Shoot us a Text.Today, Paul and Kyle are coming to you live on location from Paul's office! We're talking about how Group 1 grew in 2024 through $1.3B in acquisitions, a new face on the top 5 best-selling EVs and how grassroots is trying to take Tesla down.Show Notes with links:Group 1 Automotive made waves in 2024, dropping $1.3 billion to acquire 68 dealerships across the U.S. and U.K. The move adds $3.9 billion in annual revenue and solidifies the company's aggressive expansion strategy. The acquisitions spanned six major deals from Southern California to London.Major brands acquired include Lexus, Honda, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, Porsche, Land Rover, and Audi.A key purchase was the $517 million acquisition of Inchcape's 54 U.K. stores, adding $2.7 billion in revenue. The company also sold off select U.S. dealerships, including a Buick-GMC store in Massachusetts and a Subaru dealership in New York.CEO Daryl Kenningham: “Our ability to acquire outstanding brands in desirable markets is because we perform well on the OEM eligibility metrics.”After a rocky 2024, the Volkswagen ID.4 is making a triumphant comeback. Following production halts due to a recall, sales of the electric SUV are now skyrocketing, making it the third best-selling EV in the U.S. last month.VW sold 4,979 ID.4s in January 2025, marking a 653% increase from the previous year. The ID.4 now ranks #3 in U.S. EV sales, trailing only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3.The top five best-selling EVs—Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, VW ID.4, Tesla Cybertruck, and Honda Prologue—accounted for 54% of total EV sales.Over 102,200 EVs were sold in the U.S. in January, up 30% year-over-year.VW is offering aggressive discounts on 2024 models, with leases as low as $189/month.Tesla showrooms across the U.S. are becoming flashpoints for protests as demonstrators rally against Elon Musk's actions. The #TeslaTakedown movement has gained traction, with over 65 events scheduled through March.Protesters in New York's Meatpacking District hurled insults at passing Teslas, calling them “uncool” and “major loser” cars. The movement took off on Bluesky, a social media competitor to Musk's X, and has since gone viral.Demonstrations started in Maine, Massachusetts, New York, California, and Colorado, but have now spread internationally. The protests lack a central leader but have been amplified by legislative advocacy groups like Indivisible and Rise and Resist.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

London's blue-chip index was down 33 points at 7,962 with oil groups BP and Shell under pressure after oil prices eased back after spiking on Iran's missile attack on Israel. Recruiter PageGroup turned lower as it warned firms are not converting final interviews into job offers and trading is slowing as a result. The UK is seeing no sign of an upturn it added. Car dealer Inchcape meanwhile is to sell its UK Retail operations to Group 1 Automotive for a cash consideration of approximately £346 million. Today we're going to talk about the company that distributes your Toyota and Suzuki cars!  While known as an automotive distributor, our guest Inchcape was started in 1847 when two merchants from Scotland formed a general merchanting partnership.  By the next few decades, the firm became one of the early adopters of the internal combustion engine transport revolution, as well as one of the first importers of motorcars into Asia.  Its modern presence in Asia Pacific started in 1967 with the acquisition of Borneo Motors, a company founded in 1925 to distribute vehicles in Singapore.  Since then, Inchcape APAC has expanded significantly, with 3,900 employees across the region. It now distributes new vehicles and parts in major markets such as Australia, Brunei, Guam, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Thailand and Singapore just to name a few.  Its portfolio of OEM brands include Toyota Motor, Subaru, Suzuki, Jaguar Land Rover, BMW, and more.  And it seems like the next couple of years would be interesting for Inchcape, after the firm signed a global strategic partnership with automotive brand GWM in June 2023 to tap what it calls the ‘enormous' potential of the Indonesian market. But what can we expect on this front?  Speaking of Indonesia, Inchcape and Indomobile also took over the Mercedez Benz business in Indonesia in April 2023. Why is this the case and how far is Indonesia a key focus area for the firm? What is Inchcape's grand plan for the region? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Ruslan Kinebas, CEO, Inchcape Asia Pacific.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

March madness had a different undertone this year as investors faced market volatility and renewed uncertainties brought upon by a regional banking crisis. The Bank of England (“BoE”) raised interest rates to 4.25% from 4% in an eleventh consecutive monthly increase. Minutes from the meeting showed that the Financial Policy Committee told policymakers before the vote that the "UK banking system maintains robust capital and strong liquidity positions," and that "the UK banking system remains resilient." Financial markets appear to expect rates to increase again amid no signs of a let-up in inflation. On a year-on-year basis, consumer prices rose to 10.4% in February, well above the consensus expectation...Stocks featured:Crest Nicholson, Inchcape and JD WetherspoonTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets.

The Inchcape Rockby Robert Southey (1774-1843)No stir in the air, no stir in the sea,The ship was still as she could be,Her sails from heaven received no motion,Her keel was steady in the ocean.Without either sign or sound of their shockThe waves flow'd over the Inchcape Rock;So little they rose, so little they fell,They did not move the Inchcape Bell. The Abbot of AberbrothokHad placed that bell on the Inchcape Rock;On a buoy in the storm it floated and swung,And over the waves its warning rung. When the Rock was hid by the surge's swell,The mariners heard the warning bell; And then they knew the perilous Rock,And blest the Abbot of Aberbrothok. The Sun in heaven was shining gay,All things were joyful on that day;The sea-birds scream'd as they wheel'd round,And there was joyaunce in their sound. The buoy of the Inchcape Bell was seenA darker speck on the ocean green;Sir Ralph the Rover walk'd his deck,And he fix'd his eye on the darker speck. He felt the cheering power of spring,It made his whistle, it made him sing; His heart was mirthful to excess,But the Rover's mirth was wickedness. His eye was on the Inchcape float;Quoth he, ‘My men, put out the boat,And row me to the Inchcape Rock,And I'll plague the Abbot of Aberbrothok.'The boat is lower'd, the boatmen row,And to the Inchcape Rock they go;Sir Ralph bent over from the boat,And he cut the Bell from the Inchcape float.Down sunk the Bell with a gurgling sound,The bubbles rose and burst around;Quoth Sir Ralph, ‘The next who comes to the RockWon't bless the Abbot of Aberbrothok.'Sir Ralph the Rover sail'd away,He scour'd the seas for many a day;And now grown rich with plunder'd store,He steers his course for Scotland's shore. So thick a haze o'erspreads the skyThey cannot see the Sun on high; The wind hath blown a gale all day,At evening it hath died away.On the deck the Rover takes his stand,So dark it is they see no land.Quoth Sir Ralph, ‘It will be lighter soon,For there is the dawn of the rising Moon.'‘Canst hear,' said one, ‘the breakers roar? For methinks we should be near the shore.'‘Now where we are I cannot tell,But I wish I could hear the Inchcape Bell.'They hear no sound, the swell is strong;Though the wind hath fallen they drift along,Till the vessel strikes with a shivering shock,?‘Oh Christ! It is the Inchcape Rock!'Sir Ralph the Rover tore his hair;He curst himself in his despair; The waves rush in on every side,The ship is sinking beneath the tide. But even in his dying fearOne dreadful sound could the Rover hear,A sound as if with the Inchcape Bell,The Devil below was ringing his knell. She married Hon. William Stonor, son of Sir Ralph Thomas Stonor, 7th Lord Camoys, in 2004. The couple have three children together. Lady Ailsa is a landscape designer who worked in international development for non-governmental organisations and works alongside her husband in the running of the house.  Stonor Park has been in the Stonor family for over 850 years, and is one of the oldest family homes to be lived in today. The first mention of Stonor is ‘Stanora Lege', or ‘stony hill', appearing in AD 774 with the first recorded family member, Robert De Stanora, living there during the late 12th Century. For the following three centuries the family prospered, acquiring lands and titles, administering lucrative wardships, farming their flocks of sheep, fighting in great battles, holding high office and marrying into powerful local families. This expansion was curtailed with Henry VIII's Act of Supremacy as the Catholic Stonors refused to accept the monarch as head of the church. This unwavering commitment to their faith came at a great cost, and by 1650 all of the Stonor estates, barring the Stonor Valley, had been sold to pay recusancy fines. After generations of lobbying, the Catholic Emancipation Act was eventually passed in 1829 at which point the 3rd Lord Camoys once more embraced government and public life. Stonor is now home to three generations of the Stonor family – the Lord and Lady Camoys reside in the recently restored 14th Century Wool House.  About the Host: Emma Rutland, The Duchess of Rutland, did not always stride the halls of stately homes. Born Emma Watkins, the Duchess grew up the daughter of a Quaker farmer, in the Welsh marsh countryside. She trained as an opera singer in the Guildhall School of Music, and worked as a successful interior designer before meeting her future husband David Manners, the 11th Duke of Rutland, at a dinner party. Their marriage in 1992 would transform Emma Watkins into the 11th Duchess of Rutland, thrusting her into the world of aristocracy, and handing her the responsibility of one of the nation's great treasures: Belvoir Castle. While simultaneously running the day to day operations of the castle, and raising five children, The Duchess became fascinated with the history and importance of the other stately homes of the UK. Join The Duchess as she embarks on a wonderful journey through time, to learn more about the incredible homes that have defined Great Britain and, most importantly, meet the other extraordinary women who work tirelessly behind their doors to preserve their history and magic for future generations.  Resources: To find out more about our Sponsor CircleDNA, visit their website https://circledna.com/en-us/ (here) https://www.onefineplay.com/ (https://www.onefineplay.com/) https://www.belvoircastle.com/ (https://www.belvoircastle.com/) https://www.emmaduchessrutland.com/

Finally, we start talking about actual topics, starting with Joel leaving his fuel filler cap behind at the servo, and he talks about a little bit of news. The news he brings to the table is Toyota releasing a British Racing Green limited edition GT86 in Japan. Matt then asks us 2 listener questions, from listeners. The first question from Bob is asking why the Ecoboost base Mustang looks "so terrible" compared to the fully-loaded 5.0 Mustang GT. We then have a debate about Australian car buying habits, and Matt and Mitch get annoyed with Joel and Joseph having a second conversation. The second question is about whether or not each of us like car vinyl wraps or not, and we talk about painting cars and parts. Joseph then talks about some news about Subaru's hybrid E-Boxer coming in 2020, while Mitch fetches some more beer. Mitch then talks about General Motors considering leaving Australia, and handing Holden over to Inchcape; a large multinational automotive distribution company.
