Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Oct. 29 Bridge Valley officials tout the success of its dual enrollment program. The WV School of Osteopathic Medicine establishes a program at Fairmont State. And learn about famous art that was inspired by the Mothman legend…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – Bridge Valley Community and Technical College in South Charleston is making some positive strides for a few new efforts to increase and retain enrollment, as well as transform the overall student experience. The dual enrollment program the college has launched this year allows high school students to take a Bridge Valley course while still in high school if there is a teacher at that high school who has a certification allowing them to be an adjunct to Bridge Valley. Bridge Valley President Casey Sacks said there are a total of 34 high school students taking advantage of the dual enrollment in some form or another and from various districts. Sacks said they have been doing work on process mapping around the recruitment and admission teams, as well as a reorganization of student affairs. “I think a lot of this work has been what has driven some of our enrollment increase, because it has led us to a better job of communicating with people who are interested in the college, so it's something that we all recognize that we're going to continue doing moving forward,” Sacks said. The programs are designed to provide a firm foundation for students interested in osteopathic medicine, including the skills and credentials needed to gain admission and ultimately success in osteopathic medicine school, according to WVSOM President James Nemitz. “These are pipeline programs to educate students about what osteopathic medicine is and to provide them with a pathway to help them be successful at achieving acceptance at medical school,” Nemitz said. The WVSOM campus is located in Lewisburg and was founded as the Greenbrier College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1972. Through the Statewide Campus, WVSOM maintains locations throughout the state used by students in the final two years to complete clinical rotations. The institution is nationally recognized for the number of DOs that graduate from WVSOM and work in rural settings. “We're an attractive institution, especially for students who come from rural areas,” Nemitz said. “And we're experts in training those students to be rural medical providers.” Read more: https://wvmetronews.com/2023/10/22/osteopathic-school-of-medicine-inks-deals-with-fairmont-state-frostburg-state/ #3 – From WBOY-TV Clarksburg – The Legend of Mothman has inspired tons of West Virginians and artists, and items from beers to baseball uniforms have been created using the cryptid's image. Mothman is best known for its presence at the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant in 1967, right before the bridge collapsed, killing 46 people. The legend was widely unknown and forgotten even by the residents of Point Pleasant until John Keel, a prominent journalist and UFOlogist, immortalized the tale in “The Mothman Prophecies” book in 1975. One of the best-known visual art pieces associated with Mothman, the painting “Mothman” by comic book artist Frank Frazetta, was created around 1980. And of course, one of the most recognizable and famous Mothman-inspired artworks is the Bob Roach Mothman Statue in Point Pleasant. The stainless steel figure was created in 2003 and has become a main attraction for the town and a must-see during the Mothman Festival every year. Learn more about the legend -- and the artwork it has inspired -- at the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant. The daily Portland Press Herald and its statewide sister publication Maine Sunday Telegram were, for over a century, the leading news and information providers to residents of Maine. Based in the state's largest city of Portland, these two major newspapers were the cornerstones of Guy Gannett Communications. This Maine-based family-owned business also owned a handful of television stations. In 1998, Guy Gannett decided to sell the entire company, with the newspaper holdings eventually purchased by the owners of The Seattle Times, the fourth generation of the Blethen family. Ten years later, during the 2008 recession, these titles began a journey of cutbacks and downsizing like so many other media companies. And, citing economic concerns, the Blethens announced they were putting the Press Herald and its other Maine newspaper properties up for sale. The next seven years, the newspapers went through two controversial ownership changes — eventually finding themselves in 2015 in the hands of Maine-based publisher Reade Brower, who consolidated the holdings, brought in new senior management and, by all accounts, "righted the ship." Brower kept these iconic news media brands alive until recently when he announced his intention to sell all the media holdings — now under the corporate name of “Masthead Maine.” And that is where today's story begins, where a handful of Maine-based, retired news media execs have come together in hopes of keeping their home as it is today — the only state in the U.S. that does not have one newspaper owned by an out-of-state, corporate media empire. One of those retirees is a locally well-known, longtime columnist for the Press Herald, Bill Nemitz, who leads a group that includes the recently retired president and CEO of Graham Media Group, Emily Barr. Together they serve on the board of directors for the new Maine Journalism Foundation (MaineJF). This nonprofit organization's mission is to "Preserve and nurture Maine's reputation as a bastion for independent local news.” MaineJF seems to be moving now in over-drive, working quickly to assemble a group of local and national donors to acquire $15 million in hopes of purchasing Masthead Maine from Reade Brower and turning it into a nonprofit, statewide news operation, similar to others E&P has reported on such as The Baltimore Banner and The Salt Lake City Tribune. Nemitz recently penned an editorial for the Portland Press Herald, outlining the two major reasons why the MaineJF is working to take over these titles and save them from outside ownership. He wrote, "First, we've all seen what happens when venture capital firms — the predominant for-profit buyers of local newspapers these days — swoop into a market seeking only instant payback on their investment. Real estate and other hard assets get liquidated. Newsrooms get decimated. News — from the workings of local government to the drama of high school sports — goes unreported. And just like that, readers like you are left in the dark. In the timeless words of Joni Mitchell, 'Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone.'" Nemitz then goes on to argue that MaineJF's goal is to turn the media company into a nonprofit entity, stating, "(As) a nonprofit, we exist solely to enhance the journalism, to enlighten our communities, to enrich the public square with real facts, with informed analysis and, most fundamentally in this age of 'fake news' and disinformation, with the truth." In this 187th episode of "E&P Reports," we chat with two of the founding board members of the new Maine Journalism Foundation (MaineJF). This organization is racing to raise $15 million to purchase and keep the now-for-sale Masthead Maine out of corporate hands. Masthead Maine is a locally-owned, statewide media company publishing 23 newspapers. In this episode are MaineJF president and well-known retired local journalist Bill Nemitz and board member and Maine resident Emily Barr, who recently retired as the president & CEO of Graham Media Group.

Fresh after the release of Pink Floyd's mega-selling concept record The Wall, Roger Waters had plans to release a companion piece record to accompany the film adaptation of the famed album. The project was to be titled Spare Bricks, and consist of songs written for The Wall that didn't make the final draft, but Waters abruptly switched directions with the arrival of the Falkland Islands conflict. Waters already was no fan of then prime minister Margaret Thatcher, but this latest development lit an even bigger anti-war fire in his belly, and he set to work on new, more political material.Pink Floyd had already been experiencing internal tensions since Waters assumed total creative control over the group, and those simmering tensions finally boiled over with the production of the record, now named The Final Cut. Upon its release, most critical outlets would offer up mixed to negative reviews, while the band's guitarist David Gilmour would state that the songs on the record weren't good enough for their own release. Not long after The Final Cut, Waters would exit the band amidst a ruinous lawsuit. On this episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz and Patrick are joined by return guest Nate Nemitz to discuss The Final Cut, an album that would subsequently be the final Pink Floyd record to feature Roger Waters. Join them for a frank discussion on solo projects, the politics of the 1980s, and absolutely no comparisons to modern events whatsoever.#werenormalnowLocal Music Feature: Matt Drohan - "Thirteen"

Unowned property refers to tangible, physical things which are capable of being reduced to being property owned by an individual but are not owned by anyone. Bona vacantia (Latin for "ownerless goods") is a legal concept associated with the unowned property, which exists in various jurisdictions, with a consequently varying application, but with origins mostly in English law. Nearly every piece of land on the Earth is a property and has a maintainer (owner). The class of objects, "unowned things", are objects which are not yet property; either because it has been agreed by sovereign nations that no one can own them, or because no person, or other entity, has made a claim of ownership. The most common unowned things are asteroids. The UN's Outer Space Treaty does not address the issue of private ownership of natural objects in space. All asteroids remain unowned things until some person or entity makes a claim of property right to one of them. In an experimental legal case of first impression, a lawsuit for a declaratory judgment was filed in a United States Federal Court to determine the lawful owner of Asteroid 433 Eros. 433 Eros was claimed as property by Gregory W Nemitz of Orbital Development. According to the homestead principle, Nemitz argued that he had the right to claim ownership of any celestial body that he made use of; he claimed he had designated Eros a spacecraft parking facility and wished to charge NASA a parking and storage fee of twenty cents per year for its NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft that is permanently stored there. Nemitz's case was dismissed due to lack of standing and an appeal denied. A gift, in the law of property, is the voluntary and immediate transfer of property from one person (the donor or grantor) to another (the donee or grantee) without consideration. There are several types of gifts in property law, most notably inter vivos gifts which are made in the donor's lifetime and causa mortis (deathbed) gifts which are made in expectation of the donor's imminent death. Both types of gifts share three elements which must be met in order for the gift to be legally effective: donative intent (the intention of the donor to give the gift to the donee), the delivery of the gift to the donee, and the acceptance of the gift. In addition to those elements, causa mortis gifts require that the donor must die of the impending peril that he or she had contemplated when making the gift. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/law-school/support

Trotz ihres Erfolgs beim Publikum genießen Well-made Plays keinen guten Ruf.

The singer/musician/actor Elvis Presley may be best known by the moniker of "The King Of Rock n' Roll", but his discography is by no means perfect. In the 1970s, during the twilight of Elvis' career, his manager Col. Tom Parker (A figure already infamous with a reputation for exploiting the singer for all he was worth) compiled a record titled "Having Fun With Elvis Onstage", seeking to put out an Elvis record in which his parent label RCA would not make any money off it. (RCA would find out about it anyway and put it out themselves)The record was a baffling mixture of stage banter, anecdotes, and jokes normally intended for the pauses in between songs. Removed of their proper context the whole record seemed like a blathering, incoherent mess. Though the record charted on Billboard, it was roundly lambasted by critics, and almost certainly pissed off a lot of Elvis fans.On this episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz & Patrick take on one of the oddest challenges they've ever faced: Reviewing a record that's roundly despised in a historical context, while technically not having any music on it. Nate Nemitz of Must Watch Movies joins them for all the action, as nonsensical stories, unprovoked crowd reactions, and Presley's own inaudible mush-mouth abound.

Winter still has its firm grip on the Boundary Waters as anxious paddlers start to think about the upcoming canoe season. However, something known as the ‘Death March Portage’ in Quetico Provincial Park could make the slow trudge across a frozen lake sound delightful by comparison. In this episode of the WTIP Boundary Waters Podcast, we hear from the father/daughter duo Scott and Emilie Burditt. Scott and Emilie are Wisconsin residents who make an annual trip to Quetico Provincial Park. They share their stories about a love for the outdoors and paddling in canoe country, and how this bond keeps them connected throughout the year. We previously heard from them on episode 16 of the podcast. Speaking of traveling across a frozen lake, in part two of this episode we hear from longtime Cook County resident Jeff Nemitz about building your own pulk sled. Nemitz is the engineer at WTIP in Grand Marais and an avid ice angler who has enjoyed many winter BWCA camping trips. After years of hauling ice fishing and camping gear by a sled with a rope attached to it, Jeff built his own pulk sled in the winter of 2019-20 specifically for Boundary Waters adventuring. With a few simple items from the hardware store, Jeff explains how you can build a pulk sled too.

Special Episode: In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month we’re releasing this special episode to further the conversation. Former Electrician’s Mate Karla Nemitz talks her experiences with sexual assault, mental health, and suicide while in the service, and how she’s now actively working to raise awareness of the issues through art in the hopes those suffering can get the help and support they need, and to further the work to prevent suicide and to eliminate sexual assault from the ranks. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theyhadtogoout/support
What a special treat for you the listener but it was a fantastic time for me sitting down with the one and only Mackenzie Nemitz - a proud Lake Shore High School Alumni along with current member of the red hot Michigan Wolverines Women's softball team. Join me for a fantastic conversation with her about the ups and downs of life - softball and the great relationships she has made along her journey. So many lessons here about overcoming things in life - not just the knee injury she had during her sophomore year. It was so inspiring for me to sit down with her and to learn a few lessons myself. She's a delightful young lady who is going places in life. I am blessed and highly favored to call her a friend now and I'm so happy and grateful she found a little bit of time to sit down with me here today. Please make sure you keep tabs on her and her awesome U of M teammates as the finish up the season and head into the Big 10 Playoffs and hopefully a long trip to the NCAA College World Series. Thanks for listening. Please take a few moments to subscribe & share this with someone, also leave a 5 Star rating on ITunes or other services where you find this show. Download this episode. Jason spent the mid to late 80’s in high school developing an “advanced gift of gab” and pursuing his GED. Jason finished top of his GED testing class (he finished the 8-hour test in an hour and 45 minutes prompting a rolling of the eyes from the instructor) and promptly applied to the Marine Corps. Upon realizing that his GED wasn’t even good enough for the military, he packed up and moved to Colorado where he planned to seek his fortune as a ski bum. But fate had another plan. Jason’s 1982 Volvo exploded the day he arrived which led to him seek a career selling cars. Mostly because he needed a car and back then car salesmen were given a demo. This was the beginning of a lifetime in sales. By 2000 Jason was 30 years old and made a move to the mortgage industry. From 2000 to 2006, the mortgage business was a gravy train with biscuit wheels. But, alas, all things come to an end and it turns out that the mortgage bubble was real! In 2007 & 2008 Jason watched his business fail. It was time to figure out what to do next. Armed with a GED and 18 years of sales experience, Jason was waiting tables at Pappadeaux. 38 years old with 3 young children, a loving wife, and broke. But not broken! After about 10 weeks of selling fish to rich people, Jason was offered a job selling roofing, which he immediately declined. Jason’s wife, Kimberly, said “Really? You want to put the bow tie back on and sell some more fish? You should go talk to them!”. And so began Jason’s career in the roofing business. Today Jason is still a mess! But over the last 4 to 5 years, he has become a trainer, coach, and influencer in the roofing industry. D&G Roofing company has gained attention for innovation and a commitment to a “forward-thinking” approach to a business that has operated mostly the same for over 35 years. Voted “Best Of” in Fort Worth Magazine in 2016 & 2017 and being awarded several industry awards are a few of the accomplishments that Jason is most proud of. But the best thing that has come of his twisted path is the impact his story has had on others! “There is too many “look at me, I’m so successful, you can be too, just follow my system… blah, blah, blah” stories. Most people can relate to my story and I love sharing it!” says Jason. ****DISCLAIMER**** There is quite a bit of profanity in this episode, not really suitable for children (and beyond...use discretion with this episode). This one would have a parental advisory sticker on it...if that was a thing on podcasts. This episode features Shawn Coss and Michael Nemitz. These guys have created a brand called, "Any Means Necessary". Coming in up in Akron, OH these guys have overcome some real adversity to create this brand. They are very honest and do not hold back when it comes to verbalizing how they really feel. Ha. Again quite a bit of cursing on this episode and quite a bit different than what we have been doing thus far on the podcast. This episode is a great example of how positivity can be found in many different ways. One of the main focuses of this podcast is for people to share any and everything they find positivity in. Although most of the art that is used for the clothing for "Any Means Necessary" is pretty "dark/gothic" they still have an overall mission of creating a culture of people that don't give up on life and will do what it takes to live the life that they want to. That is definitely STP all around. Both of these guys have had very, very difficult situations and life setbacks that have led them to where they are now in life. Another disclaimer is that there are some pretty traumatic experiences that are brought up in this conversation. This type of episode was needed, to show that even through some of the hardest situations you can draw up that both of these guys never gave up and are living their dream creating a clothing brand that represents everything they stand for. One of their main focuses through the building of AMN is to raise awareness for "Mental Health". They have donated thousands of dollars and have participated in countless events, fundraising, etc to help with efforts in the mental health field. Everything about these guys is really inspiring and we are definitely pulling for them with all that they are doing. Thanks again to Shawn and Michael for all they are doing to Spread The Positive. ****Listener discretion is advised.****
At 12 years old, Sarah Perry woke up to a fight in her home. When she got the courage to leave her room, she found her mother brutally murdered—and would have to wait more than twenty years until the killer was found. She spoke with reporter Kelley Bouchard about After the Eclipse, her memoir about life before and after the crime. Bouchard reveals the difficult responsibility of covering both brutal violence and personal stories. Also in this episode, Kesich and Nemitz take a few moments to untangle the case of the missing Waterville pit bulls, who allegedly escaped from the shelter the same hour they were ordered to be put down.
Hillary Clinton’s new book “What Happened” is her reflection on the 2016 election, but critical reception suggests some people wish she would keep her analysis to herself. Dill and Nemitz try to define the ideological division within the Democratic Party without using the names “Hillary” or “Bernie,” and discuss whether Trump’s immigration deal with Democrats is a new negotiating tactic or more of his predictably unpredictable political style. Host Greg Kesich is joined by columnists Bill Nemitz and Alan Caron to discuss the history statues teach, Gov. LePage's propensity for penning personal notes and to analyze a presidency that is like no other. Plus, Nemitz previews his upcoming column on a class-action lawsuit against Poland Spring. From Pressherald.com: Gov. Paul LePage took a step Tuesday toward atoning for his recent actions, but he also sent sharply conflicting signals about how he plans to respond to mounting pressure from Democrats and members of his own party. The next time someone says we need to start pounding on the doors of our immigrant communities to “find out what the hell is going on,” remind them of Adnan Fazeli. Fazeli, 38, died on a battlefield in Lebanon last year after leaving his home and family in Freeport to become a fighter for the Islamic State in Syria. As reported in Tuesday’s Portland Press Herald, he came to the United States in 2008, became radicalized after moving to Portland from Philadelphia in 2009 and, as time passed, became increasingly isolated from his family and the local immigrant community before suddenly hopping on a plane for the Middle East in August of 2013. And how do we know all of this now? Because those closest to him called the FBI, that’s how. Column from August 18, 2016
