"I sang before I could talk,” says Steffanie Christi'an, capturing the essence of a voice born in rhythm and raised on soul. In this powerful Detroit is Different interview, Steffanie weaves a narrative of musical lineage rooted in Southfield, church choirs, and impromptu jam sessions with her grandfather who taught her guitar and blues. She reflects on her time at Aisha Shule, calling it "one of the most enlightening and enriching experiences in my life," and opens up about the real grind behind artistry—from acapella basement recordings to demo sessions in New York. Her journey, blessed by mentors like Proof and molded by family legacy, affirms the beauty of persistence. “I always wanted to be Beyoncé before Beyoncé,” she laughs, before revealing how redefining success keeps her creating across genres, from rock and roll to house music with Inner City. As she puts it, “Rock and roll is just the blues sped up,” and Steffanie Christi'an's story is a soundtrack of resilience, reinvention, and unapologetic Black womanhood in music. Well-written stories are driven by the choices characters make, and understanding why the characters made those choices is crucial if you want them to seem believable and authentic. That's where psychology can come in. In this week's episode of Fully Booked, journalist and High Fantasy author Steffanie Costigan joins Craig and Roland to discuss how she uses elements from the classic Myers-Briggs Type Indicator when she develops her characters, because she believes it offers a powerful guide into how each of them might think, act, and interact with each other.  Inspired by the work of Carl Jung, this personality index ranks traits like extraversion, empathy, intuition, and perception and then assigns one of 16 personality types to the result - mapping out characteristics that particular type of person is best known for. Steffanie explores how assigning these personality types has helped her gain a deeper understanding of her characters, and made them more compelling and engaging for the readers of her work.   Steffanie Costigan https://landofthedragon.ca/about/ Hidden Gems Need our help publishing or marketing your book?  https://www.hiddengemsbooks.com/author-services/ All episode details and links:  https://www.hiddengemsbooks.com/podcast

I had a funny conversation with a single dad. We were talking about how to keep things clean and how to get our kids to clean. I noticed he wasn't an efficient housekeeper. He felt he was doing ok, and it was ok, just not very clean. : ) This comes from someone who was a professional housekeeper for almost two decades. This dad told me they have a long-time family friend named Steffanie. She is a natural-born cleaner, like me. When he asked the kids to clean anything they would respond, “Dad's clean, or Stefanie's clean.” Gotta love kids! My goal today is not to discuss different systems for getting kids to do chores or how to get kids to do chores. It's about keeping home management and teaching in place while reinforcing good relationships at the same time. I'm sharing two things I did that worked for a time and helped build relationships. One is truly radical. It will leave some of you speechless and others of you laughing. I'm sharing them because they illustrate the importance of relationships over home management. Join me and see how you can care for home and family and still build relationships.

Steffanie is Canadian-born and named by Time Magazine as one of the 50 most influential people in healthcare.  She has written a book titled The Perfect Predator.  A Scientists race to save her Husband from a Deadly Superbug. Steffanie's story unfolds like a gripping thriller. On holiday in Egypt, with her husband Tom, a deadly Superbug hijacks his body and it has Superpowers. It steals genes from other bacteria and the environment to resist antibiotics.  This Superbug isn't an anamoloy. 5 million people will die from these types of infections in 2024. By 2050, that number is predicted to be 10 million. Why? The misuse and overuse of antibiotics in medicine and animal husbandry. Tom is airlifted to Germany, where the doctors aren't only perplexed, they are terrified as in the past this Superbog has shut down entire hospitals. They can do nothing, so Tom is Medevaced to the US.  Fighting for his life, his organs shutting down, Tom is running out of time. Steffanie is desperate.  She sees a psyche, hears about a century-old forgotten cure developed by a French Canadian but must enlist a dream team to try to save his life. What they uncover might save millions of lives, including yours and mine. To buy Steffanie and Tom's Book: The Perfect Predator. This week Pastor Steve and Steffanie Haney kicked off our JOY series. They talked about the difference between happiness and joy. Happiness is a feeling dependent on external circumstances and whether or not our expectations are being met. Joy is being present to Jesus. Therefore since Jesus is the essence of the Gospel or good news then wherever the Gospel goes you can find joy. Steve and Steffanie challenged us to reach out during the Holidays and in doing so we would find Joy. “He who refreshes others will themselves be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25 —— Christ Center exists to reach people for Christ and make disciples. Epidemiologist Steffanie Strathdee and her husband, psychologist Tom Patterson, were vacationing in Egypt when Tom came down with a stomach bug. What at first seemed like a case of food poisoning quickly turned critical, and by the time Tom had been transferred via emergency medevac to the world-class medical center at UC San Diego, where both he and Steffanie worked, blood work revealed why modern medicine was failing: Tom was fighting one of the most dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the world.Steffanie joins Greg this episode to discuss solving her husband's medical crisis, and what she learned from this horrific experience. They also discuss how Covid has ramped these trends up, how critical phages are for our bodies, and the open mindedness of PhDs vs MDs.Steffanie is Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences and Harold Simon Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins and Simon Fraser Universities. She co-directs UCSD's new center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH), Global Health Institute and the International Core of UCSD's Center for AIDS Research. Stefanie has co-authored her memoir all about her husbands illness titled, “The Perfect Predator: A Scientist's Race to Save Her Husband from a Deadly Superbug.”Episode Quotes:The need for a phage library[30:40] What we need to do is build a phage library that maps onto a superbug library. And, of course, these are going to be constantly needing to be updated because these are organisms that are co-evolving to attack one another. What's the future looking for the advancement of phage[37:55] I can imagine a situation in the future, though, where, because we have, sequencers that are portable and cheaper than ever before, that you'd be able to sequence a phage and sequence a bacteria and be able to have a database to say, okay, you know, this phage will match that bacterium or to even genetically modify or synthesize a phage. So in a 3D printing model, some of my colleagues in Belgium have, you know, been working on that. So, I think that there's going to be advances that are going to help us make this work. But right now, we need phage libraries. We need more investment in clinical trials.Pushing beyond boundaries leads to discovery[39:49] When your back is up against the wall, whether it's you as an individual, us as a society, or a planet, we can sometimes have creative ideas to come up with solutions that we wouldn't otherwise do. And that's what I'm hoping that we'll do now because both climate change and antimicrobial resistance are colliding.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at UC San DiegoFaculty Profile at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public HealthProfessional Profile at Canadian Association for Global HealthSteffanie Strathdee on LinkedInSteffanie Strathdee on TwitterSteffanie Strathdee on InstagramSteffanie Strathdee on TEDxNashvilleHer Work:Steffanie Strathdee on Google ScholarThe Perfect Predator Website

A bracing medical thriller about one woman's race to save her husband from a lethal, antibiotic-resistant superbug. Epidemiologist Steffanie Strathdee and her husband, psychologist Tom Patterson, were vacationing in Egypt when Tom came down with a stomach bug. Steffanie dosed Tom with an antibiotic and expected the discomfort to pass. Instead, his condition turned critical. Local doctors at an Egyptian clinic, an emergency medevac team and then a German hospital failed to cure him. By the time Tom reached the world-class medical center at UC San Diego, where both he and Steffanie worked, bloodwork revealed why modern medicine was failing: Tom was fighting one of the most dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the world. Frantic, Steffanie combed through research old and new and came across phage theory: the idea that the right virus, aka “the perfect predator,” can kill even the most lethal bacteria. Phage treatment had fallen out of favor almost 100 years ago, after antibiotic use went mainstream. Now, with time running out, Steffanie appealed to phage researchers all over the world for help. . . and together they achieved a major medical breakthrough. The Perfect Predator is a nail-biting account of how Steffanie resurrected a forgotten cure—allying with the FDA, researchers from Texas A&M, and a clandestine Navy biomedical center—to design a treatment and save her husband before it was too late. The Perfect Predator is a story of love and against-all-odds survival, detailing how Steffanie helped uncover the science behind a powerful new weapon in the global superbug crisis.

That was definitely the theme in the very first interviews Citizens Climate Radio's host, Peterson Toscano, conducted with Marshall Saunders, founder of CCL, and Mark Reynolds, the organization's first executive director.  Peterson decided to revisit these interviews, remaster them, and share them with you. Marshall and Mark's personal stories of transformation are inspiring and at times hilarious, especially when they talk about the first tentative and even ridiculous steps they took to start the organization. Their belief in the power of everyday people doing extraordinary things will move you. In fact, you may want to have some tissues nearby as you listen to Marshall and Mark share their stories, and the story of Citizens Climate Lobby's beginnings.  Madeleine Para, CCL's current executive director was also featured in that first episode. These are the  values that draw more and more college, high school, and middle school aged volunteers into the organization.  The Art House Jodi Heights is a singer/songwriter. In the sea of singer-songwriters, Jodi stands out.  Not only does she have a classically honed technique that captures a Broadway style in her voice, and contemporary rock in her piano playing, she also writes brilliant lyrics that dive deep into everyday life. Her songs can be playful and heartbreaking. Recently she was moved to write a song about our world, which is being rocked by the impacts of climate change. This is part two of my mini-series on personalization. So to recap, I feel very strongly that personalization is the new Megatrend in Talent Acquisition. Offering personalized recruitment marketing, candidate journies, assessments, feedback, onboarding, and communication will be critical objectives for employers over the next few years. Candidates are demanding it, the technology is here to facilitate it, and the amount of friction that will get removed from recruiting processes will be a win for candidates, recruiters and hiring managers. So what is possible, and how are employers dealing with the practicalities of personalization in talent acquisition? A few weeks ago, the awesome team at Paradox invited me to speak and record some interviews at their client board event in Scottsdale, Arizona. Paradox is a technology that is really driving the progress of personalization. It was very insightful to talk to some of their clients about the need for personalization in their TA processes and the change journies they are taking their recruiters and hiring managers on to make personalization happen. In this second set of interviews from the event (check out Episode 435 if you want to hear the others), you'll hear from Derek Braun, Staffing and Recruiting Manager at GoWireless and Steffanie Chaviano, VP of Talent and Patient Access at Autism Learning Partners. Derek and Steffanie talk us through their experiences of using conversational AI to transform the effectiveness of their recruiting strategies. First up, though, is Adam Godson, Chief Product Officer at Paradox, talking about some of the psychology behind conversational interfaces. These are some of the topics you'll find discussed in this episode: Personalisation at scale The psychological elements of conversation design Using conversation to drive processes Connect with people, not software How technology is affecting recruiter career choices Handling high volumes of applicant flow is an engaging way.
