In this episode, we hear from Yoann Barelli. For those that aren't familiar, Yoann hails from Nice in the south of France and has been racing Mountain Bikes since the tender age of 7 years old. From there he went on to have numerous successes, including becoming the French Elite DH champion in 2004, and multiple podium finishes in the Enduro World Series after that. Over the past few years, we have seen Yoann pivot towards free riding, getting creative, and of course, having loads of fun! He shares this incredible passion and energy through his coaching Business, Into The Gnar, which he launched back in 2020 and has completely blown up from there! Yoann also curates a yearly free ride extravaganza in the Sea To Sky which sees some of the world's best Pro Riders and up and up-and-coming athletes test their limits on some of the most technical and high-consequence features in the area.In this inspiring conversation, we cover:New sponsors and new bikesHis mental process from start to finishHow to use humour to help boost your mental game. How to use breathwork in your ridingHow he assesses riskWhat he has learned since becoming a mtb coachHis specific Visualization strategyAnd so, so, much more. We rode the Double Black Green Monster trail in Whistler prior to recording this chat and it was epic to see his processes and decision-making in action - I highly recommend watching that video over on my YouTube channel @jakejohnstone. It's not about the bike this week. From time to time, I branch out to have a conversation with someone who inspires me.Kirby Brown is an old friend who I met in Whistler B.C. back in the 90's. At the time we were both working for Whistler Mountain, now Whistler Blackcomb. Kirby worked in guest services, while I worked at McKonkey's Sports Shop across the hall as a rental “technician”. We've always kept in touch.Kirby would constantly challenge himself in roles he felt he was under qualified for but would allow him to make change in impactful ways. Along the way he discovered his passion for community building, which became his primary focus and he has found great personal meaning working at making the world a better place. In 2015, Kirby became the GM of the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish BC. His goal was to create an experience for guests to showcase the beauty of the region, and the community responded with their full support. But that support wasn't universally felt. Some disagreed with the project, and worked to undermine this vision. On Aug. 10, 2019, someone climbed up one of the towers and cut the haul rope, bringing the entire dream down. This not only devastated the business but also affected the community deeply. Kirby stepped up to not only help breath life back into the project, but also to focus on taking care of all the employees and families that were affected. Then, just months after the gondola's resurrection, it was cut down a second time. Kirby is also on the board for Playground Builders, a wonderful organization that he joined in 2007.“We build playgrounds for children in war-torn areas. In Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine, there are no safe places for children to play. Most kids have never experienced the joy of a swing or the thrill of a slide. We are dedicated to building hope and peace through the gift of play.”In this episode we cover a lot of ground. We talk about Playground Builders as well as the tragic story of the Sea to Sky Gondola. We chat about the importance and meaning behind altruism and how helping others can bring more joy to our own lives. Kirby is a good dude and someone that I look up to as a mentor and I'm grateful for our friendship. This is a throwback (it sounds strange saying that) to the very early lockdown days here in South Africa where Doug  caught up with one of the most focused and talent young athletes he has met to date."From the moment I met Wade Young I knew that he would rise to become an icon on the Hard Enduro world not just in South Africa but on a global level too. He was extremely focused, approached his training and nutrition seriously and had that "killer" instinct when it came to being competitive."For this EP of SOMETHING FRESH, we talk about Wade's journey and how he has developed his recipe to WIN! Enjoy!Check out his bio below courtesy of Red Bull Media House:"This KwaZulu-Natal phenom first burst onto the scene in November 2012 when he became the youngest ever winner or the Roof of Africa in Lesotho. Some would say that winning one of toughest hard Enduro races on the planet so early on in your career is a fluke. But the manner in which he did it, beating second place by a full eleven minutes and finishing ahead of former winners such as 2011 victor Graham Jarvis (third) and three-time winner Chris Birch, speaks of a rider of class way beyond his years. In 2013, (then aged 17) he won the South African Championship in the Senior Off-Road class and took the title in the under-21 class. He also put in credible finishes at Harescramble and Romaniacs and was runner-up in the iconic King of The Hill event. Then in 2014 he took the big step up from heir apparent to main contender in the world of Hard Enduro. Not only did he win his second Roof of Africa title, but he also claimed both Ukupachu and King of the Hill Hard Enduro's and stood on the podium at Red Bull Romainiacs and Sea to Sky.On South African soil he successfully defended his overall South African Enduro championship title.2015 saw him once again focused on the World Hard Enduro circuit with a fourth place at Romaniacs (he was on course for a much higher finish until he drowned his bike on the final stage) a third place at Sea to Sky and a second at The Roof of Africa. In 2016 he signed with Factory Sherco and started the year with a big win at Hell's Gate. A crash at Sea To Sky (where he won the Forest Stage) saw him break a bone in his hand and put an unfortunate end to his season. He bounced back in 2017 however, and so far has won the German Wiesel-X extreme enduro, King of the Hill Hard Enduro in Romania and the XL Lagares. He followed this up with an epic 2018 winning three of the major global hard enduro events this year, taking out Red Bull Romaniacs, Red Bull Megawatt 111 in Poland and Sea to Sky in Turkey, among a string of other podium results. He then capped the year off by successfully defending his Roof of Africa title.2019 saw him start strong with a runner up finish at the Extreme XL Lagares in Portugal. Unfortunately he spent some time on the sidelines during the middle of the season after having to withdraw from Red Bull Romaniacs due to a crash. He came back strong during the latter part however, winning the American Hard Enduro Series (AHES) series as well as stringing together a host of big results around the globe, including second place at Sea to Sky, winning the Uncle Hard Enduro in South Borneo, Indonesia in late November and claiming the one-day Wildwood Rock Extreme earlier the same month. He also chalked up yet another Roof of Africa title - his fifth (and his third in a row). With that victory, Young cemented second place in the all-time Roof of Africa hall of fame ahead of Graham Jarvis (four victories) but getting closer to the legendary Alfie Cox, who has nine.."

Sea to Sky Removal is on a mission to change the construction industry’s waste disposal practices, and educate workers in the process. As part of their service, they provide recycling tutorials to crews who are used to tossing everything – plastic, wood, cardboard, carpet, stone – in a single trash bin. They also provide photo documentation and diversion percentage reports for Built Green and LEED projects, so contractors know exactly what materials were diverted from the landfill.Chris, Cinci, and I talk about how they got started in the industry, using service to differentiate their company from the competition and why Sea to Sky is a B Corp.Sea to Sky Removal website: https://www.seatoskyremoval.ca/Sea to Sky Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seatoskyremoval/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0czmX0jwkbkCDmJOTR5VnAMy Website: https://betterconstructionmedia.com/

The collapse of the popular Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish on Saturday has dashed dozens of wedding plans for the rest of the season. The Squamish RCMP is treating the collapse as a criminal investigation and said Saturday that the gondola's cable appears to have been cut. No timeline has been given for when the gondola may be repaired and reopened, which has planners scrambling to find alternative venues. The collapse was reported around 4:30am on Saturday morning. No one was injured. The company that operates the attraction says a haul rope (five-centimetre cable) snapped, and most of the gondola's 30 cabins fell to the ground. Six cabins were in the gondola's upper and lower stations and were unaffected. The lift manufacturer, Dopplemayr, has sent a team to the site to inspect the gondola along with an international rope maintenance company. Capital North is a hard rock dynamic duo from Pasadena, CA, consisting of Jonathan Farrar (Guitar/Vocals) and Anthony Zichella (Vocals). Formed in the summer of 2016 after the disbanding of their former pop-punk/post-hardcore band, Lights In The Sky, the two came together to form a band that would best showcase who they are as musicians and thus, Capital North was born. After the split of LITS, Farrar packed his bag and traveled the world for a year on a mission of soul searching while Zichella graduated from culinary school and moved to Portland to pursue his passion as a chef, but both found their way back to one thing; music. Before long, the two began planning the direction of what would be Capital North from separate continents. While traveling in Iceland, Farrar visited a unique and beautiful town called Akureyri, better known as the 'Capital of the North.' Leaving a lasting impression on him, he realized it accurately described the duo's current state of emotions as they strive to get back to what is important with "capital" being an integral place or feeling while "north" describes the direction in which to get there. Farrar shares, "Essentially, this name means getting back to what is important. That is what we have experienced time and time again - always straying, but always returning to music because it is such a vital aspect of our existence and being."As a band, Capital North has created a sound that is a drastic change from their former project and focuses on connecting with listeners through relatable lyrical themes and honest melodies. Recorded at The Pie Studios in Pasadena, the band's debut EP, Sea To Sky, was engineered by Nels Jensen (Sigur Rós, Jamie Foxx) with tracking by Devyn June, and mixed/mastered by Bertrand and Eric Poncet (of Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!) at Alias Studio. The six-track EP is set to be released on March 2nd, 2018 and discusses real life experiences including struggles with health, relationships, life, and death. With the release of Sea To Sky, Capital North looks excitedly toward the future and the potential of making a monumental impact in the music scene and beyond.
