? Do you need to be born in the United States to be a natural born citizen? Michael Brodkorb joined Ron and his in-studio guests, Joe and Cathy Daly, to discuss new developments in the story of two missing Lakeville teens, Samantha and Gianna Rucki. Plus, Joe talks about the Constitution and 14th Amendment following Donald Trump's recent comments on birthright citizenship.
This week's episode covers King v Burwell, a case that saved Obamacare in America despite being almost completely incorrect from a strict statutory construction standpoint. King is also compared to the Texas Disparate Housing case and how both cases illustrate the difference between being persuasive and being correct. Brett and Nazim also share their thoughts on the outcome of the same sex marraige case, despite recording the day before it was decided.
