Welcome to episode 178 On today's show we talk about Tires What is tire wear and what should it be? A quick internet search will bring up two magic numbers... 3,700 and 1,800. Those are the numbers that RideApart.com claims as the miles that your front and rear tire should be replaced at, respectively. In my opinion, that is utter bullshine! Yet these numbers are repeated ad nauseum across the internet by other sources who don't have their own opinion or are too lazy to do the research. We talk with MPC winner (for Creative Riding) Bri Van Morrison Abernathy Artemus Maximus Vifferious about tires that he has used over the years on his 200,000+ mile VFR750F. Jae also weighs in, as her MPC was cut short due to a tire 'cording' . After the break we'll get into some MPC data. The 2019 Motorcycle Podcasters Challenge has come to a close and the results are in. How did Creative Riding do and where do we stand? Are we still friends? Find out. No, I mean YOU find out. I don't have time to research it. Thank you for finding out. Among our fabulous mile-munching crew there were several bikes taken out along the way. First was Nerissa's brand new Harley. So we kind of knew it was gonna break down. :P Then Chad's Ducati took a dive due to moisture of all things. Bri Viffer's V-Max also had some brief issues, and to wrap it up, Jae's tire wear wasn't the main thing that took her out of competition. After break two we come back to talk racing and fun stuff. We'll touch on Roger Hayden's return to flat track, some new from the soggy and invisible roads on the Isle of Man, and much much more. Stick around. Thanks to our supporters on Patreon. Show #438   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 9th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   PININFARINA BATISTA SHOWS UP WITH 1,900 HP IN LONDON "Ahead of its full UK debut at Goodwood this weekend, the Pininfarina Battista headed to London to launch the capital’s new ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ). The Battista, Pininfarina‘s first full car production effort, will enter production next year with deliveries starting towards the end of that year. That will be just a few months before London‘s ULEZ extends to the whole of Greater London." reports Dominic Wilde for InsideEVs.com: "A Rimac-supplied 120 kWh battery pack helps deliver 874 bhp and 1,694 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to rocket it from 0-60 in less than two seconds, to 186 mph in under 12 seconds, and onto a top speed of 218 mph. Range almost 300 miles, which is enough for a non-stop drive from London to Paris"   Michael Perschke, CEO, Automobili Pininfarina: "“The Battista is a truly beautiful, guilt-free hypercar – the first EV to really fall in love with – because electricity enables us to develop it with zero emissions and as the most powerful car that will have ever been designed and built in Italy. As London joins many cities in moving towards a more sustainable future, we hope that the Battista also inspires a generation to consider electric cars, not just through the benefits of zero emissions, but also through the beauty and the performance that electrification offers.”   https://insideevs.com/pininfarina-batista-shows-up-with-1900-hp-in-london/   FORMULA E OFFERS SUPPORT TO MOTOE AFTER FIRE "ABB FIA Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag says he has offered support to the organisers of the MotoE championship after a pre-season fire destroyed its fleet of electric bikes." reports Alex Kalinaukas for Motorsport.co: "The incident, which was caused by a short circuit that ignited a high-density battery in a charging point, at the Jerez circuit last month caused the inaugural MotoE season to be delayed until July. Agag said he reached out “just to show my solidarity to them” as a fellow electric motorsport series." Alejandrop told Autosport: "I sent a message to the guys from Dorna the next day saying that if they need our help, we’re here to help. We’ve done 50 races [with] not one single incident, not one single short circuit. But this takes a lot of work, a lot of experience, a lot of effort to make sure everything works."   https://www.motorsport.com/motoe/news/formulae-offers-support-jerez-fire/4365118/   NEW RENAULT ZOE WON’T BE ALL-NEW, JUST A HEAVY REDESIGN INSTEAD "According to Renault design boss Laurens van den Acker, the upcoming new Renault ZOE will be a “heavy phase two design rather than a new car from the ground up,” reports Mark Kane today for InsideEVs.com. Rachel Burgess for Autocar says: "Pricing for the new Zoe is a long way off being announced, but it's likely Renault will try to keep at the same level to sustain its popularity as one of the most affordable EVs on the market. The new Zoe is expected to use a bespoke EV platform shared across the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. That's instead of sharing its platform with the current Nissan Leaf, which uses an adapted version of the original 2011 Leaf's platform. The bespoke electric platform, which will be used for all forthcoming small to medium-sized EVs, will allow greater battery capacity for a range target of 250 miles under the new, more real-world WLTP testing regime. That's a match for the latest Zoe R110's NEDC range claim, which is claimed to be around 190 miles in the real-world."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-renault-zoe-ev-be-heavy-phase-two-design   H-D GETTING READY FOR THE LIVEWIRE WITH NEW CHARGING STATIONS The first of two stories coming to us via RideApart.com. "Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire electric motorcycle will be available for purchase nationwide beginning this August. They're already taking deposits. Harley has been busy installing Electric Vehicle charging stations at its dealerships. The LiveWire sports an SAE Combo CCS charging connector, which is the same as many American and European electric vehicles: Chevy’s Bolt and Spark, the BMW i3 and several electric Volkswagens and Mercedes. The LiveWire has a pricetag starting at $29,799, has a 140-mile city range and the capacity for a Level 3 charger, which means it will charge from a depleted battery to full in an hour or less. And Harley-Davidson wants you to spend that hour, of course, in one of its dealerships, checking out all the other bikes as well as the accessories available for your LiveWire."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/316318/harley-davidson-installing-charging-stations/   Meanwhile Sabrina at RideApart.com picks up on the noise a Harley makes: "The beauty of a silent, electric motorcycle is that it leaves a blank canvas of sound to be painted with your own colors. This is at least what Harley-Davidson believes in. The company addressed early concerns about the Livewire “not having a typical Harley sound” by promising its first electric model will have a signature sound nonetheless. We now know that the Milwaukee brand will actually dive into its history to give the Livewire a truly unique sound. In fact, the company confirmed that the model will come equipped with a customizable note function and a variety of engine sounds to choose from, accessible via the onboard computer. The system will use a compact “engine sound system” that will use two speakers located on the tail of the bike to produce the artificial engine sound. The system will be synched with the throttle input, which means the bike will mimic the sound of an engine at idle and increase the “revolutions” as soon as the throttle is twisted."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/316258/harley-livewire-customizable-engine-sound/   CCW REBUILDS OVER 50 DIESEL BUSES TO ELECTRIC, OFFERS 466 KWH PACKS "Complete Coach Works (CCW), headquartered in Riverside, California took a different path of electrifying buses – instead of offering new electric buses, they are rebuilding existing diesel buses to electric drive. Operators can literally convert their existing fleet or purchase newly refurbished buses from CCW’s inventory and reportedly save money compared to brand new vehicles." says nsideEVs.com today: "So far, CCW deployed more than 50 Zero Emission Propulsion System (ZEPS) in the U.S., which covered over 3 million revenue miles (on average roughly 60,000 miles per bus). One of the customers operates 30 ZEPS buses."   https://insideevs.com/ccw-rebuild-diesel-buses-to-electric/   GERMAN PROSECUTORS FIND COLLUSION BETWEEN AUTOMAKERS OVER DIESEL EMISSIONS "European anti-trust regulators say they have found collusion among German automakers to avoid cleaning up tailpipe emissions. On Friday, anti-trust regulators for the European Union charged BMW, Daimler, and Volkswagen with colluding to block the introduction of effective diesel and gasoline emissions technology." says Green Car Reports: "Volkswagen has already paid $1.2 billion in fines in Germany over its diesel emissions shortfalls. BMW and Daimler have paid $9.5 million. All three automakers have shifted their focus from developing new diesels to spending billions of dollars to develop electric cars and build up supplies of batteries to power them. EU regulators said the new charges are not related to emissions cheat devices. but to failing to offer the latest, most effective emissions reduction technologies to European consumers (for both gas and diesel engines.)"   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122486_german-prosecutors-find-collusion-between-automakers-over-diesel-emissions   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #439   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 10th April 2019. NEW AUDI AD CAMPAIGN AIMS TO COUNTER SKEPTICISM OF EVS There's a new Audi TV ad out with a great sense of humour, all about people having outdated perceptions of electric cars. Autoblog Green reports: "It's called "Not For You," and the 60-second ad opens on a man clad in robe and slippers who has come out of his home with his dog to fetch the morning paper. He watches as a garage door across the street opens to reveal an E-Tron connected to a charger. Then, he's transported to a variety of scenic locations — a dusty desert plateau, a snowy mountain range and rainy forest — and the not-so-scenic, crowded parking lot of a gas station, all to make points to counter doubts about range, charging infrastructure and performance of EVs."   [audio]   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/09/audi-ad-campaign-skepticism-evs/   FCA JOINS OPEN POOL WITH TESLA TO BEAT EUROPEAN CO2 FINES "Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has found a solution to its CO2 emissions problem. Starting next year, the European Union’s target for average CO2 emissions drops down to 95 grams per kilometer." says Jalopnik: "FCA’s collective average emissions in 2018 amounted to 123g/km. According to the Financial Times, FCA will pay Tesla hundreds of millions of euros for emissions offsetting credits to avoid what could be billions of euros in fines when the new target becomes law in 2021."   Julia Poliscanova, a senior director at Transport & Environment: "“For Europe, this is the first time that completely separate manufacturers have pooled their emissions together as a commercially viable compliance strategy. Once you’ve set up a pool, it is valid for several years.”   Engadget say: "It was expected that car makers would pool their own sub-brands together. VW can use improving emissions with its regular brands to offset exotic brands like Porsche and Lamborghini, for example. However, this (along with a deal between Mazda and Toyota) is the first time two wholly separate car companies have agreed to pool their emissions in Europe, and shows the pressure on companies to electrify their lineups. This sort of deal isn't completely unusual for Tesla. In 2018 alone it made $103.4 million by selling zero-emissions credits, and it made $279.7 million the year before that. The EU pact could significantly pad Tesla's bottom line, though, and it's coming at a good time. "   https://jalopnik.com/fca-joins-open-pool-with-tesla-to-beat-european-co2-fin-1833869284   https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/07/fiat-chrysler-to-pay-tesla-to-avoid-eu-fines/   JAGUAR I-PACE ACCOUNTS FOR ALMOST 6% OF JAGUAR SALES IN U.S. "In March, Jaguar sold in the U.S. 212 Jaguar I-PACE, which is over 5.7% of its total result of 3,679 (by the way, up 13% or 419 units year-over-year). Sales during the first quarter amounted to 608, while cumulatively the total is now 1,001." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "It prompts us to ask whether the I-PACE or other new BEVs like the upcoming Audi e-tron will be able to match Tesla at some point in the future?"   Forum member Scottf200: "Is this one of those scenarios where you can make statistics sound like whatever you want be it good or bad? I mean 6% sounds good on the surface but less ~200 per month does not. JAN FEB       MAR — 2019 U.S. EV SALES 210 186      212      — Jaguar I-Pace"   https://insideevs.com/jaguar-i-pace-sales-u-s-march/   SURVEY: 60% OF UK ADULTS WILLING TO PURCHASE AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE TO BENEFIT THE ENVIRONMENT "Poor air quality in cities is caused by a combination of traffic, construction sites, building energy use for utilities such as heating and hot water, as well as domestic appliances and even cleaning products. In a survey of 2,000 adults across the UK, Nissan’s research found that...60% of respondents being willing to purchase an electric vehicle to benefit the environment, only a quarter of respondents were aware of the financial incentives available to help them do so. This contrasts with the 43% that said they were more likely to make the move to electric as a result of financial incentives."   FORMER MOTOGP CHAMP TO ATTEMPT ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE SPEED RECORD "Originally unveiled in 2013, Voxan Motors is prepping its electric motorcycle, the Wattman (cute, right?), to take to the Bolivian salt flats in an attempt to unseat the current electric motorcycle land speed record holder. The rider they’ve enlisted to make this attempt is none other than Max Biaggi."reports RideApart.com today: "Biaggi will attempt to break the standing record currently held by Jim Hoogerhyde, who took the Lightning SB220 electric motorcycle up to 327.608km/h (203.566mph) in 2013. Voxan and Biaggi are aiming to break the 330kph (205mph) mark with this attempt. Voxan presents the Wattman as “the most powerful electric motorcycle in the world” with numbers like 200 hp and 200 Nm of torque (that’s 147.5 ft-lbs) with a motor that spins up to 10,500 rpm. Voxan claims the bike’s 0-100 mph time as 5.9 seconds, its 0-80 percent charge time as less than 30 minutes, and a range from fully charged at 180km (not quite 112 miles)."   https://insideevs.com/attempt-electric-motorcycle-speed-record/   SKODA PREPARES THE LAUNCH OF THE E-CITIGO ŠKODA will be providing ten prototypes of the all-electric CITIGO E-PILOT built upon the basis of Volkswagen e-up! for selected customers to test in the Czech Republic › The participants’ experience from everyday use and their specific suggestions will serve as important feedback before the launch of eMobility of traditional Czech brand › Prototypes have completely different characteristics than the later all-electric CITIGO production model   Pedro from PushEVs.com: "We already know that the production version will cost around 19.000 euros and have a WLTP range of 270 km (168 miles), which means that the battery capacity will double from 18,7 to 37,4 kWh when compared to the current Volkswagen e-Up – on which it’s based on. The current Volkswagen e-Up battery pack is made with 204 battery cells from Sanyo/Panasonic with 25 Ah each in a 102s2p configuration. It’s expected that the Volkswagen e-Up 2.0 and the SKODA e-Citigo get 50 Ah battery cells from Samsung SDI, however since CATL is also a battery cell supplier for the VW Group, I don’t count them out yet."   https://pushevs.com/2019/04/04/skoda-prepares-the-launch-of-the-e-citigo/   TESLA REPORTEDLY WORKING ON MODEL S & X POWERTRAIN UPGRADE "Tesla and CEO Elon Musk have said that there are no immediate plans to use the Model 3’s 2170 cell format S and X vehicles. The CEO has also made it clear that a “refresh” is not something the automaker does, at least in the traditional sense. However, new information first reported on Electrek suggests that Tesla is already working on a new motor upgrade for the Model 3’s more expensive siblings." says InsideEVs today: "Currently, the Model S and Model X don’t employ the same system. Instead, they use AC induction motors. If this update happens as reported, that will change. While we don’t have concrete evidence that Tesla is making such plans, the idea makes perfect sense. Electrek learned from its sources that the Model 3 motor setup can be over 4 percent more efficient than the system in Tesla’s flagship offerings."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-s-x-new-electric-motors/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #429.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 29th March 2019. Hello to two new patrons of the show. Welcome to CLIFF BATES and PRODUCER GEOFF GATES   KIA SOUL EV 2020 REVIEWS CNET says: ”As for the all-important driving range, the Soul EV is extremely competitive. The EPA officially rates the Soul EV at 243 miles of range, which bests the Chevrolet Bolt (238 miles), Kia Niro EV (239 miles) and Nissan Leaf Plus (226 miles). Only the Hyundai Kona Electric can go farther than the Soul, with its EPA-rated 258-mile range. Paddles on the steering wheel activate different levels of brake regeneration, with the maximum Level 3 offering for the sort of one-pedal EV driving characteristics that many people (myself included) love. That said, the Soul won't regeneratively brake to a complete stop like some other EVs, though if you press the Auto Hold button on the center console, you can let go of the brake when you're stationary."   Autocar were impressed by the tech: "Adaptive cruise control and lane following afford a useful amount of autonomy in heavy traffic, there’s an extensive suite of electronic safety systems, a head-up display and various features designed to maximise the battery pack. These include cooling and heating the 64kWh battery with liquid rather than air, while a button enables you to control heat or chill only the driver’s portion of the cabin if you’re one-up and need to eke. An in-built heat pump recovers waste heat from the coolant, while driving modes that include Eco and Eco Plus help. If you want one, your chief issue will be the wait – orders for the e-Niro stretch to 2020, and the Soul EV does not go on sale until late this year. But by that time, Kia’s plans to increase production of its EV powertrain may well have been realised."   Steve Fowler at AutoExpress: "We’re big fans of the Soul EV’s bigger brother, the eNiro, so it stands to reason that we’d love the similarly–powered new Soul, too. However, the Soul seems have a more youthful spirit and more character, in keeping with the car’s slightly smaller size and funkier design. And Kia hopes it will be cheaper than the eNiro. A lot can happen between now and when the first cars arrive at the end of the year, but Kia would like it if the first cars could come in at just under £30,000 including the current government EV incentive."   LIGHTNING INTRODUCES THE ALL-NEW $13K STRIKE "After two months of teasing, Lightning Motorcycles has finally lifted the veil off the all-new Strike, its long-range, low-price model." Says Sabrina at RideApart.com: "Lightning announced that the model will be available with three battery options. The entry-level “Strike Standard” receives a 10kWh battery with an estimated range of 70 miles on the highway and 100 miles in the city—this is the model the manufacturer has been announcing at the highly appealing price point of $12,998. The “Strike Mid-Range” is powered by a 15 kWh battery able to power the vehicle on 105 highway miles and 150 city miles. This version of the Strike has been priced at $16,998. Last but not least is the long-range “Strike Carbon Edition” which 20 kWh battery allows the bike to travel up to the much-advertised 200 miles in the city—this version is offered at $19,998. It isn’t the under-$13k price Lightning has been teasing for two months, but it is still a lot more affordable than a number of electric motorcycles currently on the market.Lightning is expected to start rolling the first Strikes out of production in July 2019 in the United States, starting with the top of the line Strike Carbon Edition. The company will announce its plan for international expansion later this year."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/315837/lightning-strike-electric-motorcycle-launch/   10,000 ELECTRIC CARS REGISTERED IN NORWAY THIS MONTH: HALF ARE TESLA "According to the latest registration data (as of the end of March 28, 2019), new all-electric car registrations in Norway already reached 10,000 for the month (probably including a three-digit number of imported used BEVs). The official results will be announced inthe first days of April, but it’s already certain that we are watching a groundbreaking record of records." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The biggest splash in March was done by Tesla, which reportedly noted 5,000 registrations, including over 4,500 Tesla Model 3. It was just 4,000 recently! With many new compelling plug-in models on the horizon, Norway could be just a year or two from almost entirely switching to electric cars."   https://insideevs.com/10000-bev-registered-norway-half-tesla/   PROGRESSIVE BRAKES ADDED TO MODEL 3 New release notes for Model 3 in Europe: "If you are driving over 50 km/h and brake forcefully, the brake lights will now flash quickly to warn other drivers that your car is rapidly slowing down,” reads the description for Tesla’s Dynamic Brake Lights feature. In addition to flashing the tail lights in situations that call for unexpected heavy braking, the vehicle will also flash its hazard lights. If your car stops completely, the hazard warning lights will flash until you press the accelerator or manually press the hazard warning lights button to turn them off."   PORSCHE TAYCAN ENTERS FINAL TESTING PHASE AHEAD OF SEPTEMBER REVEAL Simon at Teslarati has the lowdown on the final testing stages of the Porsche Taycan: "Porsche engineers are currently taking advantage of the summer in the Southern Hemisphere to test the Taycan’s driving dynamics in warm temperatures. At the same time, teams from the company are also testing the vehicle in Scandinavia, just a few miles away from the Arctic Circle, to evaluate the electric car’s performance in frigid temperatures. Porsche notes that the Taycan’s testing spans 30 countries, in temperatures that range from -35 to 50 degree Celcius (-31F to 122F). Porsche initially plans to start the Taycan’s production at 20,000 units per year, though positive reception from reservation holders have encouraged the company to raise its estimates for the all-electric car’s manufacturing. The Taycan will be capable of sprinting from 0-60 mph in under 3.5 seconds and have a range of over 300 miles on one charge. The all-electric car is designed to support 350 kW charging, making it possible to replenish over 60 miles of range in just 4 minutes."   The most significant facts from the Taycan testing phase:   Overall distance covered: Approximately six million kilometres, of which two million were endurance run kilometres Countries: A total of 30, including the USA, China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Finland Temperatures: From minus 35 to plus 50 degree Celsius Air humidity: From 20 to 100 per cent Altitude: From 85 metres below to 3,000 metres above sea level Charging cycles: Over 100,000 using various charging technologies across the globe Development team: Around 1,000 test drivers, technicians and engineers   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-model-3-estimates-excessive-negativity/   EXCLUSIVE: INTERVIEW WITH FORD’S CHIEF OF ELECTRIFICATION Bradley at InsideEvs.com has been talking to Ford's Ted Cannis. "Cannis confirmed that Ford’s crossover EV will have at least 300 miles of range in E.P.A. testing, but he declined to commit to target numbers for horsepower or acceleration. Cannis said that “most interest from consumers [for EVs] is in performance vehicles.” When asked how Ford is striking the balance between power and driving range, he conveniently replied, “We will not sacrifice either. The company will continue to include hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure EV in its electrification portfolio. For regions and specific customers not wanting to go “cold turkey” (as he put it) on combustion, hybrids with and without a plug will serve their needs. Talks with Volkswagen about sharing EV platforms and tech are focused on filling in gaps in overseas markets. “We’re looking at efficiencies around the world so we can get more scale,” he said. Cannis mentioned the impact of local incentives on EV adoption.”   https://insideevs.com/interview-ford-chief-electrification/   NISSAN COMPLETES SALE OF BATTERY BUSINESS TO ENVISION GROUP Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has completed the previously announced sale of its electric battery operations and production facilities to Envision Group, a world-leading digital energy company. Under the deal, Envision has completed the acquisition of Nissan subsidiary Automotive Energy Supply Corporation and battery manufacturing operations in Smyrna, Tennessee, owned by Nissan North America Inc. (NNA), and in Sunderland, England, owned by Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. (NMUK).   Envision has also acquired Nissan’s Japanese battery development and production engineering operations located in Oppama, Atsugi and Zama.   The workforce at all facilities covered by the deal will continue to be employed. The headquarters and development centers of the business will remain in Japan.     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #404.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 3rd March 2019. Hello to new Patrons of the podcast. All new PRODUCERS welcome ROB  DICKINSON, CHARLIE MILNER and LLOYD WATKIN.     HYUNDAI KONA REMOVED FROM SALE IN THE UK, BACK TO WAITING LIST First some news about the Hyundai Kona Electric. We last heard that it was so popular there was a 42-52 week waiting list. Some people were told "at least" a year. And now Hyundai has removed it from sale in the UK. On the web page there is now a simple place to register your interest in the car and join the waiting list. Whilst I understand you don't want to have buyers waiting too long, there comes a time when even a huge fan and cheerleader for the Kona like I am has to say, who dropped the ball? Is this a mistake? Is this just another example of auto makers no wanting to sell EVs until 2020? As an aside, maybe I'm having a sense of humour failure but the page on the Hyundai UK website is titled "Charge to the front of the queue".   https://www.hyundai.co.uk/reservations/kona-electric   FEBRUARY 2019 U.S. PLUG-IN EV SALES REPORT CARD "5,750 Model 3 sedans in the U.S. this February, in addition to some deliveries in Canada and a growing number of cars in Europe and China. So, while Model 3 deliveries in the U.S. are down once again month-over-month, this was reported and anticipated. As far as we can tell, Model 3 deliveries overall on a global level are impressive to say the least. Moreover, year-over-year sales are up significantly, and that’s the metric the rest of the automotive industry focuses on when reporting growth. Our U.S. Model S and X estimates stand at 800 and 1,100, respectively."   "Based on our data collection, GM delivered 1,225 Bolt EVs and just 615 Volts in the U.S. in February 2019."   "Nissan LEAF sales for the month of January were down from prior months. Moving into February sales are suffering again: The automaker reported deliveries of a just 654 LEAFs in the U.S. last month."   "Honda Clarity deliveries in the U.S. in February amounted to a reported 1,281, according to the automaker. According to Honda’s report to InsideEVs, total Clarity PHEV deliveries hit 1,213 in the U.S. this February."   https://insideevs.com/february-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/   ASTON MARTIN REVEALS EYE-WATERING PERFORMANCE FIGURES FOR VALKYRIE HYPERCAR The heart of the Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar’s hybrid powertrain naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine. That power plant is good for a very round 1,000hp. That consists of a bespoke motor from Integral Powertrain in the United Kingdom, and a battery system from Croatian EV supercar specialist Rimac.   The electrical system delivers an additional 160hp, with a further 206lbft of torque available. Aston's advertised power figure of 1,160 horses is achieved by coupling the 1,000-horsepower V-12 to a racing-grade, Rimac-influenced Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), which gives the already potent vehicle an electric boost at the push of a button.   5 REASONS TO BUY AN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE Sabrina at RideApart.com: "A staggering number of companies—most of which are start ups—are coming up with their vision of the electric motorcycle. While the technology continues to evolve, it has already come a long way from its first inception on the market." Perks - there are government incentives that allow you to reduce the purchase price of the bike. You can get a rebate at the federal level, but also from your state. Maintenance - Without any fluids and fewer mechanical parts to worry about, electric motorcycles are a good way to ride about worry free. Accessibility - All you have to do is twist the throttle and hit the road. Savings - “fuelling” up on electricity is cheaper than filling up on gas. Fun - Because everything is processed electronically, it makes accelerations almost instant and takeoffs, that much more fun.   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/307187/5-reasons-buy-electric-motorcycle/3813389/   MORE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES PLEASE: INTRODUCING THE REGENT "There’s a new electric motorcycle company popping up every day. We are living through a renaissance" says Kate at RideApart: “Meet the Regent, a bike as stately and British-looking as its name, but wait! It’s made in Sweden. Apart from a blank panel hiding a battery where any traditional motorcycle’s engine would be, this looks the part of a classic Brit bike. These machines are self-defined “retro cafe racers.”. the Regent will have a 150 km range (that’s about 93 miles, which is not shabby). It has a 72V – 80Ah battery that puts out 15–30 hp. It has a top speed 135 km/h (that’s just shy of 84mph)."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/306374/more-electric-motorcycles-introducing-regent/   Porsche launches developer competition with Mission E Cross Turismo data Porsche is inviting developers from around the world to work on digital mobility solutions for future Porsche sports cars with the launch of the second edition of the “Porsche Next OI” developer competition is being kicked off. Teams will have access to more than 300 different data sources and functions and, crucially, work with in-browser Porsche car emulators, namely the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo electric study to present and test their apps and services around the clock in a realistic environment.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK Raj Badwell I bought my Leaf from Arnold Clark and got a bargain because they didn't know what they where selling. I learned all I needed from YouTube, this podcast and Facebook owner page. Arnold Clark offer good customer service and I got my 16plate 30kwh tekna with 6.6kw charger for £3k less then everywhere else. My advice would be learn as I did and go to a non EV spicalist as you can get your self a bargin.   George Clargo Best place to get an ev from in my opinion is Go Green Autos from Oxford (www.gogreenautos.co.uk). Very knowledgeable guy and a great stock of cars and vans. Brought my work van from him and currently buying another from with him ATM. He's happy to deliver all over the UK and does detailed videos for all of his cars showing all dents and scratches. Best car buying experience in my opinion. Give me the ability to run my gardening business (Clargo Garden Services) as a green business will electric van and battery powered garden tools. He's also helping organise The Oxford Electric Car show in Oxford on the 15th June.   David Emeny I lease my Leaf 40kWh from DriveElectric.  Not sure this counts as ‘buying’ but I think they’re worth mentioning because it was a way for me to switch to an EV quickly instead of driving around in a petrol car for another year while I saved enough for a deposit or sat on a waiting list.   Stefan I would like to take the opportunity to break the monopoly of car manufacturers with electric cars. As a dealer today, I have to bind myself to exactly one manufacturer. My dream future looks like any car dealership can sell any brand. For example, a dealer could specialize in sports cars. As a customer, I could admire all the cars right next to each other. The dealer would have more power over the manufacturers because he could expose the cars to real competition. He also doesn't have to worry about going broke when a brand is not doing so well economically and he doesn't have to invent fairy tales about how bad another brand is because he has it in his program himself. I hope that the EU will make such concepts possible in the future!     Peter Mooney I purchased a Mercedes B250e from an independent garage called ecarlogical http://ecarlogical.co.uk/ It wasn’t my first choice of car or garage. I originally looked at a similar spec car in a main dealer closer to where I live and even took it out for a test drive. I loved the car but was worried about range and lack of rapid charging, etc. I decided not to go for it so called the Mercedes dealer and thanked him for his help. I also called ecarlogical out of courtesy. The salesman I spoke with Alex, encouraged me to reconsider because it is such a great car. He compared the two cars (his and the one from Mercedes) and walked me through (with patience) charging locations, how long it takes and recommended websites.  He even said I could take it out on a test drive for as long as I wanted. I’m sure if I had asked he would have let me have it for a few days.   Andre Evans ROss I have to share Carvana with you again. They're also only available in the U.S. and they've been around for at least 8 years. I always describe them as the Amazon.com of cars and if going to dealer is as loathsome to you as much as it's to me then Carvana is definitely an option (a dealership experience is what led me to purchase my EV with Carvana).   Josh Pritt, Co-founder Space Coast EV Drivers club I will hopefully order my Model 3 from Tesla.com. otherwise I will buy a Chevy Bolt from Maher Chevrolet in st Petersburg Florida. They are one of the few dealers that understand EVs and have 3 level 2 chargers installed around the outside of the dealership!     Art Lighthouse My wife and I decided to finally buy an EV after 13 years of saving for one, and we settled upon the Tesla Model X. With a single phone call, a sales rep drove a Model X to our house, took our whole family out for an extended test drive, kids included, giving both my wife and I a chance to drive the car. He let the kids play around inside and out, experimenting with any buttons they could find, playing with the electronic seats, the touch screen, and, of course, the falcon wing doors. Then the sales rep capped it off with a garage fitting to make sure that the rather large Model X could not only fit in our garage, but that the falcon wing doors could open up inside the garage as well. we bought online the very next day. The buying process was so convenient   Ken MOrris I expect to get my first EV car from as a 2nd hand model, most likely from a website based purchase, hopefully later this year. It will have to be 2nd hand as I couldn’t stretch to a new model, but something that certainly appeals to me at the moment as that as ranges on new models increase, this should provide a brief 2nd hand market (depressed values) in the next few years on models with low mileages and a lot of life left, but with what might be seen as unappealing low range.   ANDREW CRIPPS I got great help with EVs from Motorize EV store in Sidney, British Columbia. They were very knowledgeable, had good inventory, and are always super helpful. https://motorize.ca/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…   How do you feel about Tesla’s move to online-only sales? Do you want to test drive a car first? What about if you have to arrange finance to buy it, even tho Tesla say you can return it?     I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 197 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. And new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JAMES STORR.   ELECTRIC PEUGEOT e208 IN DETAIL: SPECS, IMAGES, VIDEOS "Peugeot released specs for the e-208, the first all-electric model for the brand, build on the eCMP platform. The public unveiling is scheduled for Geneva, but already today you can enjoy a gallery of stock images." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The 50 kWh battery provides 340 km (211 miles) of range under the WLTP test cycle and is covered by warranty for 8 years or 160 000 km for 70% of capacity. The electric motor is rated at 100 kW, which enables it to do 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds. The brisk acceleration will be especially welcome in city driving at low speeds. 0-50 km/h takes just 2.8 seconds. There is also a handy three-phase on-board charger rated for 11 kW. The French manufacturer didn’t forget to add a heat pump to save as much range as possible in winter. Orders will be accepted from late summer 2019, while the launch is expected in the fall of 2019.   The tag line is "Unboring the future".   https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=74&v=2LhRl8wcBVE   https://insideevs.com/electric-peugeot-e208-detail-specs-images-videos/   ZERO SR/F ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE UNVEILED "For the past month or so, Zero has been teasing a new addition to its lineup with only a few peeks at the silhouette and limited performance information to work with—teasing well done. The company has finally unveiled the new SR/F and we now know what Zero has been working on: the view from here is pretty nice!" says Sabrina for RideApart.com: "The new SR/F is using the same 14.4 kWh battery used in the high-end S and SR. What has changed is the electric motor—instead of the usual 7-centimeter rotor found in the current Zeros, the F receives a 10-centimeter unit, which results in a performance boost. In fact, both versions of the F (Standard and Premium) are rated at 110 horsepower and a top speed of 124 mph. the standard SR/F is expected to offer a combined range rated between 102 and 123 miles (depending on highway speed). Charging time is expected to hover between 4.5 hours for the entry-level model with 3 kW charger and 1.5 hour with the 6 kW fast charger. Pricing has been set at $18,995 for the Standard version. The Premium trim adds a screen, fast-charger, heated grips, and aluminum bar ends for an extra $2,000. This positions the new SR/F at the top of the line, over $2k above the SR."   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25IkSwclpGA   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/306810/zero-unveils-srf-sport-model/   BYD BREAKS GROUND ON NEW 20 GWH BATTERY PLANT IN CHINA InsideEVs reports: "BYD has broke ground on its new lithium-ion battery factory in Chongqing, one of China‘s traditional auto manufacturing hubs. The planned output is to be 20 GWh annually using eight fully-automated production lines. The first stage of the plant is expected to be completed within a year from now. In 2018 BYD sold about 227,152 plug-in electric cars, and 247,811 including buses/trucks, which means that the company will gain the potential to significantly increase production. And if you consider that in China, sales of plug-in electric cars are booming, then it seems certain BYD will need this extra capacity in the very near future." And Mark Kane has done some handy math: The 20 GWh of batteries is equivalent to:   200,000 all-electric cars with 100 kWh packs 400,000 all-electric cars with 50 kWh packs 800,000 plug-in hybrids cars with 25 kWh packs   https://insideevs.com/byd-new-20-gwh-battery-plant-china/   THE PORSCHE MACAN IS GOING ELECTRIC "The Porsche Macan is Porsche’s best-selling vehicle, powered by an internal-combustion engine, a crossover that handles better than it has any right to. It will also be going electric soon, the Financial Times reports." reports Erik at Jalopnik: "The Porsche decision, which will be revealed next Tuesday by the group, shows the carmaker is serious about selling electric vehicles to a mass market. The all-electric Macan, a sport utility vehicle, will be produced in Leipzig early next decade, the company confirmed to the Financial Times. Chief executive Oliver Blume said Porsche was aiming for every second car it sold to be “electrified” — pure-electric or hybrid — by 2025, meaning that Porsche’s electric ramp-up is even more ambitious than its parent, the Volkswagen Group."   https://jalopnik.com/the-porsche-macan-is-going-electric-1832867432   AUDI LAUNCHES PLUG-IN HYBRID Q5, A6, A7 AND A8 "Audi has revealed new plug-in versions of its Q5, A6, A7 and A8, each combining a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. At the same time the marque has chosen to drop the ‘e-tron’ branding from the sole plug-in model it previously sold, and from now on will only apply that badge to its full electric models." reports EVO: "The 50 and 55 variants all share a 14.1kWh battery pack, with estimated electric-only ranges set at around 25 miles on the WLTP cycle. Final UK specifications, pricing and availability have not yet been confirmed, but we suspect they’ll fall in line with Audi’s other numerically ordered models."   https://www.evo.co.uk/news/22328/audi-launches-plug-in-hybrid-q5-a6-a7-and-a8   NEW VERSION OF MORE POWERFUL AUDI E-TRON SPIED: E-TRON ALLROAD? Is there an AllRoad version of the etron currently being tested? New spy photos suggest so. "The rumors suggest that the sportier version will get a three electric motor set up, with two motors on the rear axle. The e-tron currently develops 402bhp front and rear motor together and if you double the rear motors, we would come up to 640bhp in total. Maybe Audi decides not to give the e-tron all that power but a figure around 500-550bhp is clearly possible." says InsideEVs   https://insideevs.com/new-version-audi-e-tron-spied-allroad/   NISSAN LEAF PLUS FIRST DRIVE REVIEW: MORE OF A GOOD THING Jamie at Electrek says: "Last week we were invited to San Diego to drive the new Nissan Leaf Plus, the updated version of the Leaf with a new 62kWh battery pack, which will start sales in March. We spent the day driving it all through the county on a variety of roads, and came away impressed if not surprised by this iteration on an already-solid package. The main practical upshot of the Leaf Plus’s larger battery is that the car has increased range, power and quick charge ability." What about price? "Chevy has reached the 200,000 vehicle mark in the US, and this will effectively raise the price of that car by $3,750 starting in April. This gives Nissan a little breathing room with the Leaf Plus, and if they end up with a price which is a little higher than the Bolt, the effective price for consumers will still be lower.  Nissan has sold around 130,000 electric cars in the US, so they still have time before their credit runs out."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/25/nissan-leaf-plus-62kwh-2/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 14th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Hello to our newest Patreon members...EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CRAIG COLES and JUAN GONZALEZ   Thank you for your email Marco Mascarello who sent me a picture as he walked past a Tesla Model 3 at Schipol Airport. He said it was a US version without the CCS plug.   Hi to Karthic who has noted that I-PACE deliveries have gone down from 3000 to 1000 in January in the Netherlands.   And a note for European listeners to the podcast. I was playing on the Renault Zoe configurator and the Q90 has been discontinued, that was the version which charged at 43kW. So now the only option for a new one is the R110 - either in Dynamique trim or S Trim. As I always say, if you want a new or used one check out Will Adams at DSG in Morecambe in the UK, and for used ones look up EV Nick who knows them inside out.   WHY TESLA'S MODEL X WAS THE FIRST SUV TO RECEIVE A PERFECT CRASH TEST RATING "Unlike most SUVs which tend to roll over with ease, the Model X continues to return to an upright position. Here's why the Model X was the first SUV to receive a perfect crash test rating. When it comes to vehicle safety, size matters. So it's not uncommon for SUVs to be generally safer than your standard sedan. However, they tend to have one big shortcoming. Rollovers." says Business Insider: "Since the Model X is an electric vehicle, there's no need for mechanical components in the hood of the car. This allows for a much larger crumple zone to absorb energy from a frontal crash. It also has specially-made side sills that absorb energy in addition to its rigid side pillars. These features help reduce the force exerted on passengers and increases their protection. "   https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-x-perfect-safety-crash-test-rating-2019-2   FRENCH ELECTRIC CAR MARKET GREW 138% IN JANUARY "The French plug-in car market took home 4,210 registrations in January — +78% year over year (YoY). Fully electric models jumped 138%, their highest growth rate in over 2 years, while plug-in hybrids remained in the positive as well — +14%." reports Jose Pontes for Clean Technica: "Looking at January best sellers, the Renault Zoe registration uptick continues (+136% YoY!). With 1,496 units, it landed #29 on the mainstream market. But the real events were the Kia Niro EV (149 units) and the Hyundai Kona EV (147) performances, both winning top 10 spots." In the comments Maarten says: "Renault looks like it is starting to produce the Zoe in volume, thanks to the factory upgrade last autumn (220/day => 440/day). Next month start of Model 3 deliveries, market going crazy"   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/12/french-electric-car-market-grew-138-in-january-cleantechnica-report/   SUBARU'S FIRST EUROPEAN HYBRIDS WILL BE SHOWN IN GENEVA "Subaru is adding electrification to its iconic boxer engines and will show off the technology for the first time at this year's Geneva Motor Show." reports the excellent Motor1.com: "Last year, Subaru introduced the Crosstrek Hybrid. The plug-in hybrid is currently only available in the U.S. Two new models equipped with "'e-Boxer" engines will be presented at the show – it's not clear what they will be yet. Subaru also hasn't revealed whether the cars will be plug-in hybrids or a full hybrid system."   https://www.motor1.com/news/305127/subaru-hybrids-2019-geneva-show/   DHL LAUNCHES ELECTRIC DELIVERY VEHICLES ACROSS NEW ZEALAND From listener Rakesh Shah a story about DHL deliveries. "Delivery provider DHL Express has added three electric vehicles to its New Zealand fleet, with the aim of reducing all logistics-related emissions to net zero by 2050." reports InsideRetail: "The vehicles, which will be used for pick-up and delivery services across Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington, are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 80 per cent. The vehicles have been partly funded by the New Zealand Government through its Low Emissions Vehicles Contestables Fund, which seeks to expand the use of electric vehicles and other low emissions technology in the transport space."   https://insideretail.co.nz/2019/02/13/dhl-launches-electric-delivery-vehicles-across-new-zealand   DRUID TRIES TO CAST A SPELL WITH NEW SORCERER MOTORCYCLES Sabrina at Ride Apart.com brings up the next story: "New-to-the-market Druid launched its very first motorcycle—the Sorcerer, built on the Prophet platform - The model will be available in a hybrid variant, half electric magic, half petrol-fuelled brawn, as well as in a fully electric version.  According to the company’s Website, all we know about the Sorcerer XEV is that it will produce 150 horsepower.   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/305263/druid-sorcerer-hybrid-electric-motorcycle/   PRESIDENT MACRON TO UNVEIL PLAN TO GIVE EUROPE'S ELECTRIC BATTERY INDUSTRY A JOLT "France will invest 700 million euros ($790 million) over the next five years into projects to boost the European electric car battery industry and reduce its carmakers' reliance on dominant Asian rivals, said French presidency officials." according to Business Insider: "In a speech to the Paris-based International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers later on Wednesday, President Emmanuel Macron will unveil his strategy to help the French car industry fend off competition on electric vehicles (EV) and autonomous cars from Asian and U.S. tech giants. The plan comes after Germany in November set aside 1 billion euros to support battery cell production to reduce dependence on Asian suppliers and shore up jobs at home that may be at risk from the shift away from combustion engines. French officials said the two European countries will work on Franco-German initiatives, at a time when their countries' carmakers are waking up to the threats posed from relying on Chinese suppliers in an age of international trade wars."   HONDA REVEALS FIRST GLIMPSE AT INTERIOR OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE PROTOTYPE BOUND FOR GENEVA From Honda: "Honda has revealed an interior image of its new compact electric vehicle prototype. The interior is designed to create a warm and engaging atmosphere inspired by the Urban EV Concept launched at 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The driver interface shown in the image features a full-width dashboard with clean design elements and intuitive user focused technology. The prototype version of the electric vehicle will be unveiled on 5 March at 2019 Geneva Motor Show." CNET says: "While the gauge cluster only shows battery-charging status as we zoom in, it's the right side of the dashboard that deserves our attention. The style of the system is similar to Honda's current telematics, featuring gray tiles dashed with color to help delineate content. But unlike current Honda infotainment displays, this one is large enough to have tiles on both the left and right sides. The teaser shows off the EV menus, including charge status and charge scheduling, as well as schedules for heating or cooling the cabin prior to departure. It's faint, but you can also see a set of climate controls just underneath what few physical buttons exist on the dashboard, and they look pretty close to the controls seen in other modern Hondas. The buttons above that control the infotainment system, and yes, a volume knob is accounted for. There's also a single button that appears to put the car in Park, but I don't see any button for Drive."   https://hondanews.eu/gb/en/cars/media/pressreleases/161767/honda-reveals-first-glimpse-at-interior-of-electric-vehicle-prototype-bound-for-geneva   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/honda-ev-prototype-geneva-dashboard-teaser/   THE USED CARS THAT WILL SAVE YOU THE MOST OVER NEW CARS IN 2019 "More often than not a pre-owned model will offer more value than a new one, since it’s already taken the depreciation hit. While some cars don’t quite suffer from the same drop as others, a new study from iSeeCars.com reveals the vehicles with the most dramatic savings versus their new counterparts in 2019." according to Jalopnik today: "A used Nissan Leaf will be, on average, 40 percent cheaper with an average savings of $13,524."   https://jalopnik.com/the-used-cars-that-will-save-you-the-most-over-new-cars-1832587817   ABB SPEEDS UP POLISH SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT WITH SUPPLY OF DC FAST CHARGERS PKN ORLEN has signed a general agreement for the supply of ABB’s next generation DC fast charging stations for electric cars – Terra 54. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   My news yesterday that I had quit my day job, and indeed a 25 year radio career, seemed to resonate with people. Either those who had done something similar to chase a dream or those who wanted to.   So to those on Patreon…   JON BEARDY MCBEARDFACE (PARTNER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) WALTER MACVANE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON KNODEL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BORISLAV BORISOV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JEFF ERBES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER)   WILLIAM ANZUETO (PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (PRODUCER) i3 AND 7KW OF PV! MARK GARNETT (PRODUCER) STE BIRKETT (PRODUCER) – FOUND ME RECENTLY MARTY YOUNG (PRODUCER)   BRUCE HARRISON R W SAVAGE     CLARIFICATION ON THE HARLEY DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE From Sabrina Giacomini at RideApart.com: "However, in recent years, innovation hasn’t been part of the brand’s lingo—its almost as though it’s been sitting on its legacy and relying on that and only that to sell bikes. The LiveWire had the potential to change that and open new doors. While it hasn’t completely failed, I don't believe it has succeeded either. The way I see it, there are 2 reasons for that and here's my two cent about it." So what are those two reasons? And is one of them the range which I told you was my main let down. "Today, people have access to more electric models options than ever and while 110 miles is a decent range for an electric bike, it might not be enough for the LiveWire to stand out of the stylish, efficient, and affordable electric motorcycle crowd. Because now we all know: an electric orange comes at a price. The company announced on Monday that the LiveWire was on track to hit the showrooms this year and that the price tag would be set at $29,799. With young adults dealing with more debt than ever, $30k will be better spent on purchasing a car (or groceries) than a bike." "The company did have the opportunity to bring Alta Motors on board, a well-established competitor in the field of electric bikes that likely would have propelled H-D forward in its electric ambitions. Would a partnership have resulted in a cheaper LiveWire? Maybe not, but Alta's contribution to the project could have meant a sweeter deal for the money." So i got it wrong with 59 miles, I don't think i was looking at the correct number. The Harley website says: "The high-voltage battery, or RESS, provides an estimated 110 miles of range, measured using the MIC mixed-use cycle. Riding range estimates based on current SAE testing of LiveWire concept motorcycle. Actual riding range will vary based on several factors including weather and driving conditions."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/300795/weekend-wtf-harley-davidson-livewire/   https://www.harley-davidson.com/gb/en/motorcycles/future-vehicles/livewire.html   LYNK & CO'S HATCHBACK DROPS MAJOR CAMO IN NEW SPY PICS "Lynk & Co is progressing with the development of its fourth model which will take the shape of a compact hatchback. This fresh batch of spy photos reveals the company is in the advanced stages of testing as its prototype is featuring less and less camouflage." reports Anthony for Motor1.com: "According to unconfirmed information, the model will be based on the architecture that will also underpin Volvo’s upcoming revamped 40 series of compact cars. The Swedish hatch and small wagon are rumored to go fully electric, but that won’t be the case with Lynk & Co’s sibling. It may seem like a conventional ICE-powered vehicle but underneath the skin should be a compact plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. This system should be good for a purely electric range of about 50 miles (80 kilometers)"   https://www.motor1.com/news/300930/lynk-co-hatchback-spied/   JAGUAR AFFIRMS FORMULA E COMMITMENT DESPITE IMPENDING CUTS "Jaguar Land Rover revealed last week that it will cut 4,500 jobs from its global operations, with the majority of them hitting management roles in the UK and the company set to start a voluntary redundancy programme." says Alex Kalinauckas for Motor1.com: "But [James] Barclay, the FE squad’s team principal, stated that Jaguar would carry on racing for the “longer-term” as it fits with the manufacturer’s recent drive towards electrification on its road car models. "It’s an unprecedented time for the car industry,” he told Motorsport.com: “A lot of geopolitical factors are affecting the industry at the moment – a slowdown in China, slowdown in diesel sales and we have that small matter of Brexit in the UK, which is affecting consumer confidence. So, we have to take some key decisions now to protect the long-term future of our company. [It’s] really important we make those steps now. But at the same time, we also announced that we’ll be building electric drive units at our engine manufacturing plant in Wolverhampton and also building a battery plant in Birmingham."   https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/jaguar-fe-commitment-job-cuts/4323781/   GAC MOTOR UNVEILS CONCEPT CAR ENTRANZE GAC Motor officially announced that it has registered its North American Sales Company in Irvine, Calif., near Los Angeles. The regional headquarters will be responsible for branding, marketing, product planning and financial affairs. GAC Motor also announced at the press conference that the GAC R&D Center Detroit has officially begun operation. Located in Farmington Hills, Mich., the new R&D center was built with an investment of US$ 4.4 million and encompasses nearly 50,000 square feet of real estate. And as for their new electric concept, it's the ENTRANZE. "The Slick Bullet shaped exterior is completely breathtaking in the real flesh and introduces brand new proportions. New 3+2+2 seating arrangement and ‘aircraft inspired aisle’. Two-side mounted displays for functional feature control, plus curved displays for passenger entertainment. With most of the car made of environmentally sustainable materials, the interior of ENTRANZE is more influenced by home decoration than cars and is a great contrast to the technology and the stark exterior."   https://insideevs.com/gac-entranze-naias-photos-videos/   RENAULT EXPANDS ZOE FLEET IN ZITY CAR SHARING IN SPAIN "The new electric car sharing service Zity in Madrid, Spain turns out to be very popular as 157,000 people used it in the first year." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The fleet of 500 Renault ZOE Z.E. 40 is soon to be expanded by another 150 ZOE to 650 total by the end of January. We don’t know the number of trips, but as many customers were using Zity more than once, it’s maybe on the track to profitability."   https://insideevs.com/renault-zoe-fleet-zity-car-sharing-in-spain/   WHY THE MCLAREN P1 IS A LIVING LEGEND "The 903bhp McLaren P1 is now six years old but remains an awe-inspiring machine. Motorious hosted the McLaren halo car at Autosport International 2019" says AutoClassics.com. Although it's not a Plug In car, it was a very early hybrid supercar. Using the Formula-1 inspired hybrid technology for performance, it was the first of a new breed. These days no supercar would be complete without a big battery so help out the wheezing old fossil engine. And since then we've had fully electric supercars from the likes of the Rimac Concept One, and the Rimac C_Two.   https://www.autoclassics.com/posts/reviews/mclaren-p1-motorious   BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT ON EVS "The day after Christmas, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave us an unexpected gift. Brake pads on Teslas would “literally never” need to be replaced, he said, thanks in part to the electric car’s regenerative brakes cutting way down on brake pad use compared to a conventional car. That seemed a little too good to be true! But maybe not impossible, exactly" said Erik Shilling of Jalopnik. But then he asked, would an EV maker really say you never need to replace them? He asked Jaguar who said: "The brake pads on the I-PACE do indeed need to be replaced periodically. As you might imagine, the rate at which this is required varies widely owner to owner, based on his/her individual driving style. The battery must be below approximately 80% state of charge in order to receive the full benefit of the resistance of the electric motors. The idea here is that we can’t overcharge the battery and force additional electrons in, if it’s already full, so the resistance provided by the motors gradually does decrease the fuller the battery is requiring the use of the standard braking system." And Erik asked GM: "The regenerative braking feature of the Bolt EV allows the vehicle to decelerate with less use of the vehicle’s base hydraulic brake system. However, the actual mileage that the brake lining’s life could be extended varies due to the parameters under which the vehicle is driven." Tesla didn’t reply to his request for comment but hey if Elon has tweeted, don't correct the boss. Leave it.   https://jalopnik.com/the-truth-about-brake-pad-replacement-in-teslas-and-oth-1831591519   DIESEL POPULARITY ON AUTO TRADER FALLS 40% IN TWO YEARS "Searches for diesel cars on Auto Trader have plummeted 40% over the past two years. The online classified marketplace said the proportion of fuel related searches attributed to diesel on Auto Trader has dropped from a high of 71% in November 2016, to a record low of 47% last month." in a new MotorTrader.com article: "Annually, between 2017 and 2018, there was a 40% increase in consumers searching for AFVs, with electric alone recording a spike of 52%. In just two years, searches for AFVs and pure electric have increased a significant 130% and 179% respectively."   https://www.motortrader.com/motor-trader-news/automotive-news/diesel-popularity-auto-trader-falls-40-two-years-15-01-2019   HACK YOUR WAY INTO A NEW TESLA MODEL 3 "Tesla has been working closely with white hat hackers for years in order to make its vehicle software safer and now it’s taking an unprecedented step: it’s going to be giving away a Model 3 to a hacker who can crack the vehicle." reports Fred Lambert at Electrek: "Over the past 4 years, Tesla has been running a bug bounty program and according to sources familiar with the effort, the company has given away hundreds of thousands in rewards to hackers who exposed vulnerabilities in its systems. The automaker increased its max payout per reported bug to $15,000 last year and it also took a great step in reassuring owners who are hacking their own vehicles. Tesla said that it will not void its warranty when a vehicle is hacked for “pre-approved good faith security research:” But now the top prize being offered is even more valuable, a free car to the winner of a hacking contest.   https://electrek.co/2019/01/14/tesla-model-3-giveaway-hacker/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read more about Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 13th January 2019. VW COULD FACE RECALL OF MORE CARS OVER EMISSIONS IN GERMANY "Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is considering recalling more Volkswagen cars due to its emissions scandal, the Bild am Sonntag newspaper reported on Sunday." according to an article by AutoBlog today: "The KBA has opened an investigation into whether a software update for 1.2-liter engine cars, including the popular Polo, enabled them to cheat emissions tests, the newspaper said, without naming its sources. The Bild am Sonntag said prosecutors were preparing charges against unnamed Volkswagen managers for suspected fraud, noting that the company had given assurances in 2016 that the 1.2 liter engines did not use illegal emissions cheating defeat devices."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/01/13/vw-diesel-emissions-recall-germany/   NISSAN E-POWER A HUGE SALES SUCCESS: WHY NOT ADD A PLUG? "Nissan celebrates a tremendous achievement of selling 136,324 Note cars in Japan last year, which put the model on the top of all models" says Mark at InsideEVs.com: "We would normally not bother, but both Nissans – Note and Serena – are offered in conventional and a special, series-hybrid version called e-POWER (without plug-in capability). As it turns out, 70% of all Note sales in 2018 were Note e-Power, which would translate to over 95,000. Since the introduction of Note e-POWER in November 2016, Nissan already sold over 200,000 of those!"   https://insideevs.com/nissan-e-power-add-plug-in-capability/   RIDEAPART.COM HAS MORE DETAILS ON THE HARLEY DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE ELECTRIC BIKE "The bike is built on a lightweight aluminum chassis. The exposed frame, floating upward tail, and naked silhouette are a stark contrast from the typical Harley—exactly what the company is aiming to do with what it hopes will help kindle a younger audience’s curiosity. The electric powertrain is set low within the frame to send the weight towards the ground and keep a low center of gravity." "A new feature, alien to the rest of the lineup, is the “twist and go”—since its electric, the LiveWire neither has a clutch nor a gear selector. You only have to, well, twist and go. The company has also been selling the model’s performance, with the promise of a 0-to-60 in 3.5 seconds thanks to its electric powertrain. " And yes it will charge Level 1, Level 2 or even Level 3 rapid charging. And you will need to charge it - after 59 miles. "As for pricing, the tag has been set at $29,799 and the model will be available in three colors starting August 2019."   https://www.rideapart.com/articles/300452/2019-harley-davidson-livewire-new/   ELECTRIC CAR SALES SET TO RISE DRAMATICALLY IN 2019 "Electric car sales are set to rise dramatically in 2019 as rapid growth in the sector is expected to continue. According to electric vehicle website Driving Electric, drivers who are considering taking the plunge are advised to strike now before supply bottlenecks take hold." according to the UK version of Motor1.com: "Research by the website shows that it usually takes around 10-12 weeks for a new car to be delivered, but lead times for some electric vehicles can be up to six months. The website found that Hyundai claims to have “no lead time” between order and delivery for the hybrid version of the Ioniq hatchback, but buyers wanting plug-in hybrid or fully electric versions will have to wait around four months."   https://uk.motor1.com/news/299988/ev-sales-rise-2019/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQC 400 EXTENDED DRIVE TO RED ROCK CANYON Oh to have the life of an EV reviewer for InsideEVs.com: "Crusing down the strip in Las Vegas in the Mercedes EQC 400, it’s very possible to completely forget you’re in an electric car. The lights, outside music and inevitable slow crawl in Vegas strip traffic can remove some of the most enjoyable features of driving electric; that being the instant torque of the electric motor, the quiet cabin and smooth vibration-less acceleration." Tom Moloughney was the lucky one going for a ridealong to the desert. "The EQC is not a dedicated-platform EV. It shares many components with the C-Class and GLC line. It’s going to be manufactured on the same line as the C-Class and GLC in Daimler’s plant in Bremen, Germany. " "As for range, Mercedes has been quoting 400 km, which is based on the European WLTP range test. Shult has been driving the EQC for a while now, and knows exactly what it’s capable of. He told us of a recent trip when they drove the vehicle (normal driving not hypermiling) 228 miles and had 7% battery left." "The EQC is equipped with a 32-amp onboard charger, good for AC charging up to 7.4 kW. The car will come with a 120-volt portable EVSE in the US, and Mercedes will offer Level 2 charging options for purchase. As for DC Fast charging, the EQC will accept up to 110 kW, allowing the vehicle to charge from 10% to 80% in about 40 minutes." "The EQC has an 80 kWh battery, which we found out during the drive is the usable capacity, not the total. The pack, the power electronics and drive motors are all liquid-cooled, and the vehicle also employs a heat-pump."     COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Tuesday 19th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   TESLA RESPONDS TO 'EXTRAORDINARILY UNUSUAL' FIRE I've steered away from this story because it really was just a random video on Twitter, and who knows the background. The Tesla Model S belonging to West Wing actress Mary McCormack. The video, posted to Twitter on Friday, shows the Tesla parked on the side of Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, with a small jet of flame shooting out from underneath it. It looks unlike every video I've ever seen of an EV fire and as you can imagine, if there's something online I'm more interested than most. Tesla have issued a statement: "This is an extraordinarily unusual occurrence, and we are investigating the incident to find out what happened. Our initial investigation shows that the cabin of the vehicle was totally unaffected by the fire due to our battery architecture, which is designed to protect the cabin in the very rare event that a battery fire occurs. While our customer had time to safely exit the car, we are working to understand the cause of the fire. We’re glad our customer is safe." Tesla has made 300,000 cars they've produced, which have travelled 7.5 billion miles and only five incidents of cars catching fire per billion miles travelled. S. Federal Highway Administration that shows there are 55 incidents of fire for every billion miles driven when looking at all automobiles in the country.   http://www.cbs8.com/story/38443215/west-wing-actress-mary-mccormack-says-husbands-tesla-caught-on-fire-out-of-nowhere-watch   MERCEDES EQ C IN NEW SPY SHOTS com has new spy shots of the Mercedes EQC, in what they call a near-production prototype, with the hanshtag switchtoEQ on. "The black and blue body cover has a contrasting splash of colour at the back where Mercedes slapped on a red strip all over the tailgate on the taillight level and we can see the tape is extending onto the rear fenders. Even though the body design still remains largely concealed underneath the wrap, the EQ C already looks substantially different than other three-pointed star SUVs, such as the similarly sized GLC for example." says Motor1: "The large mesh up front might trick you into believing the EQ C has a conventional grille, but being fully electric, it doesn’t need one. Pictured above, the concept had a panel mimicking the appearance of a traditional grille and we’re expecting the production-ready model to feature a similar look. At the back, the aforementioned red tape could be a clue suggesting the zero-emissions CUV will have a full-width light strip in the same vein as the showcar." Michael Kelz, Chief Engineer for the EQC, says: "“With the finishing straight in sight, we are now able to absolve another extremely demanding test programme with our pre-series vehicles. But after successfully completed endurance tests in winter at minus 35 degrees C, we are confident that the heat trials will confirm that we are well on schedule for the start of series production.”   https://www.motor1.com/news/249422/mercedes-eq-c-new-spy-photos/   MERCEDES A-CLASS HYBRID COULD GET ELECTRICALLY DRIVEN REAR AXLE Meanwhile, Anthony Karr writes about the new Mercedes A-Class and a new Plug In Hybrid for next year: "Autocar claims the hybridized powertrain of the A-Class PHEV will combine a 1.3-liter gasoline engine with 163 horsepower (121 kilowatts) and an electric motor on the rear axle, providing additional 90 hp (66 kW). This layout will basically turn the A-Class into an AWD vehicle, hence the A250e 4Matic predicted name." There's no full BEV A-Class plans I've read about, however if you apply the pattern for Mercedes, that would be an EQ A equivalent.   https://www.motor1.com/news/249433/mercedes-a-class-hybrid-details/   NISSAN FREEZES FUEL CELL CAR DEVELOPMENT "Nissan is halting its development of fuel cell cars. Company officials have concluded that demand for the vehicles is unlikely to take off anytime soon." according to NHK: "Nissan announced plans in 2013 to develop and mass-produce fuel cell cars with Daimler of Germany and Ford of the United States. But the company says high vehicle price tags and delays in setting up hydrogen stations have limited the market potential."   https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20180618_27/   KIA’S SOUL EV MODEL IS GETTING POPULAR Whenever I talk or tweet about the Kia Soul EV, or the Niro EV, or the Hyundai Kona EV, it gets a reaction. Those Korean cars are finding a fair few fans around the world. "Kia Motors said Sunday that seven out of 10 Soul models of cars it sold in Korea in the January-May period were electric vehicle variants, with overall local sales jumping 13 percent from a year earlier. "Gasoline and diesel-powered Soul models are also available in the domestic market, but they were outpaced by the EV version in terms of sales due to a growing demand for environmentally friendly vehicles."   http://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/article/article.aspx?aid=3049443   SECOND RENAULT ELECTRIC VEHICLE EXPERIENCE CENTRE Following their experience centre opening in Stockholm, Renault have opened their second experience centre, in Germany, based in a busy shopping centre. According to Sebastian Blanco at Forbes: "here are digital and static displays that give information about EVs and the purpose of the store, "is to engage with customers and answer frequently asked questions about electric cars, while promoting the benefits of driving such vehicles," the company says. Test drives and vehicle orders can be arranged at the new store as well." "Given that Nissan is the electric vehicle sales leader, and that it is part of the same corporate alliance with Renault, would a collection of EV-only storefronts make sense in America? They wouldn't necessarily be able to sell the Leaf there, given our auto dealer laws, but Tesla has had success spreading the EV news with its stores and that's a mission that would undoubtedly help sell more Leafs through normal retail channels."   https://www.forbes.com/sites/sebastianblanco/2018/06/18/nissan-renault-ev-only-store/   JAPAN NEDO LAUNCHES $90M SOLID-STATE BATTERY PROJECT "Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) has launched the second phase of a major solid-state Li-ion battery project in a quest to achieve both high energy density and safety in batteries for electric vehicles" reports Green Car Congress: "The project ultimately aims to lower the battery pack cost to around ¥10,000/ kWh ($90/kWh) by around 2030—about one-third the cost for existing lithium-ion batteries. The research also targets a fast-charge time of 10 minutes, also around one-third of that needed for lithium-ion batteries."   http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/06/20180617-nedosslib.html   ZERO ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE UK DEMO TOUR Last weekend, on Sunday, San Francisco's Zero Motorcycles started an eight stop tour across the UK, giving riders a chance to test ride the company’s latest model range, reports RideApart.com, on InsideEVs "One of the biggest obstacles electric motorcycle manufacturers have to overcome isn’t merely churning out a quality product, but convincing the public to actually give eBikes a try. With the electric powertrain’s full torque always on tap at any point, eBikes are a lot more fun to pilot than most would expect" “Riding a Zero is quite an experience so we’ve decided to go out and take our bikes to the people, to give them an opportunity to try one for themselves,” explains Zero’s UK Country Manager, Dale Robinson. “Lots of people have preconceptions about electric motorcycles but I’ve never met anyone yet who didn’t come back from a test ride with a smile on their face. There’s no hard sell, just an opportunity for riders to ask any questions they may have, take one out for a ride and make up their own minds on electric motorcycles.” June 24 North Yorkshire, June 27 Hampshire, July 21 & 22 Northumberland, August 18 Scotland, August 19 Scotland and September 19 Surrey.   https://insideevs.com/zero-electric-motorcycle-demo-tour-starts-today-in-uk/   NORWAY’S FIRST ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT TO TAKE OFF ON MONDAY And finally, yesterday you and I were talking about the Jaguar powerboat. Now Norway’s first electric aircraft is 6 days away from take off. The electric aircraft, an Alpha Electro G2 produced in Slovenia, is scheduled to take off from Oslo Airport on Monday afternoon. The plane can carry two passengers and takes two hours to charge. Anja Bakken Riise of Norwegian environmentalist NGO Future in Our Hands says: “Unnecessary flights contribute to damaging the world’s climate through enormous carbon dioxide emissions. This aircraft shows it is possible to fly on electricity. The point of the flight is to show it's possible"   COMMUNITY Le Mans hybrid batteries.   You can listen to every previous episode of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Wednesday 23rd May 2018. First a word for any EV groups meeting up soon. Like the group organised by Mark Goudie (Pron: Gordy) who organises regular EV meet ups with other EV owners here in the UK, so hello to the Northwest England Owners group on Facebook, and all the information you share and conversation you have. Any other groups listening? Let me know I’ll give you a shout.   Mark also opened up the Tezla / Tessla debate – I think I just say what comes naturally BUT apologies to those who insist of Tessla, if I ever say Tezla I’m sorry. From now on I promise to try harder at Tessla.   STUDY PREDICTS INCREASE IN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES Starting with a study by Statista, reported by RideApart.com and then ono InsideEVs, which is like a russian nested doll of credit I'm giving there, they are forecasting global e-bike sales will reach approximately 40 million units sometime in 2023. That's a huge number, and it starts to make more sense when you realise 35million of the 40million will be in China. But even so, 5 million electric bikes is a big number for North America and Europe. They say: "Unsurprisingly, one of the strongest forces in the entire e-market equation is urban (and suburban) areas. An increasing amount of electric two-wheeler sales are coming from scoot-sharing services like BMW’s DriveNow program, or the San Francisco-based Scoot Network e-scooter sharing offering. Both of these services, in addition to buying large fleets of bikes, also serve as a sort of motorized, two-wheeled test-drive, introducing the non-riding public to life on two-wheels. The number of EV startups risen sharply for the last couple years as well, and signs point to that trend only intensifying."   https://insideevs.com/study-predicts-huge-increase-in-electric-motorcycle-sales-by-2023/?utm_source=bambu&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=industry   RIVIAN TO DEBUT 800-HP ELECTRIC TRUCK AT LA AUTOSHOW Detriot-based electric car startup Rivian Automotive is getting ready to take the stage later this year at the Los Angeles Autoshow and debut the company’s first electric truck. “according to Christian Prenzler for Teslarati. "Rivian is also creating an 800-HP version of the vehicle capable of more than 450 miles of range, making it an SUV having the longest all-electric range on the market" These will serve the popular American consumer truck segment which we don't have in the UK or Europe to such a large extent. It's easy to quote numbers on something not yet made, but they say 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. “It’s stiffer than a supercar,” said CEO RJ Scaringe in speaking with Engadget. “There are only a few cars in the world that are going to be as fast as ours, and we have a large five-passenger truck.” The price they say is in the $50K to $90K region which seems way too cheap for all that performance. Rivian have their factory, the old Mitsubishi plant in Illinois, which they bought in January 2017.   https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-800-hp-electric-truck-la-autoshow/   ADVANCED E-BUSES HIT ROADS QUICKER THAN EVS The latest long-term forecast from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) shows sales of electric vehicles (EVs), increasing from a record 1.1 million worldwide last year to 11 million in 2025, and then surging 30million by 2030 which cost-parity with combustion is achieved. China will lead this transition, with sales there accounting for almost 50% of the global EV market in 2025 and 39% in 2030. The advance of e-buses will be even more rapid than for electric cars, according to BNEF’s analysis. It shows electric buses in almost all charging configurations having a lower total cost of ownership than conventional municipal buses by 2019. There are already over 300,000 e-buses on the road in China.   https://www.windpowerengineering.com/business-news-projects/advanced-e-buses-to-hit-the-roads-quicker-than-electric-vehicles/   CHINA CUTS CAR TARIFFS "China will cut tariffs on most imported cars to 15 percent from July 1, the finance ministry said on Tuesday following a thaw in trade tensions with the United States" says the UK's Daily Mail. Whilst Bloomberg say: "For Tesla, a tariff cut will provide a boon until they set up local production. Tesla has been working with Shanghai’s government since last year to explore assembling cars in China. China saying that it will allow foreign new-energy vehicle makers to fully own auto factories as early as this year removed a primary hurdle for Elon Musk."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-22/china-is-said-to-cut-car-import-duty-in-boost-for-lexus-bmw   http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-5756777/China-says-cut-auto-import-tariffs-July-1.html   MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE COULD END UP BEING EVEN QUICKER Staying with Tesla and it seems Ryan McCaffrey from Ride The Lightning Tesla Podcast has a direct line to Elon - which some superfans of both would probably compare to that old saying about The Pope having a direct line to God. I'm joking. Mostly. However Ryan said on Twitter: It’s probably not *this* simple with manufacturing, but wouldn’t the robot just reach into the red caliper pile on the assembly line for the cars tagged as Performance? In other words, it’s just a different part (in practice if not technically so), not a different process." So he's talking there about the red brake parts seen on other performance models. To which Elon replied: "not promising anything, but we *might* be able to increase Model 3 Performance power output a little" However I think many buyers will be happy to stump up $54,000 for a very quick dual motor Model 3, rather than $78,000 (without Autopilot) for a stupidly quick Model 3. There will be those who always want the fastest, but basic dual motor would do me more than fine.   https://electrek.co/2018/05/22/tesla-model-3-performance-version-higher-power-output-teases-elon-musk/   DS3 DESTINED FOR PARIS MOTOR SHOW Maybe DS are feeling like they're being left out of the EV party because Rachel Burgess in Autocar point out: "DS will reveal the electric DS3 Crossback compact SUV, a rival to the Audi Q2, at the Paris motor show this October ahead of its launch in 2019. The EV variant of the new car, which will run alongside more traditional powertrains, will be available from launch and will offer a range of more than 124 miles on each charge. The urban-focused car is likely to have a 50kWh battery pack. DS product boss Eric Apode told Autocar that "DS has to lead [the electric] innovation" within the PSA Group. "This is also because of pricing. It [electric technology] has to start with premium brands because the prices will be high," he said. "Then, as the pricing decreases, it can go to the other brands."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/electric-ds-3-crossback-be-revealed-2018-paris-motor-show   MODEL 3 BRAKE ISSUES WILL BE SORTED SOON Finally on Tesla, Elon Musk has now admitted there was a braking issue with the Model 3. The braking issue was first pointed out by Consumer Reports. He said it can be fixed with a firmware update that the electric car maker will be rolling out in a few days. He said in a reply to Electrek: "Looks like this can be fixed with a firmware update. Will be rolling that out in a few days. With further refinement, we can improve braking distance beyond initial specs. Tesla won’t stop until Model 3 has better braking than any remotely comparable car."   https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/teslas-musk-admits-model-3-braking-issue-promises-fix.html   BP INVESTS $20 MILLION IN FLASH BATTERIES CNBC report on more oil money flowing into electrons: "BP said its venture capital arm was investing in Tel Aviv-based StoreDot as it looks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its operations. StoreDot develops so-called "flash batteries," lithium-ion batteries that it says can charge electric vehicles in a matter of minutes." "Ultra-fast charging is at the heart of BP's electrification strategy," Tufan Erginbilgic, chief executive of BP's downstream business, said in a statement on Tuesday. "StoreDot's technology shows real potential for car batteries that can charge in the same time it takes to fill a gas tank." The range on their batteries is said to be 300miles but the product won't even start to be commercialised until 2019.   https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/bp-invests-in-israeli-battery-startup-storedot.html   NISSAN: VEHICLE TO GRID SERVICES WILL NOT DRAIN EV BATTERIES Finally Nissan Europe chief Gareth Dunsmore has responded to suggestions that V2G, which is being led in many ways by Nissan because of the CHAdeMO connector, and he says: "“It is not draining the battery, it is using the battery to balance the grid. It uses the battery, but it also puts energy into the battery; it is going up and down rather than draining. Draining the battery is not where the value is for the energy company or the customer.” Accoring to The Energyst: Mike Kerslake, UK technical manager for Chinese battery firm BYD, said V2G services for those customers may require a change of service model in terms of battery ownership and management. “Perhaps the vehicle owner doesn’t own the battery, but it is [instead] leased from an energy resources company, who also gets value from the vehicle to grid capability,” said Kerslake. “So there is quite a potential change in the way it works.”   https://theenergyst.com/nissan-vehicle-grid-services-will-not-drain-ev-batteries/     I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
