It was soon headed for Broadway and was set to be an expensive and embarrassing failure. So how could Twyla turn things around and avert disaster before opening night? After 1993’s River of Dreams, fans waited and wondered if Billy Joel would ever release another pop album. The answer, as we know now, turned out to be no. But, nearly a decade after that release, we saw a new development for Billy’s music. The first years of the new century saw three new releases that featured Billy Joel’s music, but without him playing on two of them. In 2001, Sony Music released the two-disc Essential Billy Joel. But, in terms of new music, Billy also released Fantasies and Delusions that year. It premiered music that Billy had written in the style of 19th century romanticism. Then came the award-winning Broadway production Movin’ Out in 2002, which strung many of his hit songs into a loose dance-based narrative. The styles of these two projects are very different. But, they shared a common thread: Both featured other musicians interpreting Billy’s music. In Movin’ Out, Michael Cavanaugh led the pit band through hundreds of sold out shows. And, the Fantasies and Delusions recordings were arranged and performed by classical pianist Hyung-ki Joo. What changes when other piano players perform Billy’s music? What elements shine through? What’s it like to be tasked with performing music written by one of the most popular recording artists of the 20th century? In a special two-part series, we’re asking just that. And, we’re going right to the sources. This episode features a new interview with Michael Cavanaugh about his Broadway experience. And, stay tuned for the second installment featuring our conversation with Hyung-Ki Joo. Join us, as we dig deep into the music of Billy Joel, with two players who learned and interpreted the pieces. ------ Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor
Pursuing a career or post secondary education in dance are topics of discussion we’ve navigated in other podcasts. We’ve questioned and challenged the stereotypes associated with pursuing a career and/or post secondary training in dance, while trying to dissect and determine factors that influence and contribute them. Today’s discussion will focus on the career of the professional dancer. It is well known that the career of a professional dancer is often short lived, but why? Is the longevity of a career as a professional dancer based on societies expectations surrounding what they want to see on stage or are the factors related to limitations of the body after a demanding 30-40+ years of elite training? Today we will address ageism in dance. Does it exist and if yes, is it only professional dancers that experience ageism or do dance teachers also experience it, in this physically demanding career? Does a professional career in dance need to end early, or can we increase its longevity? How can we promote careers in dance that are free from age biases, stable and can support a family financially? Can we change the publics perception to see beauty of an ageing dancer? We will discuss these questions and more today with the help of an adjunct professor of dance at Marymount Manhattan College Ms. Kristine Bendul. GUEST: Kristine Bendul is a performer, choreographer and master instructor based in New York City. As a performer Kristine has appeared in seven Broadway shows including Roger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Twyla Tharp’s shows Movin’ Out. She has appeared in several television productions including performances on the David Letterman Show and the Academy Awards. Kristine studied at numerous prestigious ballet schools including the School of American Ballet, Boston Ballet and New Jersey Ballet where she became a demi-soloist with the company by age 16. She holds numerous awards and titles as a professional performer including Disco America’s 1st place championships and America’s First professional male-female couple to compete in the gender-neutral category of professional Dancesport ballroom. Kristine has guest taught at the Julliard School, the University Of Michigan and Santa Clara University and is currently working as an Adjunct Professor for Marymount Manhattan College’s Theatre Arts Daily Dance Program.

We’re kicking off 2021 with a look back and a look forward at Billy Joel’s work, his fans, and the music industry in general. This episode features two sets of interviews. The first is with Mikhail Pipavaros and Billy Ruegger from the online music collective Love Raptor. We’ll go behind the scenes of their funk covers of “Movin’ Out” and “She’s Got A Way” and also talk about some of the latest trends when it comes to new musical artists today. Then, it’s the return of Bradshaw Leigh, the engineer who worked with Phil Ramone and Billy Joel on some of Billy’s biggest records. He’ll tell never-before-heard stories about the recording sessions and sheds new light on the famed trip to Russia in 1987. Join us as we dive deep into the past, present, and possibly the future of Billy Joel’s catalog. ------ Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media:Website: http://www.glasshousespod.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod Support the podcast:Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespodVenmo: @MGrosvenor

It is an incredible honor to be the first to show case a new album on FM radio. In this episode of My Father's Place Radio, Richard Solomon interviews Bill Heller of the Rippingtons. The new album is entitled "Open Road." This is his official bio: Bill Heller, best known as the keyboard player for the legendary contemporary jazz group the Rippingtons, grew up in a very musical household on Long Island, NY. His Dad was a conductor (NYC Subway), and his Mom orchestrated all the activities around the house! From an early age, he and his two brothers were surrounded by family get-togethers filled with music. It wasn't long before he got into the act, playing accordion! Bill attended Fredonia State University, and received a degree in Music Education. Bill met Russ Freeman (leader of the Rippingtons) while recording at his studio in Colorado. Russ asked him to play on a few tracks that he was producing for his and Craig Chaquico's "Redwoods to the Rockies". His first Rippingtons recording was “Topaz”, back in 1998, and he began performing live with the band in March of 2001. Since then, Bill has co-produced all of Craig’s CDs, of which a few songs made it to the #1 position on the smooth jazz charts! Bill released his first effort as a solo artist Find the Way in 2014. The project contains 12 titles, all written and produced by Bill. This recording features performances by Jeff Kashiwa and Eric Marienthal, and three different rhythm sections. From the Rippingtons Dave Karasony-drums and Rico Belled-bass, Joel Rosenblatt-drums (Spyro Gyra, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bill Evans, Michel Camillo) and Dave Anderson-bass (Bill Evans, Art Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, Bob Baldwin), Frank Belluci-drums (Bucky Pizzarelli, Oz Noy, Rachel Z) and Jim Cammack-bass (Ahmad Jamal), also Carl Fischer-trumpet (Billy Joel, Maynard Ferguson), and Luis Bonilla-trombone (Diana Ross, Marc Anthony, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). For the last ten years Bill has served as the Musical Director for the Long Island Hall of Fame awards shows. He provided arrangements and incidental music for these shows. The bands he assembled accompanied such acts as Daryl McDaniels of RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Gary US Bonds, Felix Cavaliere, The Lovin Spoonful, Charlie Daniels, Eddie Money, Steve Vai, Vince Giordano, and more. Some of the legends inducted at these shows have included Clive Davis, Ron Delsner, Lou Reed, Eddie Palmieri, Charles Koppelman, and Steven Van Zandt. Bill has produced recordings for jazz guitarists Steve Briody and Matt Marshak. He has also performed on Broadway for the shows Movin’ Out and Hot Feet!
Are you planning on “movin’ out” of Illinois? There’s a new song for you to listen to while packing up. Tim O’Donnell from West Chicago joins Dan in studio to debut his new hit single, “Movin’ Out,” an Illinois inspired parody.
A weekly Glee podcast dedicated to discussing Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson. This week we discuss Movin' Out (5x06). Discussions include - Billy Joel Music! Brief talk about the Jarley/Ryder love triangle. Becky going to college. Sam deciding to become a model. The hint at Rachel/Sam. Blaine and his NYADA audition. And how the Klaine scenes are better than you probably remember.
Join Nick and YouTube musician Kevin Lynch as they discuss such varied topics as Spongebob Square Pants’ Broadway outing, Dear Even Hansen, Billy Joel’s Movin’ Out, EmojiLand and the importance of singers being able to look at music and understand it! It’s a fun, raucous and - at times - foul-language ridden discussion. But what else would you expect from YouTube’s angriest musical theatre fan?!
A graduate of The Juilliard School, Lorin Latarro has appeared as a performer in 14 Broadway shows including Swing, Fosse and Movin Out. Now she's the one making up the steps - and with the hit Broadway musical Waitress under her belt, it seems she's doing something right. But Lorin has a vision to reach beyond the stage, as she uses her art to create real change in the world at large.
Leading IM Creative Successfully IM Creative was named one of the fastest-growing privately-held companies by Inc. magazine in both 2015 and 2016. Today Scott Ihrig and Shannon Morrison talk about working together as a gay couple, the risk/reward proposition of owning a business and their take on digital versus analog life. Who is IM Creative? ‘Being together matters.’ This is the philosophy upon which IM Creative was founded. It also applies to the strong relationship between CEO and founder Scott and Chief Creative Officer Shannon, whose complementary skill makes them fabulous partners in both life and business. Scott and Shannon explain how having a successful company allows them to support the causes they believe in and the importance of retirement planning in the LGBTQ community. Listen and learn how IM Creative’s company values inform their business decisions and the daily habits that help Scott and Shannon improve personally and professionally. Scott spent two years as a lawyer before shifting to a career producing shows for the Radio City Rockettes. In 2000, he stopped working for other people and founded Ihrig Productions. Shannon studied theatre and psychology at Yale and then went to grad school at NYU where he earned an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing. Shannon spent three years as an associate with Hal Luftig, working on Broadway productions like Legally Blonde, Movin’ Out and Thoroughly Modern Millie. In 2007, Scott and Shannon met through an online dating site. Six months into their relationship, Scott was producing a corporate event for a pharmaceutical company and Shannon came along as a production assistant. They quickly realized that Shannon’s theatre background and creativity was a big value-add for the company that balanced Scott’s business acumen and ability to execute on ideas. Together they rebranded the company as IM Creative and have since expanded to include offices in New York, San Francisco, Charlotte and Columbus, Ohio. Their risk has paid off, and their experience and knowledge will benefit you. Find out more: https://debtfreeguys.com/im-creative-leaders-talk-love-business-gay-couple/
