It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MERCEDES-BENZ EQS SUV PROTOTYPE TOWING "A prototype of an SUV version of the upcoming all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS was recently seen in Germany, when towing a trailer during tests. We don't know much about this vehicle, beside that it's based on the Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA) platform (just like EQS, EQE and EQE SUV" says InsideEVs: "For sure it will be a large, luxury SUV, with a target range of up to 700 km (435 miles) in the WLTP test cycle. With trailer, we would expect maybe 200-250 miles. The EQS to be launched this year, but even this model is still undercover. If the EQS to be the first all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQ model in the U.S., then the SUV version has a chance to be the second."   https://insideevs.com/news/466933/mercedes-eqs-suv-prototype-towing-spy-video/   PANDEMIC CHIP SHORTAGES ARE SHUTTING DOWN AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTION "Advanced electronics have weaved their way into the modern car, from engine to infotainment and climate control to the buttons now sprinkled throughout the passenger cabin. The gains in amenity and efficiency can’t be sniffed at, but it leaves manufacturers reliant on semiconductor suppliers to get cars out the door. Over the past year, it’s become much more complicated — with many automakers having to slow production in the face of integrated circuit shortages that can be traced back to Spring of 2020" says the Hackaday.com website: "Automakers were forced to scale back production as factories closed to avoid spreading the deadly virus. This meant slashing orders with suppliers, particularly as the just-in-time nature of modern automobile production means there’s little to no space to warehouse excess parts in factories. Tier-one supplier Bosch have noted the shortage is particularly acute in parts used for engine and transmission control units."   https://hackaday.com/2021/01/18/pandemic-chip-shortages-are-shutting-down-automotive-production/   FIRST LOOK AT TESLA’S NEW STRUCTURAL BATTERY PACK "Electrek obtained the first picture of Tesla’s new structural battery pack with a honeycomb architecture that will power its future electric vehicles. Currently, Tesla builds battery packs by combining cells into modules, which when put together form a battery pack. That battery pack is installed into the vehicle platform. The difference with this new concept is that Tesla is not using modules and instead builds the entire battery pack as the structural platform of the vehicle" according to electrek: "The structural battery pack is expected to be first used in the Model Y that is going to be built at Gigafactory Berlin and in the new Model S Plaid. The image shows the battery pack without the new 4680 cells in them – showcasing the honeycomb design of the pack"   https://electrek.co/2021/01/19/tesla-structural-battery-pack-first-picture/   SCANIA’S COMMITMENT TO BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES The rapid development of electric solutions for heavy duty vehicles includes the fast advancement of battery technology in respect of energy storage capacity per kg. Charging time, charging cycles and economics per kg are improving rapidly. This means these solutions will become more cost effective, primarily in repetitive and predictable applications. They will gradually overtake Scania’s industry-leading fossil and biofuel powered solutions in most transport applications.   The company has already launched a fully electric truck as well as a plug-in hybrid truck. In a few years’ time, Scania plans to introduce long-distance electric trucks that will be able to carry a total weight of 40 tonnes for 4.5 hBy 2025, Scania expects that electrified vehicles will account for around 10 percent or our total vehicle sales volumes in Europe and by 2030, 50 percent of our total vehicle sales volumes are expected to be electrified.ours, and fast charge during the drivers’ compulsory 45-minute rest.   https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2021/01/scania_commitment_battery.html   MIAMI-DADE STARTS TRANSITION TO ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUS FLEET "Miami-Dade County Public Schools has made the decision to convert its fleet from diesel buses into an electric fleet. This push was driven by Holly Thorpe, a middle school student who used her science fair project to convince the school board that this switch was necessary." says CleanTechnica: "Superintendent Alberto Carvalho shared the good news with Thorpe that the district was applying for federal grant money from the $2.8 billion settlement fund that was a result of the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal. “We’re finally going to turn the yellow school bus green,” Thorpe said. “Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gases. Electric school buses are essential for the health of students and drivers.”   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/01/18/miami-dade-starts-transition-to-electric-school-bus-fleet/   VERMONT HAD THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF PUBLIC EV CHARGERS PER CAPITA IN US IN NOVEMBER 2020 "The number of public electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the country has been growing. As of November 2020, Vermont had the highest number of public chargers per capita with 114 EV chargers per 100,000 people, followed by the District of Columbia (81) and California (72), according to the US Department of Energy (DOE)." according to Green Car Congress: "Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia had more than 20 chargers per 100,000 people."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/01/20210119-doefotw.html   XPENG RELEASES AUTONOMOUS FEATURES FOR HIGHWAY DRIVING "The new autonomous driving feature will allow the company’s flagship P7 sedan to automatically change lanes, speed up or slow down, overtake cars and enter and exit highways." says CNBC: "Xpeng’s NGP is a challenge to Tesla’s autonomous driving system called Autopilot. The highway driving feature will be available on the premium version of the P7 and available to customers in China only."   https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/18/chinese-electric-carmaker-xpeng-releases-driverless-features-to-rival-tesla-.html   NISSAN QASHQAI ENGINES DETAILED: E-POWER HYBRID "Nissan has detailed the upcoming third-generation Qashqai small SUV’s two new engine options, including a ‘self-charging’ series hybrid called e-Power." says CarsGuide: "The e-Power powertrain combines a 140kW/330Nm electric motor with a 115kW 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, but only the former drives the Qashqai’s front wheels, with the latter instead responsible for charging its ‘high-output’ battery." “This means the engine can always run within its optimal range, leading to superior fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions compared with a traditional internal-combustion engine,” according to Nissan. energy is also recouped via regenerative braking, with the e-Power even featuring the all-electric Leaf small hatchback’s more aggressive ePedal functionality, which enables one-pedal driving in 90 per cent of scenarios."   https://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/2021-nissan-qashqai-engines-detailed-e-power-hybrid-option-headlines-new-kia-seltos-hyundai   RIMAC C_TWO FIRST-YEAR PRODUCTION RUN SOLD OUT "Rumors that the Rimac C_Two is completely sold out have been circulating around the internet since the Croatian company revealed the all-electric hypercar in 2018. However, that’s not completely true. Rimac CEO Mate Rimac took to Facebook yesterday to dispel those rumors with some much-needed context. However, in confirming that the C_Two wasn’t sold out fully, he did admit that the car’s first year of production was completely allocated for." reports Motor1: " the company has had the goal of having the car’s sales be 12 months ahead of its production, which is an amicable goal because the company has yet to reveal the production version or the car’s official name. The CEO also clarified in his post that “sold” to Rimac means that a dealer has ordered the model, though Mate has no concerns about selling the 150 examples the company plans to produce. Rimac will reveal the production version and the car’s official name “soon,” according to Mate’s post. Show #707   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 24th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   2 million downloads - did it last weekend!   WHEN RANGE ISN'T THE REAL RANGE "Tesla allows its owners to use more of the battery capacity by switching from its "Daily" driving setting to a special "Trip" setting, which is designed to provide maximum range. But the company has warned that using the function can cause battery degradation and that recharging the battery also could take longer." says Consumer Reports: " In the Trip driving setting, our Model 3 achieved 350 miles.  Models from Jaguar and Porsche actually do better in real-world driving than in the EPA tests. a Top Gear test in 2018 yielded 291 miles on a single charge for the I-Pace, about 24 percent better than the government estimate. Audi decided it was important to increase battery life while also delivering more consistent performance, company spokesman Mark Dahncke says. The fully charged Audi uses 88 percent of the battery’s capacity rather than 100 percent, he says. That limits range but makes the battery last longer.  Porsche spokesman Calvin Kim says Porsche’s cars are known for performance and on-road capability. Battery range isn’t as much a factor for consumers looking for a high-speed sports car."   From Tom at InsideEVs when he drove the Taycan Turbo driving from Atlanta, Georgia to Daytona Beach, Florida: "Even with the cold weather and rain, we averaged 2.96 miles per kWh over the 436-mile trip. If you multiply that consumption rate by the 83.7 usable capacity the Taycan Turbo has, you come up with 248-miles of range per charge. That's not bad, and much better than the EPA range rating of 201 miles per charge. Also notable is the fact that the EPA provided the range figures themselves, and that's not how it usually happens. Many people don't realize that the manufacturer does the range testing and provides the EPA with the range rating and the data to back it up. The EPA has the choice to accept that data and publish it, or to then do their own internal testing. In the case of the Taycan, the EPA decided to do their own range certification, and those numbers came out much lower than what Porsche expected. "   Read Consumer Reports here: "https://www.consumerreports.org/hybrids-evs/tesla-ups-ante-on-model-y-range-underscoring-ev-lead/"   https://insideevs.com/reviews/395038/porsche-taycan-road-trip-240-mile-range/   RIMAC C_TWO UNVEILED IN GENEVA From Youtube: "Next week we will unveil the final form of the Rimac C_Two at the Geneva International Motor Show. Not only a new shape but also a new name. In today’s episode of Mondays with Mate, our founder and CEO Mate Rimac will give you an exclusive preview and explanation of the changes that you can expect. The unveiling will take place on the 3rd of March at 12:00 CET."   [clip about cameras]   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n356-dqSmM   WATCH THE ELECTRIC VW I.D. R EMBARASS A MCLAREN 720S IN A DRAG RACE "To put the I.D. R’s performance into context, Chris Harris of Top Gear heads to the track to see what VW’s electric show pony is all about. The VW I.D. R is powered by a trio of electric motors with two up front and one in the rear. These electric motors are linked to two separate battery packs for perfect weight distribution. The result is an 0 to 60 time in 2 seconds and cornering speeds the surpass an F1 car. All of this is more than enough to embarrass a McLaren 720s in a drag race.   [clip about cameras]   https://www.motor1.com/news/400206/vw-id-r-race-mclaren-720s/   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om28CUu1m3I&feature=emb_title   VOLKSWAGEN ID R SPORTS CAR TO PIONEER SECRET BATTERY TECH "Volkswagen is planning an advanced new electric sports car that is earmarked to act as a figurehead for a limited range of performance-based ID R road cars and is set to go into production by the middle of the decade." says Autocar: " It has been suggested that the ID R could compete against the second-generation Tesla Roadster, if an internal ID sub-brand strategy paper calling for the proposed model to be assembled at the company’s Karmann offshoot comes to fruition. Porsche is developing an all-electric Boxster. While that model is thought to be based on either the Taycan’s PPE platform or an adapted version of the existing combustion engine platform, it’s possible the Stuttgart brand could make use of the MEB platform to create a sibling to the ID sports car."   The company’s motorsport director, Sven Smeets: "We are beginning to work on the first batteries for the performance road cars, using the dedicated team from the ID R, so there will be a direct link between them. The batteries start in the same area. At the moment we’re finalising the performance parameters of the batteries.”   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volkswagen-id-r-sports-car-pioneer-secret-battery-tech   HYUNDAI FOCUS ON EU ELECTRIC CAR MARKET "Hyundai started the year focusing on deliver electric cars to EU (European Union) countries, leaving its domestic market temporally forsaken." reports Pedro at Push EVs: "Due to stricter emissions regulations that started this year, Hyundai needs to increase its sales of electric cars in the EU to avoid huge fines. Therefore, from March this year Hyundai will start producing the Kona Electric in its Czech manufacturing plant to supply the European market, but until then, Hyundai sends almost all units produced in South Korea to Europe.   Domestic market (South Korea)   Hyundai IONIQ Electric: 2 Hyundai Kona Electric: 35     Foreign market (Mostly EU)   Hyundai IONIQ Electric: 1.403 Hyundai Kona Electric: 3.321"   Read more here: https://pushevs.com/2020/02/21/hyundai-focus-on-eu-electric-car-market/   LUCID MOTORS ANNOUNCES LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP WITH LG CHEM FOR BATTERIES FOR LUCID AIR EV "Lucid Motors said that it selected LG Chem for a long-term partnership because its batteries provide the ideal level of efficiency, with those batteries further optimized by Lucid to meet or exceed all target goals for range, energy density, and recharge/discharge rates." says Green Car Congress: "The advanced battery cells provided by LG Chem effectively allow Lucid to lock in core volume production forecasts for the Lucid Air for the next several years, with additional agreements to be announced in the future for special versions of the EV."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/02/20200224-lucid.html   CYBERTRUCK WIDTH @elonmusk: "in some prior tweets I’d said production Cybertruck would be ~80” wide (vs ~84” body width at unveil). This is slightly too small. Will be closer to 82”, but come standard with upper laser blade lights."   Inside EVs cites the reasons being bed width, three across seating and towing.     NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   How to persuade your friends, family and colleagues to buy an EV?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA UPDATE LETS DRIVERS STREAM SPOTIFY, NETFLIX, AND YOUTUBE "On Thursday, the latest over-the-air software update, known as Version 10, started rolling out to Tesla owners. The update packs in a lot of fun features, mostly for when the car is parked or charging." reports the tech site Mashable: "Games like Cuphead are coming to the Tesla Arcade and a new "Tesla Theater" application houses all the streaming video options. Caraoke is like it sounds: a karaoke interface with lyrics on the screen so you can belt out your favorite tunes. A Summon update will let you "summon" your car from a parking spot if it's in your line of sight. This is only available for drivers who have the Full Self-Driving version or Enhanced Autopilot package. Other updates will streamline Sentry mode, and the new mysteriously named "Joe mode" lets you lower the volume for parking chimes and other alerts if you have a sleeping baby in the car. The mobile Tesla app that lets you control the climate, unlock the car, and other options was also updated and now you'll be able to remote-control windows on the Model 3 and Model X from the app. "   ZDNet reports: "Along with Netflix, Tesla drivers will be able to view content from YouTube, and Hulu or Hulu + Live TV from the dash console.  Tesla's self-driving capabilities aren't yet advanced enough for drivers to switch off and watch movies, and thankfully the company notes that you can "watch your favorite shows, movies and content right from your car while parked". The company says customers have praised summon it for its convenience after shopping, but notes that "those using Smart Summon must remain responsible for the car and monitor it and its surroundings at all times". The feature is available to drivers when the car is within their line of sight. Owners of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus and Standard Range vehicles will now able to stream Spotify, TuneIn, and Slacker when connected to Wi-Fi."   And The Verge reports: "video recordings captured when Teslas are in their self-protect Sentry Mode are now stored in a separate folder from other camera content. A new “Joe Mode” is meant to avoid waking up sleeping passengers by reducing the volume of certain car chimes and alerts. And the Tesla mobile app can do a few more things and control even more aspects of the car remotely (like the windows)."   SlashGear on China: "Tesla customers in China will soon get iQiyi and Tencent Video access in the car with more services promised in the future."   Tesla says: "“We’re expanding our music and audio platform to enable Spotify Premium account access in all supported markets – one of the most requested features from Tesla owners. This will be in addition to Slacker Radio and TuneIn, which are also available in Tesla vehicles.”"  If you pause the video which Tesla put online today, there's Car Wash Mode. But what is that?   And on turorials: "Additionally, all customers will have access to Tesla tutorial videos to learn more about their vehicle."   In fact if you play that YouTube video frame by frame it says this:   Voice Commands Driving Visualization Maps Improvements Sentry Mode Improvements Software Update Improvements Application Launcher Updates YouTube Car Wash Mode Caraoke Spotify Cuphead Feeling Lucky Tesla Theater   TESLA JUMPS ON REPORT MUSK AIMS TO DELIVER RECORD 100,000 CARS THIS QUARTER "Shares of Tesla jumped more than 5% after Electrek, an electric vehicle news website, reported that CEO Elon Musk said the company “has a shot” at delivering 100,000 cars this quarter, which would be a new record." says CNBC.com: "Musk wrote in the email: “We have a shot at achieving our first 100,000 vehicle delivery quarter, which is an incredibly exciting milestone for our company!” The CEO also reportedly added, “The challenge is making sure that we have the right car variants in the right locations and rallying as much as our company resources as possible to help with the end of the quarter deliveries.” The automaker is expected to report its quarterly vehicle deliveries in the next few days."   https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/tesla-jumps-on-report-musk-aims-to-deliver-100000-cars-this-quarter.html   NORWEGIAN GAS STATION BECOMES FIRST IN WORLD TO REPLACE ALL PUMPS WITH ELECTRIC CHARGERS "Gas station" may no longer be an accurate description for a Circle K refueling outlet in Oslo, Norway, after it became the first in the world to replace all gas pumps with electric car chargers earlier this week." writes Newsweek: "The Oslo Circle K is one of the company's 16,000 gas stations around the world, but this location is the only one from any company to completely convert to electric fueling. The conversion to electric fuel "fast chargers" came at the same time as the United Nations Climate Action Summit was taking place this week in New York. Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian Electric Car Association, said in a press release that it "was extra fun to highlight this" at the same time world leaders were discussing climate change."   https://www.newsweek.com/norwegian-gas-station-becomes-first-world-replace-all-pumps-electric-chargers-1461714   FIRST GAS STATION IN AMERICA TO DITCH OIL FOR 100% ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "The first gas station in the U.S. that has been completely transitioned from a petroleum station to exclusively charging EVs opened Thursday in Takoma Park, Maryland." says CNBC.com: "RS Automotives, the local gas station, has been around since 1958. Depeswar Doley, owner of the station since 1997, said he was already unhappy with the way oil and gasoline companies structure contracts — such as limiting the use of multiple suppliers, including clauses that extend contracts when a certain volume of sales is not met and limiting maintenance support. These business factors already were pushing him to consider other options. A nudge from his daughter was the final step in convincing Doley to make the switch to EV charging. There are more than 20,700 registered EVs in Maryland, and the area also has an electric taxi service in need of more chargers for their business. The gas station conversion was jointly funded by the Electric Vehicle Institute and the Maryland Energy Administration, which provided a grant of $786,000."   https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/first-gas-station-to-ditch-oil-for-electric-vehicle-charging-now-open.html   THE HYUNDAI VELOSTER N ETCR HAS HIT THE TRACK AND IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE A STAR WARS SHIP "Hyundai Motorsport hit the Hungaroring with its all-electric Veloster N to get the machine primed and ready for next year’s ETCR racing series. And man does it sound freakin’ cool." says Jalopnik: The Veloster N has a much higher pitch to its powertrain than fellow EV series Formula E. Both have that whistle-y quality that’s common to an electric car as opposed to the grumble of a combustion engine"   https://jalopnik.com/the-hyundai-veloster-n-etcr-has-hit-the-track-and-it-so-1838488781   MASERATI'S BIG ELECTRIC PUSH: ALL FUTURE MODELS WILL BE EV OR HYBRID "Maserati today confirmed that it was electrifying its whole range - from sports cars to saloons and crossovers. The company is turning its Italian HQ into an electric car centre of excellence, it says, confirming that all future Masers will be made in Italy." writes Tim Pollard for Car Magazine: "Maserati revealed that every new model in the pipeline will be either hybrid or full battery electric, and vowed that the switch from oil to volts wouldn't dent its commitment to 'innovation and the high performance embedded in the brand’s DNA.' It also committed to 'extended range and ultra-fast charging capabilities,' perhaps made easier by the brand's relatively late arrival into the electric car space."   Follow Tim at @TimPollardCars   https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/maserati/   YOU CAN NOW BUY A PLUG-IN HYBRID BENTLEY BENTAYGA "Bentley's new Bentayga plug-in hybrid is now on sale in the UK with prices starting from a little over £133,000." reports Motor1.com: "The luxury 4x4 is described by its manufacturer as “the world’s first true electrified luxury car”, and offers an all-electric range of around 24 miles on the new and more stringent WLTP efficiency test. That’s provided by a 126 bhp electric motor, which is also used to eliminate turbo lag, while the power comes from a high-voltage battery that can be recharged in two-and-a-half hours."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/373273/bentley-bentayga-phev-pricing-uk/   AUSTRALIA IS GETTING MORE ULTRA-RAPID CHARGING "Chargefox, which claims to be Australia’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, is increasing the number of ultra-rapid EV chargers it has in the country." as per Business insider Autralia: "The company revealed the target locations for all 22 sites in the first phase of its ultra-rapid EV charging network. It is part of Chargefox’s broader goal to have more than 100 ultra-rapid charging sites in the country. Chargefox already has 5 ultra-rapid stations open in, with 17 more in the works. All 22 will connect Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, with additional sites in Western Australia and Tasmania."   WATCH THE 258MPH RIMAC C_TWO CRASH FIVE TIMES "WARNING: the following video contains footage that some viewers may find distressing. And by some viewers, likely it’ll be all of you.   That’s because this video contains footage of the £1.5m+ Rimac C_Two hypercar crashing. A lot. Five times, in fact. It’s all a part of the C_Two’s homologation process to ensure it’ll be safe and road-legal across the globe. Still, five times." says Top Gear: "No lie, it’s never easy watching a super-rare, very desirable 1,887bhp self-driving electric hypercar being squished against some very solid things. Rimac reckons on 0-62mph in a frankly terrifying 1.97s, 0-100mph in 4.3s, a quarter mile time of 9.1s and 0-186mph in 11.8s."   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/crash/watch-258mph-rimac-ctwo-crash-five-times   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   What do you want to hear on this podcast? Says Domenick for InsideEVs.com: “Nowhere is that perhaps more noticeable than at the Geneva Motor Show. The top eighteen machines share an astounding 17,000 ponies between them — that’s an average of 900 horsepower per — and battery power reigns supreme with the top two both being fully electric. the Rimac C_Two. It silently boasts 1,914 hp and 1,696 pound-feet of torque. The car with the second-highest amount of horse force is the gorgeous Pininfarina Battista."   Check out the gallery of Hypercars, I'll put a link in the show notes.   https://insideevs.com/horsepower-war-rimac-c_two-geneva/   VOLVO TO RELEASE POLESTAR 3 ALL-ELECTRIC COUPE-STYLE SUV IN 2021 "Volvo brand Polestar will introduce a new all-electric Polestar 3 SUV by the end of 2021, a company executive said." Reports Phil for Electric: "Following the recent unveiling of its Polestar 2 all-electric sedan, the company’s Polestar 3 will be a “coupe-style SUV,” Digital Trends reports. Polestar COO Jonathan Goodman said the new model will be released “in the back end” of 2021. Goodman also said Polestar will continue to expand its models throughout the next decade, and the company looks to keep its simple naming convention. Therefore, following the Polestar 3 would be a Polestar 4, and so on."   https://electrek.co/2019/03/08/volvo-polestar-3-suv/   TESLA MODEL 3 LAUNCHES IN MEXICO Meanwhile Steven Loveday at InsideEVs has the lowdown on Tesla moving into another country: "We already knew Tesla was pushing its hugely popular Model 3 midsize sedan to overseas markets, but to see it hit Mexico is a welcome surprise. Reportedly, the automaker sent invitations out for an open house in the country, as well as information about the electric car’s official launch. Today, Tesla will host the unveiling at its Mexico city store. Once again, Tesla proves that it’s branching out globally into a myriad of locales. While many naysayers will continue to assert that demand is limited and U.S. deliveries are lackluster, we can see where the Silicon Valley automaker’s newfound focus lies."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-launches-in-mexico/   NISSAN EXPANDS BEST-SELLING LEAF EV OFFER IN EUROPE Nissan has announced a wave of new versions and upgrades to the Nissan LEAF electric vehicle range, making Europe’s top-selling 100% electric car more appealing than ever. Following the runaway success of the LEAF e+ 3.ZERO Limited Edition, Nissan has made its longer range version available as a permanent addition in the Tekna grade. The LEAF will also offer a series of connectivity and technology upgrades to enhance the user experience. Coupled with the all-new Nissan Connect Services app, the new model’s navigation system gains TomTom LIVE premium traffic and route optimisation, providing comprehensive navigation assistance including door-to-door navigation. The all new Nissan Connect smartphone app will also include several remote control functions for charging and battery status. The Nissan LEAF variants are available to order now, with deliveries expected in summer 2019.   TESLA’S ONLINE-ONLY SALES MODEL DEFENDED BY USED CAR DEALER CARVANA CEO Simon at Teslarati has a story today on Tesla online sales. "Tesla’s decision to adopt an online-only model to sell its electric cars was recently defended by Carvana CEO Ernie Garcia, who went on CNBC’s Squawk Alley to discuss the electric car maker’s new sales strategy. Garcia noted that while Tesla will face challenges resulting from the shift in its sales model, the company’s return policy will likely be a difference maker for some buyers." Simon goes on to say: "Garcia’s views on Tesla is coming from a well-established position, as Carvana currently stands as one of the United States’ premier online used car dealers. Carvana sells, finances, and buys back used cars through its website, and its growth has been so impressive that the company ranked as 5th in Forbes‘s list of America’s Most Promising Companies in 2015. "   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-online-sale-model-carvana-ceo/   TESLA MODEL 3 REGISTRATIONS IN NORWAY SOAR TO 800 IN FEBRUARY Mark Kane for InsideEVs goes to Norway next: "In February, about 5,924 new passenger plug-in electric cars were registered in Norway, which is 33.2% more than a year ago, at a world-leading 53.3% market share! It was the best February ever. The month of February was the first for volume deliveries of the Tesla Model 3. The month closed with 791 new registrations, which is second only to the Volkswagen Golf (all versions), which probably means that Model 3 is ahead of the Volkswagen e-Golf."   https://insideevs.com/800-tesla-model-3-registered-norway/   ERIK BUELL TRADES PETROL FOR PROTONS WITH NEW E-BIKE STARTUP FUELL’s “urban mobility” positioning led to the creation of several machines to cover all the needs and styles of those who choose two-wheeled electric mobility. FUELL’s offer is centered around two products: FLOW – an electric motorcycle available in 11kW (125cc equivalent) or 35kW (motorcycle license) versions, combining practical aspects for the urban journey (integrated 50 liter/13 gallon internal storage), technological innovations (proprietary wheel-motor1, connected dashboard) and unparalleled driving pleasure thanks to its acceleration and low center of gravity. FLUID – a robust and elegant electric bike, with exceptional range (up to 125 miles thanks to its 2 removable batteries with a total of 1,000Wh) and generous torque (100Nm), virtually maintenance-free with its carbon belt and internal hub gears. Fluid is offered as a Pedelec (max 20 mph) or S-Pedelec (max 28 mph, requiring helmet and insurance in most States). Every step from design to manufacture had accessibility in mind: competitive prices (starting from $3,295 for Fluid and $10,995 for Flow), financing options that favor usage over ownership (credit, leasing, battery leasing), and a clear emphasis on easy handling and riding. These e-vehicles are upgradeable (battery, wheel-motor, charger,…) and are among the best performing on the market. They have a great autonomy (125 city miles for Flow), and recharge easily (at home for Fluid, in less than 30 minutes on a public charger for Flow). They also offer connectivity and security options, and are infinitely customizable.   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…   How do you feel about Tesla’s move to online-only sales? Do you want to test drive a car first? What about if you have to arrange finance to buy it, even tho Tesla say you can return it?     I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 197 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 16th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   My news yesterday that I had quit my day job, and indeed a 25 year radio career, seemed to resonate with people. Either those who had done something similar to chase a dream or those who wanted to.   So to those on Patreon…   JON BEARDY MCBEARDFACE (PARTNER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) WALTER MACVANE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON KNODEL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BORISLAV BORISOV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JEFF ERBES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)   WILLIAM ANZUETO (PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (PRODUCER) i3 AND 7KW OF PV! MARK GARNETT (PRODUCER) STE BIRKETT (PRODUCER) – FOUND ME RECENTLY MARTY YOUNG (PRODUCER)   BRUCE HARRISON R W SAVAGE     CLARIFICATION ON THE HARLEY DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE From Sabrina Giacomini at RideApart.com: "However, in recent years, innovation hasn’t been part of the brand’s lingo—its almost as though it’s been sitting on its legacy and relying on that and only that to sell bikes. The LiveWire had the potential to change that and open new doors. While it hasn’t completely failed, I don't believe it has succeeded either. The way I see it, there are 2 reasons for that and here's my two cent about it." So what are those two reasons? And is one of them the range which I told you was my main let down. "Today, people have access to more electric models options than ever and while 110 miles is a decent range for an electric bike, it might not be enough for the LiveWire to stand out of the stylish, efficient, and affordable electric motorcycle crowd. Because now we all know: an electric orange comes at a price. The company announced on Monday that the LiveWire was on track to hit the showrooms this year and that the price tag would be set at $29,799. With young adults dealing with more debt than ever, $30k will be better spent on purchasing a car (or groceries) than a bike." "The company did have the opportunity to bring Alta Motors on board, a well-established competitor in the field of electric bikes that likely would have propelled H-D forward in its electric ambitions. Would a partnership have resulted in a cheaper LiveWire? Maybe not, but Alta's contribution to the project could have meant a sweeter deal for the money." So i got it wrong with 59 miles, I don't think i was looking at the correct number. The Harley website says: "The high-voltage battery, or RESS, provides an estimated 110 miles of range, measured using the MIC mixed-use cycle. Riding range estimates based on current SAE testing of LiveWire concept motorcycle. This fresh batch of spy photos reveals the company is in the advanced stages of testing as its prototype is featuring less and less camouflage." reports Anthony for Motor1.com: "According to unconfirmed information, the model will be based on the architecture that will also underpin Volvo’s upcoming revamped 40 series of compact cars. The Swedish hatch and small wagon are rumored to go fully electric, but that won’t be the case with Lynk & Co’s sibling. It may seem like a conventional ICE-powered vehicle but underneath the skin should be a compact plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. This system should be good for a purely electric range of about 50 miles (80 kilometers)"   https://www.motor1.com/news/300930/lynk-co-hatchback-spied/   JAGUAR AFFIRMS FORMULA E COMMITMENT DESPITE IMPENDING CUTS "Jaguar Land Rover revealed last week that it will cut 4,500 jobs from its global operations, with the majority of them hitting management roles in the UK and the company set to start a voluntary redundancy programme." says Alex Kalinauckas for Motor1.com: "But [James] Barclay, the FE squad’s team principal, stated that Jaguar would carry on racing for the “longer-term” as it fits with the manufacturer’s recent drive towards electrification on its road car models. "It’s an unprecedented time for the car industry,” he told Motorsport.com: “A lot of geopolitical factors are affecting the industry at the moment – a slowdown in China, slowdown in diesel sales and we have that small matter of Brexit in the UK, which is affecting consumer confidence. So, we have to take some key decisions now to protect the long-term future of our company. [It’s] really important we make those steps now. But at the same time, we also announced that we’ll be building electric drive units at our engine manufacturing plant in Wolverhampton and also building a battery plant in Birmingham."   https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/jaguar-fe-commitment-job-cuts/4323781/   GAC MOTOR UNVEILS CONCEPT CAR ENTRANZE GAC Motor officially announced that it has registered its North American Sales Company in Irvine, Calif., near Los Angeles. The regional headquarters will be responsible for branding, marketing, product planning and financial affairs. GAC Motor also announced at the press conference that the GAC R&D Center Detroit has officially begun operation. Located in Farmington Hills, Mich., the new R&D center was built with an investment of US$ 4.4 million and encompasses nearly 50,000 square feet of real estate. And as for their new electric concept, it's the ENTRANZE. "The Slick Bullet shaped exterior is completely breathtaking in the real flesh and introduces brand new proportions. New 3+2+2 seating arrangement and ‘aircraft inspired aisle’. Two-side mounted displays for functional feature control, plus curved displays for passenger entertainment. With most of the car made of environmentally sustainable materials, the interior of ENTRANZE is more influenced by home decoration than cars and is a great contrast to the technology and the stark exterior."   https://insideevs.com/gac-entranze-naias-photos-videos/   RENAULT EXPANDS ZOE FLEET IN ZITY CAR SHARING IN SPAIN "The new electric car sharing service Zity in Madrid, Spain turns out to be very popular as 157,000 people used it in the first year." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The fleet of 500 Renault ZOE Z.E. 40 is soon to be expanded by another 150 ZOE to 650 total by the end of January. We don’t know the number of trips, but as many customers were using Zity more than once, it’s maybe on the track to profitability."   https://insideevs.com/renault-zoe-fleet-zity-car-sharing-in-spain/   WHY THE MCLAREN P1 IS A LIVING LEGEND "The 903bhp McLaren P1 is now six years old but remains an awe-inspiring machine. Motorious hosted the McLaren halo car at Autosport International 2019" says AutoClassics.com. Although it's not a Plug In car, it was a very early hybrid supercar. Using the Formula-1 inspired hybrid technology for performance, it was the first of a new breed. These days no supercar would be complete without a big battery so help out the wheezing old fossil engine. And since then we've had fully electric supercars from the likes of the Rimac Concept One, and the Rimac C_Two.   https://www.autoclassics.com/posts/reviews/mclaren-p1-motorious   BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT ON EVS "The day after Christmas, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave us an unexpected gift. Brake pads on Teslas would “literally never” need to be replaced, he said, thanks in part to the electric car’s regenerative brakes cutting way down on brake pad use compared to a conventional car. That seemed a little too good to be true! But maybe not impossible, exactly" said Erik Shilling of Jalopnik. But then he asked, would an EV maker really say you never need to replace them? He asked Jaguar who said: "The brake pads on the I-PACE do indeed need to be replaced periodically. As you might imagine, the rate at which this is required varies widely owner to owner, based on his/her individual driving style. The battery must be below approximately 80% state of charge in order to receive the full benefit of the resistance of the electric motors. The idea here is that we can’t overcharge the battery and force additional electrons in, if it’s already full, so the resistance provided by the motors gradually does decrease the fuller the battery is requiring the use of the standard braking system." And Erik asked GM: "The regenerative braking feature of the Bolt EV allows the vehicle to decelerate with less use of the vehicle’s base hydraulic brake system. However, the actual mileage that the brake lining’s life could be extended varies due to the parameters under which the vehicle is driven." Tesla didn’t reply to his request for comment but hey if Elon has tweeted, don't correct the boss. Leave it.   https://jalopnik.com/the-truth-about-brake-pad-replacement-in-teslas-and-oth-1831591519   DIESEL POPULARITY ON AUTO TRADER FALLS 40% IN TWO YEARS "Searches for diesel cars on Auto Trader have plummeted 40% over the past two years. The online classified marketplace said the proportion of fuel related searches attributed to diesel on Auto Trader has dropped from a high of 71% in November 2016, to a record low of 47% last month." in a new MotorTrader.com article: "Annually, between 2017 and 2018, there was a 40% increase in consumers searching for AFVs, with electric alone recording a spike of 52%. In just two years, searches for AFVs and pure electric have increased a significant 130% and 179% respectively."   https://www.motortrader.com/motor-trader-news/automotive-news/diesel-popularity-auto-trader-falls-40-two-years-15-01-2019   HACK YOUR WAY INTO A NEW TESLA MODEL 3 "Tesla has been working closely with white hat hackers for years in order to make its vehicle software safer and now it’s taking an unprecedented step: it’s going to be giving away a Model 3 to a hacker who can crack the vehicle." reports Fred Lambert at Electrek: "Over the past 4 years, Tesla has been running a bug bounty program and according to sources familiar with the effort, the company has given away hundreds of thousands in rewards to hackers who exposed vulnerabilities in its systems. The automaker increased its max payout per reported bug to $15,000 last year and it also took a great step in reassuring owners who are hacking their own vehicles. Tesla said that it will not void its warranty when a vehicle is hacked for “pre-approved good faith security research:” But now the top prize being offered is even more valuable, a free car to the winner of a hacking contest.   https://electrek.co/2019/01/14/tesla-model-3-giveaway-hacker/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 21st June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   VOLVO'S NEW HYBRID S60 HYBRID TO BE MADE IN U.S. The first major auto maker to publicly say they would electrify their entire range was Volvo, and now they've revealed one of those models to drive the company into an electric future. If you're in the market for a BMW 3-series, hold on to our wallet and check out the Volvo first. The new S60, which US listeners would call a mid-size Sedan or compact executive, is being built at their first plant in North American in South Carolina. It's a plant which will never see a diesel engine because they've been phased out by Volvo. In fact it was double bubble because they launched the new car and also inaugurated the factory. So what can we expect from a US built hybrid? There are four engine choices but two of them are electrified. The engines are gas (aka petrol) and include PHEV power. You can choose a Plug In T6 Twin Engine or the 400hp Plug In T8 Twin Engine AWD PHEV. We recently told you about the Polestar option too which, which sprinkles Swedish performance fairy dust over your car, which beefed up brakes, suspension and tuning. As for safety, there's Autobraking for collision avoidance with pedestrians or an elk on Swedish roads, Run-off Road Mitigation and Oncoming Lane Mitigation. Plus Volvo have their Pilot Assist which keeps you at Level 2 autonomous driving, so a bit steery and a bit brake-y, but not too much. It can do 28 miles of pure EV range. Can I add...my goodness it looks good. Prices start at $41,295 for anything with a battery and Volvo are pushing their Care By Volvo subscription plans, over two years with 24/7 customer care and breakdown assistance, plus all your maintenance and the bits which wear out like wipers and brakes. Of course if it's really a turnkey solution you'd need insurance, and that's sorted too, with Liberty Mutual.   PORSCHE BUY INTO RIMAC "Porsche AG is taking a 10% stake in Rimac Automobili, the Croatian hypercar and electric vehicle components company behind the world’s fastest electric car" according to TechCrunch. It's interesting this is happening since the Rimac C_Two is being designed with specs to make your eyes water and most big legacy makers have either been scrating their heads about how Rimac are doing it, or plain old dismissing the outrageous specs of 1,914hp and 0-60mph in 1.85sec, as not possible with an electric car. According to TechCrunch: "the company, which was founded by Mate Rimac in 2009, also engineers and manufactures high-performance electric vehicle powertrain systems and battery systems. The company has already worked with Renault, Jaguar, and Aston Martin. The company’s tech was even used in the E-Type Zero Jaguar driven by Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex at their wedding last month." Do you think it means things were going OK with Taycan, formerly the Mission-E, but they wanted to buy into more knowledge and expertise? TopGear says: "CEO and namesake Mate Rimac, who remains the majority shareholder, says entering into this partnership with Porsche “is an important step in [Rimac’s] strategy to become a leading EV technology supplier to global OEMs”. Porsche's Lutz Meschke said: "We feel that Rimac's ideas and approaches are extremely promising, which is why we hope to enter into close collaboration with the company in the form of a development partnership"   MEANWHILE FORD SAYS BATTERY TECHNOLOGY ISN'T READY   I hate to juxtapose that story of performance EVs to this one, but here goes. You know how Tesla announced the Semi Truck specs, and then the head of Daimler Trucks said they've be buying two, one to test and one to take apart, because the technology to make one doesn't exist? And that the same rules of chemistry applied in Fremont to Germany? Well now Ford are having their say. "The boss of Ford Performance in Europe told Whichcar.com.au that battery technology isn’t yet suitable for sports car duty" Leo Roeks, European director of Ford Performance: “I have to stay very high-level and very neutral, as I don’t want to make any hints about future products. We need to keep looking at the technology at this point in time. The expectation that we have on performance vehicles right now, it’s very difficult to fulfil that with a fully-electric vehicle. If we look at the battery at the moment, you can have an energy or a power battery – the energy battery is kind of like a big water tank, but it’s got a small pipe. You can leave the tap running for a fairly long time, not a lot of water comes out of it, but it takes ages to get the tank empty. Then again, it also takes a long time to fill it up. A power battery is like a very small tank of water with big pipes, which is relatively easy to drain but also very easy to fill it. I’m looking for something in between. At the moment, that technology is not yet there – that’s something we need to look at. The question is: how close we can get between power and energy.”   GERMANY COULD WIN THE BATTLE FOR EUROPEAN GIGAFACTORY LOCATION Elon Tweets! "“Germany is a leading choice for Europe. Perhaps on the German-French border makes sense, near the Benelux countries.” Investopedia reports: "[One] European location where Tesla has ongoing operations is in Pruem, Germany, about 20 miles from the Belgian border and around 60 miles from France. It hosts the Grohmann Engineering division of Tesla, which specializes in automated manufacturing systems for battery-manufacturing facilities. In recent times, Grohmann has successfully built a production line for Tesla’s U.S. battery factory in Reno, Nevada, which is aimed at supporting the production of its newest mass-market Model 3 car." A reminder of what Elon has said at both the recent Shareholder meeting and on the Q1 2018 earnings Call, all future Gigafactories will produce batteries and assemble cars. All continents will need a Gigafactory soon, to produce cars at lower costs, but the goal is to have 12.   WHY YOUR NEXT UBER COULD BE AN EV Uber told us: "We’re excited to launch the EV Champions Initiative, a pilot program for driver-partners to deliver at least 5 million EV rides over the next year. This program kicks off today in seven cities — Austin, Los Angeles, Montreal, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle — in partnership with leading electric vehicle (EV) adoption experts. This program builds off the success of existing pilots in Pittsburgh and Portland and we’re proud to team up with experts who have decades of experience in EV adoption. Together, we hope to better equip both plug-in electric and full battery electric vehicle drivers for success. Adam Gromis, Uber’s global lead on sustainability and environmental impact: "What we’ve learned from drivers is that they love not paying for gas and giving their riders a quiet, smooth, efficient, high-tech ride. But any EV driver is trying to operate this technology in a world that’s not built for them.” "Starting today, riders will get a push notification alerting them when they’re matched with an EV driver. But passengers won’t be able to choose to ride in an EV" says curbed.com: "Currently, Uber offers the option for riders to choose an electric vehicle in some European cities (where it’s called Uber Green), but this is only offered in cities which already have the number of EVs and density of charging infrastructure to support the feature."   PORTABLE BATTERY PACKS TO RESCUE YOU FROM FLAT BATTERY "A recently developed totally portable Electric Vehicle (EV) recharge system designed to enable a stranded EV driver who has a depleted high voltage battery to receive a charge at roadside for a short period of time and thus allowing the EV "self-recover" from a roadside breakdown flat battery incident" reports ElectricVehicle Research.com: " a roadside attending rescue patrol can simply plug in the battery EV, wait for around 10-15 minutes and effectively the EV can then drive off to the nearest fixed location EV charge station. The great feature of the Mobile Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (MEVSE) design is in the capability of the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) 48 volt battery pack to be re-charged from the standard rescue vehicle on-board existing 12 volt charging system."   https://www.electricvehiclesresearch.com/articles/14549/mobile-ev-charger-that-self-charges-as-recovery-vehicle-is-driving   SOLAREDGE UNVEILS EV CHARGING STATION AT INTERSOLAR EUROPE SolarEdge Technologies is unveiling its residential electric vehicle [EV] charging station this week at Intersolar Europe, in Munich. Following the recent debut of its EV-charging, single-phase inverter, SolarEdge will now also provide a standalone EV charger. Check out PV Magazine for more details. They say: "The new EV charger will be integrated into SolarEdge’s smart energy suite, to support increased energy independence. With the EV charger offering management in SolarEdge’s monitoring platform, EV charging can be easily controlled and programmed."   SP GROUP TO BUILD SINGAPORE'S LARGEST PUBLIC EV CHARGING NETWORK SP Group (SP) has today announced its plans to build Singapore's largest public Electric Vehicle (EV) charging network, in its bid to accelerate EV adoption in Singapore" as per SGCarMart: "By 2020, SP will build 500 charging points islandwide, located at shopping malls, residential areas, business parks and industrial sites, accessible by all members of the public. These charging points will also be compatible with all EV models. The first batch of 30 charging points will be in operation by the end of 2018. The islandwide network will be fully compliant with Singapore's national charging standards and comprise both AC and DC chargers, with power ratings ranging from 22kW to 50kW." Access will be via an app to initiate a charge and receive updates on its status, as well as to make payment.   COMMUNITY New followers. Hope to speak to Phil Roberts from Electric Future tomorrow. Thursday 24th May 2018. NEW BATTERY TECH FOR AUDI E-TRON SUPERCAR There's no doubt right now at the top of the EV tree is the Tesla Roadster coming soon and the Rimac C_Two. But Audi has a plan to change that. Audi’s global boss of product and technology communications, Peter Oberndorfer, confirmed to motoring.com.au that a rival to the monstrously powerful 800kW/1600Nm Rimac has been discussed. “We consider everything at the moment but I personally believe we need a little bit more battery development [for an extreme EV supercar],” said the Audi technology executive, singling out solid-state batteries as a possible solution. “Because if you go very fast you need a lot of battery and don’t want to spend three days going from the Nurburgring to Munich or the other way around,” he said, highlighting the fact the 550km trip would require frequent recharging with current the level of lithium-ion battery technology. The e-tron Quattro is the first of their EV's coming, the first of four. He continued: “I think lithium-ion will develop [further efficiency gains] but not very significantly. Our development boss Peter Mertens is speaking of solid-state batteries, which are still a few years away, but I think it would be an advantage if it will be developed, so that batteries are getting lighter and need less space.” https://www.motoring.com.au/new-battery-tech-for-audi-e-tron-supercar-112759/   BMW X5 390HP PHEV NEXT YEAR Gabriel Nice and BMW Blog is excited for the new BMW X5. Saying: "With everyone focusing on SUVs these days and since hybrid models are in big demand, BMW decided to do something about the iPerformance model in the X5 range as well. The BMW X5 xDrive40e will be replaced next year" So the likely combo is a 2 liter gas engine producing 250hp couple with a powerful motor. "What will change though will be the electric motor and the batteries. BMW will use next-gen batteries on all its upcoming EVs and PHEVs and that implies a longer range. Chip in the lower overall weight of the X5 and we’re hoping to see a real-life pure EV range of about 30 miles. If all that turns out exactly as we expect it to, remains to be seen, but the new X5 is definitely going to be a popular choice." http://www.bmwblog.com/2018/05/23/bmw-g05-x5-to-get-390-hp-plug-in-hybrid-version-next-year/   WATCH AS TESLA MODEL 3 BATTERY IS REMOVED AND DISASSEMBLED You wait years for a car and then you wreck it, that's not the fairytale story any Model 3 owners would tell. But as InsideEVs picked up on EVTV have a Model 3 battery pack from a salvage auction. Domenick says: "Before the pack is divorced from the car’s chassis, we learn one of the things that separate it from the energy box found beneath the Model S: it’s not designed with the battery swapping as a future possibility, it a lot more difficult to actually disconnect and extricate it from its snug home. The differences don’t stop there, either. Unlike the S, and pretty much every other electric vehicle we’ve seen disassembled, the Model 3 has its AC charger and DC to DC converter inside of the battery pack. Typically, those are components found under the hood. There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach. On one hand, it might speed up the car assembly process. On the the other, if one of these components goes bad, the time and cost to fix will be elevated." Check out the link to InsideEVs in the show notes to watch the video or Jehu Garcia has a 9min summary. I have a two hour train journey to work tomorrow, i'm definitely watching the whole thing. And i can't wait for whatever commuter sits next to me to look at my phone and think is he watching a car battery being taken apart FOR AN HOUR? Yep. https://insideevs.com/watch-as-tesla-model-3-battery-is-removed-and-disassembled/amp/   FAST CHARGING CURVES One of my favourite bloggers is Pedro at Push EV's, he doesn't post too much and when does it's always something really interesting. And now he's taking apart a post by charging company Fastned who plugged in a range of EVs and measured the charge speeds. So they took the LEAF 24, 30 and 40's, and it's interesting to look at the graph and see the 30kWh LEAF hangs onto almost 50kW charge speed all the way up to 80% SOC before dropping off. The new LEAF 40kWh however falls off a cliff at 60% SOC falling down 20-30kW speeds. They do the same for the BMW i3 22kWh and 33kWh versions with the original gen car because much more conservative with charge speeds. The Hyundai IONIQ was plugged into their new 175kW chargers and it blitzed it until 80% SOC. The original eGolf would take a higher speed up to 75% SOC but then throttles the speed to protect the battery, whereas the new eGolf 36kWh charges slightly slower but goes past 80% SOC before the drop off in speed is much more gentle.   I'll put a link in the show notes, and on Twitter. https://pushevs.com/2018/05/21/fast-charging-curves/   TOYOTA THINKS CONVENTIONAL HYBRIDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVS AND PHEVS Toyota have been electrifying cars longest than most, with the Prius, but they're setting out their stall in the form of hybrids. CarScoops says that "Speaking with Wards Auto, Toyota’s executive general manager of their powertrain division said “We believe that hybrids will come ahead of full electrics” although the company recognizes that some companies are going straight to EVs. Shizuo Abe went on to say “We believe that our biggest weapon for meeting fuel-efficiency and CO2 regulations, not just in Europe but globally, will continue to be hybrids.” "Abe went on to say the biggest problem with electric vehicles is lithium-ion batteries because they’re expensive, large and heavy. He also noted their “deterioration characteristics” which is a reference to how the batteries lose capacity as they age and complete hundreds of charging cycles."   EVS MUST BE DESIGNED GROUND-UP Tata Technologies’ MD and CEO Warren Harris has been speaking about how the company's expertise can help OEMs utilise technologies for connected vehicles, hybrids and EVs. "Electric cars must be designed from ground-up – simply retrofitting existing car bodies with new batteries and components won’t do. Newer, cheaper, more efficient batteries will have to be manufactured. Green mobility is no longer just a buzzword – it is becoming more and more of a norm these days in a world which is looking to become increasingly greener, more connected and less manual. The industry has moved to make cars more efficient by leveraging technology that can effectively cut down emissions. Mobility is increasingly becoming more sustainable with regulations providing a solid backbone. Attitudes towards emissions are changing with governments and industries globally working towards solutions to cut down emissions from combustion engines.  As a veteran organisation in providing engineering services for complete vehicle development and one of the leading engineering partners to OEMs, start-ups in the electric vehicles sector, Tata Technologies brings market-leading expertise to help manufacturers utilise technologies for connected, hybrid and EVs." http://www.autocarpro.in/interview/warren-harris-evs-designed-ground-simply-retrofitting-existing-car-bodies-batteries-won-29523   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Friday 4th May 2018. VW BATTERY ANNOUNCEMENT GOES UNDER THE RADAR There was another big auto event and it wasn’t Tesla’s Q1 results. It was VW’s AGM. Tesla has a market capitalisation of $48.2bn. Shortly after the Q1 results and a strange earning call you and I will get onto later, VW signed battery contracts. And let me put this out there. Every single article I read today talked about Tesla losing value due to Elon Musk’s attitude on the investor call. Let me throw something your way, which might not be the whole reason, but I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere. Just after the Tesla announcement, VW Group said they have contracts on their battery supply and associated technology worth way more than previously announced. Worth DOUBLE previously announced. VW Group said they have contracts worth 40bn Euros, that’s $48bn. What did I just say Tesla was worth? That’s right, VW signed purchase contracts for just one part of their electric cars worth the whole of Tesla – autos and energy combined. My mind is a little blown. By 2025 VW will sell 3 million pure electric cars every single year, Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess told investors Thursday at the annual shareholder meeting in Berlin. VW currently makes more cars in four days than Tesla does in a year and has enormous firepower. “By 2020 we will offer our customers more than 25 new electric models and more than 20 plug-in hybrids,” Diess said. “In just a few years’ time, then, across all brands and regions, we aim to put the world’s largest fleet of electric vehicles on the road.”   KIA UNVEILS NIRO EV IN JEJU Kia Motors took us by surprise yesterday by unveiling the pure BEV version of its Niro crossover, at the fifth "Electric Vehicle Expo" on the resort island of Jeju. Korea’s second largest carmaker showed off its Niro alongside the Niro PHEV and the Soul EV. The Niro is interesting because many people went gaga for the Hyundai Kona earlier this year, particularly the long range version with a 64kWh LGChem pack, with thermal management, and although the price isn’t known it won’t be Tesla prices. And now it's sister company Kia to take the spotlight. The Niro has the same parts, so can do 380 kilometres on a single charge of the 64kWh pack or 240 km on the smaller 39.2 kWh battery. Also, for Kia prices you get front collision avoidance, lane keeping assist and highway driving assist systems. Last year Kia sold 23,647 Niro hybrids and plug-in hybrid models. Kia plans to begin selling the Niro EV in the domestic market sometime soon after July, having received more than 5,000 pre-orders for the Niro EVs in February. Both Hyundai and Kia models will be supply restricted for a long time.      GO INSIDE THE RIMAC FACTORY FOR A CLOSER LOOK CNET has posted a video of the Rimac factory. They say: "The Rimac C Two promises to make 1,914 horsepower and 1,696 pound-feet of torque, which should propel the car to 60 miles per hour in 1.85 seconds. Rimac estimates that the C Two's top speed will be around 258 miles per hour. While the preproduction car debuted at Geneva this year, Rimac estimates that it will be over a year before they start getting delivered to customers." I'll post a link to CNET in the show notes. they say the video offers a look into the Rimac factory and "explains how a Croatian electric hypercar startup came to source the wheels for its 2,000 hp car from a relatively small bespoke wheel company in sunny Vista, California." The video is 6mins long and if you like close up super slo-motions, you’re in for a treat.   FAREWELL FLUFFERBOT & EARNINGS CALL REACTION The Tesla earnings call was very entertaining for someone not invested in the company. Elon was tolerant at best of some of the questions, especially things he thought were dumb to ask. Some highlights… Supercharger V3 network - something along the lines of 200-250kW is ultimate for pack size and C rating. Elon is open to other car makers using the network, for a fee. Share Price - The company’s share price dropped 5% on Wednesday and slid further on Thursday, wiping more than $3.4bn off the value of the company Model Y production - set to start within 24 months, 2020 being later than a Reuters report suggested, and it won't be at Fremont. That new facility’s location hasn’t been decided yet. Semi - 2,000 reserved. They're not actively selling. Musk said they could build a 500mile truck today, and by the time it launches, they'll have 600miles cracked. Is that because all these road tests are showing the letting regen do it's work on a heavy truck is giving them more range? Or platooning? Or better battery tech we don't know about? One thing JB Straubel said, when it was pointed out Daimler said the Semi was against the laws of physics, he didn't feel Daimler understood exactly what Tesla could do with batteries. China - He also mentioned that a Gigafactory for China would also be announced soon. And every future Giga factory would have car production and battery production under one roof. Cells - Cells used in Model 3 are the highest energy density cells used in any electric vehicle. “We have achieved this by significantly reducing cobalt content per battery pack while increasing nickel content and still maintaining superior thermal stability.” He gave us an insight into why the robots had held up production of the Model 3, including a machine which was trying to automate the process of bonding some fluff on top of the battery pack to deaden the sound, which is turns out wasn’t needed anyway. And the machine couldn’t match it up in the right place, a machine Elon dubbed Flufferbot. Sadly, it had to go. In a moment of pure internet, a Flufferbot now has it’s own twitter account. And in a moment which reminded me of pure Steve Jobs, when he wanted Apple to be a private company which didn't answer to bozo analysts (although I think analysts are a fine bunch of folk) Elon let rip. He cut off one question and then, after another, took a 14 second pause and went to a young YouTuber who seems to have found his way onto the call by way of a campaign to ask one question for retail investors. Elon kept him on for TWELVE questions. So established media and analysts got upset because their exclusive club had been gate-crashed and they had a good moan online today. Bernstein: "Beneath the bizarre theatrics, however, we see Tesla's Q1 as in-line with expectations on most metrics, including revenues, gross margins, and free cash flow." Morgan Stanley: "Irrespective of the Tesla CEO's annoyance with the genre of questions he was receiving from the analyst community, we note that an important part of Tesla's success has been its relationship with the capital markets in funding its ambitious plans." JP Morgan: "We expect TSLA to fall today after CEO Elon Musk dismissed multiple analyst questions as 'dry' and 'boring' (including questions probing what we feel are key topics, such as profitability of the Model 3 and the company's capital requirements)." Piper Jaffray: " The unorthodox behaviour sparked an after-hours sell-off. We still recommend TSLA, but in the next few months especially, we would expect significant volatility." Baird: "Ignore the noise and focus on metrics. TSLA reported solid results and is successfully ramping Model 3 vehicle and battery production" Nomura: "No shareholder wants to see a CEO lose his patience over important, albeit mundane questions" Evercore ISI: ""'Wow' is the only way to describe the Tesla Q1 call which was unlike anything we have heard before."   NEW SWEDISH CAR POLICIES EXPECTED TO BOOST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET SHARE IN SWEDEN Zachary at Clean Technica has picked up on a story about new tax in Sweden from July which will penalise gas and diesel, whilst plug ins get a boost. In the first three years of owning an ICE car based on CO2 emissions. Sweden has 6.1% of new vehicle registrations being plug ins, and previous 5 year exemption to vehicle tax is now completely removed and zero emission vehicles get a bonus up to 25% of the list price, which is up to $6,700, for something like a Nissan LEAF. Whereas buying a BMW i3 REX gets you $5,600 bonus.   ENPHASE REPORTS ‘DECENT’ Q1 2018 EARNINGS AS CFO RESIGNS And the last story today, a bit of solar. First up Enphase, makers of micro-inverters. Which particularly interest me, I don't have solar at the moment and really want to start adding some. However I also want to cashflow it, and also want to build up with some on the garage roof before any on the house. So micro-inverters would be an interesting way to scale up if i get some solar this year. I like that each panel can generate grid-ready AC power. Their latest results were $70m of revenue in Q1 18 and their cash balance was almost double, largely due to private equity investment in the quarter. They shipped 611,000 micro inverters last year. The IQ7, their latest model now available in the US and UK, soon Germany and Austria. "Unlike the rest of its inverters, the IQ 8 platform is designed to support both grid-tied and off-grid applications, supported by the company’s Ensemble software" say GreenTechMedia.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Report On Long Term Battery Degradation, Luxury EVs From Pininfarina And Maybach | 16 April 2018

EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Monday 16th April 2018. The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 15th April, shows 16,303 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,785 Model 3’s being built per week. BATTERY DEGRADATION Battery degradation is still largely the unknown long term question mark hanging over EV’s. And that’s not because there’s anything wrong with the technology, in general, it’s just the modern era or electric cars are a few years old rather than far longer for ICE cars. In Holland a group of Tesla fans on their forum are gathering data from 350 Teslas and the results have just been updated. The previous results were already very positive but now it seems there is less than 10% degradation after 160,000 miles. Electrek reports: “The data clearly shows that for the first 50,000 miles (100,000 km), most Tesla battery packs will lose about 5% of their capacity, but after the 50,000-mile mark, the capacity levels off and it looks like it could be difficult to make a pack degrade by another 5%. The trend line currently suggests that the average battery pack could cycle through over 300,000 km (186,000) before coming close to 90% capacity” One of the cars reporting into this study has done just over 280,000kms and it has just under 90% battery remaining. Of course we don’t know how many Tesla’s were supercharged every day and which ones were slow charged up to 70% diligently. Although EVs may be relatively new, the 18650 cells which make up the Model S battery packs are quite established now, indeed Tesla only chose that technology when they first started because it was the cost-effective proven choice. The temperature management is surely the key to this, even recently the Nissan LEAF without any thermal management has come under fire with people wanting to rapid charge it multiple times in a row. One commenter summed it up nicely: “By 160,000 miles on various gasoline engine cars I have owned in my life and (not including regular oil/filter changes), I've had to replace: a manifold gasket, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, dropped valve, muffler, and a head gasket. Granted, this wasn't all on the same car. But it is something you will NEVER have to replace on any electric car. To me, 10 percent battery degradation seems acceptable as a trade off.” The next things which spring to mind, how long will a battery actually last? Certainly longer than the other parts on the car I’d hazard to predict. And longer than the car itself probably, depending on where you live. What does this also mean for 2nd life batteries? Well it’s good from the perspective that they will be usable, but bad in that not so many cars will have them to spare.   PININFARINA EV “Plans are in place to launch high-end electric cars under the Pininfarina name” reports MotorAuthority. “The new Automobili Pininfarina was launched on Friday in Rome, where Pininfarina parent company Mahindra was competing in this weekend's Formula E Championship round. The cars will be luxurious, highly advanced and offer extreme performance. The first model arrives this year as the production version of the H2 Speed concept that was shown at the 2016 Geneva auto show. The H2 Speed is a track-only electric supercar that swaps a battery for a hydrogen fuel cell stack, and just 12 will be built. But confirmed Friday, a much more potent model will arrive in 2020 to serve as the flagship of the brand. It will reportedly use technology developed by Rimac as well as Mahindra's Formula E team”. Pininfarina claims that the 2020 hypercar will be capable of 0-62mph in less than two seconds, rivalling the next-generation Tesla Roadster and the Rimac C_Two. 0-186mph is targeted in less than 12 seconds, while a top speed of 249mph has been touted. A production run of around 90 examples is planned for now, with a 311 mile range. TopGear point out “It’ll also come with Level 3+ autonomy, too: not fully autonomous, and the driver will be needed for certain conditions, but a step up from simple lane-keep assist and radar cruise, for example”   MAYBACH EV Mercedes-Maybach revealed a new teaser for what looks like a concept for a new EV. The car is set to debut in just a few weeks at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show. This might be the Maybach SUV we reported on a few weeks back”: say AutoBlog: “It's difficult to make out too many details, but it definitely looks different than the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 that we've seen floating around for the past couple of years. A close-up shot of the steering wheel shows the soft blue glow that Mercedes has put on the EQ-branded concept cars. Other images show clean white leather, rose gold trim and a pair of seats flanking a flower-encrusted panel.”   WHEN YOU REALLY NEED A BIG MAC And finally, even when you’re testing one of the worlds best EV sports cars, you still need a Big Mac or 20 nugs. InsideEVs report a Porsche Mission E was seen at a drive thru McDonald’s. They have translated the video description: “During a night refueling near Stuttgart, we ran into a Porsche Mission E Test Mule. During the difficult testing of hungry – the driver went for Big Mac. Thanks to the front line, he couldn’t get away. Check out the video and photos of the prototype model that is likely to unseat Tesla from the throne.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Sunday 15th April 2018.   The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 14th April, shows 16,020 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,332 Model 3’s being built per week.   HYUNDAI IONIQ COULD BE GETTING BIGGER The Hyundai IONIQ is not easy to get hold of, there’s a long waiting list but it’s worth it. Not only is it a great family car but, despite it’s modest 28kWh usable battery. That’s not a criticism because in tests with its peers – the eGolf, new LEAF etc, it can often outperform them on range. However something I’ve seen more of online is complaints over it not being big enough for some markets, and Brinkwire say: “Hyundai has been made aware of this and it probably explains why the carmaker has been caught developing a long-wheelbase variant of the vehicle. The added length to the wheelbase will help free up more room inside the cabin and rumours are also indicating on the use of a larger battery with the car to take advantage of the space.”   TOP 5 ELECTRIC CARS IN THE WORLD Vanda Dendrobium. Price is £1m. It can accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in a ridiculous 2.7 seconds and the top speed figure is above 320 km/h. Faraday Future FF 91. Faraday Future are said to be back on track with new funding. The FF 91 has three electric motors that make 1050 hp and is capable of doing 0-100 km/h in 2.39 seconds. The FF 91 also features torque vectoring and four-wheel steering to ensure it can corner hard Nio EP9. From China, EP9 uses in-wheel motors like the Rimac C_Two, aerodynamically designed to generate more downforce than Formula 1 car, with an active rear spoiler. 0-100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. Tesla Roadster. It has one electric motor at the front and two at the back. Tesla hasn't revealed how much horsepower it makes but has claimed that will do 0-96 km/h 1.9 seconds, 0-160 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 400 km/h. Rimac C_Two. It has four in-wheel electric motors that make a combined power of 1888 hp. Range between charges is 640 km and does 0-100 km/h in 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 413 km/h.   TESLA REWORKING SOME PARTTS CNBC claim to have more dirt of Tesla, this is getting boring now, and say: “Tesla is struggling to manage and fix a significant volume of flawed or damaged parts from its suppliers, sending some to local machine shops for rework, according to several current and former Tesla The company said it also makes adjustments to the design of some parts after receiving them from suppliers. Evidence of Tesla's rework burden stands in plain view in San Jose, California, less than a half-hour drive from the company's main factory in Fremont. Towering racks and stacks of boxes emblazoned with Tesla's name stood in the lot beside a sheet metal and machine shop called JL Precision earlier this month.” Or you could say that Tesla has it’s sight sets on standards higher than others are willing to accept, and they want only the best, so they’re ensuring all the parts are perfect before using them to build with. Or you could remember that all car companies are known to do this rather than send a part back if it’s not up to standard. Or you could even just say those parts were being sent for evaluation or quality control. However it’s too easy to write just another Tesla bashing article.   AUTOSPIES CLAIMS A BMW i1 IS COMING “While the BMW i3 may not receive a replacement, the German automaker is allegedly planning an all-new model to replace it, dubbed the i1” says Autospies. “Despite what its name suggests, the BMW i1 would actually be larger than the current i3 but slightly smaller than the next-generation 1-Series, Spain’s Motor.es reports. It is claimed that this all-new model will be based on the same platform as the Mini Cooper Electric and like its British cousin, receive power from a single electric motor powering the front wheels. If this is the case, the i1 should offer a similar range and performance specs to the Mini which, at this stage, still remain a mystery.”   NEW HAMPSHIRE EV OWNERS GET OVERNIGHT DEAL And finally, on the subject of charging and grid demand, “Electric vehicle owners in areas served by New Hampshire Electric Cooperative will be able to get cheap power for recharging their cars, as long as they do it at night or on weekends” according to the Concord Monitor: “NHECannounced Friday that it would become the state’s first utility to offer time-of-day pricing, although only for charging electric cars during off-peak hours. The idea is to reduce the burden that electric vehicles place on the power grid, without discouraging them as a new source of business. They are going to be a growing source of electric load, and it’s new demand mostly,” said Seth Wheeler, spokesman for NHEC. “We don’t want to have to build new power plants to meet this new need. If they charge during periods of low demand, there’s plenty of power and we can avoid the need to build generation.”   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Thursday 12th April 2018. As a treat, or punishment depending on your point of view, you get two podcasts today for the price of one. And as that price is free, I’ll give you a full refund if you’re not satisfied! As well as the news, you can hear the first in a series of shows the infrastructure around electric cars. We talk about cars a lot, but what’s it going to take to make the whole ecosystem work. So for the first episode we head to the maker of some of the worlds most luxurious cars – Bentley.   Work starts this week at on a giant solar carport, which will be the UK's largest when complete, at 2.7MW. The company behind it is called FlexiSolar and they'll be fitting 10,000 panels to frames which will shelter almost 1,400 car parking spaces at Bentley’s manufacturing headquarters near Crewe.   The carport will take Bentley’s on-site solar capacity to 7.7MW having also installed 5MW of rooftop solar in 2013. And on our special edition today, we talk to Adam Goves from the company. If I do say so, i think it's a fascinating chat about using car parks as power stations for electric cars...   So if you are thinking of listening, i'm publishing the interview a few minutes after this show, so it will show up in your podcast feed and on YouTube right next. I do hope you enjoy it, and i've got more interviews coming soon.   PAGANI DEVELOPING ELECTRIC HYPERCAR At the recent Geneva Motor Show, Horacio Pagani, whose car company bears his name, committed to electrification: “There is electric-car research already ongoing,” Pagani said. “That is not something you can just pretend not to see, that everyone is developing something in this direction. The management is already organizing the company to have a division specifically for electric cars. Already, by the end of 2018, the idea is to have a section where electric cars can be developed and tested. “The technologies and safety standards you need are completely different from any combustion-engine car production—we’re talking about 800 volts—so all of the training and the technicians will have to be up to the standards to work on such a vehicle.” https://www.caranddriver.com/news/pagani-starts-work-on-an-electric-supercar   BOLT SOFTWARE UPDATE According to GMAuthority: “General Motors has officially responded to reports of isolated battery cell failure in 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV models. In response to the possible issue, the automaker will roll out a software update for Bolt EV that dealerships will perform free of charge. GM told InsideEVs that the recall is not a safety recall, but asked that all owners participate in the software update. Some owners have reported battery cell failure that leaves the Bolt EV without drive power. After analyzing OnStar data, GM noted the issue seems isolated to very early production units of Bolt EV. http://gmauthority.com/blog/2018/04/gm-issues-software-update-over-potential-battery-cell-failure-in-some-2017-bolt-ev/   DO YOU WANT TO SOUND LIKE AN ICE? From those fast Pagani’s, to a record breaking Tesla Roadster Gen2, to the crazy Rimac C_Two, electric cars aren’t short of performance. But what about sound? It seems like some people want the old engine noise. Soundracer make a gadget that you wire into your electric car to make it sound like your choice of angry combustion engines on the inside and the outside. https://newatlas.com/soundracer-ev-engine-sound-eveess/54140/   FUTURE AUDI PHEV SPOTTED Spy shots of the performance crossover SUV the Audi SQ3 which is being built on the SQB platform. And that of course opens the door to plug in and electric powertrains. Autoguide say “The current Q3 is the oldest model in Audi’s lineup, so expect some fairly significant changes, especially since the segment has gotten a bit more crowded.” http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2018/04/2020-audi-sq3-surfaces-for-the-first-time.html   MITSUBISHI COULD PRODUCE PERFORMANCE EV Don Swearington, chief operating officer and executive vice president of Mitsubishi Motors North America, told Digital Trends in an interview published on Tuesday that the future is wide open for electrified cars. He made it clear that Mitsubishi will look at both plug-in and pure battery-electric vehicles. On the topic of electrified performance vehicles, Swearington specifically said, “there’s a great opportunity. “I think our engineers in Japan would love to develop something like that,” he added. Read more at HybridCars.com http://www.hybridcars.com/mitsubishi-sees-opportunity-electric-performance-vehicles/   CHINA RELAXES RULES Until now, if any car company wanted to produce their models in China, they were looking at a joint venture with a domestic company. Well now, according to scmp.com: “Global carmakers received a double dose of good news from China’s President Xi Jinping on Tuesday: a reduction in import tariffs and a raised investment cap with regards to mainland-based factories.  New energy carmakers such as Tesla are set to become the top beneficiaries of a relaxation by Beijing on foreign ownership in the automobiles sector”. Coming first to mind is Tesla who have long wanted to make cars in China but not wanted to sign over half the factory to a local manufacturer. http://www.scmp.com/business/global-economy/article/2141148/xi-puts-chinas-car-industry-top-gear-plans-raise-foreign   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Sunday 1st April 2018. RIMAC C_TWO SELLS OUT Well we first saw the second attempt Rimac have made at building an electric hypercar at the Geneva Motor Show, and now they’ve just about sold out, according to Autocar. The specs are eye-watering, probably literally, can you imagine how it would feel to floor it and get 0-60 in 1.85 seconds. And it goes to show the crazy advances in electric cars, that people are now getting more interested in the 0-100mph time rather than just 60. Who even wants to get to just 60! That all important 0-100 time is 4.3 seconds. Those figures undercut the new Tesla Roadster however the price certainly doesn’t And what if you keep your foot in? It will get you to 258mph! RImac already have the production facilities so the good news is it will start to be made soon, definitely in 2018, with delivery by 2020. And unlike the first Rimac, of which 10 were made including the one Richard Hammond used to celebrate bonfire night early, this time they’re making 150. And if you join the dots then yes, that means there are 150 people in the world who see the car revealed and say “sure, here’s my $2.1 million”! As for tech, and speed, you get 8 cameras, lidar, 6 radar sensors, 12 ultrasonic sensors and GPS. And you know we told you yesterday about the new Lincoln Aviator which unlocks and starts with your phone? Well that’s SO yesterday. Literally! The Rimac C_Two using facial recognition to unlock and start the car. So good luck stealing one. And if you can’t be bothered to drive one the best cars ever made, your $2.1m buys you Level 4 autonomous driving. Level 4 vehicles are "designed to perform all safety-critical driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip." However, it's important to note that this is limited to the "operational design domain (ODD)" of the vehicle—meaning it does not cover every driving scenario. There is an electric motor at each wheel and some very clever technology to manage the power output of each for all-wheel drive safety. And the part which I still think is witchcraft – the front axle works on a single gear, but the rear motors have a two speed carbon-clutch gearbox.   ELECTRIC CAR PARADE FOR NEW YORK Now that those pesky journalists are out of the way, the New York Auto Show can open for real, and comedian Tracy Morgan and Nelson Piquet Jr will led a parade to officially open the show, in electric vehicles. A fully electric Formula E car led the fleet of EVs along 11th to the convention centre on New York’s West Side. It’s the first time an official Formula E car has driven on Manhatten’s roads. The parade also featured the Jaguar I-PACE plus a range of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles including: Toyota Prius Prime, Chrysler Pacifica PEH, Nissan Leaf, Honda Clarity Plug-in, Volvo XC60 PHEV, MINI Countryman PHEV, Chevy Bolt EV, Kia Soul EV, and others.   TESLA BACK IN GERMANY In a week when Tesla couldn’t seemed to catch a break, from the stock price to recalling 123,000 Model S’s, some good news came through from Germany. Last year the country removed Tesla cars from the official list of models eligible for purchase incentives. This was because of an article which accused Tesla of not actually selling the base model car below the 60,000Euro price limit. Tesla successfully argued that they have in fact delivered plenty of base cars below that price, the whole situation if strange that they were banned for selling them with inventives for three months. So it makes you wonder, in the land of the diesel car which is behind Tesla making EVs, why a German article would print that when it’s not true, AND why the authorities would believe it. Obviously hard to know why, the land of the diesel car which is behind Tesla making EVs, it ever happened in the first place. Did I mentioned that already? Maybe it’s because the incentive scheme is partly funded by the German car industry. Ahhh. OK.   MODEL X AUTOPILOT CRASH However onto the sad subject of the Model X crash in California in which the driver was killed. We learned earlier this week that the metal crash barrier which is meant to be there before the concrete, and absorb any impact, was a lot shorter than it had been in earlier pictures. And according to the Telegraph: “Tesla said on Friday that a Tesla Model X involved a fatal crash in California last week had activated its Autopilot system, raising new questions about the semi-autonomous system that handles some driving tasks. The electric-car company also said vehicle logs from the accident showed no action had been taken by the driver soon before the crash and that he had received earlier warnings to put his hands on the wheel. The driver had about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view of the concrete divider with the crushed crash attenuator, but the vehicle logs show that no action was taken," Tesla said. The statement did not say why the Autopilot system apparently did not detect the concrete   TESLA MAPS BEING ROLLED OUT And according to Electrek, the new Tesla navigation update is being slowly released around the world. The highlights I’ve picked out from their story: it now uses it’s own maps using open source data from MapBox and Valhalla; look out for software update 2018.12 for the beta of Tesla Maps; faster routing and more accurate estimated arrival times are promised. Musk said that with the old system, they were “stuck with legacy 3rd party black box code and stale data”. Now with the new system based on open source modules, they will be able to improve on it over time.   SOLID STATE IN NO STATE SAY NISSAN Magical batteries always seem to be on the horizon, despite incredible cars like Teslas running perfectly fine on established tech like 18650 cells, but despite that some people always think we’re one battery breakthrough away from what’s really needed to get EVs to catch on. But one of those isn’t Nissan, who are downplaying the potential of solid state batteries. Takao Asami, Nissan's senior vice president for research and advanced engineering, said he doesn't expect solid-state technology to be ready for serious deployment before the middle of the next decade. Among the obstacles are cost and manufacturing acumen, he said. "All solid-state batteries, roughly speaking, are still in the initial phase of research. So according to my feeling, it's practically a zero at this stage," Asami said at Nissan's world headquarters here south of Tokyo. Solid-state batteries would replace the liquid electrolyte used in lithium ion batteries with a solid substance that allows for improved energy density, weight, safety and charging time. "It's working in the lab," Asami conceded. "But if we make it bigger and put it in a vehicle, drive for several kilometers and ensure safety and cost performance, compared to a lithium ion battery, we don't have a comparable scenario yet. "We still need several breakthroughs." However Toyota think they’ll be ready in the early 2020s. Speaking on the subject in October, Toyota Executive Vice President Didier Leroy said, "We believe our solid-state battery technology can be a game changer with the potential to dramatically improve driving range."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Sunday 11th March 2018. TESLA KEEPS YOU LEGAL A Tesla driver claims he dodged a traffic fine by arguing his Tesla Model S was driving itself in semi-autonomous Autopilot mode at the time he was pulled over in Los Angeles. Joseph Mourad, is a music producer and DJ, and said that his violation for using his mobile phone whilst driving, and also driving too fast, were dropped because he could show Autopilot was keeping him legal. However, LA courts said the ticket had to be dropped: “The reason the ticket was dismissed was because the officer didn’t show up.” NEW CHINESE VENERE Autoblog reported that a new full-electric offering from Shanghai-based LVCHI Auto. It's called the Venere. They said: “The four-door four-seater comes with some eye-popping performance claims, including more than 1,000 horsepower from its 100kWh battery and four electric motors — two each at the rear and front — that each generate 185 kilowatts and a whopping 1,135 pound-feet of torque. It also boasts a 2.5-second 0-62 mph time, a top speed of 177 miles per hour and a driving range of 405 miles on a single charge. We'll believe these claims when the car proves them.” Like all concepts, you can say what you want (within reason, if you eventually want to be taken seriously) but here’s to another EV coming out of China. RIMAC PROVE THEY HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR To start today I’d like to pass on a few more details about the Rimac C_Two, which we all first saw earlier this week at the Geneva Motor Show. Perhaps unfairly to Rimac, even though they built a stellar Concept_One, in the wider world they’re more famous for Richard Hammond launching one off a hillside in Switzerland and seeing how many times you could roll it over before it set fire to itself. It was one of 10 they built. I remember watching the owner on a video with Hammond after the crash, and he seemed remarkably relaxed and joking about one tenth of his company’s output being turned some charred battery remains. However proving he really does have a sense of humour, the Rimac C_Two has a fire extinguisher, with a label on the strap: “in case of hill climb, extinguish fire”. Spec recap: 1,888 horsepower, 1,696 pound-feet (2,300 Newton-meters) of torque, 0-60 mph in just 1.85 seconds (with a rolling start, but we’ll let them off) and a top speed of 256 mph (412 kph) limited only by the rubber of the tyres. And in case you thought it was a one lap wonder, the 120kWh battery is good for 404 miles (605 kilometres). When it’s not on fire. This time there will be 150 of them, so join in line behind me. E-TRON ORDERS BEING TAKEN An electric car which IS a lot closer to being on your driveway is the Audio e-tron. Electric Cars Report says pre-orders are now underway here in the UK: “The £1,000 deposit towards the first ever series production full EV from Audi can be placed online at audi.co.uk. When the priority ordering system is activated, depositors will immediately be informed of the final UK pricing and specification position and of the options available, enabling them to submit an order via their preferred Audi Centre before the car becomes publicly available later this year. The £1,000 deposit is offset against the purchase price, and is fully refundable at any time.” Given the deposit is refundable, I’m tempted to go through the system just to find out more! Although my wife would kill me if I did accidentally buy an e-tron.  UPS WANT MORE THAN A SEMI We know that UPS are early supporters of the Tesla Semi Truck with 125 coming their way but UPS also want to build their own EVs from the group up. They’ll be doing it with the help of Workhorse. Now, New Atlas say: “Workhorse too has a number of future-facing electric vehicle concepts in the pipeline, including drones, a range-extended pickup truck, a flying taxi and also a delivery van that launches drones from the roof. But the new partnership will have it work with UPS to build a new electric truck from the ground, up tailored specifically to its purposes. It says the resulting trucks will have a range of 100 miles (160 km), suitable for carting goods around cities while creating zero emissions and minimal noise.” Delivery will be by day and they plan to overnight charge.  MERCEDES WALLBOX Mercedes have some gorgeous electric cars in the pipleline like the EQC, to rival the Jaguar I-PACE and the Audi e-tron, but they want you to have their own home charger as well. This time the naming is nothing exotic. In fact it’s not even that imaginative. In fact, we think the intern got the job of naming it. The charging box you’ll put on your wall is to be called The Wallbox. Charge rates will be up to 22kW, it can do two EV’s at once and of course will be super connected as everything is with Internet Of Things. Mercedes say: “The intelligent Advanced and Twin wallboxes are internet-capable, with a built-in electricity meter and allow access control by RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). This makes it possible to manage several vehicles of different users, which is especially attractive for fleets – as well as for office communities or apartment buildings. Thanks to intelligent sharing of the charging power by local load management with up to 14 additional wallboxes, there is no need – even if several wallboxes are installed – for expensive upgrading of the existing house connection.”   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Thursday 8th March 2018. Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel.  Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow. EV TYRE TECH The 2018 Geneva International Motor Show has been dominated by headlines of the best to electrified vehicles, but Goodyear didn't want to miss out. They used the show to debut their Efficient Grip Performance with Electric Drive Technology tyre which, apart from being a bit of a mouthful, is designed for the new breed of electric vehicles. According to Goodyear, regular old tyres you'd get on an ICE car can wear up to 30% faster when fitted to an electric vehicles because in EVs we have all the torques. Cars like the BMW i3 already come with custom tyres mainly because they thinner to have less rolling resistance. And it's not just the next generation of batteries which will give us longer range, it's the rubber too. And finally there's the noise issue. For anyone who has had gone into an ICE car after being in an EV you find yourself shouting because they're so loud, well the new Goodyear's are ultra quiet too to match the cars. The say the custom tread design prevents sound waves from entering the grooves, which in turn reduces cabin noise. Also in Geneva Goodyear showed the Oxygene concept tire. The concept has a unique structure that features living moss growing within the sidewall. This open structure and the tire’s smart tread design absorb and circulate moisture and water from the road surface, allowing photosynthesis to occur and therefore releasing oxygen into the air. OK then http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/03/20180307-goodyear.html   RIMAC C UNDERSCORE TWO  The Rimac Concept One is a beast and, when it's not being set on fire by The Grand Tour, is one of the best examples of how to make an electric hypercar. Well now we've seen the Rimac C_Two at the Geneva Motor Show. They teased us with it last month but now, in the flesh, it takes your breath away. First, let's get speccy. The specs are: 4 electric motors, 1,914bhp, 0-60 in just 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 258 mph. And get this, the front two motors have one gear whilst the rear motors have two gears. What kind of witchcraft is this? The 0-184 mph stat, which is something I look for in every car I buy, is a rather lazy 11.8 seconds. Only 150 of them will be made which is disappointing because I'm sure we were all ready to sell the house, put the dog on eBay and the cat on Craigslist just to raise the cash. The battery is 120kWh, liquid cooled, which is good for 400miles unless you stamp on the electron pedal. They've also built it with Level 4 autonomous driving so, in theory, you could buy one of the greatest driving machines ever made and have it do all the fun bits. Although if you use self driving in places where it’s not legal, like here in the UK, the police will probably pull you over and send you to jail forever with nothing by memories of the time you drive a Rimac. https://www.autoblog.com/2018/03/06/rimac-c_two-electric-hypercar-almost-2-000-horsepower/   RENAULT ZOE GETS MORE MUSCLE  Car Magazine in the posted some wonderful pics of the Geneva Motor Show which I urge you to check out. Along with supercars and luxury hybrids was the new and very purple Renault Zoe ZE40 R110. The R110 moniker is a reference to the 107bhp motor which is newly upgraded to 80kw and, whilst it doesn't provide much more of a gut punch when you pull away from the light, will dramatically improve the 50-70 time and motorway driving. Oh and it's purple. So very very purple. The press pics a while ago were nice but seeing it in the flesh, it's ALL the purple. The new Zoe will also come with Android Auto and third party apps can be used including Waze, Skype and Messenger. No word on whether the charging will be any faster. Months ago on InsideEVs i read an article about future Zoe's coming with CCS socket and ability to handle up to 150kW charging. With a 40kWh battery to top up, that would be nice, but I can't find anything either way. I'm guessing not. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/renault/new-renault-zoe-2018-uk-price-specs-performance-interior/   OUTLANDER GETS A POLISH The Mitsubishi Outlander is the outrageously popular plug in hybrid which just keeps on selling in Europe. The updated version was shown at Geneva which is now cleaner, more efficient, smoother and with a more powerful motor. I don't know much about combustion engines, shock horror, but it moves from an Otto cycle to an Atkinson cycle petrol 2.4 litre unit. The important electric bits all get a bit of spit and polish with more power from the inverter, the motor, 15% battery capacity and a higher rate to discharge that power. Altogether a nice set of improvements.  https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/mitsubishi/mitsubishi-outlander-phev-my2019-news-info-tech-spec-pictures-prices/   TOYOTA OFFER AURIS WITH TWO HYBRID OPTIONS So you may know I have a love/hate relationship with Toyota. They were early with electrification and have sold a bazillion cars with a battery in, but just recently they’ve decided to throw shade at plug in cars to advance their own market lead on soft hybrids. Come on Toyota let’s all move forward to together without you starting a fight against owners of plugins and pure electric vehicles. However I do love them for cars like the Auris which sell like hotcakes, and Geneva showed up the third generation which…fanfare please…won’t have a diesel option. Instead there will be two petrol-electric versions. I love you Toyota. However no chance of a third option of a pure electric. I hate you Toyota. Not really. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/toyota/new-toyota-auris-uk-price-specs-sale-date-hybrid-engines-interior-mpg/   AUDI E-TRON MOVES FROM CONCEPT TO PROTOTYPE Audi were at Geneva with the e-tron. Not so much a concept but a protoype these days. How miffed do you think they are that the Jaguar I-PACE is taking orders whilst they're not ready yet? Journalists have been in one, although not driving one, which is what Jag were doing last December, which was three months away from launch. However all I can get from Audi is that the e-tron will start production before the end of this year. Same as the I-PACE it's compatible with rapid chargers up to 150kW. Same as the I-PACE real-world driving range of 300 miles is the claim. If only idiots like me would stop comparing it to the Jaguar which, did i mention, you can currently buy. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/the-audi-e-tron-laughs-in-the-face-of-range-anxiety/?utm_source=carthrottle-rssfeed&utm_medium=rss   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
